2 FROM THE PRESIDENT Greetings to all members, The past month has been a collection of frenzied activity for all at the club. Thank you to all who have contributed in any way to the successes at or around Moana. SENIOR STATES AT MOANA Sincere thanks to all members who contributed in many ways, both big and small, to the success of the weekend of the Senior States. On the weekend, we had contrasting days with the Saturday catering for those who enjoy mill pond conditions and then the Sunday, which provided stormy seas, strong winds, rain and challenging conditions for the brave and hardy!! In the last newsletter, I acknowledged a number of members who had contributed in a significant way to the carnival. Once again, to those who patrolled, those who officiated, those who represented Moana as competitors, those who were members of the working party, those who served behind the bar, the countless members who assisted with the BBQ and catering and those on the organising group, a very big thank you!! JUNIOR PRESENTATION Congratulations to all Moana juniors on a very successful season, where the junior members, age managers and coaches had to endure trying weather and beach conditions for the first part of the season. The principal observation of our junior members is that they are a brave, resilient and skilful group of young people, capable of accepting challenges beyond their years. We can be assured that if they are part of our succession planning at the club, Moana SLSC is assured of competent life savers and excellent competitors. Thank you to Sonia Herpich, our Junior Coordinator and Angela Phillips, the Junior Secretary for their commitment and hard work in providing opportunities for our junior members. Congratulations also to all juniors who were recognised at the presentation afternoon on the 25 th March. And a sincere thank you to the Life Members, who provided the human resource on the day in catering for our juniors and their families. BUILDING A CULTURE We have every reason to be proud of a culture at Moana that has been built over 79 years at the club. There have been tough times and waning numbers on occasions, but the resilience of our members has become a hallmark of the club. As members, we all have the responsibility to build on this traditional culture in a positive and constructive way. Sadly, there have been isolated incidents of criticism, disloyalty and blame at the club, which can cut across this affirming spirit. We all have disagreements and it s important for us to express our views in an assertive and constructive way through the correct channels. Unnecessary negative talk can erode this way forward for the club and I ask each member to reflect on the nature of their conversation before they let down to others. In particular, Facebook comments can be misunderstood and can be destructive of this positive culture. Our Facebook Manager reports that some of the uploads can be ill-considered and critical and she has her work cut out constantly monitoring the site for inappropriate information that has been shared. Management recognises the benefits of the Moana Facebook page in communicating with members, but also realises that if it is used unsuitably, it can cause division and upset. I ask you then to be considered and exercise responsibility before using the site. PATROLLING Our major task at the club is to keep our beaches safe. To achieve this goal, we require a dedicated number of qualified surf lifesavers to patrol our beach each weekend over the summer. I would like to thank all those who have committed their time and energy into ensuring that the public have felt safe on our beach over the past summer months. The patrols for the season finish on the 17 th April, Easter Monday. In addition to thanking all patrolling members, I would like to acknowledge the work of Club Captain, Neil Wilson and Club Vice Captain, Harriet Whiley, who have ensured that our patrolling is not only compliant with surf expectations, but is also efficient on a weekly basis. 2 P a g e

3 TRAINING An area that often goes unrecognised at the club is the outstanding work that our training officers undertake on a weekly basis. Every Saturday and often during the week, you will see our team of Trainers actively engaged in providing the necessary training for our future surf life savers. Without this dedicated team, we would struggle to provide qualified patrolling members. Congratulations to the latest Bronze squad, which successfully achieved their qualifications. Thank you to all the Training team and in particular to Tony Francis, Chief Instructor and to Sheena Wilson, who has the unenviable task of completing the paperwork as Training Support Officer. GRANT Just recently, the club has been successful in securing a grant for a new ATV. The money will go towards the purchase of a much needed vehicle to assist with our weekly patrols. While we didn t receive the total amount of the ATV purchase in grant money, the financial support was substantial and has ensured that the club has not been financially compromised by the purchase of the ATV. I would like to acknowledge the work of Gaynor Holman and Neil Wilson, who together completed the application for the grant through SLSA. Thank you again to all who were involved at the club over the patrolling season. Don t forget that life at the club continues over the Winter. The bar will be open regularly, meals will be served through Coastline Catering and live music will be available on selected Sundays. See you on the beach, Jim Fenoughty 3 P a g e

