3 Cellphone Use at School and Social Media School policy states that students are only permitted to use their cellphones during instructional time for instructional purposes with teacher permission. It also states that cameras or other recording devices are not permitted to be used during regular school days. Lack of adherence to these policies is increasingly creating issues at school. Please speak to your child to ensure that they are following these policies that are in place to ensure student privacy and proper use of instructional time. Also, please remind your child that posting pictures/ videos of other individuals without their permission is not allowed. Similarly, the creation of social media accounts relating to school events and/or school staff is strictly prohibited. Twitter We invite all of our school community to follow us on Marble Mountain Ski Trip From March the Physical Education Department at Holy Spirit High travelled to beautiful Corner Brook NL to ski and snowboard the slopes of Marble Mountain. Fifty-one students, 3 teachers, 4 interns and 2 chaperones attended this amazing weekend. The conditions were perfect on the slopes and the students were exceptional. There was even a sighting of a rare Newfoundland giant squirrel!! Pre-Parachuting Zachary Barnes Being in the Army Cadet program now for 3 years, I ve always heard about this Canadian Forces Basic Parachutist Course that every Cadet wants to do and always wondered what kind of an experience it would be. I had the chance to attend the selection course, which is known as Pre-Para and I had no idea what to expect. Well a plane ride to Canadian Forces Base Trenton in Ontario, lots of push ups, running and Mock Tower jumps told me exactly what it would be like. The moment we arrived on that cold Sunday night, we were on our faces in the snow and mud. Why? Well our Sgt. Major thought push-ups were a great way to get introduced into the program. Actually he thought push ups were the best thing since sliced bread, as we were doing at least 1000 a day, in sets of 25, every single one at the same time, for punishment and for his pleasure. Our days started at 0600 on the nose till usually 1900, running, doing push ups and lots of team sports and back breaking physical training (which usually had lots of push ups). How we got through that, was through motivation within each other. You never got through anything by yourself; you got through it together, as a whole, and if you didn t, a good set of 25 push-ups were given out for everyone. For us Newfoundland and Labrador Cadets, (there being only three of us) we were the first ever to be selected to attend this course, so the pressure was put on our shoulders, as not only did we have to represent our province better than the other ones, but we had to be able to shine against all the other Atlantic provinces to get a recommendation letter to get on the actual parachuting course. To get recommended you had to excel in your physical fitness test and physical training that was dished out (which was a everyday all day sort of deal), pass your Canadian Forces Medical exam, and do the Mock Tower jump, which was the highlight of the course. After being strapped into the most uncomfortable harness by some of the scariest guys in the military, (Parachute Instructors, also known as PI s) you had to jump out of a 35 foot tower, which was almost like zip lining, but it resembled parachuting. I m still deciding on what was scarier; the terrifying split second free fall before getting pulled tight by the line, or the 200 pound PI screaming GO at the top of his lungs. For those of us who managed to pass this, we got to go see a kid s movie at the theater, with a pat on the back with our recommendation letter saying we are good to go for the Parachuting course in the summer and a whole lot of knowledge on what to expect and what we are capable of. On this course I learned that heights aren t something to be afraid of, push ups suck, and no matter how hard it is, you can get through it, the only one stopping you is yourself.
