2 FROM THE PRESIDENT Greetings to all members, The new summer season is almost here. The early spring weather provides a spirit of optimism in what has been an eventful month for the club. TRAGIC NEWS Earlier this week the club received the devastating news that one of our junior members, Libby Bell, died suddenly and u e pe tedl. Li as the lu s Ju ior Life a er of the ear last seaso a d a e gagi g a d popular ou g lad withi the Moa a L C fa il. As a lu, e are u ited ith Li s pare ts, a a d Cr stal a d their fa il, sharing in the grief that they have experienced over the past few days. The Bell family can be assured of our continued loving support over the coming weeks. As a club, we have also been grateful for the support that we have received from SLSSA. The counselling session on Tuesda ight after Li s death a d the o goi g assista e fro A dre Bedford, E erge Operatio s Ma ager SLSSA, Bandy Edwards, State Chaplain SLSSA and Daniel Scadden, Chaplain Aldinga SLSC have been greatly appreciated by the club. If anyone would like to speak with either Andrew or Bandy, you are encouraged to contact them on their mobile phones. They have suggested to me that I pass on their details to the general membership, particularly those who are still struggling to come to terms with the tragedy. Bandy can be contacted on and Andrew is available on Once again, we can assure the Bell family of our understanding, compassion and support in this most difficult time for them. POOL INCIDENT At the start of the month, we almost experienced another tragedy at a closed Moana swimming training session at the Seaford pool. David Stickland, who has been Bar Manager for the past two seasons and who is a well-respected trainer at the lu, suffered a assi e heart atta k ear the e d of the sessio. It as right pla e, right ti e for Da id, gi e that our members were on hand to administer CPR while waiting for an ambulance. David was rushed to FMC, where he had a stent inserted in his heart and is recovering well at home prior to by-pass surgery later this month. We are grateful to the members, whose quick thinking and well-honed skills kicked in to save David from further trauma. The e ers, ho i luded Da id s ife. Hele, ere outsta di g i their deli er of first aid. On behalf of the club, thank you to you all who were involved in the incident. We also wish David well for his surgery and a speedy recovery. NICK MARTIN On a more positive note, we have just received word that Nick Martin, who is a former club member and who began as a nipper here at Moana SLSC, has been selected for the Great Britain triathlon team and will fly to Holland later this month to compete in his first International competition. Nick moved to the UK to take up an apprenticeship and competed in Fell running before turning his hand to triathlons. His long distance running ability was well-profiled here at Moana and he has always been a strong swimmer. Nick intends to return to Moana once he has completed his trade. Congratulations to Nick on his selection and we wish him well for the International competition. 2 P a g e
3 DUKE S CAFÉ As outlined in the previous newsletter, the club is now overseeing the operations of the dining facility at the club. Karen Evans will continue her association with the dining area as Manager and is currently employed by the club. We are e arki g o a re ra di g e er ise to re a e the di i g area Duke s Café. The official launching of the new café will happen in the next month and all members will be notified by Karen of the details around this launch. 6 SLSA NOTICE FROM GRAHAM FORD:- At the SLSA Board meeting on 26 August 2017 the following key initiatives were confirmed or are progressing. Review of SLSA Policies, Rules and Regulations to reduce complexity and streamline process With a focus on making the lives of our volunteers easier, SLSA has undertaken to review all SLSA Policies, Rules and Regulations. The focus is on ensuring relevance and reducing complexity. This may have an effect on existing Constitutions. Bronze Medallion Review The 34 th Edition of the Public Safety Aquatic Rescue Training Manual (SRC and Bronze Medallion) is under review, which will be due for release in 19/20 season. SRC SRC is recognised as prior learning for the Bronze Medallion. IRB Crew Award Clubs can, and are encouraged to package the IRB Crew Award alongside Bronze Medallion training. Returning Members A Skills Matrix Summary has been developed which provides the standard requirements for returning members. This means that a returning member may not have to redo the full Bronze Medallion Course. Policy 1.02 Use of Gear and Equipment This policy allows for non-qualified members to use Surf Life Saving equipment for lifesaving and surf sports activities, as long as they meet the water pre-requisites for the award. This applies for age groups U15 and above where the conditions are deemed appropriate. Patrol exemption for Junior Activity Members (SRC) Junior Activity Members who hold the Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) are exempt from having to perform patrol hours to be eligible to compete in State and National Youth Championships. Requalification process This process can be delegated to suitably qualified members to conduct, such as Patrol Captains. This allows a Club/Branch or State to approve members other than Assessors, to complete this activity. 6 P a g e
7 Policy 5.4 Competition Eligibility The Board endorsed a further refinement of Policy 5.04 and it s Guidelines. The core business of patrol hour requirements remains in place with options available to recognise other additional forms of service e.g. Water Safety. Clubs will determine competition eligibility. Australian Championships Review The Athlete Advisory Group has been expanded to include representation across multiple disciplines. Enhancements to the Youth Championships are in train and daily competition finish times are being revisited. Member Centred Approach to Digital Transformation The member centred approach to a digital transformation underwent further review by the SLSA Board, who will further dissect this information ahead of a joint workshop with State CEO s and working groups at the end of October. Promoting Surf Life Saving SBS and ABC will be promoting our movement this season, as well as our national Rip Current Awareness and Be A Life Saver Fundraising campaigns. Launching on 6 September, ABC 3 will air a 13-episode series Nippers. In addition, keep an eye out for the new Surf Life Saving Diversity commercial being aired on SBS from September to February The call to action is for community members from all backgrounds to join our movement. Please make them welcome! More information regarding the above points can be found on the SLSA Members Area. All the best for the upcoming raising of the flags and our 110 th season on patrol. Yours in surf lifesaving Graham Ford AM President Surf Life Saving Australia 7 P a g e
