1 Editor: Peter Higgs Volume 18 Number 8 February 2015 President s report February 2015 You know you are on a winner when you can combine your recreational pursuits with work. In my role in TAFE that s not ever going to be easy however the WBGT was recently contacted by 2 High Schools from the East Coast about obtaining a wooden boat to restore and at the same time I have been in discussions with the School and Community Leaders about TAFE providing vocational and enterprise programs for the community. I think you would call this eloquent synchronicity. models which have financially benefitted the Guild. Many thanks Bob! I would also like to thank all members who worked on the models the Guild makes particularly David Barnes and Noel Hall who worked on the cabin details for us. Now that we have the Festival out of the way we are going to get our freshly painted and maintained crafts wet and enjoy the beautiful Tasmanian waterways whilst the weather remains so fine. Regardless of word play, as many readers would appreciate, there is not much that you don t learn when you build a boat, particularly as a team. Problem solving, mathematics / science, logistics, communication, cooperation and collaboration are just a few of the vocational talents that you need to acquire and then there s all of those traditional word working skills. The WBGT and TasTAFE will assist these Schools and Community and if any of our readers from up St Marys and St Helens way want to get involved you can contact myself or Susan Probert, transitioninaction@gmail.com. They are a very keen bunch up that way and are looking for assistance and donations, currently they are looking to buy a Hull and to raise money they need items for raffles etc. Stephen Conway President Secretary s report February 2015 Due to the business of the Festival this report will be available at the February meeting. This is the Tuesday after the Australian Wooden Boat Festival and what a weekend. It started with our welcome event for Associations and invited guests from all around Australia (and some from the bigger overseas ). We hosted a barbecue and a large amount of people turned up for the barbecue, cold drinks and boating fellowship. I had the chance to catch up with several members of the WBASA and it was great to listen to their plans for the upcoming Goolwa Festival. The Guild also shared a stand over the weekend with Boatnames.com.au which enabled us to promote wooden boats, sell some of our merchandise and raise the money we require to keep doing all of the things that our members want us to do. It was very generous of Boatnames.com.au as they sponsored our site. Thanks again Boatnames.com.au, it is really appreciated. I want to thank all of our members who helped out with the Guild activities over the festival and in the preparation. It is a real delight to be part of the Guild and to actively participate in something that is of such an interest to the general public. I would like to especially thank Bob Hamilton, our member from Victoria for his generousity for his Graeme Broxam Secretary Treasurer s report February 2015 Due to the business of the Festival this report will be available at the February meeting. However, it looks like our takings are very successful. Cheers, Hugo
2 Terra Linna report February 2015 Terra Linna looked a treat at the Festival and she can be very proud, as can members of the WBGT can be, of the accolades received from local, interstate and international visitors. More importantly, Rob Nolan and crew sailed her right in to her berth in Kings Pier no. 1 finger, quit an accomplishment Rob and crew, well done! Terra Linna is now back on a mooring in Lindisfarne Bay. Thursday Gaffers Now that we have spruced her up and have her poised at Lindisfarne Bay I propose we start with a Thursday Gaffer outing where Terra Linna can be sailed on a monthly (date to be determined at the Feb WBGT meeting) basis in the a.m. so that crew can then enjoy lunch at the MYCT. Please let me know if you are interested in participating? However, many thanks Alistair and neighbours for a great weekend. More to come. From Graeme. Editor! WBGT Year Book The WBGT would like to create an up to date list of boats owned by members of the Guild, with the intention of producing a Members Year Book in time for the Australian Wooden Boat Festival next year. The Secretary would appreciate it if you could fill the attached form and it to him at gjbroxam@bigpond.com for inclusion in the WBGT s records. Please indicate if you would NOT like your details published in the proposed Year Book. Please see attached forms. Now the AWBF is complete please get behind Graeme Broxam and provide your boats details. Just copy and paste your AWBF entry details to his form attached. Graeme Broxam, Secretary and Year Book publisher. WBGT Tamar Dinghy, Damar Peter Higgs Terra Linna Project Manager Roses, Bouquets and Bubbly to Graeme Nichols. Graeme completed the restoration of Damar to perfection and had her on display at the AWBF. Many thanks Graeme for such a great success. Perhaps Damar can join the Thursday Gaffers? Although not a gaffer! From the Editors Desk For February 2015 Just a little busy so this Skeg will just be an AWBF pictorial. Thanks to Jim for helping with the benches and Rob Nolan, Graeme Hunt, Ronin and Cherelle as well as Barb Murphy re Indonesian boats. Peter Higgs.
