1 2005 University of New Mexico Skiing Final Release For Immediate Release Contact: Jay Blackman (505) SKI TEAM NEWS Coming off the school s first ever NCAA title last season, expectations were high for the UNM ski team in The Lobos were impressive, finishing third in the extremely competitive Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association regular season race. However, UNM was unable to repeat their title performance from a year ago, placing fourth at the NCAA s Championships in Stowe, Vt. It was the seventh year in a row UNM finished in the top-5 and the fourth consecutive year in the top-4 at the NCAA finals. The Lobos totaled 518 points in the four-day event, while the University of Denver won its 18th national title. The Pioneers won with a total of points. Vermont finished second by 47.5 points (575) and Utah was third with 545 points. The Lobo women won their third straight title in the Nordic freestyle, garnering 94 points in their 15K race. Five UNM skiers garnered All-American honors, including senior Martina Stursova (Cl/Fr), juniors Gladys Weidt (Sl) and Trine Lundamo (Cl/Fr) and sophomores Lars Loeseth (Sl/GS) and Dirk Grimm (Cl/Fr). "We had a lot of opportunities this week, but we could not take advantage of them," stated UNM head coach George Brooks. "Things did not come together for us this year like they did last season. We thought we could have done a little better, but a top-4 finish is still a top-4 finish." The Lobos were once again impressive in the classroom as well, totaling 11 skiers on the Academic All-NCAA team. Members included seniors Stursova, Alexander Freberg, Pirkko Pulkkanen and Andrea Roberts, juniors Lundamo, Geir-Endre Rogn, Kathrin Spendier and Helena Woodrow, sophomore Loeseth and freshman Tiffany Callahan.
