WELCOME Message from the President Every four years, Australia s most elite winter athletes get their chance to shine in the limelight as winter sport takes centre stage. The stage in 2018 will be PyeongChang, and the plot to our Australian team s story is a captivating one. Expertly led by co-captains Mitchell Gourley and Joany Badenhorst and Chef de Mission Nick Dean, the 2018 Australian Paralympic Team is aiming to deliver a gold medal at a Paralympic Winter Games for the first time since Representing Australia in two sports, Para-alpine skiing and Para-snowboard, our athletes are excited to put the years of gruelling training and preparation to the ultimate test in. With your help, we hope PyeongChang will set a new benchmark for media coverage of Paralympic winter sport in Australia. Building on the foundations laid down in the four years between Vancouver and Sochi, which saw a 304 per cent increase in Paralympic Games coverage, we look forward to collaborating with you to showcase and celebrate the achievements of some of Australia s best athletes. As the leading sports organisation for people with a disability in Australia, the APC is proud of its role as an advocate for diversity and inclusion. However, the contributions of journalists, reporters, producers and media personalities to the huge growth of our movement has been central to our effectiveness. We are reliant on the Australian media to continue the ongoing fight for equality for Australians living with a disability, and those pursuing their goals of achieving international sporting excellence. We also know that the success of Australia s Paralympians has a farreaching impact. On behalf of the APC and the entire Australian Paralympic Team, thank you in advance for your efforts to keep Australian audiences informed during the Paralympic Games. To those of you covering your first Paralympic Games, PyeongChang will be a unique and exciting opportunity to witness the world s best athletes contest gold in the pinnacle event for their sport. The story of each of our athletes will both motivate and challenge you, and I do not doubt that by March 18, you will be a fan for life. For those covering yet another Games, I m sure you know exactly what I mean. Glenn Tasker President Australian Paralympic Committee Message from the Chef de Mission Australia has a long history of success in Paralympic winter sport, having won medals in Para-alpine skiing at every Paralympic Games since Albertville For a nation where climate dictates that summer sports are most revered, we are proud of our successful record and we have earned the respect of the international winter sports community. Our 2018 Australian Paralympic Team has been meticulous in its preparation over the past four years, striving to ensure this impressive medal count continues. And with Australia s first ever medal in Para-snowboard also in sight, we are hopeful that this Games will be one to celebrate. At the same time, we are under no illusion that a Paralympic medal has never been harder to win. The standard of competition is incredible as more and more nations recognise the value and importance of Paralympic success. For the APC, the 2018 campaign has been its most comprehensive to date. Just as our athletes have left no stone unturned in the search for Paralympic glory, the same can be said for the APC and its range of partners who have shared the collective goal of watching Australia succeed against the world s best, and often upstaging more fancied rivals in the process. Within this media guide, you will find information about the services available to you during the Games, athlete and sport profiles, and a brief history of Paralympic winter sport in Australia. I encourage you to use it, along with the APC website ( in your coverage of the Games. To help you deliver the stories of our Team s success to Australians watching, reading and listening at home, we have assembled a strong and experienced media team led by Tim Mannion, the APC s General Manager of Communications. While at the Games, Tim and his staff will be working around the clock to assist with enquiries from members of the media, including those not travelling to PyeongChang. Put simply, it is our job to help you share the best stories from the Games with the largest possible audience, so please get in touch with us. Whether you are joining us in or reporting from home, my hope is we will work together to grow interest in Paralympic winter sport in Australia. For our athletes and sighted guides, PyeongChang is the culmination of many years of hard work, sacrifice and time spent away from family and friends. I am confident their stories will command your attention, and that these Games will mark the strengthening of a partnership to last for many years to come. We are responsible for preparing the Australian Paralympic Team for the Paralympic Games and have done so successfully since Of the 159 countries represented at Rio 2016, Australia placed fifth on the medal tally with 22 gold, 30 silver and 29 bronze medals. We identify potential Paralympians through a range of initiatives in collaboration with NFs, and develop and share expertise and specialist knowledge in the areas of skill acquisition, performance talent, performance services and classification, to optimise the preparation and performance of athletes at the summer and winter Paralympic Games and other major events. Of the 176 athletes who represented Australia at Rio 2016, 54 were identified through the APC s Talent Search and other programs, and were responsible for nearly half of the Australian Paralympic Team s 81-medal haul (46.9 per cent). We believe there are positive physical and social benefits to participation in sport for people with a disability, and we are proud of our broader role as advocates for diversity and inclusion. Key programs of the APC include: The mainstreaming of Paralympic programs integrates sporting opportunities for people with a disability into the mainstream sport environment and standardises Paralympic sport for participants at all levels, including administrators, coaches and officials. Australia s first female Winter Paralympic medallist Jessica