Maranui Surf Life Saving Club Newsletter No. 19 April 2016 Our Lifeline to our life guards, life members, members and families This story from the Cook Strait News sums up the great success of the Junior Surf and foreshadows the success of the Oceans 16 team. Streaks ahead of the competition By Sharnahea Wilson A group of keen young surf life savers splashed past the competition, finishing miles ahead in the Capital Coast Junior Surf Lifesaving Championships on Sunday. Maranui Surf Life Saving Club had a grand total of 95 competitors who managed to take out the competition for the fourth year running. Aged seven to 13, the dedicated athletes took part in four carnivals, starting with the event in Worser Bay on November 22. The group then competed at Lyall Bay and Otaki clubs before finishing on their home surf with 1756 points placing them 1066 points in front of second place getters Lyall Bay Surf Club. Maranui head coach Chris Mark said they had built the club around a strong sporting side and now it was paying off. We had nine first place getters out of 14 age groups. We are lucky to have some very good in-house competition when we train, he said. Chris said when the kids reached age 14 they had to be qualified life guards in order to compete. This gives them the opportunity to give back to the community. The Maranui Surf Club is now preparing for the Oceans 16 event held in Mount Maunganui next Thursday. Chris said five years ago the club didn t even wait place in the competition. Last year we placed in the top 10 and this year we are hoping to do even better with our 11 competitors. Over 700 competitors will take part in the four-day event and Chris said the surf life savers have to be at a certain level to compete Hi Everyone Another season has come to an end and it is with pride that I look back on the achievements of all our members over the season. It takes a lot of organising to have the club running smoothly for both patrols, nippers and sporting activities and I would like to thank all those involved. Watching everyone over the season working to improve their skills is reinforced by the horrible drowning statistics and makes it even more important to ensure we all do our bit to try and keep people safe in the water. I hope you all have a good winter and enjoy the change in focus for a while but as the seasons change again, I hope to see you all on the beach for another season of surf - in it for life! in the Oceans 16. Paula We made 26 finals last year and in each age group there are about 100 kids. To make a national final is a huge achievement, he said. Chris and the whole team at Maranui Surf Club were eager to see where they place in Mt Maunganui after their impressive win last weekend. See stories later in the newsletter that report on how well Maranui SLSC did at Oceans, Nationals and Junior Centrals.

2 SLSNZ POOL CHAMPS OCTOBER 2016 A meeting will be held in the club rooms on Wednesday 13th April at 7.00 pm If you think your swimmer, aged 10 yrs and over, may be interested, come along and find out what it is about and what it entails. Saturday 30 th April 6pm Maranui Café C ALLING A LL SWIMMERS The surf season may be ended but it is important for your fitness for next season to keep swimming over the winter months. One way is to join the Maranui Swimming Club which meets Friday nights 7.00 pm 8.00 pm BIG to MOORE WILSON S for the towels given to each member of the Oceans 16 Team

