1 Sailing Trust Report for 2012
2 Since 2007 Sea-Change has provided action-centred learning and seamanship training for young people and vulnerable adults. It is a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Teaching Establishment, RYA Sailability Foundation Organisation and an Associate Member of the Association of Sail Training Organisations.
3 Another Busy Year There was a great deal going on in Sea-Change Supporter TS Rigging of Maldon rerigged the Cutty Sark in time for the Olympics and the Thames saw a fleet of sailtraining vessels and barges attend the Diamond Jubilee Pageant. A crew from Mark Hall School in Harlow sailed to Greenwich to see the Queen reopen Cutty Sark and were among the first to view the vessel after the Queen and VIPs but before the general public. The spars of the clipper were manned by volunteers wearing jackets bearing the logos of Sea-Change and Heritage Marine with the slogan working together for maritime heritage. Mark Hall School at the Cutty Sark The weather for the voyage from Maldon to Greenwich had been horrid and did not look good for the day itself but as Her Majesty alighted from her car the rain ceased and the clouds cleared, at least until she departed. It was a wonderful experience. The crew were pleased to see the rig all works as it should and could imagine tacking and wearing ship next time! As part of our work with the Cambria Trust, Sea-Change provided the crew to take Cambria to the Diamond Jubilee Pageant. We were sailing in company with some of the many boats heading for the Pool to take part in the Parade of Sail (or, more accurately, boats with masts). We sailed up to Gallions Reach and met our tug the Steven B for the Woolwich Barrier and Tower Bridge. On the way up we passed many fine ships, including stars such as Belem from France. Also in attendance was Mariquita under the command of Jim Thom, a trustee of Sea-Change. Her crew gave three cheers. Just before the Olympics began, we returned Cambria to her berth at Gravesend as a large fleet was gathering for the event. The reach was full of two large and mainly Dutch fleets, one of private yachts and the other a significant group of tall ships offering river trips to people during time off from watching the Olympics. We had seen much of this latter fleet when it had visited Ipswich on a goodwill visit in April during our first Youth Sailing Scheme voyage. The Topper Cambria to the Pageant Young Carer on Old Father Thames
4 Anchored at dusk sheltering from a chilly easterly at Trimley we first noticed square sails coming past the cranes at Felixstowe. Then as the evening went on there were more and more. Many of them were conversions but many were the real thing, either authentic replicas or original trading hulls. A total of twenty two passed, an inspiration for UK sail training. This year has emphasised that we are part of an international scene was another busy year in terms of charters. Reminder carried twelve accompanied youth or disability groups and two Youth Sailing Scheme crews all from Maldon. Also, Cambria enabled us to offer two extended programmes amounting to seven weeks for crews of young people working directly with Sea-Change. They came from the accompanied groups or were referred to us. In addition, we provided crews for four groups of young carers and two other charters on Cambria and did four fundraising charters for adults. In total Sea- Change worked afloat for 139 days and worked with 238 people. Accompanied charters Maldon s square rigger Lady of Avenel Established customers returned and it was great to see them and welcome new and inspiring groups. In 2011 the Woolverstone Project had a day trip and this year returned for a full week, with the aid of a grant from RYA Sailability. A film capturing how well the disabled crew engaged with the vessel should soon appear on Sailability TV. The grant among others also helped with a pilot programme for people living with dementia. Organised by Dementia Adventure, a social enterprise using time with nature to improve lives, this was a major success. A group from Clacton Coastal Academy visited the coast they knew quite well from ashore in a new and exciting way, and worked like Trojans. Dementia Adventure Woolverstone Sailability
5 Clacton Coastal Academy Two fundraising adult charters were barge matches with the Cambria, achieving first place overall in the Thames Match in near calm conditions with a group from the Port of London Authority and second place in the Colne Race with the London Corinthian Sailing Club. Youth Sailing Scheme Delivery was the name of the game with YSS on Cambria. In July it was token consignments of Captain Bob Bitter for the Mighty Oak Brewery of Maldon to four waterside pubs with a suitable quantity of learning materials for the crew from Drinkaware. She also returned to Pin Mill for a scrub before the Thames Match. In August Cambria recreated her last cargo voyage of October 1970, from Tilbury Dock to Ipswich. Dick Durham, mate in 1969 and 1970 joined the crew and we are very grateful to harbourmasters Richard Exley and Geoff Holland at Tilbury and Jerry Coleman at Ipswich. Thanks also to towage by Jim Dines, Andrew Bain, Andy Harman and Nigel Cardy, and to Simon North who made an excellent film you can view at Altogether fifteen trainees sailed aboard over periods ranging from a week to two months. The cargoes provided an objective for the crews and took them into the realm of commercial activity, which was educational. 6 6 trainees welcomed aboard a reception organised by the Ipswich Maritime Trust comprising many people who remembered her in trade including both daughters of famous previous skipper/owner Bob Roberts. Cambria in Tilbury Dock - Dick Durham and trainee Dean Conway Ipswich Wolsey Rotary collect their donated cement Thanks: Early in 2012 Sea-Change opened an office in an industrial unit at Blackwater Marina at Mayland thanks particularly to funding from TK Foundation. We are very grateful to many other individual and institutional supporters, too many to mention in full but including the Worshipful Company of Weavers, the Essex Youth Trust and Positive Activities for Young People, the Iliffe Family Trust, Worshipful Companies of Saddlers, Girdlers, Armourers and Brasiers and Master Mariners, the Mirianog, Augustine Courtauld, Oak, Greensward Charitable and Royal Thames Yacht Club Charitable Trusts, AIM and Essex Community Foundations, Martin McColl, Livett s Launches and the Port of London Authority. The High Sherriff s Fund funded the purchase of a Topper sailing dinghy which we carry on the barge for YSS. Yacht Carbon Offset again provided a carbon offset certificate. Sea-Change remained the chosen charity for Livett s Launches. In 2013 we will be the charity of the year for British Standard Cupboards. Please support our supporters.
7 The Appeal gathers momentum with new support from the Wates Foundation and the Garfield Weston Trust. It now stands at 275,000, almost the half-way point and we need a big push this winter. We are delighted to welcome Professor Michael Mainelli and Dick Durham as appeal patrons replacing General Sir Michael Hobbs who has retired with our grateful thanks. Admin Officer Don Ramsay Plans for 2013: In 2013 we will welcome back accompanied groups on Reminder and will be using Cambria again for two extended programmes. It was good to see people moving from one to the other last season and we encourage others to do this in future. Cambria will recreate more of her historic cargo passages. We will also participate in three or four barge matches including the 150 th anniversary of the Thames Match and the Passage Match from Gravesend to Harwich. Please let us know if you would like to join us. A few charters for adults are important as a way of raising funds to support the Trust s charitable work. Work will commence to develop a structured traditional seamanship programme enabling young people to progress towards employment with barges. There is a shortage of crews for the historic fleet so that this will not only help trainees but also enable barges to sail into the future. An essential element of this will be scholarships to meet the costs for trainees.