Gallagher, with her sighted guide Eric Bickerton, at the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games. Currently, the APC receives government funding for high performance in three Paralympic sports (boccia, goalball and wheelchair rugby) and supports 14 Paralympic high performance programs in partnership with NFs. Classification groups athletes with similar impairments into categories for competition to ensure they compete fairly. The APC is responsible for implementing the IPC Classification Code, which details classification policies and procedures common across Paralympic sports in Australia, and does so through the national classification strategy and by working in partnership with key stakeholders. The APC collaborates with NFs and other identified organisations to embed classification in sport, enabling athletes in Australia to have access to classification at the relevant stage in their sporting pathway. The program includes classifiers in every sport contested by the Australian Paralympic Team at the Paralympic Games. Driving the growth in awareness of Paralympic sport in Australia is the APC s communications strategy. The APC implemented its most successful ever media and broadcast operations during the Rio 2016 cycle, reaching a cumulative audience of million through online, print, radio and television coverage in the three-month period surrounding the Games. Winter Games coverage also reached new levels at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games; there was a 304 per cent increase from Vancouver 2010 and a tenfold increase from Torino As part of the Australian Paralympic History Project, the APC works with an array of dedicated organisations and individuals to capture, manage and preserve the history of the Paralympic movement in Australia in a way that is relevant, accessible and establishes the movement within its broader social context. In addition, sponsorship and fundraising initiatives enable the APC to fund the successful delivery of the Australian Paralympic Team to the Paralympic Games. Page 4 Page 5

01 APC GAMES MEDIA SERVICES Media Etiquette When speaking to, interviewing or socialising with a person with a disability, it is important to keep in mind the following: Always talk directly to them, not their coach or support staff. Do not underestimate their intelligence or ability. Speak in a normal tone of voice and do not use language that is condescending. Use the same gestures to meet or greet them as you would an able-bodied person, even if they have limited use of their hands or wear an artificial limb. They will let you know if a certain action is appropriate. Feel comfortable asking specific questions about their disability, and be relaxed and as open and honest as you can. It is a part of who they are, how they got to where they are, and why they are competing at the pinnacle event for their sport. Do not assume they require assistance. Ask if they need a hand or wait to be asked, and when assisting, ask them how best to do this. If they refer to their impairment in a way which could be construed negatively, do not use similar language when talking to or about them. Use everyday words and phrases. For instance, do not be embarrassed to tell a person with a vision impairment that you ll see them later. Wheelchair Users Place yourself at eye level by sitting next to them. Consider the wheelchair as part of their personal space. Keep an appropriate distance and never use it as something to lean on. Do not patronise them by patting them on the head or shoulders. Feel comfortable in offering to help them navigate obstacles such as doors, but do not push their wheelchair unless they have requested your help. People with a Vision Impairment Announce your entrance and departure from a room. Give verbal descriptions of visual events. Inform them of obstacles present which may not be detected by their cane. If you offer to guide them, allow them to take your arm, and if you guide them to a seat, place their hand on the back or arm of the chair. Never acknowledge a guide dog while it is harnessed. It has an important job to do and distracting it may put its owner in harm s way. People with an Intellectual Disability Use simple language. Allow them more time to process the conversation. Do not interrupt, correct or speak for them. If you are unable to successfully communicate your message verbally, you may need to use gestures or pictures. People with a Communication Difficulty Be aware of and respect alternative communication requirements such as electronic devices or Braille. Do not interrupt, correct or speak for them. If you are unable to communicate your message verbally, demonstrate what you mean. If this is unsuccessful, ask their permission to speak to their assistant, parent or carer. Retired Paralympian Cameron Rahles-Rahbula at a 2017 Australian Para-alpine skiing team training camp Paralympics, not Olympics or Para-Olympics The Paralympic Games are distinct from the Olympic Games, and the competitors at both events need to be acknowledged in their own right. It is inappropriate to call a Paralympian an Olympian, as it is to call an Olympian a Paralympian. There is a tendency among some reporters to refer to the Paralympic Games as the Para-Olympic Games. There is no such thing as the Para- Olympic Games. When compiling your stories, please keep in mind the following: Athletes with a disability who compete at the Paralympic Games are the best at what they do, and should be afforded the same recognition as any able-bodied athlete who competes at the highest level. Always identify the athlete first and then their disability; however, do not feel obliged to mention their disability at all. Avoid sensationalising the accomplishments of athletes with a disability as extraordinary or superhuman, or in another way which suggests expectations were low. Avoid using negative, emotional words and phrases like tragic, affected, suffers or wheelchair-bound. Portray the athlete as they are in their everyday life. For instance, as well as being an athlete, they may also be a parent, civil engineer, doctor, business manager or reporter. Page 10 Page 11

