1 The Flakey Huntsville Ski Club Newsletter July 2016 President s Message, Jodi Stephens WELCOME TO THE HUNTS- VILLE SKI CLUB monthly newsletter, The Flakey. Summer has officially arrived! And the temperatures are reaffirming that. There is a lot planned for the next few months, so be sure to read The Flakey in detail so you don t miss any of the activities. How do you like the new look of The Flakey? We re trying a new format (or recycling an old one). Let us know what you think. WHAT S HAPPENING THIS MONTH? IT S JULY! YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS? SKI TRIPS OPEN! Our June meeting kicked off the sign up period for all of our ski trips. Be sure to take advantage of early sign up fees, and get your room arrangements secured now. All of our Trip Leaders are working hard to accommodate you. Be on the lookout from your Trip Leader for good deals on air fare. If you missed the June meeting (the weather was bad that evening), be sure to attend July s meeting and hear all about these fantastic trips! Have you considered becoming a Trip Leader for next year? Contact your current Trip Leader to get more details. Many of the trips are worked through a provider that allows online signup and have already searched out condos, and provide lift tickets. SUMMER IS HERE! The official Friday Night Cookouts began with Mary Lou and Clyde Lewis. I hear it was a great time, and I was sorry I wasn t able to attend. There s still time to sign-up to host. Be part of the fun and consider hosting a cookout! If you haven t signed up, please contact our Social Directors, Freda Smith and Cathy Boothe. WHAT S HAPPENING?: The next event is on July 16, the Canoe/Kayak/Camp trip with Bob Breeden. This will be followed by the hike into Cathedral Caverns on July 30 lead by Steve Austin. Be sure to read more about these later in The Flakey. George Cass is coordinating the Bowling Tournament, August 7, so get your teams together now! I plan on participating in all 3, and hope to see everyone there! CRESCENT SKI COUNCIL: The Fall Meeting of the Crescent Ski Council has been announced for October 21-23, at the Knoxville Marriott. Consider attending this great fun get-together. Those who attend are some of the skiers who will be on the December Steamboat Springs trip and the Beaver Creek trip in January. THERE IS SO MUCH MORE: This is just the tip of all of what is in The Flakey. Read everything so we can focus on more fun during the meetings! YOU ARE WELCOME TO BE OUR GUEST: We meet each month on the third Wednesday at Huntsville Area Association of Realtors (HAAR) on the corner of Holmes Ave and Monroe St. at 7:00 8:30 pm. From the Ski Trip Director, Gene Hartsfield Sign-ups for the five great HSC and two CSC 2016 ski trips started last month. Several people have already signed for trips. All the trips have more slots open. Now is the time to sign-up to reserve your slot on your favorite trip(s) before it is full or cancelled because it does not have enough to meet the minimum requirement. This year all trips require you to sign-up on-line except the Telluride trip (see Janet Emery for this trip). Let the trip leader or me know if you have problems with the on line signup or other questions. Remember most trips will go up in price after July 31, so sign-up soon. Review the information that follows on each of the trips and choose your favorite trip(s).

2 Board Member Spotlight Bob Breeden I joined Huntsville Ski Club (HSC) around 1995 responding to an invitation by Renata Limmer. Renata s husband, Ralph Limmer (deceased) and I worked together in the Patriot Project Office, Redstone Arsenal and traveled together when we were on a NATO assignment in Munich, GE. It was that experience with Ralph that later led me to a job in Heidelberg, GE, working for the Department of the Army (DA) from While there I took advantage of a MWR ski week held in Berchtesgaden of Sound of Music fame. I had tried skiing once before with my family at the lesser known Feldberg ski area and failed miserably, enough so, that I decided to never ski again without lessons. The full week offered by MWR was the perfect beginning for me since I had not started in my youth, but at age 45. At the end of the week the school gave out trophies for several competitions between the classes. I won a silver medal for slalom and beat my 14 year old son s time in the process. Before leaving GE, I skied the awesome Zugspitze twice and other ski areas in Switzerland. It felt like the perfect sport for me and I have been enjoying skiing ever since. I ve served in three different positions at HSC. First, our friend Jim Will convinced me to volunteer to be Local Trips Director (now Special Events). After I served in that position, I was promoted (it seemed) to Vice President and served under Roger Chassay. After a couple of years concentrating on running trips, I was then elected to President with Roger serving as Vice President. I could not have been President without Roger s aid. As I said earlier, I worked for DA as a civilian for 29 years in Texas, Pennsylvania and Alabama, doing computer programming, mathematical modeling and cost estimating. After retiring from the Federal Service in 1995, I worked as a DA contractor doing more of the same. My wife, Debbie, and I both retired in May 2013 and reside at Tims Ford Lake and never plan to leave. I currently stay active doing what I love; spending time with my family, fishing, hunting, boating and riding my Yamaha. My HSC friends and the fun, year-round, activities give me something to look forward to when I get up in the morning. I try to keep in decent physical shape so I can continue to ski until I drop. But, at times it seems to be a losing battle. Yet, after back surgery, shoulder separation, two hip replacements and other minor physical ailments, I m still planning on skiing again next year. Ski club friends are the best. I could not have any better or loyal friends. Thank you all for being there when I need you.
