An extra welcome to our new members - I hope you enjoy your time with the club as much as my family and I do. One thing I can say is that helping out on the beach and in the water has been very rewarding so get involved and enjoy. It was great to see so many people on the beach on Sunday for the start of nippers. It was a gorgeous day so hopefully it is a sign of things to come. Our voluntary weekend patrols at Oriental Bay start at the end of November so stop and say hello if you see us on the beach. These patrols are at the heart of what we do - keeping people safe in the water. Our first competitions for both nippers and seniors were on the weekend of the 22/23 November and congratulations to all those who participated. I look forward to seeing everyone on the beach over the summer. Cheers Paula NIPPERS OPENING DAY: 9 NOVEMBER The first nippers session of the season had a great turn out of 149 nippers. It was a stunning morning and it was great to see so many familiar faces back and loads of new nippers. 2 Page 2 CLUB TRAINING UPDATE BY HARI, CLUB TRAINING PERSON Our nippers and older surf athletes are on an exciting journey to gain confidence, knowledge, skills, new friendships and unforgettable experiences in the beach environment. Did you know that the same can apply to you as parents/caregivers? Whether you're new to the whole surf club scene, the water, or have many years experience, Surf Life Saving NZ offer training courses in lifeguarding, surf coaching, and surf officiating from beginner to super athlete level. All courses are delivered by trained facilitators who also double as experienced surf members. To show their support, Maranui will pay your course fees to attend any of these (other Clubs run a user pays system). Trained and raring to go! All training courses are normally run during the off-season. This is so you get the opportunity to apply your learnings during the summer season (unless you get injured!). Opposite, is an update on who has been upskilling themselves lately. Note: a full list of the club s surf coaches, lifeguards etc will be forthcoming. The best part about it all is being a role model to my kids and being at the beach and in the water every Sunday with them. Also the backup from the club in terms of training, support and enthusiasm is excellent with one of the strengths of the coaching team being the variety of skills and backgrounds everyone brings to Maranui. 3 Page 3 Having recently attended the Level 1 surf coach course a key reason for doing this was to help out and seek clarification of the rules. Advice for any new parents wanting to get involved is ask anyone if they need help, don t be shy. (Watson Irving Level 1 Surf Coach, dad to Sophie and Harry, and another all round nice guy). Out of all the roles at Maranui, coaching is by far my favourite role. There is nothing better than teaching and then watching a nipper master catching their first wave either on a board or body surfing, with a big grin on their face. Also having families work hard at getting their kids up to scratch with their swimming and returning the following season to smash the 200m time trial. (Jason Reid one of the bosses, has done every role in the Club including managing the Ocean Athletes, dad to Max and Lucy, and yep, he s an all round nice guy too). An additional Level 1 Surf Coach course is coming to a venue near you We received an overwhelming response to the Level 1 Surf Coach course that happened earlier this month. Unfortunately that date didn t suit everyone so our management team have arranged another one especially for you! You ve seen the s, and if you haven t registered yet, contact me ASAP on hirata.titcombe@gmail.com or Dates again - 2 and 3 Dec. Starts at 6pm-8:30pm. Venue change due to a clash with lifeguard training in our Clubroom this course will now be held at Houghton Valley School, 110 Houghton Bay Road, Houghton Bay. Confirmation details will be sent to all interested parents soon. Become a surf official Put simply, the Carnivals cannot run smoothly without these cool cats! We currently have 4 in the club but are on the lookout for more. 4 Page 4 MAYOR ACCEPTS PONTOONS AT ORIENTAL BAY New pontoons have been anchored into the sea in Oriental Bay beach for swimmers to enjoy. They were gifted to the city by the Oriental Bay Residents Group. Mayor Celia Wade-Brown accepted the gift on behalf of the City of Wellington. As the lifeguarding Club for this beach this season, Maranui showed a strong presence as part of the ceremony. A plaque was erected by the steps onto the beach marking the occasion. After the ceremony the Mayor decided to swim to the pontoon. She obviously couldn't do the swim without an escort from Maranui lifeguards so Marc Pulepule provided the escort to refresh at the same time. MARANUI CAPS AND RASHIES IMPORTANT: If you have any Maranui Surf Caps and or any Pink Vests at home, please return to the club asap. We are missing quite a few. WOO- HOO! MARANUI 358 points, Lyall Bay 217 points, Worser Bay 155 points, Titahi Bay 117 points, Paekakariki 84 points, Otaki 23 points, Levin- Waitarere 6 points.. Well done EVERYONE! 5 Page 5 ELATION ON GAINING THEIR LIFEGUARD AWARD Over 40 candidates were at the first Surf Exam held at Paekakariki SLSC on the 1 st November. The Surf Exam was performed differently this time with the Swim component examined separately and before the 1 st November exam. This Class (Surf Class 103) was designed for our Nippers that have gained their Surf Levels, Surf Lifesaving Certificate and who are still competing. The course recognises already built up surf knowledge and surf skills and focuses on the other parts of the Lifeguard Award course, therefore is a little shorter. This course was trial last year to great success. Jubilant and elated, the two girls pose in their newly issued red and yellow lifeguard uniforms. They have been allocated to patrol teams and are excited about donning the uniform and returning to Nippers in their capacity as Lifeguards.