02 GAMES HISTORY AND FACTS 02 GAMES HISTORY AND FACTS History of the Paralympic Winter Games Before World War II, most people with a spinal cord injury died within months or a couple of years due to infection and other complications. However, after the war, developments in antibiotics, treatment and rehabilitation ensured spinal cord injuries were survivable. In 1939, German neurosurgeon Sir Ludwig Guttman fled Nazi Germany for England, founding the National Spinal Injuries Unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Aylesbury in Introducing sport as a method of rehabilitation for injured servicemen and women, he organised the inaugural Stoke Mandeville Wheelchair Games, the forerunner to the Paralympic Games, to coincide with the 1948 Olympic Games in London, England. That same year, the first events for skiers with a disability were offered, with 17 athletes contesting the earliest known Winter Championships for the Disabled in Bad Gastein (formerly Badgastein), Austria. In 1976, 16 years after the first Paralympic Games were staged, the city of Örnsköldsvik, Sweden hosted the first Paralympic Winter Games. 198 athletes from 16 countries competed across two sports, with West Germany and Switzerland topping the gold medal tally with 10 medals apiece. Fast-forward another 16 years to Albertville, France where, for the first time, the Paralympic Winter Games were staged in the same city as the Olympic Winter Games. Since then, they have shared the same location, facilities and infrastructure, with the Paralympics commencing approximately two weeks after the Olympics close. 9 02 GAMES HISTORY AND FACTS Australia at the Paralympic Winter Games Australia has participated at every Paralympic Winter Games since the first in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden in 1976, and has competed in official competition since the second in Geilo, Norway in To date, 35 athletes and five sighted guides have represented Australia at the Paralympic Winter Games. Together, they have won 30 medals including 11 gold. Collecting the first of these medals at Albertville 1992, where Michael Milton became the first Australian to win gold at the Paralympic or Olympic Winter Games, the Australian Paralympic Team enjoyed its most successful ever Winter Games two years later in Lillehammer, Norway. With four of the Team s six athletes achieving a podium finish, Australia won three gold, two silver and four bronze medals to finish ninth on the gold medal tally. He did not compete as there were no events for his classification. 2 Peter Rickards sighted guide was Eldar Hagen from Norway. He was not a member of the Australian Team. Melissa Perrine with sighted guide Christian Geiger In 2002, Michael rewrote history for the second time, as the first LW2 competitor to achieve a clean sweep of gold medals across the four Para-alpine skiing disciplines; at the time, these were downhill, slalom, giant slalom and super-g. Although a new, more competitive class structure was introduced in 2006, the Australian Paralympic Team continued to record strong results. In 2010, Jessica Gallagher won a bronze medal in the Women s Slalom Visually Impaired to become Australia s first female athlete to win a medal at the Paralympic Winter Games, and at just 14, Ben Tudhope made history as Australia s youngest ever Winter Paralympian and the youngest of all athletes competing at Sochi Ben will represent Australia again in PyeongChang. PyeongChang 2018 The largest ever Paralympic Winter Games will be held on 9-18 March 2018 in PyeongChang,. Up to 670 athletes from 45 countries are expected to compete, up 34 per cent from Sochi 2014 and 44 per cent in female representation. 80 medal events will be contested across the six sports of Para-alpine skiing, Parabiathlon, Para-cross country skiing, Para-ice hockey, Para-snowboard and wheelchair curling. In Sochi, Russia topped the medal tally with 30 gold, 28 silver and 22 bronze medals. However, after the entire Russian Paralympic Team was banned from competition by the IPC for state-sponsored doping violations in August 2016, athletes from Russia are to compete under a neutral flag in PyeongChang. In January 2018, the IPC announced that it is maintaining the suspension of the Russian Paralympic Committee (RPC). However, in recognition of the progress made by the RPC in improving its anti-doping activities, it will allow eligible Russian Para-athletes who meet strict conditions to compete in five sports under the name Neutral Paralympic Athlete (NPA) at the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games. 10 03 PARALYMPIC WINTER SPORT 03 PARALYMPIC WINTER SPORT What is Paralympic Sport? Paralympic sport exists so that people with a disability have equal opportunities to compete and be successful in sport. The Paralympic Games are the pinnacle of sporting achievement for athletes with a disability. Athletes who compete at the Paralympic Games have a physical, vision and/or intellectual impairment. However, athletes with an intellectual impairment are not currently eligible for competition at the Winter Games. Classification The classification system for Paralympic sport groups athletes with similar impairments into categories for competition, comparable to other practices used in sport to create fairness, like grouping athletes by age, gender or weight. As no two impairments are the same, there are a range of athletes in each class. Athlete Evaluation For athletes eligible for classification, the international federation for each sport appoints classifiers to a classification panel. The classification panel: Determines whether the athlete has an eligible impairment for their chosen sport. Athletes are required to provide significant medical evidence to prove permanent and eligible impairment; Determines whether the athlete meets the minimum impairment criteria for their chosen sport, such as a specified level of visual acuity or visual field for athletes with a vision impairment; and Allocates the athlete a sport class for competition. The athlete is also allocated a sport class status which details if and when they need to attend future evaluation. Whether an athlete needs to attend future evaluation depends