1 Spring 2018 Bald Eagle Lake Flood of 2018 by Carol Ulman visit our website at belpoa.org 2018 Saturday, May 19 BELPOA Annual Meeting 10:00 AM New Location OLD TOWN HALL 486 MILL STREET ORTONVILLE Lake issues to be discussed Election of Board Members Coffee and doughnuts served Flooded yards along Glenfield The winter of saw one of the best seasons for ice fishing and snowmobiling on the lake. We had over a foot of ice and snow cover most of the winter. But then the week of February 18 turned warm with degree days with three days straight of rain and the spring thaw had begun! Usually this is not a problem for residents because there is a county maintained drain at the north end of the lake to help with the overflow. BELPOA and the county were notified by lake resident John Dean on February 20th that the lake was continuing to rise and had breached some sea walls. The Water Resource Commissioner (WRC) came out to unclog the drain and eventually realized it had actually collapsed! Continued on next page July 4 Boat Parade With summer just around the corner it s time to get ready for the annual 4th of July boat parade! 2 VOICE OF THE EAGLE Flood of 2018, continued Pumps at work on Glass Road Dunwoodie beach Lake levels were at record highs, more than 12 inches above the flood level! The WRC immediately brought out a massive pump to bypass the drain and pump directly into the county storm drain at Glass road and M-15, but the the water kept rising. So a second pump was brought in off Allen Road and the county brought in a contractor to dig up and temporarily patch the drain until it can be replaced this spring. The houses on the north and west sides of the lake sustained the most damage. Sand bags were available for any resident who needed them at the beach area, but unfortunately several houses had already sustained water damage. BELPOA paid for sandbags and sand was donated by Bedrock Express of Ortonville. BELPOA board members would like to thank Bedrock Express as well as the EIPA members who helped locate the sand bags for the lake residents and allowed use of their beach area for residents to come get the sandbags! We would also like to extend our gratitude to the workers and engineers who worked diligently to get the problem fixed! Happy Spring! It s finally back. This was a long, cold winter. That s for sure. I m glad that our nice summer weather is just around the corner. Time for getting the docks re-installed and our boats back into the water. This is always my favorite time of the year. Please be careful and courteous at the boat launch and pay close attention to how far you place the swim platforms out away from shore. It seems every year, we continue to get calls from numerous residents concerned about the far distance from shore some of the platforms are and the danger it poses for boaters and skiers. Thank you in advance for being courteous about this. As I m sure you are aware, the lake level was very high and had flooded some yards and houses this winter. Our board member Carol Ulman has addressed this issue in her section of the newsletter. She led the charge working with Oakland County. Thanks to Carol and our resident John Dean, who helped tremendously, for all of your work on this. Additionally, we have a change to the Treasurer position on the board as well. Because of personal commitments Jody Hall was unable to continue as treasurer. Barb Duval was elected by the board to take over the position. I d like to thank Jody personally and on behalf of the Board for her years of service in the Treasurer position. Jody still remains on the board and I look forward to working with her more in the future. Let me know if there are any questions or comments. I am always just a phone call away. See you out on the lake soon! Kal Kazak BELPOA President 2

3 SPRING 2018 In Memoriam Aggie Fick Aggie passed away peacefully in her home on Bald Eagle Lake on January 5, 2018 after a long illness. Her wish to remain at home was made possible through the love and care of faithful friends and neighbors and by the compassionate staff of the McLaren Hospital Hospice. Aggie lived on Bald Eagle at least 40 years, was involved with Eagle Island Protective Association and very much involved with the Bald Eagle Lake Property Owners Association, serving on the board from 1995 to In the late 70s and early 80s she and her long term friend Dorothy Porter, MD organized the annual BELPOA picnic at Dunwoodie beach for lake residents. Until 2010 BELPOA had raffles for fundraising and Aggie was always one of the top sellers. When sailboarding became popular Aggie was the first person on the lake to try it. Recently she served as an emeritus board member. After nursing school, she contin ued her medical training by becom ing a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA). Her skill, caring, sense of humor and reassuring presence made her a favorite in many Michigan hospitals and clinics. Her many activities included extensive travel, water and snow skiing, boating, flying (as a licensed pilot), and scuba diving. She loved cars, including her Pulse (a modified Harley Davison motorcycle) and her Smart Car ( Ag s Toy ) which she bought in 2007, before such cars were known in Michigan. She was an avid reader. She also gave back to her community, including delivering Meals on Wheels. Her smiling face will be missed by many. 4 VOICE OF THE EAGLE Water Test Results Taken in November 2017 by Bruce White Again the ammonia levels in the lake are rising. What does this mean: MORE WEEDS. What causes the ammonia to increase? 