3 MARANUI CONTINUES ITS WINNING STREAK AT OCEANS16 More success has followed our Club since our emphatic 4 th win in a row of the Capital Coast Junior Surf Life Saving Championships. The Under 14 New Zealand Surf Life Saving Championships (commonly known as Oceans ) in March, saw 44 of our junior athletes converge on Mount Maunganui Main Beach where they joined over 800 junior athletes from 44 surf lifesaving clubs for four days of non-stop action! Maranui came 6 th club overall, bringing home 12 medals and making 65 finals! But getting to this event didn t just fall into any of our athlete s laps. It took a lot of sacrifice in terms of their time and commitment, a willingness to learn new skills or refine existing ones, take risks, and maintain a sense of humour (also applicable to their parents, siblings, and the management team)! A total of 51 training sessions over 6.5 months were planned to get our athletes to Oceans. Training started for most of them in late August 2015 and tapered off a week before the competition. Frequency of training started with one session a week gradually increasing to four times a week (including Sunday club), ranging from 1 to 2 hours (weather permitting). Sessions consisted of technical and practical training focused on events typically held at Oceans such as Run Swim Run, Surf race, Diamond, Board, and Relay events (including Beach Relay, Tube Rescue, Board Relay, Board Rescue, Mixed Grand Cameron). Huge congratulations to all of our athletes. They did the Club proud and we wish them well over the winter season. Congratulations also to our following medal winners: Individual Medal Winners: GOLD, U12 Mens Surf Race - Sam Brown GOLD, U13 Womens Run Swim Run - Sophie Irving SILVER, U13 Womens Beach Sprints - Taika Davis BRONZE, U12 Womens Run Swim Run - Tamrah Titcombe BRONZE, U12 Mens Diamond - Sam Brown BRONZE, U13 Womens Run Swim Run - Lucy Reid BRONZE U14 Mens Surf Race - Che Pulepule Team Medal Winners: GOLD, U12 Womens Board Relay - Tamrah Titcombe, Anna Medal winners: (L to R) Logan Philp, Hugo Blackwood, Sam Brown, Che Tirikatene, Holly Reynolds Pulepule, Chris Mark (Head Coach), Sophie Irving, Taika Davis, Lucy SILVER, U12 Mixed Grand Cameron - Tamrah Titcombe, Reid, Anna Tirikatene, Tamrah Titcombe, Holly Reynolds Logan Brown, Sam Brown, Anna Tirikatene, Hugo Blackwood, Holly Reynolds SILVER, U12 Mens Tube Rescue - Sam Brown, Logan Philp SILVER, U13 Womens Tube Rescue - Sophie Irving, Lucy Reid BRONZE, U12 Mens Board Relay - Sam Brown, Logan Philp, Hugo Blackwood If you think your athlete would like to give Oceans a go once they turn 10 years old here s some useful tips on what we look for: Good level of fitness especially swim fitness A can do attitude Commitment to train hard Camaraderie to do the best they can for themselves and their team mates Consistent attendance and results at all club junior events (carnivals). Some more facts about our performance at Oceans16: 44 athletes represented our club (up 11 from last year, made up of 25 under 14 year olds and 19 under 12 year olds) we entered a total of 475 individual and team events our athletes made 65 finals (up 24 from last year) our athletes achieved numerous and credible top 10 placings we came home with 12 medals (up 4 from last year) 3 gold, 4 silver, 5 bronze 7 individual medals 5 team medals. 4 4 COACHES CORNER SENIOR TEAM Crikey, it seems like an age since the last Coaches Corner and with the news letter moving to a quarterly publication I have a lot to try and recall and update. Trying to keep it brief is the biggest challenge. SURF CAMP The last Coaches Corner we were about to leave for Senior Surf Camp up at Mt Maunganui. The focus of camp was split into four main areas; fitness, skills and technique, mental toughness, and team building. We hit the pool and the ocean everyday taking advantage of the sun, and lack of wind. Unfortunately the surf was playing hide and seek but we still made the most of our time doing a variety of activities and sessions with the athletes able to debrief and feed back in the evenings. Overall the camp was a great success all athletes would like to do a repeat and I look forward to planning their next challenges. Maranui is lucky as we have standing invites from 3 other clubs Mt Maunganui, Midway and Fitzroy to join them as part of the camp, so we have options galore. Big thanks to Paula Wood who was Camp Mum and was just an awesome manager. BRING ON CAMP 2016/17, BIGGER, BETTER, TOUGHER. CENTRAL REGIONAL CHAMPS (CRCs) Next off the bat was Seniors Central Regional Champs (CRCs) at Waimarama in the Hawkes Bay in January. It was sunny, hot with a 1.0m to 1.5m swell. (CRCs) format was one day of intense racing. The plan was for two rounds of everything event followed by inter-area relays. The goal for the team was to get heaps of racing in to expand of race experience as we head for Nationals in March. Maranui had a team of 8 athletes and came away with 2 Gold, 2 silver and two bronze medals from Ish Perkins Banse, Che Pulepule, Liam Brown and Finn Speirs. Liam Receives Medal continued on page 5

