1 The Flakey Huntsville Ski Club Newsletter December 2018 President s Message, Jodi Stephens WELCOME TO THE HUNTS- VILLE SKI CLUB: This is the end of 2018! I can't believe how fast this year has passed. First I want to wish a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday to everyone. May the coming year bring good things to you and your family. Several of us attended the Crescent Ski Council Fall Meeting which was held in Gatlinburg October 27 & 28. Bob Breeden (Ski Trips Director), Gene Hartsfield (& Vonette) and I attended the meetings. Pat Brewer and Deana Braden and the Troups were there also. CSC encourages all members of all clubs to follow Crescent Ski Council and the National Ski Federation online and Facebook. These two organizations provide a wealth of information about skiing, ski resorts, and trips from other clubs. These two organizations allow us to post our Club trips which other clubs participate in. For quick reference, here is the link for each: --National Ski Federation: Facebook: --Crescent Ski Council: Facebook: --The Crescent Ski Council sponsors Racing each year. This is the link to that information: WHAT'S HAPPENING NEXT! FYI: Winter Park ski trip is full. If you are planning on skiing this season. SIGN UP QUICKLY! A recap of places and locations: December 1-8: Springs, Colorado January 12-19: CSC Crested Butte, Colorado January 26-Feb 2: Breckenridge, Colorado February 2-9: Winter Park, Colorado--CLOSED March 9-16: Big Sky, Montana BIRTHDAY CLUB! We want to wish our members who are celebrating birthdays this month. We are so glad you are a member and wish you a great day of celebration with family and friends. YOU ARE WELCOME TO BE OUR GUEST! We meet each month on the third Wednesday at the Athletic Club Alabama, 3250 Leeman Ferry Road. Social begins at 7 (or earlier if you like) with meeting beginning at 7:30. Have a Wonderful HSC Day! Jodi Stephens - HSC President REMINDER: If you are interested in another Club's ski trip, and that Club belongs to Crescent Ski Council, most clubs have a Reciprocal Membership for $1. OUR NEXT MEETING: We do not have a meeting in December. I hope all of you will attend our great Christmas Party on December 15 at UAH. This is a great time to get dressed up and celebrate the Holidays with your fellow Ski Friends.
2 From the Vice President - Roger Chassay Reasons to Wear a Helmet While Skiing We ve all been cautioned to wear a helmet while skateboarding or riding a bicycle or motorcycle, but the importance of wearing a helmet on the ski slopes is not well-advertised. Nonetheless, skiing is a high-velocity activity that carries just as much risk of a serious head injury as any of the aforementioned activities. The Statistics In September 2016, the National Ski Areas Association reported that 80% of skiers and snowboarders wore protective gear on their heads during the ski season, setting a record for helmet usage at ski locations across the U.S. This represents an increase over the 78% who reported wearing helmets the year before, and is a dramatic jump from the ski season, when only 25% of winter sports enthusiasts admitted to using head protection. It s trend that appears to be saving more lives, as a New York Times report confirmed that wearing a helmet while skiing has reduced the risk of fractured skulls, face and head lacerations, and other head trauma by as much as 50%. Four Reasons Why You Should Wear a Helmet There are several advantages to wearing a ski helmet, and arguably no disadvantages. Gone are the bulky, uncomfortable, and unsteady models of 10 years ago- modern helmets are both highly comfortable and ultra-functional, helping you stay both warm and protected when you're tackling those big runs. 1. Increased Safety Accidents can happen to anyone, even veteran skiers. While helmets are not a 100% guarantee against head injuries, if you do strike your head the helmet will absorb the shock of the impact and reduce the trauma to your head. While you may still be injured, the severity is likely to be a lot less. 2. Warmth Ski slopes can be bitterly cold, and helmets protect your ears from frostbite while shielding your head from strong winds. You will also be able to ski for longer periods of time, as the helmet will keep your head warm and help maintain your body temperature. 3. Improved Visibility When you ski, powdery snow can spray up into your eyes and affect your vision. On sunny days, those perfectly white slopes also reflect the sun s glare with a painful intensity. Helmets combined with goggles will keep the snow and sun out of your eyes so that your vision remains clear at all times. 4. Setting an Example that Saves Lives Although the benefits of wearing a helmet on the slopes are obvious, many people still balk at wearing them. This is why many ski resorts do not make their use mandatory. When you sport your favorite helmet, you are setting an example that could later save a life.
