1 November-December 2007 Volume 47, No. 6 It s (almost) Time to SKI!!!! Holiday Party at Adam s Mark THURSDAY DECEMBER 6TH (not the 13th) 630 PM Join us for finger food, dancing, and lots of holiday cheer. Dress up nice, just for fun. Shine up those boots, put on some flashy jewelry (the ladies, too), and maybe even shower and splash on smelly stuff. Like we said, it s the holidays! Let s start the Ski Club s 50th year in style! The Prez Speaks by Jim Robinson GRATEFUL This note and 200 dollars showed up in our treasurer s mail recently: Happy 50th Anniversary! Having been involved with this club on and off for many years, I felt compelled to send an anonymous small anniversary gift. It is my hope that the members can use this gift to continue the ski trips and other activities that make this organization great. Hopefully the Indianapolis Ski Club will continue to promote skiing and friendship for another 50 years. A lot of us feel this way. Maybe, as the club celebrates its 50th birthday, we should take the time to tell somebody new to the club how we feel. The holidays are fast approaching and that means ski season is, too! We hope you have already reserved a spot on one of our fabulous trips and are eagerly awaiting the first run. Maybe you d like to know that our total membership for the year is now running ahead of last year, and the number of folks who have signed up for North American trips is also ahead of last year... that s a trend that should make all of our club members proud. I truly believe that the club represents a tremendous value to all of our members. As an example, did you know that your membership entitles you to go on trips sponsored by other area clubs? In case you were not fortunate enough to get on one of the Indy Ski Club trips that you wanted, as a member of the Indy Ski Club, your membership entitles you to book a spot on trips sponsored by ski clubs who are affiliated with the Ohio Valley Ski Council or the Chicago Metropolitan Ski Council. You can find information about those trips on the Indy Ski Club s web site by hitting the link titled Our Partners on the left hand side. Don t forget to attend this year s Christmas holiday party at Adams Mark Hotel on December 6 th. We have arranged a gala evening for you featuring great hors d oeuvres and dancing to tunes spun by Baby Boomer Sound. So, bring a friend or come by yourself to join us for an evening of fun, food, drinks, and music. It'll be a holiday party, so wear your fun clothes of the season and come celebrate with your friends. Non-members are always welcome and can join the fun for a $5 guest fee a great way to introduce your friends to the club! In January, the Club will sponsor a Learn to Ski Better day at Perfect North, so please think about friends and family who you d like to introduce to the joy of skiing. Our great group of instructors will be on hand to teach new folks as well as others who want to improve their own skills. Watch the club s web-site and the next newsletter for more details as the date draws nearer. Think SNOW!!!! - Jim

3 Trips are Selling Out!!! by Dick Surber, Trips VP Thanks for supporting our trips this season. The first six trips on our western/european schedule are either sold out or nearly sold out. Here is how it stands: -Snowmass- We originally had 24 spaces. We are now taking 30 on the trip. SOLD OUT, wait listed -Salt Lake Safari- We originally had 24 spaces. We are taking 31 on the trip. SOLD OUT, wait listed -No more people can be added to Snowmass or Salt Lake. But people DO cancel, creating an opening. Wait list!! -Beaver Creek- The original 36 spaces have been sold, with 3 on the waiting list. We have 6 air seats left and would look into getting another condo if we had 6 on the wait list. Final payment date is coming up fast though. -Keystone- The original 28 spaces have been sold. We have 2 air seats left, but we need 4 more people to fill an additional condo. This one is likely closed except for a waiting list. -Mt Bachelor- The 32 spaces have been sold, but we have 4 air seats left & are checking on additional room availability to expand the trip. Engelberg Switzerland- We have only 3 spaces left. Seven people have joined in the last week. How about some Spring skiing? This looks like your only option at this time, but it s not a bad thing. In fact, it is a very good thing. Spring skiing can have LOTS of snow as well as plenty of warm sunshine. Park City (Saturday, 3/15 to Saturday, 3/22) and Big Sky (Saturday 3/29 to Saturday 4/5) both have open spaces. I have heard that some think Park City is too low in altitude for Spring skiing. The bases at Park city, Canyons and Deer Valley are at about 6,000 to 6,500 feet and the tops are between 9,600 and 10,000 feet. Spring skiing is usually excellent at these resorts. Big Sky is an Ohio Valley Ski Council trip with over 200 OVSC skiers, which adds to the fun. You can practically skiin/ski-out at the superb Huntley Lodge. Why not come out and help celebrate the end of the Indy Ski Club s 50 th anniversary ski season? Last article we discussed three common skiing myths. I hope you have been practicing and now understand the need for up/down movement, committing to the outside ski, and how to make turns without rotating. Let s now continue and discuss another common issue. One big problem a lot of us struggle with in racing is staying out of the back seat. I know this has been the source of a lot of grief for me. After years of coaching and an obscene amount of money spent, I think I have it nailed down. The first big no-no is skiing with your hands and arms down at your side. If your arms are down, you are in the back seat, period. Get your arms up in what I call the hug the big tree position. Hands comfortably in front, elbows slightly out. This keeps your arms and hands ready for the pole plant. The pole plant is now a flick of the wrist. No wild arm movement needed. The second no-no is skiing stiff legged. If your legs are straight and stiff, your weight is on your heels and you are again in the back seat. Think of a tennis player waiting to return a serve. They are standing with knees bent, in an athletic position. That is also our ski position. Like we discussed previously, move down during the turn and project up and forward as you exit the turn. By projecting up and forward (while keeping your hands up), your upper body stays ahead of your skis. Think of always pulling your skis down the hill, never pushing. If you are pulling, you are skiing. If you are pushing, you are being skied. The third no-no is letting your inside ski run ahead or what is commonly called excessive tip lead. When you finish one turn and project up and shift your weight to the new ski, that new ski needs to be underneath you. Think about that. If you let it get ahead, when you shift your weight to it, you will be behind it. Peek down at you ski tips during turns. Hold the uphill or inside ski back. Under most circumstances, a couple inches of tip lead is all you should have. Last, think about the feedback from your skis. Learn to feel your edges and what they are doing to the snow. Are they moving side to side or tip to tail? Look back at your tracks. Are there clean lines; carving, or no lines; skidding? Learn to be patient and let the skis do the work. We want the skis turning us, not us turning the skis. To wrap this all up, keep it simple. 1.) Hands up, hug the big tree. 2.) Get low during the turn; project up and forward as you exit the turn. 3.) Keep your inside or uphill ski held back or underneath you. 4.) Be patient. Do not rotate. Lead with your inside shoulder and let the skis turn you. In the future we can discuss speed control, turn shape, and skiing offensively vs. defensively. Now get out there, have fun and practice, practice, practice. And regardless of whether you race or not, check out a free lesson from one of our club s instructors. Russ Boehm More information is at
