3 Whistler Canada Fam Trip The morning of November 28 th I boarded a plane on my way to Whistler Blackcomb Ski Resort, the skiing site of the most recent Olympic Winter Games. I was one of 16 people who would be visiting lodging sites, restaurants, the village, and the ski slopes of Whistler Blackcomb with the prospect of our club skiing there in the near future. (a FAMiliarization trip). Our group was from Pittsburgh, the Dallas area, Appleton and Green Bay, the Chicago area and ME from Indianapolis. When I received my itinerary I thought that I was going to be stranded in Seattle, but was told that everyone would meet at the Seattle airport then bus for 4½ hours to Whistler. It was explained to me that the cost of the bus from Seattle to Whistler is a little more that the cost of a bus from Vancouver to Whistler. If clubs wanted to save money they could use the bus and not have the additional cost of the air flight from Seattle to Vancouver. When I groaned about having to ride the bus for hours, I was reminded that the bus ride from Denver to Aspen takes about the same amount of time. We did have to contend with rush hour traffic and a stop at the border to go through Customs, but the driver was great, and the long ride passed without any issues. As we checked into the Tantalus Resort Lodge, we were met by our Whistler Tourism guide who led us to a local restaurant for a meal, then back to the hotel where we quickly fell asleep. Our first day began at 7:00 am as we met in the lobby, visited two different hotels, ate breakfast, and then were led to the rental shop to be fitted for skiing. Whistler Tourism arranged for ski instructors to be our guides on our first day. They helped us around parts of the mountain, then took us to our catered lunch and gave us helpful skiing tips. In the middle of the afternoon we met for après ski at a hotel in the center of the village for a site inspection and drinks. Our guide led us to the Brew House for dinner a great place for club dinners. Friday morning we met at 7:30 am and walked to the Whistler Westin for a site inspection and a fantastic complimentary breakfast. Then we were off to two more site inspections and then skiing for a few hours. Our afternoon après ski was at a Blackcomb Mountain site. After that tour we got on a local bus to inspect a slightly remote hotel, then headed back to get ready for dinner. On the way to dinner our group was treated to pre-dinner cocktails as we were given a tour of one of Whistler s boutique hotels. Dinner that evening was at a great German restaurant, again compliments of Whistler Tourism. Saturday was a day for individual skiing and exploration while our hosts from Winter Ski and Sport talked to people from Texas. During the afternoon some of us skied, some were given the chance to snowmobile, and some of us (ME included) went to the Scandinave Spa. At the Spa we were treated to Scandinavian baths that included hot pools and saunas, then COLD plunges. This treatment is known as hydrotherapy. The pools are outside at different levels and surrounded by pine trees. Snow was falling as we walked from pool to pool. What an experience! Before dinner we visited a nearby hotel, then walked to a scrumptious Italian meal. Sunday at 6:30 am our group got on a bus for the two-hour trip to the Vancouver airport. Big fluffy snow flakes were coming straight down and the plows were scraping the roads. What a send off a picture perfect Winter Wonderland scene. When people talk about skiing at Whistler, they almost always talk about the weather. Well, we did have light rain and clouds during two of the days, but rain in the village means fresh powder at the top, and there is A LOT of mountain above the rain line. The resort has installed the Peak to Peak gondola which allows you to ski the upper sections of both mountains all day if you want to. Note that SKI Magazine s poll recently rated Whistler as the Number One overall resort. This trip was a wonderful experience, and I want to thank Karl and Shari Winter from Winter Ski and Sport for inviting me (as your club representative) to join them for a few days in Whistler Canada