1 Santa Cruz State Junior Lifeguards 06/28/2018 Santa Cruz State Junior Lifeguard Competition A s B s C s At Main Beach 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. This is the information packet for the Santa Cruz State Junior Lifeguard competition to be held at Main Beach. The action will begin a 10:00 a.m. and with everyone s help, will be done at 4:00 p.m. We are having kids arrive at 9:00 a.m. Each event will have its own colored and labeled flag designating the location of each event. Each event will be held at the same venue, and each age group will move from venue to venue accordingly. Please help keep non-participants out of the way of the competitors and competition venues to ensure safety, and that the events run smoothly. The events will be held on the beach out in front of the Santa Cruz Beach Board walk, the announcing/ scoring booth will be set up directly in front of Double Shot and the Pirate Ship. Manresa, Seacliff, and Twin Lakes State programs will be participating as one agency. Santa Cruz City, Capitola, Half Moon Bay, and Monterey will be competing as separate agencies. State Lifeguards and State Assistants will be running and providing safety for all of the events. It would be greatly appreciated if other agency Instructors would like to assist with an event or provide additional water safety as long as you check-in with the State lifeguard supervising the respective event. We ask that other program assistants and captains are not in the water, unless approved by the State Lifeguard supervising the event. If needed, a first aid station will be set up at the announcing booth in addition to a State Park Lifeguard truck that will be able to provide emergency care. Age groups are divided into three categories: C s- B s- A s- 9-11yrs 12-13yrs 14-15yrs *There will not be events held for AA s due to the fact that State programs only go up to 15 years of age

2 Drop off and Pick Up For parents planning to drop-off and pick-up JG s, State Park Lifeguards will be up in the grassy area by Neptune s Kingdom ready to meet kids (at 9:00am) and see them off (at 4:00pm). Other agencies must find a way to gather their participants in a timely manner. Parents dropping off and picking up their Junior Lifeguards along Beach St. must do so in a timely fashion to keep traffic moving. Be advised, parking around Main Beach is very limited and expensive; parking can be found on Center St. (near Depot Park) or Bay St. (cross of W. Cliff Dr.) Instructors from each agency are responsible for drop off and pick up of their Junior Lifeguards. EVENTS 1. Run-Swim-Run (Orange): This is an individual event. Run right shoulder around a flag set down the beach. Left shoulder around the buoy. After exiting the water run left shoulder around the same flag and back to the finish line. Distances are as follows- A- 200m- 250m- 200m B- 200m- 200m- 200m C- 200m-150m- 200m 2. Team Taplan (Purple): Run-Swim-Paddle. 3 coed, 6 person teams. 2 Swimmers, 2 runners and 2 paddlers-ran in that order. At least two members of the opposite sex on a team. Regular foam Makai Rescue paddle boards will be supplied for this event. Paddle Boards: Makai Rescue Paddle boards will be stored and supplied for each group at the designated Taplan relay area. Traditional 10 6 and 9 paddle boards are to be stored and available for use by each agency s groups (during their designated time) at the paddle relay. 3. Paddle Relay (Yellow): 3 coed teams per beach with 6 kids per team, at least two members of the opposite sex on a team. Please note: A s are to use 10 6 hard paddle boards; B s and C s are to use 9 soft paddle boards. Each team member will paddle left shoulder around 2 buoys then hand off the paddle board to their teammate within a designated hand off zone marked by 2 lines made in the sand. By the time the anchor crosses the finish line all other 6 teammates must be sitting JG fashion in a straight line in order to place.

3 4. Water Flags (Teal): Open event. Competitors will start in the traditional flags position facing the boardwalk with their hands placed on top of one another and heals together. Each competitor should not be closer than elbows distance from the person next to them. A whistle will be the signal for retrieval. 5. Land Flags (Red): This is an open event. The girls will be held on the up-coast side and the boys will be held on the down-coast side. Once all of the agencies have arrived, determine how many participants you have in total and break them into groups accordingly. Number them off. Run the first group down to 20 kids. Run the 2nd group down to 20 and the combine groups. The start will be as follows-line each kid elbow to elbow, run a rope at their feet to make sure everyone is equal, remove the rope, explain feet together, ankles together, hand over hand, chin off hands. Once all participants are ready, send them heads down, GO (or whistle)! If you false start more than once you will be disqualified. The flags should be placed 20m from the start line. Once a child is out, ask that they leave the competition area. Awards: Ribbons will be awarded for places 1 st -3 rd on both the individual and relay events Scoring: Places 1 st through 3 rd will receive points on both individual and relay events. Points will be allocated as follows 1 st 3pts 2 nd 2pts 3 rd 1pt Instructor Meeting: There will be an instructor meeting at 9:30a.m. sharp at the announcing booth. Please come prepared with any questions or comments. Equipment: Each agency must bring the following; 1. Rescue tubes and fins for your instructors. 2. Paddle boards (10 6 hard shell paddle boards and 9 soft paddle boards).
