Commodore s Letter July flowed into August with fair winds and good weather. Unfortunately, within weeks, the dog days of summer also arrived. In the height of our regatta season, the temperatures soared and the humidity climbed even higher. Early August brought the Summer in the Pass Regatta and the GYA J22 Championships. Weather conditions were good for all sailors and allowed for some great sailing. The number of PHRF boats participating in the Summer in the Pass Regatta hit an all-time high for the past 15 years. PHRF race boats hailed from Gulfport, Long Beach, New Orleans and the Pass totaling 14 boats on the water. It looked like the 1970s with all the spinnakers flying. As for the J22 fleet, they enjoyed fair winds and two weekends of 1st class racing and hospitality, having been in the Pass for the Birthday Regatta the week before. The thank you notes are still arriving. The next successful event was the Knost Regatta, the longest running all female regatta in North America. This year we added a twist by introducing an opti class for our youngest female skippers. Now we have continuity with racing classes for every age group in the Knost Regatta. From the young sailors to the seasoned racers, there is a place for all female athletes at this regatta. And, did I mention that the PCYC ladies won? In a highly competitive regatta over two days, the PCYC ladies beat out the best in the GYA and brought the Knost Banner back to its birthplace in the Pass. This was quite an accomplishment and we are very proud of our ladies! Pete Furze and his race committee were complimented both on and off the water for conducting a great event! And Clark and our staff were raved about. There was nothing but praise for our club and the great regattas we host. Our sailing camp banquet was a time to reflect and enjoy the burgeoning enthusiasm these kids have for the sport of sailing. Young campers who had never been on a sailboat were telling stories like old salts. Everyone enjoyed the last event (continued on the next page)

September PCYC Newsletter 3 before school opening. Our sailing director, Zeke Fairbank, did a wonderful job by including all the campers regardless of experience or ability. The buzz around the room at the banquet was that the campers can t wait to get back on the water next summer. A special award went to Clare Taylor. Many of you know Clare or have know her since she was a young girl growing up in the Pass. Clare is leaving the sailing camp program to experience life outside of PCYC after 20 years either attending the camp or working as a counselor. We wish her the best and want her to know she will be missed. The Mississippi Coast Yachting Association Race Week was held in conjunction with our club s Lipton Challenge warm ups, the weekend before the actual regatta. While many clubs stayed home to fine tune their rigs for the Labor Day Challenge, the sailors who got out on the water gained valuable local knowledge that helped them in the regatta. Labor Day Weekend is synonymous with the Lipton Cup Challenge in the southern sailing world. Each GYA club can send a team of their best sailors to compete in three days of racing in pursuit of the coveted Lipton Cup. Results for the regatta are posted on our website and Facebook page. On a special note, the national magazine All At Sea will be doing a follow up article on both the Knost and the Liptons in the coming months. They recently published an article on the 1st female Lipton Skipper, Fairfax Moody and the formation of the Knost. The article can be read at: Bingo and CYO were big hits and the club has been full for all of these events. As Labor Day passes and summer comes to an end, remember we have a full calendar of Fall events planned for our members. The next theme dinner will be September 27th with Bon Operatit. Dinner and music will feature American Standards with food from some of America s top ports. Join us for a great evening! 4 4 PCYC Newsletter September PCYC Sailing News PCYC Wins 2nd Place at 2014 Liptons Well this year s Lipton Challenge was hosted by PCYC over Labor Day weekend. It was a tremendous event, with a large turnout from our members and from the participating clubs. Our team was on point with a second place finish overall. Congratulations to the Lipton Team. Race 1 was skippered by Danny Killeen, with crew Boyd Housey and Julie Charbonnet. They finished in 5th place in race # 1. Race 2 was skippered by Kevin Northrop, with crew Leslie Dane and Helen Charbonnet. They finished in 2nd place in race # 2. Race 3 was skippered by John Dane III, with crew Schaeffer Dane. They finished 3rd in race # 3. Race 4 was skippered by John F Dane, with crew Schaeffer Dane and Michael Burns. They finished 2nd in race # 4 In total, team PCYC finished the Liptons with 12 points and a second place overall. Bay Waveland Yacht Club repeated a first place position and will host the Lipton Challenge next year.

