1 2003 University of New Mexico Skiing For Immediate Release Contact: Jay Blackman (505) Season Recap SKI TEAM NEWS 2003 Season: The 2003 University of New Mexico Ski Team continued its tradition of strong performances both on and off the field this past season. The Lobos finished in fourth place at the NCAA Championships in Hanover, N.H. Jimmy Vika, Martina Stursova, Caroline Schicht, Kristina Strandberg, Jenny Wissting, and Lars Krogsveen all earned All-American honors while Vika won the men s 10K Freestyle National Title. Vika became the eighth Lobo to win an individual NCAA Championship. The women s Nordic team of Strandberg, Wissting, and Stursova won the women s 5K Freestyle National Title for the 12th NCAA Team Championship in school history. The Lobos also had 10 skiers named to the Academic All-American team in The Lobos had a strong regular season performance in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association, winning two races for the first time in school history. The Lobos won the Utah-Alaska meet on January for their first win since the 1994 season. UNM then won Western State s meet on February for their second win of the season. The women s Alpine Team finished the regular season as the top-ranked team in the RMISA, finishing second overall in the slalom and giant slalom events. Vika finished the 2003 season as the No. 1 ranked skier in the men s freestyle. He won every race he entered in the 2003 season. Schicht, Jennifer Delich, Johan Rydquist, Vika, Strandberg, Stursova, and Wissting all earned All-RMISA honors for the Lobos. Head coach George Brooks concluded his 3 year as the head coach of the Lobos with his fifth consecutive top-5 finish and 2 straight top-10 finish at the NCAA Championships. Coach Brook is the only head coach in the program s history and has coached 70 NCAA All-Americans over the years. The Lobos earned a over a 3.5 grade-point-average for the 1 straight year. 2 Recapping Last Alpine Event RMISA Event NCAA West Regionals February 23-24, 2003 Winter Park, Colo. - The University of New Mexico Ski Team couldn t rally past Denver and finished in fourth place at the NCAA West Regional Championships. While the Nordic teams had some strong showings in their races, the only bright spot for the Alpine squad was Carolina Schicht s 10th place finish in the women s Slalom. Galdys Weidt placed 14th in the Slalom while Jennifer Delich came in 16th to lead the women to a fourth place overall finish. The Lobo women s fourth place finish in the Slalom cost them the RMISA regular season title in the event. New Mexico had a 10 point lead over Colorado coming into today s race, but the Buffs were able to take the title with a strong showing. The men s Alpine team also struggled, finishing in eighth place in the Slalom race. The Lobo s top finisher was sophomore Gottfried Schwarzmueller who placed 2 in the race. Freshmen Dustin Simons and Christian Jensen finished 3 and 34th, respectively. In the women s giant slalom, junior Caroline Schicht s time of 2:07.22 was less than two seconds off the winning time 2:05.7 set by Denver s Sophie Ormond. Junior Jennifer Delich finished seventh in the race while sophomore Helena Woodrow placed 17th for the Lobos. The Men s Alpine team got a good run out of freshman Christian Jensen, who finished ninth, but the Lobos still struggled to a sixth place finish. Freshmen Dustin Simons and Alexander Freberg were the other two Lobos to score points, finishing 24th and 3, repectively. Vika finished in 26:11.9 and the win gave him the 2003 Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association regular season title in the men s Freestyle event. Sophomore Lars Krogsveen placed a career-high third in the race with a time of , just.32 seconds behind second place Tobias Schwoerer of Alaska-Anchorage. Junior Jacob Zehnder placed 1 to round out the Lobo scoring. Junior Johan Rydquist, who ranks seventh in the RMISA Freestyle, did not ski for the Lobos today. The women s Nordic team also placed second overall in the 5K Freestyle race. The Lobos were led by sophomore Martina Stursova who place second in the race. Her time of 15:16.1 was 20.4 seconds behind Utah s Katrin Smigun s winning time of 14:55.7. Senior Kristina Strandberg placed, while junior BrookeGosling tied her season-high by placing 18th. Junior Jenny Wissting, who is ranked second in the RMISA Freestyle, did not compete for the Lobos. The Lobos got another strong performance from Strandberg as the three-time All-American finished third in the 10K Classic race. The Lobos were again