4 You are involved in the local Surf Live Saving Club community. What Surf Club are you involved with and how long have you been part of that? I am a Life Member of Collaroy Surf Lifesaving Club and have been involved in the movement for 56 years. As well as having held many positions on the General Committee, I am still a member of our men s March Past Team having won numerous Branch, State and Australian Titles. However, the fondest moment of my time at Dee Why RSL was the invitation I received to dine with the Board of Directors and Executive Management in a celebration of my 20 years of service to the Club and its members and their guests. I have been treated fairly by my peers and my fellow staff members in the Gaming Room. I have always been given working hours which suit my lifestyle and Dee Why RSL is in close proximity to my home. Congratulations Colin on 20 years COLIN NEWMAN, RESPECTED STAFF MEMBER, LOCAL SURF LIFESAVING CLUB MEMBER AND GRANDFATHER, HAS HIT A MILESTONE OF 20 YEARS OF EMPLOYMENT. What was your role when you started in 1998? I was accepted as an employee of Dee Why RSL on 19th June 1998 as a Gaming Attendant after having worked in that role at Manly Leagues Club for 16 years. I have worked as a Gaming Attendant ever since. What do you enjoy about working at Dee Why RSL? I enjoy working with the friendly staff not only in Gaming but in all areas of the Club including the management. I love looking after the members and their guests, serving them tea, coffee or a cool drink and also chatting with some of our senior citizens. I am a Distinguished Service Member of Surf Lifesaving Sydney Northern Beaches. In addition to spending time on the sand I am also an active Life Member of Collaroy Swimming Club and still hold two records. I AM 73, MARRIED 48 YEARS WITH THREE DAUGHTERS AND FOUR GRANDCHILDREN ALL OF WHOM GIVE ME LOTS OF LOVE. Describe one of the most memorable moments of your time here at the club. One of my most memorable moments of my time at Dee Why RSL was when staff were invited to sample food and beverages from the newly opened Flame Lounge and Dining. Grant Easterby and Colin Newman at Colin s celebration dinner. How has the club changed over the past 20 years? In the past 20 years membership has risen from 20,000 to near 50,000. The Club has undergone a few changes, there used to be lawn bowls greens on Pittwater Road. Other changes include the development of Flame Lounge and Dining, Match Bar, the multi-level northern car park and the Zone Bowling complex. Staff numbers have also doubled from when I first started. You are a valued member of the team, what made you stay at Dee Why RSL for 20 years? What advice would you give someone wanting to work at the club? I would advise you to be available to work the hours required of you and be able to work under supervision in a team. It will be a very rewarding experience. What s something people might not know about you? I am 73, married 48 years with three daughters and four grandchildren all of whom give me lots of love. 7 COMMUNITY FUNDING OF COMPETITION FLOOR ENABLES GYMNASTS TO COMPETE AT ELITE LEVEL Dee Why RSL have been steady supporters of local organisation Manly Warringah Gymnastics Club (MWGC) for more than a decade. Based in Cromer, the MWGC has served our local community for over 30 years and now boasts over 2000 children and young adult members attending activities every week. MWGC CEO Ian Hardy says that the Club s objective is very simple; To give every member the opportunity to reach the highest level that they are each capable of achieving.to one child the goal maybe to do a cartwheel, to another it maybe to become an Olympic champion. MWGC is one of the largest sporting clubs on Sydney s Northern Beaches and one of the best and most awarded gymnastics clubs in NSW. Recently they have broken all records by having 33 athletes named in the State team to compete at the Australian Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne. From the 290 athletes selected to represent NSW, to have 33 athletes come from Manly Warringah Gymnastics is an enormous achievement. Dee Why RSL has funded an international standard competition sprung floor, which enables athletes to train at competition standard and for them to host national level sanctioned competitions. I want the Board to know how grateful we are for their help. Without the RSL we would not have the equipment to support this level of performance. Right now I m over the moon for the club and kids, it s a reward for the years of hard work done by so many people. This is a direct result of the RSL s help with the new equipment, said Ian. WITHOUT THE RSL WE WOULD NOT HAVE THE EQUIPMENT TO SUPPORT THIS LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE. Eleven artistic gymnasts competed in the women s Junior International Division Beam. Of these, 7 attendee s were from MWGC with Chloe Trisic (pictured) coming 7th overall. 16 Men s Artistic Gymnasts attended, with Johnathan Harry (also pictured) winning a National Silver Medal for High Bar. Having this world-class piece of apparatus gives our elite level gymnasts the chance to train on the same floor that they would normally compete on at major events such as State and National and International Championships.
