1 LIFTLINE A PUBLICATION OF THE OC SKI CLUB APRIL I m Out of Control President s Corner Matt Fabrizio, President Spring skiing is right around the corner!!! Thank the snow spirits for the latest dump of snow hopefully a lot of you had a chance to enjoy it other than driving through it. The season is not over with plenty of activities left including the end of the season BBQ, white water rafting and volleyball signups. Remember elections are coming up followed by the banquet. Let s continue to get to meeting sign up so the buses keep running. Goggle tans!!! It is that time of year to see who can get the most epic goggle tan. If you need a few more reasons other than snow to participate in outdoor activities, here you go: Boost creativity Experiencing the outdoor increases creativity and inspires you with new ideas. So shutdown that laptop and strap on your skis Improves your mood Whether you suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) or not, studies show a minimum of 5 minutes spent outside boosts your mood and selfesteem Vitamin D Helps fights infections and boosts your immune system Active Recovery No matter how hard you work out studies show that lower level exercise that increases circulation will speed recovery time Heal better those that spend more time outside tend to sleep better and studies show people participating in outdoor activities use less medications Thank you!!! Once again as elections come up many people will be leaving positions and we will be in need of volunteers to help keep the ski club running. I truly appreciate everybody that has given their best this season to make sure buses run, trips take place and we have all the activities that bring us together as a club. Stay safe see you on the slopes! Administration Cathy Marvin, Vice President for Administration Four BIG things happening this month 1) Election night is April 13. We need volunteers for that night please contact Jill Bryce at jillbryce@yahoo.com. We will have a bake sale that night to support Fundraising please bring some dessert items to sell. Thanks in advance. 2) Installation Banquet or Year End Party will be Thursday, April 20 at Martel s Restaurant at Capital Hills Golf Course. Very reasonably priced thank you Mark for finding this place. See separate article with more details. Monthly HH moved to Wednesday, April 26 at the Allen St Pub at 332 S Allen Street in Albany, starting at 5:30. 3) White Water Rafting will be on Saturday, April 29. Yup after we Rock the Vote, we are going to Rock the Boat! We will meet and carpool at Exit 9 Park and Ride at 8:00 am. See article for pricing. One of our guides will be Mike Chotkowski who finally completed his Applicant requirements to become an OC Member, Congratulations. We can have a HH afterwards so BYOB. 4) Volleyball league registration opens on April 20. We once again will have 4 s on Monday and 6 s on Tuesday. Tara will be returning to run Monday nights thank you. We need someone to step up and run Tuesday nights. If you play on Tuesday, please consider taking this on (you are already there that s a big part of the duty). There is an OC recognition comp set up as a Thank You. Contact Cathy at admin@ocskiclub.org for more info. Gail will be helping again this year to get the team players registered. Thank you for all that you do for the Club. Whether you celebrate Easter or Passover have a good Holiday.

2 BBQ SEASON! So here is it April, where the hell did the winter go? It seems, not that long ago, that I was so excited to get back on the slopes. Now I only have 4 more weeks to enjoy before I suffer through another summer. I am a skier! Albeit a powder snob but skiing is always on my mind. Already got my western trip figured out for next season. Might squeeze in two next year. Looking forward to the annual Smuggs trip in January. I encourage you to get out, get a little mountain tan (it s called racoon eyes), maybe a scraped elbow, a drink at the umbrella bar, that last bit of snow in the trees and a bunch of spring skiing laughs. The sun seems to make everyone a little bit cheerier on the slopes (I d Organized Skiing Fred Haefeli aka Woodtick, Vice President for Organized Skiing skiing@ocskiclub.org rather have a blizzard!). Can you tell I am a little grumpy now that the end is near? I am writing this article on March 12th so the ANNUAL OC KILLINGTON BBQ details are not set yet. But they will be when you look at this Liftline. Don t miss out on this grand end of year FUN event. Once the skiing is over don t forget that we have activities for our members all year long. Keep an eye on the website for the Fun things that will be happening. Meetings are only twice a month starting in May till the end of September. So to keep up to date, check the website and look for the OC s. I ll struggle along and try to look like I am having fun at these events until the snow starts flying again next fall. OC Ski Club Heavenly - Lake Tahoe Trip VP of Skiing Spirit Photo: Let s eat some BBQ! Remember! We keep skiing until we do not get the required minimum 2 1 sign-ups by Thursday night. Check the OC WEBSITE for the LATEST INFO, it s more critical now, as the ski season winds down!! This was a truly a Heavenly trip! With a record setting seasonal snowfall of 556, 84 of which fell in the six days we were there! The three mountain passes that provide access to the region closed Sunday after we arrived and didn t fully reopen until Wednesday after the storm moved out. Our timing couldn t have been better. Skiing and riding on the mountain was