It s perhaps a comforting thought From the President Jim Robinson with the hot weather we ve had here in Central Indiana lately. Well, it is time, and your Board and volunteers have been hard at work making plans for another fantastic year. In fact, the upcoming year is a milestone for our club, which was founded on April 17, That s right as the coming year s ski season nears its end, our club will celebrate it s 50 th anniversary. For those of you who have been in the club for a while, I m sure you can remember all those great ski trips, wonderful meetings, outrageous parties, many friendships, and more than a few romances that have occurred. In order to help celebrate our 50 th anniversary as a club we are planning many things that you ll hear more about during the year. First, in order to kick things and to start the season off with a bang, we re offering annual memberships for this year at a discounted rate of $40 per family and $25 per individual more than a 30% savings from our regular annual membership fees! So, if you know anyone who s interested in joining the club or old members who ve not rejoined, please encourage them to join. Our membership is a true value, and we d like to see some new faces in the club this year. Aa few details concerning upcoming activities: Trips: Dick Surber is Trips VP this year and Priscilla Johnson is Trips VP Elect. They ve been hard at work to come up with a slate of trips that are out of this world. You ll find this year s destinations elsewhere in the Boomer as well as on the club s web-site at

Winter is Coming - Dick Surber-VP Trips Summer just started, so none of us really wants to think about winter. In fact most of us don t really like winter much, but we do love to ski, and that makes winter a little more palatable. I ve been thinking about next winter for a few months now and in doing so have prepared a trip schedule for our club s 50 th anniversary year. This has been a tough year for planning because everything--lodging, airfare and lift tickets costs more this year. We will take 2 OVSC trips: Engelberg, Switzerland and Big Sky MT, and those prices are pretty well fixed by OVSC. I have planned 6 additional trips. In order to get prices and places I thought you would be willing to pay for, I got 33 quotes on 22 properties located in 11 resorts from 4 tour operators. To keep prices down, we have to avoid MLK and President s holidays. We traditionally have a New Years trip, but I had to do something non-traditional to get an affordable price. I think the short trips to Snowmass and Keystone are very well priced. The New Year s trip and the European trip cost less than comparable trips last year. The other 4 trips are comparable in price or are more expensive than similar trips last year. Big Sky at the Huntley Lodge is expensive this year at $1465, but you also have the choice of staying at Big Horn Condos for only $1275. Though the Huntley is more expensive, it is lovely, with a full buffet breakfast and ski-in/ski-out. I thought people might want to treat themselves to something special to celebrate the 50 th anniversary of the club s founding in April of Staying at the Big Horn condos is also very nice, and you can still join in on all the celebration. After seeing prices for trips to the Western U.S. this year, the ski trip to Switzerland looks like a bargain. The dollar has done better against the Swiss Franc and that is part of the reason. The Hotel Terrace in Engelberg is wonderful, and you will especially enjoy the funicular ride to town. In addition, visits to 4 European capitals are on the agenda. If you have been thinking about going to Europe sometime, this trip lets you see a lot for not very much money. This trip is also a wonderful opportunity for non-skiers. Give Europe some thought. Look for full details of all the trips in this Boomer. I hope you like what you see. Our trip leaders are anxious to take you with them. Note that we will have club ski instructors on 4 trips- Beaver Creek, Keystone, Mt Bachelor and Park City. Mark your calendars for August 18 th and come out and sign up for some trips. Final payment dates are early again this year. I will cancel unsold space a few days before final payment date. If you wait very long to sign up, you may well miss your chance. Think about where you want to ski now, and then just do it.

