1 Lewiston Lake Living TLPOA: Our Mission Keep Our Lakes Healthy May, 2015 President s Message Happy Spring! On behalf of the TLPOA, welcome to spring 2015, by this time we surely hope. Here we go into another, for me, East Twin Lake cottage season. For others, just another annual celebration of spring. Whichever group you are in, we are all truly blessed to share the north country in the Lewiston community. The TLPOA Board has had a very busy off season with our continued focus on: Health of our Lakes: EWM: fund raising is on target thanks to the efforts and leadership of Bonnie and Tom Page; treatment application on West Twin is scheduled for this Spring due to the dedicated efforts of Dominic Manzi, Mike Dombrowski and Jan Fultz; water testing will be performed by Don Hunkins on East Twin and Ron Compton on West Twin; East Twin aeration systems will be ready to go thanks to the leadership of Tim Manganello. Mike Dombrowski continues his focus as the liaison with Albert Township, the Lewiston community and many other TLPOA initiatives. Membership meetings are scheduled for May 23 and August 15. Please plan on attending. Check our website for times and location. Regular and special newsletters are being published thanks to the efforts of Dominic Manzi. The Beach Party is on track to take place on July 18 th due to the event chairperson Karen Wilding. Boat ramp signage updates for the West Twin DNR site, Marina ramps and Buttles Road are progressing through the approval process. As you can see, our activities continue to be focused within the TLPOA mission, greatest segments being centered on the health of our lakes. Your support time, efforts, and generous donations assists in maintaining this focus. If you haven t done so already, please take the time to renew and submit your 2015 TLPOA membership. Together we make a difference in maintaining the health of our lakes. 3 Aeration Update-East Twin Lake By: Tim Manganello Hello Fellow Lake Lovers, it is that time of year again. Our thoughts now turn to docks, boat hoists and when will the last chunk of ice melt on East and West Twin Lakes. It also means it is time to fire up the East Twin aeration bubblers. I took over coordinating this project from Mike Dombrowski in mid-summer last year. On behalf of all of us, I would like to thank Mike for his fine job of overseeing this project. In 2014, the aeration project saw an increased focus on maintenance and equipment upgrading of the 24 bubbler units and four air compressors. The original company that installed the aeration equipment (Tri- County Aquatics) 11 years ago was brought back to review the status of our system. The feedback indicated the system was working well and there continues to be visual improvement in the elimination of the sediment. In 2004, the sediment range of six different locations was 1 to 7 feet deep and in 2014 the reading was in the 1 to 2 foot range. As land marks, you can use Buttles Road, the Marina and the Gazebo that is half way between the two along the west shoreline. Just let us know if the suspect problem is between Buttles Rd. and the Gazebo or between the Marina and the Gazebo. Also let us know if it is a bubbler that is closer or farther away from the shoreline. This will be a major help to our service team. Then just us with the problem and approximate location at: LewistonLakeLiving@gmail.com. In closing, I would like to thank all of the donors that have contributed to the Aeration Project. As we move forward, your donations are even more important! As I mentioned earlier, we will be entering the repair and replacement phase for the equipment and our 2015 budget is $8,500. We are making great progress with removing the sediment, now is not the time to let up! Thank you in advance for your continued donations, Tim Manganello (East Twin) As usual, last summer our local company (Duane Ball and his service team) serviced the system and continued to clean the individual bubbler heads and check the air compressors monthly. We replaced 6 of the 24 bubbler units (each unit is comprised of 4 bubbler heads) and had one compressor rebuilt by the Twin Lakes Marina. In 2015, all of us can help monitor the system performance. As I mentioned earlier, our aeration system is 11 years old and is now entering the repair and replacement phase of its life. With your help, we need to look for weak bubbler air streams, broken heads and cut air supply lines. So how can you help? As you cruise around East Twin, if you notice any underperforming or broken bubblers, cut air line, etc.; please us at the Lake Association address: LewistonLakeLiving@gmail.com As a method to help with the location of an aeration problem, I suggest the following approach: There is a set of bubblers that are located closer to shore, and another set of bubblers that are farther away from shore. East Twin Lake Aeration Study Site map of sediment location, depth contours, sampling locations and Vertex aerator placements Note: For more information about the East Twin Aeration Project, I refer you to the August 2014 TLPOA on the TLPOA website or an in depth historical article written by Greg Bator at the following website: parian3.pdf

