4 2007 UMASS 2006 UMASS SKIING SOCCER Men s Season Preview Senior Rush Hawkins and junior Jason Small will be looking to lead the Minutemen to their fourth consecutive ECSC Championship. Last year, the dynamic duo finished one-two on the podium five times, including the giant slalom at the ECSC Championships. The UMass men tied with Plymouth State for the overall ECSC title as they scored first in the giant slalom, and second in the slalom. They went on to post a solid showing at the USCSA National Championships, with Rush Hawkins finishing seventh overall individually, and the team finishing fifth overall. Hawkins will be looking to regain his National Championship form after successful post-season knee surgery. In 2005, Hawkins became the first American in 10 years to sweep both the slalom and giant slalom at the USCSA Championships. Small will be challenging him all year though, as he will be looking to improve on his stellar sophomore campaign. Small earned his first slalom wins, including a dominating performance at Plymouth State where he took first by nearly three seconds. Returning juniors James Green and Jon Sussman and sophomores Alex Zahoruiko and Paul Lewenberg will be looking to help keep the Minutemen on top. As a freshman, Zahoruiko was the youngest member on the UMass team at the 2006 USCSA Nationals, yet he managed to post an impressive 19 th place combined finish, good for second on the team. He will be looking to improve on his career best 12 th place finish, which came last year in the slalom at the Colby-Sawyer Carnival. The Minutemen also have five freshmen joining the team. Among them are Andrew Hawes, Ian Hohmeister, Travis Hopkins, Adam Pogorzelski, and Jason Small s younger brother, Matthew Small. Matthew and Jason are on different ends of the spectrum as far as personality. Jason is the outgoing co-captain; Matt is a little more quiet and reserved. But each one likes to win, so it will be an interesting year. The Small brothers, Rush and Eliza Hawkins, and freshman twins Andrew and Ashley Hawes give the UMass ski teams a total of three pairs of siblings Under the guidance of new head coach Skip Fox, the Minutemen are poised to have another excellent season. 5 2007 UMASS SKIING Women s Season Preview The youth movement is in full swing for the Minutewomen. USCSA National Champion junior Eliza Hawkins and sophomore Amanda Lea are the only two returning skiers on the women s team after Shay Collins, Caitlin Doughty, Erica Mains, Jen Moreau, and Lisbet Rauh all graduated. The highlight of last season was Eliza Hawkins individual combined USCSA National Championship victory. Hawkins became not only the second UMass skier to win the national title in the last two years, but also the second member of the Hawkins family to complete the feat. Her brother, senior UMass men s skier Rush Hawkins, claimed the overall title in Eliza s win also qualified her to compete directly against the very best in the nation in the U.S. National Championships, which featured the very best skiers in the country, including recent Olympians. Coming into this season, she will be looking to improve upon her stellar 2006 campaign, while taking an increased leadership role as a co-captain on a very young Minutewomen team. With no seniors and Hawkins being the only junior, the rest of the team will be composed of returning sophomore co-captain Amanda Lea, two sophomore transfers, and four freshmen. Last year, Lea was one of the team s most consistent finishers and competed in the ECSC Championships and the USCSA Championships. Although they are sophomores, this will be the first year of collegiate ski racing for incoming transfers Maris Owczarski and Emily Zimmerman. They are not inexperienced though, as both were successful skiers in high school. Ashley Hawes not only adds the second brother-sister duo to UMass skiing, along with her twin brother Andrew on the men s team, but could be one of the top performers for the Minutewomen this season. Lauren Levey also brings an impressive resume to the team, as she was a consistent top five finisher in the Wisconsin State Championships in high school. Freshmen Emily Shilletto and Katie Weissman will also look to contribute, as both had successful high school careers. With Eliza Hawkins looking to improve upon a championship season, and new head coach Skip Fox bringing the newcomers up to speed, the Minutewomen will be looking to have another successful season.
