4 !"#$% J!"#$%& A Preliminary Survey on Safety Specification of Commonly Available Safety Belts Many renovation and maintenance workers in Hong Kong like to purchase personal protective equipment including safety belt from metalware shops. As safety belt is the last resort of defence for works at height, its performance is of crucial importance. The Occupational Safety & Health Council conducted a preliminary study on safety labeling of safety belts commonly available in metalware shops during the late 2004 so as to survey: The types of safety belts available in these shops, and Whether these belts are labeled with compliance with any safety. Some OSH products retail shops were also visited to collect information for comparison. Result Summary Totally 26 metalware shops and 5 industrial safety products shops visited were selling safety belts and totally 96 samples were checked. The samples checked were either Safety Harness / Full Body Harness (see photo 1) or General Purpose Safety Belt (see photo 2). If the renovation and maintenance workers wear these safety belts for works at height, the protection is of question. Therefore, workers should be cautious when selecting safety belt to ensure it suits his particular need and the belt complies with related, details could be refer to the Guidance Notes on Classification and Use of Safety Belts and their Anchorage Systems published by Labour Department. 77