3 Page 2 Staying Safe on the Slopes There are other things you can do to stay safe while skiing. They include: Staying alert at all times Obeying all warnings, both verbal and posted Using the proper devices to keep ski equipment in place Learning how to properly use the ski lifts Look uphill and yield when starting downhill or merging Choosing a Ski Helmet When selecting a ski helmet, the most important consideration is the fit. If it is too big or too small it may not offer adequate protection in the event of an accident. Ensure that it covers your entire forehead and fits comfortably when you wear goggles or, better yet, choose a helmet that has its own integrated goggles. Once you find a model that you like, confirm that it adheres to a recognized safety standard, such as Snell, the American Society of Testing and Materials, or the Common European Norm. Wearing a helmet while skiing or snowboarding is a smart decision because it can reduce the risk and severity of a head injury, but caution is still necessary whenever you re on the slopes. Helmets are tough, but they are not pieces of armor and they should not encourage risky behavior. Have fun, but stay alert and keep the Responsibility Code in mind at all times. 4 From the Ski Trip Director.. Bob Breeden Ski Trips Input to December 2018 Flakey: Ski season is already underway. The Steamboat Springs trip is the first week of December. Gene Hartsfield and Gary Peterson are already skiing some great runs, anticipating a fantastic week there with CSC s 35 th consecutive annual training camp. With El Nino, 2019 promises to be an excellent skiing year at all our resort locations. Check out the ski trip flyers in this newsletter and sign up ASAP. The Winter Park trip is full but is still taking names for a waitlist. Breckenridge has one unfilled MASTER bedroom and one unfilled 2-bedroom suite remaining. Big Sky has two Stillwater, 2 bedroom condos. Group air seats for both trips have all been taken. If you are interested in either of these two trips, call the trip leader to work out the details. The CSC trip to Crested Butte is still open but not for long. Remember, 2019 CSC s 50 th Anniversary and CSC is going to go the extra mile to make their trips and conventions the best ever. Get ready to party. At the CSC Fall Conference in Gatlinburg, Sun Peaks, BC, Canada was selected for its January 2020 ski week. In addition, Grenada, Spain was selected for an adventure/ski trip in March More details will be provided in the spring after the Myrtle Beach Spring Convention. Start planning now to attend this fun filled trip to Myrtle Beach. All our club members are welcome to attend. IMPORTANT! Trip planning for the 2020 ski season has already begun. HSC 2020 trips will be decided earlier for the HSC 2020 ski trips to take advantage of this year s pricing. If you would like to participate on the Ski Trips Committee, or lead a ski trip in 2020, please contact me ASAP so you can influence our trip selection. Thanks, HSC Ski Trips Director Bob Breeden (256) bob.breeden1008@yahoo.com Also, several CSC Clubs have some great trips planned for the coming season. Be sure to check them out on the CSC website or on Facebook. Check out CSCs President s message on our website.

7 Publicity Festival of Trees This year HSC has been invited again to participate in the Downtown Huntsville Library s annual Festival of Trees. The Festival of Trees is a month-long celebration of decorated trees by community organizations that are provided a special place in the library. This provides us the opportunity to spread awareness to the hundreds of patrons every day. Visitors and staff look forward to the beautiful display of trees each year. The Library encourages organizations to provide informational materials about their activities as part of the tree s decoration. Our club is has been awarded location number 18 on the second floor of the library. This year our tree will have a snowman theme, decorated to resemble a snowman with snow/ ski related ornaments. We will set up and decorate our tree on Monday evening, December 3 at 7:00pm. A team of artistic spirits and treedecorating enthusiasts are needed to help decorate our creation. The Festival of Trees will run through December and all trees will be removed by January 3. This is an effort to extend the ski club s publicity and information on our activities and ski trips will be on display. To volunteer, donate an ornament or for more information, contact Dave Taylor (daveannt@att.net). The more who become involved, the merrier tis the season to be merry!!!
