1 THE LOG SHEET MEMBER GYA. USSA. MYCA Official Publication of The Gulfport Yacht Club October 2010 General Membership Meeting October 19, p.m. At this year s General Membership Meeting, we will vote on whether to revise the junior resident membership category of our bylaws. Currently, less than 5% of our membership is under the age of 35. It has come to the board s attention that the initiation fee and the annual dues are cost prohibitive for most junior members at this time. In an effort to grow the Club, the board is proposing that junior resident members under 35 would pay 10% of the initiation fee when they join, with the balance paid in full by the time they are 35. Their yearly dues, along with any assessments, would be 50% of resident member dues. They would not be able to vote or hold office until they became a resident member by paying the balance of their initiation fee and by beginning payment of full annual dues. Members will also vote on the new slate of officers and board members for Our new general manager, Steve Chatelain will be introduced, with a Welcome Reception for Steve immediately following the General Membership Meeting. 6 COMMODORE S REPORT We ve got a busy October at the Club! Here s a few things going on: I am pleased to announce that our new Manager, Steve Chatelain, will start on Monday, October 11. Steve, his wife Amy and their children come to us from Lafayette, Louisiana. Steve has extensive club management experience and will be a great asset to the Club. We will have a Welcome Reception for Steve immediately following the General Membership Meeting on October 19, so please mark your calendars and plan to be there! Also, I want to thank Vice Commodore Teal Salloum and his search committee, who worked diligently in bringing Steve to the club. I also want to take this opportunity to thank Manager Bill Parker for his dedicated service to the Club. Bill came to us during the challenging time of rebuilding the Club and worked tirelessly on getting the new Club off the ground. We will recognize Bill for his service on Wednesday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Chart Room. Please make plans to attend. As you know, the General Membership meeting will be held on October 19. Along with elections and other Club business, a By Law revision is being proposed. This proposal to revise the existing Junior Resident Member category would allow members in this category to pay reduced initiation fees, assessments and dues. Less than 5% of our Club membership is under the age of thirty five (35), and this is an effort to encourage growth of the Club through this membership category. The Governing Board unanimously recommended this proposal to the membership, so plan to attend the meeting and make your opinion known. After a wildly successful Luau, the next big Club party coming up will be the Halloween Happy Hour on Friday, October 29. You know Entertainment Chair Victoria Chambers will be planning something creepy! Also, don t forget about the High School Sailing Spaghetti Dinner on October 7, and the Madisonville Wooden Boat Festival the weekend of October 23. See you at the Club, Marty Warren, Commodore Gulfport Yacht Club Sailing Foundation We are still working on raising the remaining money to start the foundation. Please help support the Foundation and High School Sailing Teams by attending the SAILING NEWS Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction on October 7th starting at 5:30 pm. Part of the proceeds from the dinner and auction will cover most of the start up costs but we still need about $1,500 to get the ball rolling. Please contact me if you would be interested in making a donation. More information is located on the Foundation Page of the website. Storage/Dock Box We are need of some more storage space for the gear that is used daily. If you have a old dock box or large storage bin please let me know. Mississippi High School Sailing Championships The first High Sailing Regatta for GYC will be held November 6 7. Teams attending will be St. Patrick, Gulfport, Long Beach, Biloxi, St. Stanislaus, & Brother Martin. Our St. Patrick and Gulfport High School teams have been practicing and we are looking forward to seeing them in action. Sam Vasquez, Sailing Director

7 LADIES AUXILIARY Ladies Auxiliary enjoyed an afternoon of wine tasting given by Michael Mensi from L & M Package Store, Fine Wines & Liquor on Pass Road in Gulfport. Members sampled different Sauvignon Blanc wines among which were Bogle Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc, Chateau St. Jean Fume Blanc and Chateau de Sancerre. As members sampled each wine, Mr. Mensi answered questions and gave a very informative explanation as to why each wine had its own distinct flavor. The latest styles for fall and winter from Gatlin s will be featured at our October meeting on the 27th. Don t miss it! Hostesses for October are Teenie Barnett, Elaine Whittenberg, Ann Mathers, and Paula Beasley. 8 POWERBOAT COMMITTEE ARRRRRRGGGE The Pirates of the Tchefuncte are on the move looking ahead to the arrival of the fleet of wooden boats that will be participating in the 2010 Madisonville Wooden Boat Festival on October It was a summer of distractions like the oil spill and the recent hurricanes (fortunately in the Atlantic) but for these and other reasons the 2010 boating season was less than what everyone would have liked. But..a famous philosopher (Yogi Berra) once said it ain t over till its over and the season ain t over yet. The GYC Madisonville Wooden Boat Show Rendezvous is just around the corner. The Rendezvous activities will begin as the GYC Fleet of Classic Wooden Boats casts off on Thursday morning October 21 at first light. Given fair winds and good weather the fleet will travel the approximately 78 mile course to Madisonville on the Tchefuncte River arriving around 4 PM. After all vessels are docked and settled in the GYC Powerboat Committee will sponsor a party complete with good food and good music for good friends. Commodore Michael Hage and the crew of the Rufnek II Madisonville 2010 will bring the food, Commodore Johnny Atherton will handle the music and all boats are requested to bring a desert to compliment the meal. All GYC members are invited to attend!! There are rooms available nearby in Mandeville and Covington so please come and join in the fun and stay over for a while. If the night gets to long and you have too much fun I can imagine there might be a vacant bunk on one of the boats that would accommodate you for the night. There will be a special Madisonville Rendezvous Tee Shirts available for order next week. Please take a look at the graphic and information on the back page of the Log Sheet and contact the office if you are interested in ordering. They will be printed and available before the boats cast off. The Wooden Boat festival will sponsor a Captain s party on Friday night that is one to rival any party from any occasion. It is located at the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum with many local restaurants providing anything you might care to eat, the spirits will flow freely, and there will be at least two and maybe three bands entertaining for the evening. It is at this event that the Pirates of Tchefuncte venture out to prowl around and look for lonely seamen to impress for their next plundering raid on the high seas. If you come, please be wary of these outlaws of the sea. If you would like to attend this party the tickets are $50 and can be purchased at City Hall on Friday. Just mention that you are with the Gulfport Yacht Club group. Gulfport Yacht Club has a great fleet of wooden boats as good as any boating organization around. Wooden boat owners are of a different sort and love to share the history and enjoyment of their vessels with anyone who would care to participate. It has been said that Wooden Boats have their own soul. Wooden boats become a part of the family to which they are entrusted. At present we have commitments from 7 beautiful wooden vessels to represent GYC in the show. Wayne Tisdale Powerboat Committee
