Coastal stations measurement in India at 50 m agl (FIRST STEPS TAKEN BY MNRE/ CWET) India is blessed a coast line of about 7600 kms. Under national wind monitoring programme winds have been measured at 54 locations in the coast line
Coastal line measurement done by MNRE/ CWET Rameshwaram has shown wind power density (measure of power available in the wind) as 603 W/m 2 at 50 m a.g.l. WPD at Kanyakumari is in the range of 370 W/m 2 at 30 m a.g.l. Coast line of Gujarat has reasonable potential but is prone to cyclonic conditions that can be very severe Western coast line has shown modest potential at sea level On-site measurements at 100mtr mast at Rameshwaram planned (obtained clearances)
OFFSHORE WIND RESOURCE ASSESSMENT IN INDIA to conduct a feasibility study for possible offshore wind turbines, 15 days wind profile study had been made during July 2009 by using SODAR (Sound Detection And Ranging) instrument at Dhanuskodi,Rameshwaram
(FIRST STEPS TAKEN BY MNRE/ CWET) Offshore mean simulated wind speed at 80 m a.g.l. The contour interval is 2 m/s
(FIRST STEPS TAKEN BY MNRE/ CWET) Offshore mean simulated WPD level at 80 m a.g.l. The contour interval is 100 W/m 2

Measurements by INCOIS Carried out preliminary studies Concluded that 6-8 m/s are prevailing mostly along the coast at 80 m height. Tamilnadu region (Tuticorin) has winds > 8 m/s for 200 days Gujarat coast has winds > 8 m/s for about 100 days Further in-situ measurements/ validations to estimate the offshore potential. 26 SAR STUDY Ministry has sanctioned a project for the measurements at 100 m and SAR study with M/s Riso-DTU MNRE/C-WET and Risø DTU -mapping the offshore winds near the coast in South India. Ocean wind map from ENVISAT ASAR WSM from 4 December 2010 at UTC in South India. Ocean wind map from ENVISAT ASAR WSM from 25 September 2010 at UTC in South India.