10 Big Mountain lives up to its name After sitting for 70 minutes at the gate on a snowy Saturday morning in Indy, 18 of us finally took off for Big Mountain via Minneapolis. The delay wiped out our 55 min layover and we feared the worst. Stunningly however, we experienced an Airline Miracle, Northwest not only held the flight to Kalispell for us but for our luggage as well! We all made it except for Tom M., who got caught in the snowy traffic on his way to the Indianapolis airport. Even though we sat for on the plane an hour he couldn t get on the flight. NWA took care of Tom flying him later on First Class. He caught up with us at Lunch on Sunday. While there we had a total of over 24 of snow. The snow was beautiful, but it also brought with it some wild weather. Our first afternoon we experienced snow, sleet, sun, fog and wind all with in an hour. Big Mountain s fog is legendary, and at the top of the mountain there were occasions when visibility was 20 feet. We learned to look for the fluorescent red balls marking the center of the runs. Ant Hill was everyone s favorite. The snow ghosts were amazing and had us seeing images. Kristie W. came back a real snow bunny after a particularly snowy day; sometimes a hat helps. Check out the photos on the website. Jerry Baker gave a variety of lessons from a beginner refresher to advanced and moguls. He also showed us the ground sky ground sky technique and reported Bryan S. spent a good deal of time perfecting it. Christy S learned how to be a bridge over troubled Moguls during her lesson. The terrain was wonderful, plenty of steeps, gullies, trees and cruisers. George s Gulley, the bottom of Glory Hole and Picture Chutes provided some a particular challenge. At George s Laura W. and I didn t follow Cindy B. up in time and after a 2 nd warning from the chairlift above to bail out we finally did... but not without removing skis and climbing a 15 side. The embarrassing evidence was finally snowed away three days later. The adventurous crew Bryan, Mel, Frank W, Tom M, Jim G, David H and Jerry went off to the steep & deep and legal Out of Bounds areas and came back regaling us with the stories and lost skiers. Our lone snowboarder Michael W found like-minded boarder s, but the stories must have intrigued him because toward the end of the week he was headed out with the adventurers. Some skied more than others. Andrea was a non skier, Harriet skied and also relaxed at lodge. They also got a tour of the countryside thanks to Rick W. He found out the Friday before we left that a back injury of unknown severity would keep him off the slopes. Charley and Andrea also made a trip to nearby Glacier National Park for a tour while Jennifer tried the snowshoe tour. Rick kindly used his spare time to help arrange the pizza party and provided some DVD entertainment that got us laughing. How many coupins did you need for that beer, Ron? We had very good homemade pizza although one Hawaiian pizza would have been enough. It wasn t a BYOB as some of us found out when we carried our own beverages through the bar to the room... the ice bucket might have been the giveaway. Probably the same bartender who wouldn t let us dress the stuffed bears. Christy S. arranged a group dinner and 15 of us participated. She scouted out a restaurant that would give us the ever popular separate checks. Food was good, but the message about the checks did not get to the help and for some reason Christy didn t want to pick up the $536 tab! They then returned with 15 identical checks. They took another 20 minutes to sort it out, but all ended well. Finally, Saturday arrived, and we watched the weather closely as a big storm headed for the Midwest. We took off close to schedule, but there were nasty rumors on board about MSP. We made our stop in Great Falls and were asked to deplane as MSP was temporarily closed. We overwhelmed the small restaurant, but the solo waitress handled it well. Back on board we knew we d be late and heard more rumors of cancelled flights. We landed 2 ½ hours late but it did not matter, our flight to Indy had been cancelled. While I dealt with trying to get us rebooked Cindy B. got on her cell phone and booked us 6 rooms at a Courtyard. The bulk went to the hotel while Jennifer R stood in line with me to get rebooked for the next morning. Success! We had a harrowing ride to the hotel, but the first group had ordered pizzas. We had a dry pizza party but were too hungry and tired to really miss the beer. Up early Sunday for an 8:30 flight, Bruce showed us how to eat cereal with milk in the security line. We were a bit late leaving MSP for Detroit and spent a few hours in Detroit waiting for our crew, but fortunately there was a restaurant right across from our gate where many camped out. We finally arrived home about 5:00 Sunday (except Laura but that s a whole other story) and our luggage trickled home for the next couple days. Memorable thoughts and quotes: I m going backwards, HELLLOOOO.... I ll tell everyone at once my back isn t broken (what did your PCP see?)... Conversation at the edge of a cliff What cha doing Cindy? Just looking. Put the Colts hat on the bear? Not in my bar!...butt Flaps? A new product for the Ski Rack! Corn snow? Not here, those are ghost chicken heads my friend. Isn t there a door on that stall? I think that tree s in love with you! I couldn t have asked for a better group of people to deal with the extra night in Minneapolis. There was not a whine to be heard from anyone! Thanks- Joan Naffziger Two-fisted phone technique