to scout out a potential destination for the Indianapolis Ski Club. 4 Mt Bachelor Fam Trip In October I was invited to join Ski.com to visit Mt Bachelor in Oregon, December 6 through December 10. I had worked with Ski.com in making the arrangements for this year s trip to Whitefish Montana. The point of the visit was to look at potential lodging sites and the ski resort to determine if our club might want sponsor a future trip to that Bachelor. I joined representatives from 16 other ski clubs from literally all over the U.S., and four Ski.com reps for the visit. About half of us met in Portland and were driven 3 hours to Bend, Oregon. The other half (the smarter half) flew to Redmond, Oregon and were driven 15 minutes to Bend. Redmond is out in the high desert plains and does not have the flight issues we often encounter in places like Aspen. Mt Bachelor is a big and beautiful mountain. With 3683 skiable acres, it is the 5 th or 6 th largest ski area in the lower 48 states. It was an active volcano so it has that beautiful conical shape as you approach. They had already had seen 150 inches of snowfall; they had a total of 650 last year. You can ski off the top in all 360 degrees of direction. The backside is all double black diamonds, but the front side has a lot of ski runs for all levels of skiing ability. The base and onmountain day facilities are first class. Mt Bachelor maintains several snowshoe trails on the mountain for non-skiers. There is also a dogsled facility at the base of the mountain (you can ski to it) operated by Rachael Scdoris and her dad. Rachael is legally blind and has participated in 4 Iditarod races. The dog sledding was a blast. There are no overnight lodging facilities at Mt Bachelor, so you stay in or near Bend, about 20 miles from the mountain. Bend is a great town with 80,000 people. It s the largest town in Oregon east of the Cascades and has a vibrant and very walkable downtown that has 35 of over 200 total restaurants. Bend has more breweries (and each has a pub) per capita than any city in the country. (Ed note forget about buying a Budweiser here!) It is an artsy town with lots of galleries and several theatres. There are 9 wineries nearby and a lot of adventures for the skier and non-skier alike. Wanderlust Tours took us on a night time snowshoe walk in the woods to a bonfire with drinks and desert. It was a starlit night and was just wonderful. They offer many other types of tours to some of the geologic wonders of the area. The High Desert Museum is a wonderful experience and can easily take half a day. Crater Lake is also a day trip away. We stayed in the Riverhouse Hotel which sits beside the Deschutes River on the northern edge of town. Our club stayed there in We also toured the Phoenix Inn, a very nice hotel right downtown, as well as the Sunriver Resort about 20 minutes out of town. All of the facilities had their charms and their unique advantages and disadvantages. My thanks to Dana Flach of Ski.com for the great trip. In 2014, it will have been 6 years since our club has visited Mt Bachelor. By then it may be time to consider another visit. Dick Surber, VP Trips A great Holiday Party! At least 75 club members and guests attended the Holiday party on December 13 at George s Neighborhood Grill. We were served a delicious sit-down dinner featuring a few of the restaurant s signature dishes, and a few club members participated in a gift exchange. We also collected food for the food bank. A few folks from the Indiana School for the Blind presented their program. They intend to take five of their students to Colorado this winter for a special adaptive skiing event. Richard Rader reports that we chipped in 891 dollars among the party-goers, and the club matched another 500 bucks. So we donated a lot of dollars to the Blind School s new ski club. We also donated a lot of used clothing for the students. IN THIS ISSUE : It s SNOWING out west! A few of us have already hit the slopes! And there are is just ONE SPACE left on club trips. President Lisa presents a check to Brittany Helwig, ISBVI ski club coordinator and James Durst, Superintendent/CEO of ISBVI.