on their age, impairment type and medical changes or intervention, as well as changes to classification rules. Para-alpine skiing Eleven Australian athletes, including three sighted guides, will compete in Para-alpine skiing at PyeongChang History Two Para-alpine skiing events, slalom and giant slalom, were contested at the inaugural Paralympic Winter Games in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden in Downhill was introduced to the program in 1984 and followed by super-g in Mono-skiers became eligible for Paralympic competition at Nagano Before these Games, Para-alpine skiing events were only contested by athletes in standing classes, such as those with a vision impairment or limb loss. A new competition class structure was introduced at Torino 2006, which combined the 14 existing classes into three Standing, Sitting and Vision Impaired. Using a factoring system based on the times skied by the best performers in each of the 14 classes, raw scores are adjusted to accurately compare athletes with different impairments and ensure they compete fairly. The five events to be contested in PyeongChang are downhill, slalom, giant slalom, super-g and super combined. Events Downhill and super-g are the speed events of the Para-alpine skiing program. Skiers start higher on the mountain and the gates are well-spaced, meaning speeds often exceed 100 kilometres per hour. Downhill is the longest and fastest event on the program. Simon Patmore Page 17

03 PARALYMPIC WINTER SPORT In the technical events, slalom and giant slalom, the course is shorter and the gates are closer together, to emphasise the skiers turning skills. Slalom is the shortest course Downhill Slalom Giant Slalom Super-G Super Combined on the program and generally very steep; its gates are closest together for the fastest turns. Skiers are timed as they race down a long, steep course that can include turns and jumps. They must pass through a low number of gates that are used as checkpoints, with the penalty for missing a gate being disqualification. One run determines the finishing order, meaning the skier who completes the course fastest, wins. The shortest course on the Para-alpine skiing program, female skiers negotiate anywhere between 40 and 60 gates and male skiers, 55 to 75. The penalty for missing a gate is disqualification. Each skier completes two runs on the same day on different courses and their times are added together to determine the finishing order. Their ranking in the first run determines their starting order in the second run, with the fastest skiing last. A longer course with fewer turns than the slalom, the number of gates is determined by the vertical drop and the penalty for missing a gate is disqualification. Each skier completes two runs on the same day on different courses, and their times are added together to determine the finishing order. Their ranking in the first run determines their starting order in the second run, with the fastest skiing last. A longer course than the slalom and giant slalom, the number of gates is determined by the vertical drop, with a minimum of 30 directional changes for women and 35 for men. Gates are set at least 25 metres apart, and the penalty for missing a gate is disqualification. One run determines the finishing order, meaning the skier who completes the course fastest, wins. In PyeongChang, a super-combined run in the morning will be followed by a slalom run in the afternoon. The skier with the fastest combined time wins. The rules of the International Ski Federation are used with only a few modifications. These are: Skiers in the sitting class use a mono-ski. Commonly known as a tub or bucket, a moulded seat, seat belt and suspension system sit on a single ski, with outrigger poles used in place of ski poles to help with balance. Skiers with a physical impairment not requiring a mono-ski may use the same equipment as able-bodied skiers. However, they may also use prostheses, outrigger poles or other orthopaedic aids. Eligible disability types for Para-alpine skiing Physical Impairment Limb deficiency Impaired muscle power Description Skiers with a vision impairment use the same equipment as able-bodied skiers, but navigate the course with the help of a sighted guide, who issues voice commands and information about changes in pitch, rhythm and snow conditions. Classification Athletes who compete in Para-alpine skiing have a physical and/or vision impairment. Athletes who compete in Para-alpine skiing events may be classified as standing, sitting or visually impaired. The list below includes examples of the impairments in each class, current at the date of publication. It is intended as a guide only and is not exhaustive. Partial or total absence of bones or joints due to congenital deficiency, or amputation resulting from illness or trauma Impaired muscle power resulting from health conditions including Erb s palsy, muscular dystrophy, sacral agenesis, spina bifida, spinal cord injury, spinal tumour and transverse myelitis Ataxia, athetosis and hypertonia Impaired passive range of movement Leg length difference Vision Impairment Neurological conditions resulting in or from an acquired brain injury, cerebral palsy, hereditary spastic paraparesis or multiple sclerosis Restricted range of movement in one or more joints resulting from health conditions including arthrogryposis, talipes and joint fusions Significant difference in leg length due to congenital deficiency or trauma Impairment of the eye structure, optical nerves or pathways, or visual cortex, resulting in a restriction or loss of vision in both eyes. This may be caused by health conditions including albinism, macular or cone rod dystrophy, retinitis pigmentosa and Stargardt disease. Tori Pendergast Page 18 Page 19