5 CLUB CAPTAIN Competition In September 2016 the Board of Management agreed that the hours required to compete would change from 16 to 18 hours as a minimum. Consequently, if you wish to compete in any event, you will need to have 18 Patrol Hours logged. This is a small increase of 2 hours from the previous requirement. The Board of Management promulgated By-Law 3 through the Bulletin on the 18 th February For those who may not have seen it, I have included it below:- Members are reminded that they must fulfil the requirement of SLSSA Policy 5.4. (attached). BY-LAW 3 - COMPETITION CONDITIONS 3.1 Members entered with their permission by the Club in any inter club competitions, who fail to compete, shall furnish a satisfactory explanation of such failure to the Selection Committee upon request by said Committee. 3.2 No members shall compete whilst in default of their patrol obligations, or other prerequisite as determined by the board from time to time. 3.3 Minimum patrolling hours to compete shall be 18 hours for current members, other membership categories refer SLSA policy Any member failing to do so may be liable for referral to the Judiciary - Disciplinary Sub-Committee I also draw your attention to By-Law 7, Paragraph 7.3:- 7.3 Any member who is unable to attend their rostered patrol shall find a suitable substitute holding similar qualifications. Notwithstanding anything contained in preceding paragraphs of these By-Laws, the Board of Management may indicate to any members in writing that in their opinion, he or she is not giving satisfactory patrol service and call upon him/her for an explanation. 5 P a g e

But most of all the Nippers, for having such a great season. We would like to wish the Under 13 s all the best as they transition into Seniors. They have had a great season and developed friendships that will last a lifetime. Junior Surf Life Savers for Moana 2016/17 It was announced at the Junior State Titles that Libby Bell and Rory Phillips are the 2016/17 Junior Surf Life Savers for Moana SLSC. 6 P a g e

It was a great afternoon and we would like to acknowledge the Life Members who came down and cooked the BBQ and supported the event. It a great end to a very positive season. We would like to acknowledge the three Nippers who won every event in the Nipper Club Champs for their age group: Emma Charlton, Thomas Withers and Jacob Cerullo. This is the first year of Jamie Hole s Moana Triple Crown event. The event was a great success with 5 Nippers gaining a Bronze medal, 6 gaining a silver and 15 gaining a Gold for completing every event this season. Great work Team Moana Quiz Night Hosted by Moana Duke of Edinburgh s Team The Moana DofE Team would like to thank everyone who supported the Quiz Night on Saturday 25 th March. The event raised over $400 and the bar takings were in excess of $1700 for the day. Neil and Kathy Cole need a special mention for supplying the prizes and Neil worked behind the bar all night. A big thank you to Tony Francis and Cath Bennet who also donated lots of prizes. The winning team belonged to Lynda Van Rhoda and Max Simionato who took away the star prizes. Thank you also to Chemplus, StateSwim Seaford, AMF Bowling, AMF Laser, IGA Moana and Karen Evans for supplying prizes. A great night was had by all and it was organised by Toby Phillips and Joseph Butterworth, who are both completing their Gold Duke of Ed Award. Joseph was a great MC for the night and Toby as his wingman. Also supporting the event were Bronwyn Mullany, Ellie Hargreaves and Nicola Lieff. 7 P a g e

8 WHAT S ON AT THE CLUB Can all members who took a LUCKY SQUARES card to sell, please return the card and all monies raised to Karen who is at the club each Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We continue to be open for Friday night meals opening at 6pm and Sunday lunches opening at mid-day Open-mic will continue on the first Sunday of each month commencing in May.