fantastic with two to three feet of powder on most trails and the unexplored bowls. Sunday s partially cloudy skies gave us peaks of Lake Tahoe while playing in 8 to 12 of powder on the upper mountain. What a great first day! Monday and Tuesday proved challenging with heavy snow fall that resulted in upwards of 48 of new snow. Several of us chose to explore the local area and saw the movie Hidden Figures. Wednesday the sun returned and powder was everywhere. We started from the Nevada Stage Coach side, crossed the state line and ended at the California Lodge. After a full day of out of control powder skiing, we were happily exhausted. Lots of powder stories at dinner that night! Thursday we made our excursion to Kirkwood after rescheduling twice due to closure of the passes. Kirkwood also had a welcome 2 to 4 of powder and everyone was exploring the Double Diamonds, Canyons and Bowls to find the ever desired fresh powder. Snow banks along the roadway were enormous, towering as high 15 or more. Condos along the route were buried up to the third floor windows. Hopefully this will cure California s drought! Saturday we left just before the next storm hit, depositing another 7. While waiting for our departure, we learned that due to power issues, there were closures of the Nevada lodge and lifts. Perfect timing again and a smooth flight home. Injuries were a minimum with Vibe getting an MRI showing he had a slight tear in his left MCL. With physical therapy he should recover in two months to board again next year. Trip Leader, Russ Wolensky reporting

3 Alpine Bus Committee Eileen Finn-LeMatty & Lynda Heaney OC BUS COMMITTEE SAYS LET IT continue to - SNOW Onward into April. Buses struggled in early March as we had unusual Spring weather and much snow melt. Sigh. But then, the temps dropped and the mountains fired up the snow guns again. Better yet - VOILA! BIG NOR EASTER STELLA HIT. Thanks Rich;) Two & Three FEET of snow at the mountains filled those buses back up by St. Patrick s day! The Lake Placid Trip hit the jackpot just as Sunday River, St. Anton, Tahoe and Keystone did! So, we will keep on skiing and riding. We even had 2 Buses for St Patricks Day and 2 for Bromley that Sunday! Beautiful Bluebird sky s and over 100 OC ers each! Though, the usual number of No shows still happened ;) (too bad, both were great days!!) The Schedule has expanded, hopefully all the way through April, still working on lift costs. We will go as long as the lifts are running! We plan to try to have the BBQ Saturday April 15th and head to Moguls for their Pig Roast if possible - unknown date at this point. Things are still in planning/ negotiation stages. The same rules of sign up will apply. We NEED 21 paid sign ups in order for there to be a bus otherwise, surely there will be car pools. The die hards like to hang in until the last puddle of snow is dry! ** At the March Board meeting, the Board decided that WE WILL ALLOW FAMILIES TO SIGN UP AND RIDE ON THE REMAINING BUSES IN ORDER TO HELP FILL TO 21. Families, remember OC Buses can get rowdy and rambunctious, so if you are not willing to ride in those situations, the the drive up policies are for you! All others, if you prefer not to ride with families on board, then the drive up policies are for you! Making everyone happy is impossible. We do the best we can. It has been an odd and interesting season but all in all, really, FUN was had by all! TO REPEAT FROM LAST MONTH - I am going to retire from the Bus Committee at the end of this month, and Board at the end of May. I KNOW I hear applause but trust me it is mostly from ME AND CHUCK ;). If there is anyone interested in learning, and becoming a part of the Bus Committee, PLEASE come forward ASAP so I can show you the many aspects of OC Bus life. I won t lie, it is a lot of work - that is why we need at least 3 people doing it. I have been struggling this season and SEVERAL wondeful people stepped in and helped, so don t think that WE won t still help. Scheduling and planning begins now, so if you want a schedule by October/November, now is the time to begin. The policies will still be the same, unless the Committee changes them and the Board approves them. Many, Many, Many thanks, again, to all of you who helped in so many ways this season. I was crazy and you all helped keep it to a minimum (Imagine if you weren t there to help lol). Everyone, please THANK YOUR BUS LEADERS they really do get you all on that Mountain every week! Let s all wish Lynda all good VIBES for her health, hope she is able to get back on her feet and back to the club soon! Finally - THANK YOU TO ALL OUR MOUNTAIN REPS. YOU ALL MAKE THE JOB A PLEASURE AND THE OC SKI CLUB VALUES OUR WONDERFUL RELATIONSHIPS (and the skiing, we had a blast doing that too!) We only wish we could bring buses to all the mountains more often (but know many of us do have passes and do get there on days when buses are not running too!). MEMBERS: DON T FORGET TO COME AND VOTE IN THE OC ELECTIONS, ATTEND THE INSTALLATION BANQUET, AND ENJOY THE SUMMER HAPPY HOURS AND ACTIVITIES! The OC Ski Club wants and needs YOU to continue to participate and to spread the word! Cross Country Trails Barbara Sorrell Cross Country Chair In early March, (25) OC cross country skiers magically found 5 of fresh powder on a nice base of trails in the Tug Hill Plateau. This area is famous for its heavy winter snow and did not disappoint. All other cross country ski areas were closed with mud and puddles vs snow. With the mid-march storm, the cross country folks hope to dance on skis until April 1. Happy trails. Smiles on Skis - Osceola Hard Core OC XC Gang Tug Hill Plateau