03 PARALYMPIC WINTER SPORT Standing LW1 Skiers with a significant impairment affecting both legs, such as double above-knee limb loss. They use one or two skis and two poles. LW2 Skiers with a significant impairment affecting one leg. They use one ski and two poles. LW3 Skiers with a moderate impairment affecting both legs, such as double below-knee limb loss. They use two skis and two poles. LW4 Skiers with a moderate impairment affecting one leg. They use two skis and two poles. LW5/7 Skiers with an impairment affecting both arms, such as muscle weakness or spasticity. They ski without poles. LW6/8 Skiers with an impairment affecting one arm. They use two skis and one pole. LW9 Skiers with an impairment affecting one arm and one leg, such as left side hemiplegia. They use one or two skis and one or two poles. Sitting LW10 Skiers with an impairment causing minimal or no trunk stability, such as spina bifida. They use a monoski and outrigger poles. LW11 Skiers with good upper trunk stability but limited control in their lower trunk and hips, such as that caused by a lower spinal cord injury. They use a mono-ski and outrigger poles. LW12 Skiers with normal or only slightly impacted trunk function, or a leg impairment. They use a mono-ski and outrigger poles. Skiers in classes LW1-LW4 are often also eligible to compete as LW12 athletes. Patrick Jensen with sighted guide Lara Falk Visually Impaired B1 Skiers who are blind, or have very low visual acuity. They are required to wear eyeshades when they race. B2 Skiers who have low visual acuity (LogMAR 1.50 to 2.60 inclusive) or a visual field that is less than 10 degrees in diameter. B3 Skiers who have low visual acuity (LogMAR 1.40 to 1.0 inclusive) or a visual field that is less than 40 degrees in diameter. Factoring System Para-alpine skiing These functional classifications are combined using a factoring system, creating one results list for each class. Athletes with different impairments are included in one class and compete for one set of medals, meaning times are factored to ensure final placings are based on an athlete s technical ability, not the functional advantages or disadvantages they may have due to their impairment. Factors for each classification are calculated by dividing the fastest time achieved in the most able classification, by the fastest time achieved in each of the other classifications, over several seasons of predetermined events. They are adjusted annually based on results from the year s major competitions. Among these are the Alpine, European and World Cups, North American races, World Championships and Paralympic Games. During competition, an athlete s racing time is multiplied by the factor of their classification to create a scoring time. For events with two runs, the scoring times of both races are tallied. Please note that all times displayed during events at PyeongChang 2018 have already been factored, meaning the skier with the fastest time displayed on the scoreboard will be the event leader. Eligible disability types for Para-snowboard Physical Impairment Limb deficiency Impaired muscle power Ataxia, athetosis and hypertonia Impaired passive range of movement Description Para-snowboard Four Australian athletes will compete in Para-snowboard at PyeongChang History It was announced in 2012 that Parasnowboard would be added to the Paralympic program for the first time at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games as a discipline of Para-alpine skiing. In PyeongChang, athletes will compete in the snowboard cross and banked slalom. Prior to being added to the Paralympic program, Para-snowboard was called adaptive snowboard and was governed by the World Snowboard Federation. It is now governed by the IPC. Events Para-snowboard is contested by male and female athletes with a physical impairment. Sitting and vision impaired skiers are ot currently eligible for Paralympic competition. In the snowboard cross, boarders complete three runs, with their best run determining the finishing order. There is only one rider on the course at a time. The course is man-made and terrain features include bank turns, jumps and rollers. In the banked slalom, boarders complete three runs, with their best run determining the finishing order. The course is usually a medium pitched slope with naturally varying terrain. Partial or total absence of bones or joints due to congenital deficiency, or amputation resulting from illness or trauma Impaired muscle power resulting from health conditions including Erb s palsy, muscular dystrophy, sacral agenesis, spina bifida, spinal cord injury, spinal tumour and transverse myelitis Neurological conditions resulting in or from an acquired brain injury, cerebral palsy, hereditary spastic paraparesis or multiple sclerosis Restricted range of movement in one or more joints resulting from health conditions including arthrogryposis, talipes and joint fusions Leg length difference Significant difference in leg length due to congenital deficiency or trauma Page 20 Page 21

03 PARALYMPIC WINTER SPORT Classification Athletes who compete in Para-snowboard have a physical impairment. There are three classes in Para-snowboard. The list below includes examples of the impairments in each class, current at the date of publication. It is intended as a guide only and is not exhaustive. SB-LL1 Boarders with a significant impairment affecting one leg or a significant combined impairment affecting both legs, such as above-knee limb loss, muscle weakness or spasticity. They may use prostheses or modified equipment. SB-LL2 Boarders with a moderate impairment affecting one or both legs, such as below-knee limb loss. They may use modified equipment. SB-UL Boarders with an impairment affecting one or both arms, such as spinal cord or nerve damage. Para-cross country skiing Among the first sports to be contested at the Winter Paralympics, Para-cross country skiing made its Games debut in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden in Athletes with a physical and/or vision impairment compete in short, middle and long-distance events ranging from 1.1km to 20km, using classic and freestyle techniques. Australia will not be represented in Paracross country skiing in PyeongChang. Para-biathlon First contested at Lillehammer 1994, Parabiathlon is a combination of Para-cross country skiing and air-rifle shooting. Athletes with a physical and/or vision impairment compete in short, middle and long-distance events ranging from 6km to 15km. Between each lap, they stop at a shooting range to hit target plates, with each miss acquiring a time penalty