without Wissting, who did not ski because she was sick. Stursova helped to pick up some of the slack with a ninth place finish while Gosling placed 3. The men s Nordic team raced without two of their top skiers, including Rydquist, who is no longer with the team, and freshman Ski Racing Magazine s Vika, who was out with an illnesses. Krogsveen led UNM with a 14th place finish. Top Zehnder 10 Rankings placed 19th and sophomore Graham Bremner placed 27th, giving New Mexico a fifth place finish in the event. Its members include the University of Alaska-Anchorage, University of Colorado, University of Denver, Montana State University, University of New Mexico, University of Nevada-Reno, University of Utah, Western State College, and Whitman College. The RMISA is nationally known as the toughest conference for competitive skiing in all of collegiate skiing. Last season the members of the RMISA placed from first to 14th in the NCAA Championships, including the University of Denver s 16th overall national title. This season the RMISA will sponsor four events that include both alpine and Nordic competition. These events will be held at Montana State, Denver, UNM and UNR. The western regionals will be held at the University of Alaska- Anchorage, along with the NCAA Championships. 9 George Brooks Head Ski Coach 3 Season New Mexico 70 George Brooks is heading into his 3 year at the helm of the New Mexico skiing program, a program which has flourished under his direction. Brooks has been the only head coach in the 33-year history of the New Mexico program. Initially a club sport prior to 1970, the UNM skiing program has been molded into a consistently competitive and nationallyranked program. In the 33 years that Brooks has coached at New Mexico, his teams have placed in the top-10 at the NCAA Championships 19 times. The ski team finished second overall in the NCAA s in 1992, which is the highest finish for any Lobo athletic team in history. Brooks earned his bachelors degree in Political Science/History in 1970 and went on to earn his masters in Sports Physiology at UNM. Brooks is married to Debbie Dixon of Albuquerque. The couple has three children: Andrew (22), Casey (19) and Cristi (17). Brooks has coached more than 60 athletes to All-American status on over 100 different occasions. He has also coached over 100 skiers to Academic All-Ameri can honors and All-Conference awards. Seven Alpine team championships (women's Slalom in 1979, 1996 and 2002, women's Giant Slalom in 1977 and men's slalom in 1996 and 1997, and men s Giant Slalom in 1998), Four Nordic team champions, five Nordic individual champi ons and two Alpine Slalom champions at the NCAA Champi onships. Fredrik Landstedt Nordic Team Coach 6th Season New Mexico 91 Fredrik Landstedt is in his fifth season as the Nordic coach with the Lobos. Last season, Landstedt coached the Nordic women s team to a third place finish at the NCAA Championsips. He also guided three Lobos to All-American Honors. During his short time at UNM he has coached nine Lobos to eleven All-American awards. Prior to coming to UNM, Landstedt coached at the University of Colorado for three years including one National Championship title. Before moving to Colorado he coached the West Valley High School ski team in Fairbanks, Alaska to 2 state team titles. Landstedt also served as an assistant coach in New Mexico before heading to Alaska. Originally from Solleftea, Sweden, Landstedt graduated from the University of New Mexico with a Bachelor s degree in Economics in 1991 and an associate degree in Accounting/Bookkeeping in Landstedt is currently working on his Master s degree in Business as well as coordinating a New Mexico Nordic race series and New Mexico State Championships to help raise interest in Nordic skiing in New Mexico. Currently, Landstedt is serving as the President of the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association. Landstedt and his wife, Brenda, have three sons, Gabriel (6), Adrian (4), and Andreas (6 months). Furthermore the First State Bank Corporate Cup exposes people in the business community to our Lobo Ski Team athletes and coaches. The First State Bank Corporate Ski Cup is a series of six ski races held at the finest ski resorts in New Mexico. It is designed to be a healthy and fun activity for skiers of all levels and ages. Ski areas, participating individuals and sponsors continue to develop strong ties among themselves due to their involvement with the First State Bank Corporate Cup. It is still the largest and most prominent Ski event in New Mexico.
