25 FLUSHING SEQUENCE 1. open the manual valve to pressurize flushing chamber of PASVEpH 2. turn PASVEpH ball to flushing position 3. open magnetic valve for flushing 4. close the magnetic valve 5. turn PASVEpH ball to the measuring position

26 To secure reliable operation : Use magnetic valve and back flow valve to control flushing flow - Connect back flow valve and manual valve to the input side. Magnetic valve should be on the output side - If a separate sensor tip flushing is used, it must have it s own back flow and magnetic valves

27 Flushing water Flushing water should be warm, cold water increases sticking problems, also cold flushing water may break the process warm sensor tip

28 Increasing the flushing frequency can dramatically improve cleaning effect, once started built-up is difficult to clean with pure water afterwards In hot processes the flushing period should be as long as possible. It extends the life time of the sensor in most cases considerably The sensor impedance can be used to indicate the need for flushing

29 Flushing period and frequency: There are no universal instruction for minimum frequency and period In practical processes they vary between minutes and days Start with higher frequency and reduce that incase of over cleaning

30 Delay times for opening and closing valves are not critical Approximately two second delays are enough Most important thing is that the pressure in the Pasve flushing channel is higher than in the process during the movement of the ball. Note: after the flushing ph-sensor needs it s time to stabilize to the process temperature before the measurement is accurate again

33 ph probe damages : Hydrofluoric acid attacks glass aggressively (special HF glass can withstand up to 200ppm concentration) Sodium hydroxide concentrations over 4% eats glass and decreases probe sensitivity quickly

34 ph-probe service : Once a week check the sensor with buffers use ph 7 buffer make single point calibration Once a month clean the electrode and check the reference electrode coupling use buffers Once a year change reference electrode liquid change the reference electrode coupling check and grease the O-rings Once every second year change the measuring electrode check the reference electrode

35 ph Elektrode storage: storage use ph 4 buffer liquid, refernce liquid or tap water. NEVER in distilled or deionized water dry electrode dry electrode may need 24 hours to recover glass probes can be cleaned with 0.1% HCL (hydrocloric acid), ammonia or acetone

36 ph-probe cleaning : Dirt Cleaning liquid Alkali or boiler sediment Acids Oil, grease 5% HCL or vinegar weak alkali (4% NaOH) Strong washing liquid check the compability with the probe material

37 Recovering ph glass electrode : put electrode to 0.1% HCL solution for 15 s, rinse the electrode put electrode to 0.1% NaOH solution for 15 s rinse again repeat cucles above 4 times put electrode into 20% ammoniumvetydifluoridi ammonium hydrogen difluoride solution for 2-3 minutes

38 ph buffer liquids : Solutions with exact ph and can withstand contamination and dilution so called weak alkalies and acids Using the buffers : Use always fresh buffers Rinse and dry electrodes between buffers Wait the stable reading Don t put warm electrode to cold buffer Let the temperatures to stabilize

39 Measuring ph in low conductivity, below 50 us /cm : Errors : Measurement is sensitive to flow Normal reference coupling are causing potential differences Static electric disturbances are affecting the measurement

40 PASVE Installing the valve

41 Measure A so that connectors for flushing holes can be connected Measure B so that minimum 80mm of the Pasve body is inside inner surface of the pipe If measure B cannot fullfill 80mm minimum requirement (incase of below 200mm pipes), then PASVE must be disassembled and lowest gasket removed before welding. The welding must be carried so that the body temperature remains as small as possible. Additional cooling is recommended. Lowest pipe size with disassemby and cooling is 60mm

42 Machine the Pasve to the same diameter as the pipe. Minimum pipe size is 70 mm.

43 ph probe installation : Don t ground the outer shield of the probe cable. Use isolation valve in sample line 2 m/s sample flow cleans the electrode. Careful with the sensor cleaness Sensor tip must have minimum 10 deg angle compared to horizontal line remember the reference coupling Keep the electrode wet Make sure that the electrodes are in the liquid Find the installation location so that the electrode can be serviced Keep the distance between the electrode and amplifier as small as