or penalty loop. For Visually Impaired skiers, acoustic signals indicate when they are on target. Australia will not be represented in Parabiathlon in PyeongChang. Para-ice hockey Para-ice hockey made its first appearance at the Paralympic Games as an exhibition event at Örnsköldsvik It was officially added to the Paralympic program at Lillehammer 1994, and has since become a top attraction for spectators. A Para-ice hockey game is fast-paced and highly physical, and played between two teams of 13 players and two goalkeepers. Athletes with a lower body impairment are eligible to compete. The rules of the International Ice Hockey Federation are followed, excepting: Players use two-blade sledges in place of skates; and Players use two sticks, one with a spikeend for pushing and the other with a blade-end for shooting. Australia will not be represented in Para-ice hockey in PyeongChang. Wheelchair curling Wheelchair curling made its Paralympic debut at Torino Athletes with a lower body impairment are eligible to compete; however, each team must include both male and female players. It is governed by and played according to the rules of the World Curling Federation, with the only modification being that sweeping is not permitted. To throw the stone, athletes may use their hands or arms, or a delivery stick. Australia will not be represented in wheelchair curling in PyeongChang. 14 04 THE AUSTRALIAN PARALYMPIC TEAM 04 THE AUSTRALIAN PARALYMPIC TEAM The Australian Paralympic Team Fast Facts Australia will be represented in two of the six sports at PyeongChang These are Para-alpine skiing and Parasnowboard. The APC will send 12 athletes, 3 sighted guides and 20 staff to PyeongChang. Of the 12 athletes, 9 are male and 3 are female. There are 2 male guides and 1 female guide. The average age of the 2018 Australian Paralympic Team is 26 years. The average age of the male athletes is 27 years and the average age of the female athletes is 25 years. - The youngest athlete on the Team is Para-snowboarder Ben Tudhope, who will be 18 years and 86 days when the Games open on March 9. Ben made his Paralympic debut at Sochi 2014 as Australia s youngest ever Winter Paralympian, aged 14 years and 84 days. - The oldest athlete on the Team is Mark Soyer, who will be 39 years and 319 days when the Games open on March 9. Five alpine skiers and two guides will make their Paralympic debut in PyeongChang. They are Patrick Jensen, Jonty O Callaghan, Shaun Pianta, Mark Soyer and Sam Tait, and guides Lara Falk and Jeremy O Sullivan. Two snowboarders Simon Patmore and Sean Pollard will make their winter Paralympic debut. Australia will equal its highest ever representation of female athletes (four) at a Paralympic Winter Games in Four female athletes also represented Australia during Sochi Emily Rahles-Rahbula (née Jansen) became the first Australian female winter Paralympian in Jessica Gallagher became the first Australian female winter Paralympic medallist when she took bronze in the Women s Slalom Visually Impaired on her 24th birthday at Vancouver As of 20 February 2018, four Australian athletes boast top five world rankings. They are Melissa Perrine (slalom #2, giant slalom #3, super-g #5); Mitchell Gourley (giant slalom #3, downhill #8, super combined #3); Joany Badenhorst (snowboard cross #=1, banked slalom #3) and Simon Patmore (banked slalom #5). Simon Patmore is the only member of the Team to have also competed at a Paralympic Summer Games. Simon will become just the sixth Paralympian and first snowboarder in history to represent Australia at a Paralympic Summer and Winter Games. He won a bronze medal in the T46 200m at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Australia has won 30 Paralympic winter medals since the first Paralympic Winter Games in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden in At the Sochi 2014 Games, Australia won two bronze medals to finish 19th on the medal tally. Australia has not won a Paralympic gold medal since Salt Lake City in Australia s most successful Winter Paralympian is Michael Milton with six gold, three silver and two bronze medals from five Paralympic Games. Michael Milton won Australia s first ever gold medal at a Paralympic or Olympic Winter Games in the men s slalom LW2 at Albertville Australians have participated at every Paralympic Winter Games since they began in 1976, but did not compete in the very first Games. APC Hall of Fame inductee Ron Finneran, one of the founders of Disabled Wintersport Australia, attended the first Games, carried the Australian flag at the Opening Ceremony and skied as a forerunner for the alpine events. However, there were no competition or events for athletes with Ron s disability. Tori Pendergast Page 25

04 THE AUSTRALIAN PARALYMPIC TEAM Winter and Summer Paralympians From 1960 to 2018, just six athletes will have represented Australia at a Paralympic Winter and Summer Games. Kyrra Grunnsund Kyrra Grunnsund s Paralympic career spanned more than a decade through the 1980s and early 1990s. He represented Australia in Para-alpine skiing and Paracross country skiing on debut in 1980, and again in Para-alpine skiing at the 1984, 1988 and 1992 Winter Paralympics. Incredibly, he travelled to Albertville, France for the 1992 Paralympic Winter Games, before making his way to Barcelona, Spain just four months later to represent Australia in Para-athletics at the 1992 Summer Paralympics. Anthony Bonaccurso Anthony Bonaccurso began playing wheelchair tennis in 1993, but made his Paralympic debut as a Para-alpine skier at Nagano Returning to wheelchair tennis after the Games, he won a bronze medal in the Men s Doubles at the 2004 Summer Paralympics. Michael Milton Among Australia s most successful ever athletes, Michael Milton made his Paralympic debut in Para-alpine skiing in 1988, as Australia s youngest ever Winter Paralympian. Four years later, he won Australia s first gold medal at a Paralympic or Olympic Winter Games, and went on to win another five gold, three silver and two bronze medals at the 1992, 1994, 2002 and 2006 Winter Paralympics. After retiring from Para-alpine skiing, Michael represented Australia in Para-cycling at the 2008 Paralympic