September PCYC Newsletter 5 OPTI News This past month has been very busy for some of our Junior sailors with a total of four regattas to report. It is so nice to see more young people out on the water... First up, USODA National California Yacht Club July Nationals is unique to other USODA events because the sailors compete the first two days for a spot on either the Gold or Silver Fleets and are then divided up accordingly the last two days. Also, it is the only event where the Top 50% overall qualify for Team Trials, which will be held at Coral Reef Yacht Club in May Large swells and shifty, light wind in the Pacific Ocean was in Michael Burns' favor as he finished in the top third to qualify for Gold Fleet. The next two days he continued to prevail, even leading one race the majority of the time. After a total of eleven races, Michael finished 32 out of 232 and 10th overall in his age group bringing home some hardware...congratulations Michael! The next event was U.S. Sunfish Class Association Youth North American Bay Waveland Yacht Club July PCYC had four of the eighteen sailors competing in this event against contenders as far away as Ecuador, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. With a total of seven races and two days of sailing, PCYC's Boyd Housey was the Top American Junior Sunfish Sailor! Jonathan Schrantz finished 10th, Thomas Weber - 12th, and Christy Charbonnet in 17th place. Great job everyone! USODA New England Championship was held August Sail Newport in Newport, RI. This event was the second largest USODA event in history with 417 competitors! There were four flights of ninety-five sailors in the advanced fleet and a total of thirty-seven sailors in green fleet. This was a huge challenge daily for race committee as the sea breeze did not make it up the Narrangansett Bay until at least 1pm each day. Only six races were completed over the course of three days, with race five being thrown out completely due to several major wind shift issues in the third flight and lack of wind in flight four causing 80 sailors to get a TLE (Time Limit Expired). Michael Burns was the only sailor from PCYC and he finished 46th out of 380! The most recent event was Galloway Gulfport Yacht Club on August PCYC sailors were on FIRE for this event! Boyd Housey earned top honors in the Laser Radial Division and Jonathan Schrantz in the Opti class...congratulations to both of these sailors! Thomas Weber finished 5th place in Laser Radial, Claire Housey knocked it out with a 2nd place overall in Optis and Sofia Diaz del Valle finished 3rd place in white fleet. PCYC is so proud of all of our young sailors!

September PCYC Newsletter 7 MORE SAILING NEWS VX One North American Championship was held July Newport Yacht Club. Nineteen competitors from around the country participated in the 2nd Annual VX One Championship completing a total of nine races over four days. Congratulations to John F. Dane...he crewed for Chris Alexander from Gulfport Yacht Club and they won the regatta! PCYC's Kevin Northrop also competed in this years event finishing 7th overall. Awesome job representing PCYC in this National event! Next years event will be GYC Oct. 3-7, John F. Dane also competed in the 2014 U.S. Sunfish Class Association North American Bay Waveland Yacht Club July 30 - Aug 2. Extremely light winds were the norm at this event making it difficult to get off very many races in the first three days of the regatta. However, day four brought nice winds and more races than the previous three combined. Overall, nine races were completed. John F. finished 33 out of 60 boats. Great job despite the light winds! Summer in the Pass Regatta Held August 2-3 at PCYC With great winds and terrific sailing conditions, nine PHRF Spinnaker boats and three nonspinnaker boats hit the waters on Saturday and Sunday. While Sunday s race was thrown out due to marks missing, the race scores were settled with Saturday s results. First Place: Skipper Julie Charbonnet on the USA 98 Second Place: Skipper Bryan Cromwell on the Knotfas Third Place: Skipper Wynne Taylor on the Wind s Choice Non-Spinnaker First was Roy Burke on Voyager WRAPPING UP THE KNOST REGATTA Another successful Knost Regatta was held the weekend of August The Ladies Auxiliary put on a great event for all who sailed AND those that stayed on shore. Again, the Pass Christian Yacht Club Ladies showed dominance by bringing the Knost Banner back to our club. Congratulations to the 2014 Knost Team. Skippers were Helen Charbonnet with a second place and fifth place win. Leslie Dane with two first places wins, Jennifer Schmidt with a third place win and Shelly McNair with a fourth place win.

