2 Welcome to Westermost Rough The Westermost Rough Offshore Wind Farm, situated off the Holderness coast, is currently in the latter stages of construction and is expected to reach full power in Once completed the wind farm will comprise 35 Siemens 6MW turbines. 3 Where is Westermost Rough? The Westermost Rough Offshore Wind Farm is situated 8km from the Holderness coast, approximately 25 km north of Spurn Head at the river Humber estuary. 4 Ownership The Project is a joint venture between DONG Energy (50%) and its partners Marubeni Corporation (25%) and the UK Green Investment Bank (25%). How big is it? The area covered is 32 km 2 This is equal to 4,482 KC Stadium football pitches, home to Hull City A.F.C. Each of the 35 turbines is taller than the Humber Bridge. 5 Innovation - what makes this Project special? The Project marks the first commercial deployment of the Siemens 6MW turbine with a 154m rotor span. The 35 turbines are 177m tall from sea level to the highest reach of the blade tips, which is taller than the Humber Bridge. The Project was also DONG Energy s first offshore wind construction in the North East. The first 6MW turbine How much electricity will it produce? The Project has a capacity of 210 mw This means that each year it will provide enough power for over 150,000 homes. 1 What will be the impact on the local economy? 900+ people worked on the offshore construction programme (includes crew transfer vessels and contractors). 54 people directly employed at our offshore construction base in Grimsby million investment in Grimsby and the Royal Dock (includes 1.1 million grant from the Regional Growth Fund). Up to 100 people employed in supporting the DONG Energy Operations and Maintenance base in Grimsby. 1 We base this on a conservative assumed load factor of 34% (which is lower than our UK fleet average for 2014) and a household consumption of 4.2MWh per year. 6 Duncan Clark, Programme Director It s been a really exciting Project. Westermost Rough uses brand new technology, the world s first commercial deployment of these 6MW turbines. We ve also been working to a tight timetable - all the turbines will be up and running less than two and half years from when we made the final investment decision. A personal highlight has been the overwhelmingly warm welcome the wind farm and construction activities have received from the local communities in Hull and Grimsby. What issues did we encounter? The teams have faced many technical challenges, including very busy and tight working arrangements on the site of the new onshore substation. We had to do both the civil and electrical work at the same time, with lots of contractors working alongside each other. Our contractors cooperated really well together, reaching the deadline and achieving a strong safety record. The team have also encountered technically challenging sea-bed conditions, which made installing offshore cables harder than anticipated. With our suppliers we had to develop new technical solutions, use specialist equipment and vessels, and needed to extend this part of the installation campaign into mid-winter to get the job completed.