1. Fertilizer runoff. 2. Burning leaves. AREA What we test for Units Desired Ammonia mg/l < 0.1 Nitrate Nitrite as N < <0.050 < < < mg/l < 5.0 Nitrate as N < 0.05 < 0.05 < 0.05 < 0.05 < 0.05 mg/l < 90 Nitrite as N < < < < < mg/l < 90 Total Phosphorus < < < < < mg/l <.03 BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) < 3.0 <3.0 < < < mg/l < 3.0 ph Coliform, Fecal < < CFU/ 100mL 3 < 2000 Alternatives to fertilizer: Mow your lawn at a height of 2 1 /2 to 3 1 /2 inches tall every five to seven days. Water your grass so it receives 1 inch of water per week. Over seed in spring and fall Spread a 1/4-inch layer of compost over your lawn two to three times per year. gardenguides.com/ green-grass-fertilizer.html Ice-In-Out The days the lake is covered with ice. BELPOA is committed to maintaining the quality of the water in the lake clean enough for swimming. Every year we run the tests below to monitor the health of the lake. WHAT WE TEST FOR: AMMONIA (desired: <0.1mg/L) If ammonia is present in significant quantities, it can indicate that the water column does not have sufficient oxygen to oxidize ammonia to nitrite and nitrate. When available, all three of these nutrients can promote plant and algae growth when phosphate levels are sufficient. Ammonia can be toxic to fish and other animals. TOTAL PHOSPHORUS (desired: below 0.03 mg/l) Lakes with high phosphorus waters are considered polluted or eutrophic. ph (Positive Hydrogen) Measures the acidity of a lake, 1 being a very acid condition, 14 a very basic condition. BOD (desired: 3 5 mg/l) Biochemical Oxygen Demand represents the amount of oxygen consumed by bacteria and other microorganisms as they decompose organic matter. 1 2 mg/l Clean water with little organic waste 3 5 mg/l Moderately clean water with some organic waste 6 9 mg/l Lots of organic material and many bacteria >10 mg/l Very poor water quality. 5 Have fun on the water, but keep it safe! Reckless Operation Some examples are: Weaving your vessel through congested waterway traffic or swerving at the last possible moment in order to avoid collision Jumping the wake of another vessel Chasing, harassing, or disturbing wildlife with your vessel Causing damage from the wake of your vessel Going Too Fast It is illegal to operate a vessel: In excess of 55 mph At greater than slow, no wake speed when a person is in the bow of a vessel without proper seating Faster than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions (weather, vessel traffic, etc.) Slow, No Wake Speed means the slowest speed at which it is still possible to maintain steering and which does not create a wake. Riding on the Bow Is Illegal if the vessel is not equipped with bow seating and the vessel is operating at greater than slow, no wake speed. Persons also are not allowed to ride on the gunwale or front of a pontoon. Boat Safety Check List Fire Extinguishers Required when carrying flammable liquids or fuel on board. All vessels, including PWCs, are required to have a Type B fire extinguisher(s) on board if one or more of the following conditions exist: Closed compartments under seats where portable fuel tanks may be stored Closed storage compartments in which flammable or combustible materials may be stored Double-bottoms not sealed to the hull or which are not completely filled with flotation material Permanently installed fuel tanks Approved types of fire extinguishers are identified by the following marking on the label Marine Type USCG Approved followed by the type and size symbols and the approval number. Improper Direction is defined as the failure to operate in a counterclockwise direction. Please inform guests of the proper direction. Improper Distance To maintain a proper distance when you are operating at greater than slow, no wake speed, the vessel or persons being towed must not be within 100 feet of: A shoreline, any moored or anchored vessel A dock or raft Any marked swimming area or person(s) in the water Improper Distance for PWCs means that, if operating at greater than slow, no wake speed, PWCs also must not cross within 150 feet behind another vessel other than another PWC. Steering and Stopping a PWC A PWC has no brakes. Always allow plenty of room for stopping. No power means no steering control. Life Jackets Courtesy... the best safety strategy 5 Read more about life jackets at SafeBoatingCampaign.com Lights Required between the hours of sunset and sunrise. Red and green navigation lights. White stern and/or anchor light. To see the complete Boating Handbook and read the interactive program go to: html?page=1 or belpoa.org/boating.html This is just a guideline and people are still responsible to check the local laws and requirements when they are out on the water.
