1 U10/U12 NEWS Call to Action Upcoming Events Race Results Coach s Corner Ski Season is Underway As a coach, the hope is to see athletes believe deep in their hearts that they are capable of achieving anything they put their minds to. if only we had more snow! It was a busy weekend for parents, skiers, and coaches with races at Alpine Meadows and Northstar and lots of schedule changes. Thanks to all the coaches who support all the groups across all the training and races. The skiers couldn't do what they do without you. Congratulations to all the skiers and thank you for supporting your teammates. Thank you to all the parents, too. Upcoming Events Ullr Fest - Feb 2-3 Be sure to have your children join the Torchlight Parade on Friday evening after practice. It is fun for all! Call to Action - Ullr Fest Auction Donations We need the following donations: - Local accommodation for the auctioneer Feb bottles of wine ($20) - 5 bottles of wine ($35) - Additional silent auction items Call to Action - Ullr Fest Desserts We are looking for volunteers to make 20 desserts for our Ullr Fest Gala dinner on Feb 3. The big winner last year was chocolates paired with a bottle of port. We look forward to auctioning your creative and delicious desserts. 3 A PARENT TALKS TO A CHILD BEFORE THEIR FIRST SKI RACE This is your first race, my child. I hope you win. I hope you win for your sake, not mine. Because winning s nice. It s a good feeling. Like the whole world is yours. But, it passes, this feeling. And what lasts is what you have learned. And what you learn about is life. That s what sports is all about. Life. The whole thing is played out in a day. The happiness of life. The miseries. The joys. The heartbreaks. There s no telling what ll turn up. There s no telling, whether they ll toss you out of the race or whether you ll stay for the long haul. There s no telling how you ll do. You might be a hero or you might be absolutely nothing. There s just no telling. Too much depends on chance. On how the ball bounces. I m not talking about the race, my child. I m talking about life. But, it s life that the ski races is all about. Just as I said. Because every ski race is life. And life is a ski race. A serious ski race. Dead serious. But that s what you do with serious things. You do your best. You take what comes. You take what comes. And you run with it. Winning is fun. Sure. But winning is not the point. Wanting to win is the point. Not giving up is the point. Never being satisfied with what you ve done is the point. Never letting up is the point. Never letting anyone down is the point. Ski to win. Sure. But lose like a champion.