8 PCYC Newsletter September FIRST MATE S REPORT A Message from the General Manager I know the old adage that the older you get, the quicker time flies. Well it seems like it may be true, as summer seemed to fly by! I hope all of you had a chance to make it to the club during the summer months and take advantage of everything that was happening. Sail campers and swim team members filled the club and club grounds with kids that by all accounts, had a fabulous time. We also had plenty of parties and events for the adults from the 4th of July, to regattas and much more. I would like to thank all the volunteers who helped us present fabulous events for all of our visitors to see. It gave the club a reputation for being the BEST place to host such events. And of course, I would like to thank my staff who worked tirelessly to make sure everything was a success. A welcome is extended to the Club s new members. Remember, we are always here to help you get acquainted with your club. In the coming fall months, several dinner events will be planned, including the return of Bon Operatit in September and of course our ever popular Oyster and Lobster Nights in October and November! Call on me or my staff for anything we can do to assist you at the club. Clark Brennan, General Manager NEW POOL HOURS The PCYC Swimming Pool is now closed for the Fall / Winter Season. 9 September PCYC Newsletter Mississippi Coast Realty 130 Davis Avenue Pass Christian, MS / office 866/ toll free 228/ fax Ken Austin, CRS, Broker Mimi Brown Millicent Charbonnet Kelly Duffy Emily McDougall Deb Wenger Sharon Sofford From the Desk of the Sailing Director In Long Island Sound, where I used to race, August always contained the dog days of summer. Strong currents, little if any wind, and high temperatures always made sailing more of a chore than a challenge and not much fun. Fortunately, September usually signified the return of a more reliable sea breeze and stronger wind, allowing one to quickly forget the previous month. On the Gulf Coast, we have been blessed with more reliable weather conditions and during August have seen many races conducted including Summer in the Pass, J-22 Championships, Knost and Lipton Regattas. Not only has the racing been great during August, but also during the next few months we will see several more great events including the Rafferty Series and the Round the Cat Race. We are in the planning stage for even more great events over the next three months including a Club Parent-Child Regatta and a Moonlight Overnight. Sailing lessons are taking off. Several members have taken advance of the flexible sailing lesson schedule and are developing skills and confidence on the water. Some are beginners, other just want a tune up before they venture out on their own. On Thursdays, I intend to begin instruction on a Colgate 26 and will provide coaching aboard that boat during Thursday night races for those who want to develop higher-level skills in racing strategy, starts, foredeck / spinnaker, and sail trim. This month s Sailing Seminar has been rescheduled For September 26, starting at 5:30pm. This month s topic is Key Rules of the Road and Racing Rules. This topic should be of great interest to new sailors, young and old, and experienced sailors who want to freshen up their rules knowledge. Hotdogs will be available at the bar, so come grab a drink and a dog, and prepare for an educational and entertaining evening discussion. Racing rules rubrics will be handed out during the seminar. With summer camp behind us, and kids back in school, youth sailing has died down a bit. There is a Junior Regatta on September 20th at Pensacola Yacht Club. Additionally, I am in discussion with Pass Christian Middle School and High Schools and Coast Episcopal with regards to starting a middle and high school sailing club / team to provide an avenue for young sailors to continue their development during the school year. Based on input from families living locally, this concept is being very well received. There will be more on this as the programs come together. I hop you enjoy the great weather and sailing conditions and get out soon on the water. Zeke

September PCYC Newsletter 11 PCYC Ladies Auxiliary Thanks to everyone who made our August luncheon another delightful event! It was great to have so many members of the auxiliary present; what a welcoming to our five new Ladies Auxiliary members; Charla Pryor, Clara Vella, Lita Andreano, Patti Lashley and Ann Chaney. True to its long tradition, the Knost Regatta of 2014 was a time to showcase the talents of our lady sailors. Congratulations to the Pass Christian Team on their First Place Win! Many thanks to those members of our Board who worked on the event, and to the volunteers from our membership who helped, and who came throughout the weekend offering time, skill and muscle. You know who you are; your hard work and dedication to the Club and the Ladies Auxiliary made this year s regatta a complete success. We were blessed to work with the best of the best...just to mention a few, Cathy Cornett; Club Manager Clark; Commodore Yeomans; Peter Furze and the PCYC Race Committee. There are interesting programs planned for upcoming luncheons. Our guest speaker for the September luncheon is our area s chief meteorologist; should be a timely message. At the October luncheon we will hear a presentation by Laurie Fisher, Faculty member of Pass Christian Elementary. In 2014, Laurie received statewide recognition for her work with students in their presentation of Cemetery Tours A History of Pass Christian. By the way, Laurie and her husband, Dr. Rodney Fisher (Fisher Ranch) are new members of PCYC! See you in September...and at all the luncheons for the remainder of the year! As always, thanks for your support. May God continue to bless us. Jane Parrish, President The ladies of PCYC were beautiful in their colorful frocks as we celebrated summer s end. Jane Parrish led us in a prayer of thanks for all our many blessings and remembered the passing of Jerry Pilcher, one of PCYC s past commodores who started our long standing tradition of cook your own. A special thanks goes out to the Knost committee, Jamie Bridger, Committee Chairman, who designed the Knost flags logo, which we will carry through like the "Blue Dog" and thanks to Donna Newton and Evelyn Gregory. Of course we were all happy with the Bushwackers. As you know the employee thank you lunch has been changed to September 7 and we still need side dishes. We want to show our appreciation for the hard work of the employees. Please bring your dishes to the club for 2 o'clock. Cheri Dillard talked about the Holiday Boutique which is only three months away November 14 and 15th Contact Kitzie, (504) about what you can cook, 4-6 servings for the holiday kitchen for sale to raise funds for the club. The 94th Sir Lipton regatta which has 33 yacht clubs participating will be over Labor Day weekend. Come eat, drink and enjoy. You don't have to be a sailor. Thanks to Bob Cutting and Shirley Clausing for taking Knost pictures. Gwenn Voigts announced that Mike Reader, WLOX weatherman, will be our September luncheon speaker so please come out and enjoy. Welcome to our new members FJ Cutting, Ann Chaney, Charla Pryor, Clara Vella, Patty Lashley and Lida Andreano.
