1 Athletic Training/ Sports Medicine Emergency Action Plan Purpose: The purpose of an Emergency Action Plan is to be sure that all members of the athletic department are aware and are knowledgeable of the correct procedures involved in an emergency action plan. Emergency situations can arise at any time during athletic events. And because of this Athletic Training/Sports Medicine staff and the Athletic department must be prepared to act promptly and effectively to provide lifesaving care to the injured person or persons. The following is a plan that will enable all personnel to be able to act correctly and in a timely fashion to any and all emergency situations that may arise in the field of athletics. Being prepared involves an emergency action plan, proper coverage of events, maintenance of appropriate emergency equipment and supplies, utilization of appropriate emergency medical personnel, and continuing education in the area of emergency medicine and planning. Hopefully through proper planning some potential emergencies can be prevented. Identification of Emergency team personnel: 1. Certified Athletic Trainers: ATC s are trained in all first aid and basic life support areas, along with advanced knowledge in orthopedic emergencies. They will always be on site or in direct radio contact of the on-site supervisor. When on site the ATC will have direct cellular phone access for the immediate activation of EMS. If there is any question as to the severity of the specific injury immediately locate the closest ATC and allow them to make the proper referral. If they are not available call EMS (911) immediately 2. EMS is responsible for all advanced life support protocols. Upon their arrival on the scene, all authority and liability is transferred to them and to their departmental emergency medical protocols without question. Any and all negligent or questionable procedures should be documented, signed and dated, and brought up to the proper authorities, (their medical director). 3. Team Physician: a physician may not always be present at every organized practice or competition. If they are present and initial injury evaluation mandates they get involved they are immediately in charge of all care given to athlete. 4. Coaches/Director of Athletics: It is a departmental requirement that all coaches hold a current first aid, adult CPR, and AED certification. This will allow them to perform or help perform CPR, rescue breathing, airway obstruction, AED protocols and basic splinting techniques Athletic Training Equipment Athletic Training Kit: -First aid supplies -latex gloves/biohazard supplies -Shield/CPR mask -blood pressure cuff/stethoscope - Tape supplies -Emergency Phone numbers -Insurance information -Medical conditions list -Towels -pen/paper Emergency Equipment: -AED s (will be with ATC and also in McDonnell Center and Martin Field House) -CPR Mask -Vacuum Splints -Spineboard -Crutches -Slings -Biohazard supplies