5 View from the Sky by Mel Crichton, Newsletter editor By the time you read this Cathy and I (and the dogs) will be on our way back to Montana. If you have put off reading this rag, we are already IN Montana. I hope the hangover was worth it. I got to ski Big Sky a few weeks ago, and even though the base was less than 2 feet (it was December! ) the snow and snowfall were fantastic! Conditions were much better than last December. I got 5 days of powder and tree skiing for my Christmas present. Now I wish I had spent a bit more time getting into shape.. One highlight of the long weekend (aside from stocking the pantry and buying beer) was my biennial PSIA instructor clinic. I got to ski with some of the best instructors; one was on the US international team. One session was an afternoon of dealing with students physical limitations this was really appropriate, not only because I have had a few surgeries, but because many of our club also have a few problems. I was looking at the NOAA weather predictions for this coming winter. El Nino is back, but not as strong as in the past. So they predict we ll have normal temperatures and precipitation in the northern 2/3 of the country. Meaning that, if you go on any Indy Club trip to the Rockies, you SHOULD have decent skiing. It might even mean that the Learn To Ski day at Perfect North Slopes will be cold. Let s keep our fingers crossed. We ll see some of you at Whitefish and Beaver Creek. And no, I won t be trying to beat last season s 107 days on the slopes. If I ski my age, I ll be tired enough. Learn To Ski & Snowboard Month, January 2012 Humans Were Never Meant to Hibernate! January 2012 is Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month. Ski areas and resorts in 34 states are celebrating with special offers to get children and adults out on the snow and taking lessons from a professional instructor. A new Web site provides a listing of states with locations where learning programs are taking place. The site helps those new to snow sports with practical information on getting started and also includes tips for those who want to improve. Learn to Ski & Snowboard Month is an industry initiative organized by the National Ski Areas Association, the Professional Ski Instructors of America-American/Association of Snowboard Instructors, the National Ski Patrol, SnowSports Industries America, numerous state and regional resort associations, industry partners and the snow sports media. Indy Ski Club is offering its own learn to ski day on January 5 at Perfect North Slopes, but you must ACT QUICKLY to be assured of a space. See the ad on page 1. 7 The Prez Speaks (by Lisa Sindelar) The Indy Ski Club is close to ushering out 2012, and I must say the members made it a very remarkable, heart-warming year. We enjoyed record attendance (80+) at the Christmas party, and I THANK YOU all for being flexible at the beginning of the evening. George s Neighborhood Grill did an outstanding job of making the dinner formal and memorable. It was wonderful to see so many members and guests enjoying good conversation and good food that night. What made the night truly special was a presentation from Brittany Helwig and Jim Durst of Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Let me explain I have always hoped for the club (can t recall if I verbalized it) to find an avenue to make an impact in our community. And we all tend to think that, as membership declines or stays flat, we should reach out to the youth/young adults to grow our group (which we will still strive to do with local high school clubs). However, I hope this is a start of a beautiful partnership that helps spread the word about a sport we all are passionate for I received a call one morning (ironically the day of a board meeting) from Brittany Helwig of the Indiana School for the Blind & Visually Impaired. She moved from Florida where she had run a ski club at their school and was going to re-start a ski club at ISBVI. She was reaching out to me to see if our members had any ski clothing they could donate. I was extremely intrigued and asked many questions, so she also explained she was hoping to fundraise $$ to take 5-6 students to Colorado for an adaptive winter clinic. I felt our group needed to help - these children would really appreciate such an opportunity. Thus came my idea to pass the hat at the Christmas party to collect a little cash for their expenses to the clinic and ask the club to match $$ from our treasury. AND, all of you overwhelmingly responded!! We collected $891 that evening, the club donated $500 and with a few other laterdonations, we, the Indianapolis Ski Club, presented $1500 to ISBVI for kids to attend the clinic. I can t say thank you enough!! The Superintendent of ISBVI invited me back to their recent Christmas program, and I kept thinking these kids are so talented and special. I truly hope this is the start of a great relationship that will have mutual benefits in the city for both groups. I must also say thank you for again your wonderful response of canned goods that we donated to St Vincent De Paul food pantries every can helps to make a difference. As we wind down our membership meetings and head off to the mountains over the next few months, please mark your calendars for the Meltdown meeting on April 11 th, as the tentative plan is for Brittany of ISBVI to return and tell the group about their trip to Winter Park for the ski clinic. Speaking of trips, let s hope Mother Nature opens up the skies and releases many powder days! I can only speak for my trip North Lake Tahoe but they are enjoying great conditions up to this point, and I hope it continues well into February! It has been a great year so far and on behalf of the officers and committee members, we appreciate you and hope you continue to talk about the club while out and around the town! Enjoy the holidays and see you soon on the slopes! Lisa
