CCNL Update October 06, 2016 A note from the head coach: Luke Dunphy This 2017 season is a rebuilding year for Team XCNL. We are very excited about the young up and coming skiers that we have added to our roster this year brings seven new faces to our team, which is almost half of our athletes. The whole team will be travelling to the Eastern Canadian Championships, which is every bit a National Event. This will give our young skiers an opportunity to see things on the National scale and the level of competition that exists out there. A select group will be competing at the Canadian Nationals at the end of the season in Canmore, AB. We have our sights set high again and hoping the team will have some top 25 finishes and hopefully some in the top 10. Either way, we are going to come home faster skiers and have fun doing it. 1

Corner Brook Dryland Camp, June 26-28, 2016 Report by Luke Dunphy, XCNL Head Coach, June 30, 2016 This year s Corner Brook Dryland camp was held June 26 to 28. This was a great way to kick off the summer training as school had just ended and summer is upon us. The camp was very well attended with athletes from St. Johns to Labrador, a total of 26 participants. Housing worked great again at the Grenfell campus and this remains a very good place to host a ski camp. On Sunday we went ski striding on the Corner Brook stream trail and Ginger route. The trail is awesome and the hot weather warranted periodic dips in the nearby stream. Afterward the group did a swim at the Arts and Culture pool. Monday was spent entirely in Steady Brook with many roller ski sprints, drills and training. Lunch was served at Marble Mountain and we did some more ski striding up the mountain. Again the very hot weather took its toll on the group and we spent some time cooling off in Steady Brook. After supper we visited Coleman s Food Centre for a nutrition information session with a local dietician. Tuesday involved a yoga session to stretch out sore muscles and some roller ski races as well. After break time, we held a running race and then had a strength competition. The weather was beautiful for the full 3 days and there was lots of help from parent volunteers at this camp. I would like to thank the following people for their contributions at this event: Janice Chambers Justin Whittle Sarah Roberts Christine Campbell Jamie Merrigan Erik Charron Angela Foster Megan Smith Awesome job! Thanks to everyone for your support! Photos below by Erik Charron. 12

St. John s Labor Day Dryland Camp Reported by Luke Dunphy, Sept. 25, 2016 XCNL hosted its second dryland camp of the off-season over the long weekend in September. The Browne family offered up their large house to accommodate any participants for the weekend. The camp kicked off Friday afternoon, with a ski striding and hiking session at the Signal Hill trails, and a group dinner downtown! Saturday included roller ski technique and time trial session at Oliver s Pond in the morning with strength workouts at Bannerman Park in the afternoon. The evening was just as action packed with a trip to the paintball field just outside the city. On Sunday we made our way to Bay Bulls for another full day of Sea Kayaking and trail running on the fabulous East Coast Trail. Big thanks to The Outfitters for some great Kayaking discounts and their awesome guides. There was lots of great help at the camp and we would like to thank all parents who volunteered, the Browne s for their lovely home, and coaches Erik Charron, Jeff Cameron, Luke Dunphy, and Nichola Ellis. Great job everyone! 16 Coaching Staff Profiles Luke Dunphy Luke has been skiing for 27 years, which was shortly after he learned to walk. Even before, that his father would ski around the trails with an infant Luke strapped on his back. It is safe to say that cross-country skiing is in his blood. Luke competed at the national level with the Provincial ski team in the early 2000 s. After an engineering degree at Dalhousie he returned to Newfoundland and Labrador to operate a family business. This led to the opportunity as Head Coach of the Newfoundland and Labrador Cross Country Ski Team in Luke revisited the National Scene in Whitehorse last year for the first time in 12 years, this time as a coach. He is very proud of the team s performance, capturing several gold medals and top 20 finishes. He hopes to see more of that this year!!! 16
Erik Charron Erik Charron has a passion for cross country skiing. Although a latecomer to the sport starting at the age of 20, Erik has competed at Nationals several times as a senior. He enjoys racing and still competes on the provincial circuit, plus the occasional Canada Cup. He has been coaching with the Avalon Nordic Ski Club since 2006, most often as the head coach of their Challenge Group program; and has been assisting XCNL with camps and race trips since Erik was 1 of 3 provincial team head coaches for the and seasons. Erik balances hard workouts with laughter and team building. His goal is to develop athletes who enjoy the sport and will remain active long after their top competitive years are over. 17
Jeff Cameron Jeff is a competitive cross-country skier in Canada, competing in both national and international races. Highlights from his competitive racing career include competing on the National Development Center in Thunder Bay and representing Canada at the World University Games in Tarvisio, Italy. After retiring from competitive skiing in 2008 to focus on his career as a forester and to start a family, he volunteered his time as an Assistant Coach with Big Thunder Nordic Ski club in Thunder Bay Ont. Jeff moved to St John s NL in 2014 and has been coaching with Avalon Nordic Ski Club since. He is very passionate about the sport and enjoys working with young skiers to help them achieve their goals in sport and life. 18
Mark Tierney Mark brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Ski Community in Newfoundland and Labrador. As a varsity skier at Lakehead University, he developed world class training habits. He has coached at the World University Games, the Youth Olympics, and currently coaches the Newfoundland and Labrador Cross Country Ski Team, and twice per week leads a local challenge group. He has also had the honour to volunteer at the Olympics and help organize numerous events. He is the highest trained coaching facilitator in the province and continues to train coaches throughout the year. 19

Roller Ski Rocks! July 12, 2016! photo credit: skitrax.com Full article opment/skill-development-programs/racing-rocks!/roller- Ski-Rocks!.aspx?lang=en-CA#.V_Ly2TKZPYU Why roller ski: Cross country skiing is a highly technical sport that requires years of practice in order for a skier to become technically proficient. Unfortunately we do not have year-round snow so that athletes can have continuous practice. Rollers skiing is the most specific way of skiing in the summer (other than skiing on glaciers ) and therefore provides skiers with the opportunity to develop and refine their ski technique year round. CCC s rollerskiing policy. 22