4 OC Secretary Sylvia Haefeli I apologize to the members, I got so busy in February that I forgot to write the monthly article on our February meeting for March LiftLine. Our members do realize that these articles are written and submitted by the 15th of the month for the next month publication. So here it is March 12, the day after a really great Winter Carnival that so many members missed. Joyce Bard and Fred Haefeli put on one heck of a party at Magic. Plus we got 4 fresh inches to ski on. First run was Magical. LOL In February, the Board decided not to send anyone to the Mtn. Symposium held out West at a ski mountain. That meeting is usually a 3 day conference and costs the Club about $500 to send one person. Instead the Club will send a delegation to the Mtn. Symposium held in New Jersey by the same company. The western mountain resorts as well as the ski trip travel companies attend. It is one day, Sunday May 7 and is OC Board Meeting Secretary Notes free. Bob Hossan review our budget and we are on track to post a break even budget. Our forecast of a huge deficit is not coming true. That was welcome news. The Club has decided to participate in the Adirondack Summer Sports Expo in Saratoga March 18 and 19. Frank Coleman will head up the volunteers to man the booth. He will highlight our summer activities to attract new members. At the March meeting, Cathy Marvin, VP of Admin, proposed places and dates for our Installation Banquet. Cathy will also schedule our summer Wednesday meetings on the River Barge at the Albany river front. Fred Haefeli, VP of Org. Skiing, presented his report on skiing activities as the season winds down. Bus ridership is decreasing with the lack of new snow and warm days. Hopefully March is usually the snowiest month each winter and will boost the ridership. Both races held at West Mountain, ours and the Albany Ski Club, were moved from Sat to Sun in February. There were 19 racers in the first race and 18 in the second race. Only 3 OCers raced as representatives of the Club. Maureen Klein, president of the ski council, spoke with the Board to get feedback on reasons why racing has experienced such a down turn. Many reasons were given but the most obvious one is the culture of skiing has changed. More skiers are interested in other aspects of skiing other than racing. Many of our newer members are simply not interested in racing. Maureen is planning on attending meetings of other ski clubs to get their feedback as well. The Council will review the information she gathers to decide the future of council sponsorship of racing. No decision will be reached without a thorough review and discussion at the Council meetings held the first Wednesday of each month, Sept-May. All OC members can attend Council meetings and participate in the discussion. The Board plans to review the Recognition policy and the Instructor reward policy at the first meeting of the new fiscal year, June Members are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the policies, posted on the Website, and give their opinion to current Board members and officers as well as the Instructor group headed by Jeff Kenton. These policies are routinely reviewed and edited as needed. Members are encouraged to inform the Board and committee chairpersons about ideas and suggestions to make our Club more successful and responsive to member needs. Nominations for officers and Board members were the last two meetings in March and the election is set for April13. So get involved and run for office. WE NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS TO RUN THIS GREAT CLUB. Please continue those Snow Dances, the Ski/ Board season is winding down! I am loving the snow, lots of March snow. 5 Retro Winter Carnival 2017 Magic always brings out the best in the OC s. First off, I want to thank Joyce Bard for her leadership on this annual event. Everyone who attended had a blast. Even the ones who we had to coax to play a game were smiling after their game of fun. The crowd was great cheering (plus laughing) on the competitors. The ritual tug of war did not go so good for the guys. The ladies won two heats hand down. And I thought those guys were young & strong?! Mother nature helped us out by delivering an average of 3 inches (some places more, some less) of new snow the night before. So, I personally got fresh tracks on every run I made. The warning of crazy cold really didn t seem that bad. Once we got to mid-morning, it was skiing as usual. Jeff Kenton & I really got Retro by skiing on 203 cm Volkl slalom skis that Jeff brought from his stockpile. It brought back the good old days when my friends use to call me One Turn. The day was full of great times with the OC s from the bus ride up (why did we need toilet paper?) to the bus ride back. Joyce had a great variety of games to play. Everyone got in the spirit of the Winter Carnival and showed the folks at Magic what the OC s are all about. Skiing, because we love the sport regardless of any threating weather questions, having a grand time with our OC brothers & sisters by letting our hair down (some more than others), and then coming home with fond memories of the day. One last shout out to Joyce plus all the folks who rocked the Magic at Winter Carnival. Happy WC participate Fred Haefeli VP of Ski White Water Rafting Adventure A fun, fast paced, exhilarating trip through the Upper 17 Mile Hudson River Gorge with OC Friends Let s ROCK THE BOAT!!!!