Summer Games. Dominic Monypenny When Para-rowing was added to the Paralympic program for Beijing 2008, Dominic Monypenny was a natural choice for Australian selectors, having already won gold at the 2005 and 2006 World Championships. After placing sixth in the final of the Men s Single Sculls AM1x, he retired from Para-rowing, returning to Paralympic competition two years later to represent Australia in Para-cross country skiing at the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games. Jessica Gallagher Before she became Australia s first female medallist at a Paralympic Winter Games, Jessica Gallagher was a successful Paraathlete. However, just days before she was due to compete at Beijing 2008, she was reclassified as ineligible for Paralympic competition. Making her Paralympic debut two years later in Vancouver, Canada, she won a bronze medal in the Women s Slalom Visually Impaired as a Para-alpine skier, and matched this result in Jessica returned to Para-athletics for the 2012 Summer Paralympics, and in 2016, she again made history as the first Australian to win a medal at a Paralympic or Olympic Winter and Summer Games, taking bronze in Para-cycling. Simon Patmore After winning gold in the Men s T46 100m at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and bronze in the T46 200m at the 2011 World Para-athletics Championships, Simon Patmore competed at the 2012 Paralympic Summer Games in London, where he won a bronze medal in the T46 200m. He transitioned to Para-snowboard in 2014, and after a successful 2017/18 World Cup Series, he will become just the sixth Paralympian and first snowboarder in history to represent Australia at a Summer and Winter Games. Meet the 2018 Australian Paralympic Winter Athletes PARA-ALPINE SKIING Mitchell Gourley Barwon Heads, VIC Born: 2 June 1991 Disciplines: Downhill, slalom, giant slalom, super-g, super combined Classification: LW6/8-2 Disability: Left below-elbow limb deficiency How acquired: Congenital Occupation: Athlete Games experience: Vancouver 2010, Sochi 2014 Sport career highlight: Sharing the podium with Australian teammate Toby Kane at the 2012/13 IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup event in Sestriere, Italy. Experienced campaigner Mitchell Gourley was primed for success at Sochi 2014, following his impressive two gold, three silver and one bronze medal haul during the 2013/14 IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup Series. Although he worked hard to improve on his results from Vancouver 2010, where his best finish was 10th place in the Men s Super-G Standing, Mitchell struck an unbelievable run of bad luck. He recorded a DNF in the slalom, giant slalom and super-g, and placed fifth and seventh in the super combined and downhill, respectively. As his hopes of winning a Paralympic medal in Sochi were dashed, Mitchell shifted his focus to PyeongChang. At the 2017 World Para-alpine skiing World Championships in Tarvisio, Italy, more than 10 years after making his Australian debut, Mitchell left his competition behind in the super combined to be crowned World Champion. Off the back of this incredible result, which earned him national and international recognition, he won gold in the giant slalom at the 2016/17 World Para-alpine skiing World Cup event in Hakuba, Japan and finished just 0.67 seconds from silver in the super-g at the 2016/17 World Cup Finals in PyeongChang. Capping his best season yet on the snow, Mitchell topped the World Cup rankings in the giant slalom to win his first Crystal Globe. As the 2016 and 2017 Ski & Snowboard Australia Para-athlete of the Year and a second-term athlete representative on the World Para-alpine skiing Sport Technical Committee, Mitchell s selection as cocaptain of the 2018 Australian Paralympic Team was a natural choice for the APC. Off the slopes, he studies a Master of Business (Sport Management) at Deakin University in Melbourne, having already completed a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Melbourne in In his spare time, Mitchell enjoys cycling, mountain biking, rock climbing and doing crosswords. Current world rankings as at 20/2/18: Downhill: 8 Slalom: 9 Giant Slalom: 3 Super-G: 10 Super Page 26 Page 27

Together with her sighted guide at the time, Andy Bor, Melissa made her Paralympic debut the following year at Vancouver The duo impressed with fifth place in the downhill, seventh in the super-g and eighth in the slalom, and after winning a slew of medals in the four years after Vancouver, they were among Australia s top medal hopes for Sochi Unfortunately, Melissa and Andy struck an unbelievable run of bad luck at their second Paralympic Games. After a narrow fourth place finish in the downhill on day one, Melissa was in a medal-winning position in the super-g, before losing control and recording a DNF. Page 40 She was disqualified in the super combined for attaching a visor to her race helmet, and a ski came loose in the slalom and giant slalom to bring her Games campaign to a disappointing close. Melissa rediscovered her winning edge at the 2015 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships in Panorama, Canada, where she won an incredible three gold, one silver and one bronze medal across the five Para-alpine skiing disciplines. Although she took an extended break from competition during the 2016/17 season to focus on her studies, Melissa was as impressive as ever on the World Para-alpine skiing World Cup circuit, collecting two gold, five silver and four bronze medals. Five of these were won at the PyeongChang 2018 Test Event. Melissa is Australia s first female athlete to win a World Championships medal in Paraalpine skiing, and with the help of her longtime coach and newly appointed sighted guide, Christian Geiger, she has never been closer to achieving her goal of winning a Paralympic gold medal. However, she says none of her success would be possible were it not for her parents unwavering support. He was blind in a matter of hours, and after a stint in hospital at the Australian Embassy, he was flown to Perth, where he spent three weeks as an inpatient recovering from kidney failure. An avid snowboarder before losing his sight, Shaun