4 Eurasian Watermilfoil Update By: Dominic Manzi It was late August, early September 2014 when we received confirmation of the invasive species, Eurasian Watermilfoil (EWM) in a dozen locations on West Twin Lake. This aquatic plant has unfortunately found its way to thousands of inland lakes and when left un-checked, can destroy a lakes ecosystem and render large areas virtually unusable for recreational activities. A lot has happened since last fall and we are very pleased to announce the 2015 Eurasian Watermilfoil Treatment Program on West Twin is underway and tentatively scheduled for late spring. The DEQ has granted the permit for treatment and provided it to the Applicator firm selected by the Board, Aquatic Nuisance Plant Control. Over 200 permission slips have been received and the information has been transferred to maps around the lake for proper location identification. Treatment will only occur in front of a property if a YES permission slip was received from the owner. While the specific treatment date will depend on the actual growing season of EWM, and the weather, treatment will not take place during the Memorial Holiday period (May 21 st May 26 th ). Note: The DEQ does require a 24 hour swimming restriction from the date of application. At least one week prior to treatment, residents within the treatment zones and those at least 100 ft. from these treatment areas will receive a 2015 Lake Treatment Notice in the mail. This notice will explain the treatment process and procedures of the Applicator. The Applicator will be out in mid spring collecting EWM growth data to determine any program adjustments as necessary to the DEQ permit or the treatment program schedule. proposed treatment locations will also be posted at the DNR Public Access Site and the Twin Lakes Marina. Water samples may be collected approximately 3 to 4 weeks after treatment to verify the amount of herbicide (Triclopyr) remaining in the water within the previously treated areas. If a no detect exists, the irrigation water-use restriction can be lifted. There will be additional lake surveys to determine the treatment effectiveness and to prepare a treatment strategy for the 2016 season. The TLPOA Board will be directly involved in this process and insure proper communication to our members. For more information, visit our website: and click on 2015 West Twin Lake Milfoil Control Treatment Program. There you will find a one page letter outlining the treatment program, the actual 2015 Lake Treatment Notice, and instructions on joining the contact list for specific s with respect to the West Twin Treatment Program. Lastly, none of this would have been possible without the overwhelming generosity of those residents and property owners who donated money to fight EWM. To all of you, THANKS!!! Judd Wellard took this photo. It shows Neil Godby, DNR Fish Biologist holding a pike. The DNR was conducting fish surveys, tagging about 300 fish. Anglers catching a tagged fish will be asked to call in info on the tag to the DNR. Residents should watch the shoreline areas within the treatment locations for the YELLOW signs that will be posted a day in advance of the treatment date. These signs list the water-use restrictions within water areas surrounding the proposed treatment zones. Please be attentive to these signs and leave them up until water-use restrictions expire. We suggest $0.67 for each lakefront foot, or a minimum of $ for shared access. Eurasian Water Milfoil Treatment Contribution Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM) has been discovered on West Twin. It is imperative this invasive aquatic plant is controlled and not allowed to spread and over run our lakes. To proceed with a comprehensive treatment program we need broad support. Your contribution will cover the cost of mapping, surveying and treating the infested areas in 2015 and will make sure we have the necessary funds to continue this program in We are looking for Lake Hero s that will contribute $500 each to this effort. We are suggesting a significant initial contribution of: $3.00 -$2.50 per foot of frontage for those with EWM identified in front of property. $2.50 -$2.00 per foot of frontage for those on West Twin $ $1.00 per foot of frontage for those on East Twin $100 for those who use the lake through a Lake Access This is an important project that affects all of us. We welcome all levels of contributions. 7 Personal Watercraft (PWC) / Jet-Ski Rules of Operation It is against the law to operate a PWC during the period starting one hour before sunset and ending at 8:00 am. It is against the law for a person under the age of 14 to operate a PWC. If born after , operators must have a boater safety certificate. In addition, persons age 14 or 15, must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Operator/Riders must wear a personal flotation device (PFD). The ignition switch lanyard must be attached to the operator s PFD. Travel at a low No Wake speed at all times when within 100 feet of the shoreline, a dock, raft, buoyed swimming area, or any person in the water, including swimmers on floatation devices. Avoid swerves at last possible moment and do not weave in and out of congested traffic. Do not jump the wake of another boat. Always operate the PWC at slow no wake speed when within 150 ft behind another moving vessel. Never operate a PWC to harass wildlife in any manner. Improper Direction is defined as the failure to operate in a counterclockwise direction, except in areas marked by well-defined channels or rivers. Travel at a safe speed at all times constantly scanning left and right for other boaters. Editor s Note: Last year we published the information listed above after hearing from several neighbors about concerns of jet skis being operated in an unsafe manner. After reading about some tragic accidents that happened on other Michigan Lakes in 2014, it seemed more than worthwhile putting this info in the newsletter again. If you own a PWC, please take the time to review the rules above and make sure anyone operating your jet ski is fully trained and meets all the legal requirements to operate. A Boater Safety Certificate is issued after a person completes an approved Boater Safety Program. Michigan has an online program available which does take a few hours to complete. Take the time now to get this information to any prospective PWC operator to give them the time to complete this valuable course. Sincerely, Dominic Manzi