first discovered Para-alpine skiing at a Disabled Wintersport Australia expo in Melbourne in After signing up, it was not long before he set himself the goal of becoming a Paralympian. Devastatingly, ahead of what would have been his international debut in November 2014, Shaun broke both his legs in a training run. Unable to walk, it was seven-anda-half months before he returned to the slopes, and three of those were spent in a wheelchair. Together with his sighted guide, Jeremy O Sullivan, Shaun began working towards selection for PyeongChang. The duo gained crucial international experience at the 2017 World Para-alpine skiing Europa Cup event in Veysonnaz, Switzerland, where they posted career-best scores in the men s vision impaired super-g and giant slalom to take silver in both events, before making their way to Tarvisio, Italy for their first ever World Para-alpine skiing World Championships. Outside of training and competition, Shaun enjoys doing ju-jitsu, mountain biking, fishing and watching the AFL. Currently a full-time athlete, he completed a boilermaking and welding apprenticeship after leaving school, and holds a Certificate III in Business. In 2015, he was one of just four Para-alpine skiers to represent Australia at the IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships in Panorama, Canada, and at the 2016/17 World Para-alpine skiing Europa Cup event in Veysonnaz, Switzerland, he took silver in the super-g, finishing less than one second behind France s Frederic Francois. No stranger to injury, in early 2017, Mark had surgery to repair 12 broken ribs and his collarbone, and spent five months out of action. Mark is committed to developing Para-alpine skiing in Australia. He has volunteered as a trainer and guide for Disabled Wintersport Australia since 2005, and in 2016, he was named its inaugural Simon Lo Schiavo Volunteer of the Year. Off the slopes, Mark enjoys mountain biking, kayaking and watching the MotoGP. In 2001, he completed a degree at the Gemmology Institute of Australia, and currently works at a jeweller. In 10 years time, he hopes to have a business of his own. Hailing from Harrismith, South Africa, Joany Badenhorst was involved in a severe tractor accident while playing on her parents farm in A group of labourers were busy clearing firebreaks and, offering her help, Joany caught her pants in the power take-off shaft of the tractor, amputating her left leg below the knee. Before the accident, Joany was already a successful athlete and had won provincial colours in high jump and modern dance, but when she moved to Australia in 2009, it did not take her long to establish herself as a track and field athlete with serious Paralympic potential. After just missing selection for London 2012, Joany was approached by the APC to transfer to Para-snowboard, and in 2014, she was set to make history as Australia s first female athlete to compete in Parasnowboard at the Paralympic Games. Shockingly, just hours before her first race, Joany crashed on a final training run, breaking her patella, dislocating her knee and collapsing her hip. The crash only strengthened her resolve and in 2015, Joany strung together two career-best performances to earn back-toback silver medals at the 2014/15 IPC World Cup events in Aspen, USA and Big White, Canada. At the 2016/17 World Para World Cup Finals, Joany recovered from a crash in the qualifying rounds of the Women s Snowboard Cross SB-LL2 to set up a finals showdown with Paralympic gold medallist Bibian Mentel-Spee. Incredibly, her second place was enough to secure the World Cup Crystal Globe. Joany s excellent form continued into the 2017/18 season. Her dominance was underlined at the IPC World Cup Finals when she secured two Crystal Globes - for the most points won in the banked slalom and for the most points won overall during the season. A talented painter, Joany specialises in sketching portraits and cityscapes, and in her spare time, she enjoys drinking tea and watching Schitt s Creek. Down the track, she would like to pursue a career in cosmetic prosthetics. In PyeongChang, Joany will serve as Australian Paralympic Winter Team cocaptain alongside Para-alpine skier Mitchell Gourley. After becoming a double limb amputee in 2014 while surfing in a remote area of Esperance s Wylie Bay, Sean was determined to keep an active lifestyle. In 2015, he tried snowboarding for the first time on a boys trip in Canada, where he was approached by the head coach of the Canadian Para-snowboard Team. Excited by the prospect of returning to sport, Sean contacted the APC on his return home, and was invited to attend a specialist camp for Para-snowboarders with upper limb impairments. During his first competitive season on the snow, Sean achieved some incredible top 15 results, including sixth place in the Men s Snowboard Cross SB-UL at the 2016/17 World Para-snowboard World Cup events in Sierra-at-Tahoe, USA and La Molina, Spain, and disposed of two-time World Championships medallist, Great Britain s Ben Moore, in the snowboard cross at the World Cup Finals in PyeongChang, South Korea. Sean is inspired by Australian teammate Ben Tudhope, whose passion, he says, motivates him to train as he works towards his goal of winning gold at the Paralympic Games. Off the slopes, Sean is a qualified electrician and holds a Certificate III in Tourism. He enjoys skateboarding in his spare time. Following his stellar Games debut, where he was also named the Closing Ceremony flagbearer for the Australian Paralympic Team, Ben was invited to compete at the 2015 Winter X Games in Aspen, USA, where he placed 11th in the Snowboarder X Adaptive event. A monumental achievement for any athlete, he returned the following year to win bronze in the same event, in a moment which remains the highlight of his still early career. Competing at the 2016/17 World Para World Cup Finals in PyeongChang,, Ben set up a bronze medal showdown in the Men s Snowboard Cross SB-LL2 with Japan s Gurimu Narita, and will return to Paralympic competition in 2018 with a World Cup silver medal, after claiming his first ever podium finish in the banked slalom at the 2017/18 World Cup event in Treble Cone, New Zealand.