5 continued from page 4 WHITEHORSE TROPHY For those who don t know the local Senior Capital and Coast competition is called the Whitehorse. It is a local mystery as to how it got that name so if anyone knows I would love to hear the history behind the name, anyway I digress. This year the white horse included IRB race points as well as the boats and canoe. With no IRB Race teams or canoe or boat, Maranui did extremely well placing fourth overall just behind Titahi Bay. This was a great achievement for our small team and an improvement on last year where we placed 6 th. What was really pleasing was all athletes scored points throughout the season contributing to our team s success. Well done team. NATIONALS Our last competition of the season was Nationals held from 17 th to the 20 th of March at Ohope beach in Whakatane. Maranui had a team of 12 athletes attend (including a masters athlete.). Day one was Masters, with our Club Chair Paula Wood competing. Paula was an inspiration kicking us off to great start winning silver in the women s (40-44) beach sprint causing a surprise by beating one of the favoured Wainui ladies. (YES!)Day two saw Maranui pick up its only medal, Gold in the U16 beach flags. Ishmael Perkins-Banse had an extremely exciting and tough competition with nearly being eliminate at 6 th to eventually coming through to top the U16 men; well done Ish. Maranui athlete made several finals with Emily Register and Tallulah O Neill making the U16 women s Surf Race and Run Swim Run finals, Rachael Wilson U19 women s Surf Race and Run Swim Run finals and Finn Speirs in the U19 Mens Run Swim Run Final. This year was particularly challenging with 4 athletes moving from U16 to U19 with a significant step up in competition. The other big challenge was the surf. The Saturday saw the swell build to large waves at about 8 deep and no real pauses. Finn and Liam had to redo their U19 Ironman heat after so many athletes missed the buoy in the swim leg due to big surf and the IRB could not tell who missed. On the last day the last event finals were cancelled due safety, including U16 Ironman and Ladies Diamond and U19 Iron woman. I was very proud of those who swam in their surf race finals on the last day it was big and hairy and you were up for the challenge. Big thanks to Paula Wood and Carrie Speirs who were the team managers covering the U16 and U19 arenas ladies you really helped ensure the athletes were where they were meant to be. Big thanks to Mark Ford who was our team photographer getting some awesome photos and a big thanks to Robyn Wilson who organised our accommodation. All the help given by parents is what helps each athlete and the team succeed. Paula Wood Silver continued on page 6

6 From the Archives: Evening Post, Volume CXXVIII, Issue 85, 7 October 1939, Page 22 continued from page 5 Liam Brown - Surf is getting bigger LOOKING FORWARD Finn Speirs Surf is getting bigger Rachael Wilson At the end of each season a review is held with the athletes. It is an opportunity for them to reflect on the season and give feedback which is then used to contribute to the program for the following season. This is an important factor in an athlete s development and growth. They are expected to take on more responsibility, and conduct themselves to our values and vision. Next Year is so exciting. 11 new athletes coming on board into U16 s and Nationals in Christchurch, hosted by New Brighton SLSC. We are starting to form a management team to help with logistics and planning, and as always parental help will be crucial to our campaign. Planning is underway for the training program. I can t wait to get back into it after our break. Vision To be the best that we can be Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid Albert Einstein MARANUI CLUB What is claimed to be the most outstanding season in the history of the Maranui Surf and Life-Saving Club is recorded in the club's twentyeighth annual report, to be presented at the annual meeting next Thursday evening. The club membership is 171, including 71 active senior and 17 junior members. Awards gained during the year include 9 elementary certificates, 9 proficiency certificates, 9 bronzy medallions, 13 surf medallions, and two first-class instructors' certificates. On the competitive side, the season was most successful. The club won five New Zealand championships, which has never before been accomplished. These were the Nelson Shield (senior rescue and resuscitation)-, William Henry Memorial (junior rescue and resuscitation), senior surf relay, beltman's title, and individual surf race. In addition the club won six of the seven Wellington championships, four of the six West Coast (North Island) titles, and fiye other life-saving events. Of 32 events competed in during the season, the club obtained 20 first and 6 second placings. Besides the usual patrols, members operated at Day's Bay and Otaki. The surf boat was used extensively, and is being replaced with a new boat of the latest type, now building in New Zealand. Club teams won the B grade provincial water-polo championship, and the Peck Shield harbour swim. During last winter, club teams also won the B grade men's basketball championship, and the B grade table tennis championship.

7 JUNIOR CENTRALS 2016 The inaugural Junior Centrals was held at Oakura beach over Wellington Anniversary weekend. Junior Centrals encompasses a region extending as far south as Wellington, east to Napier and west to New Plymouth with about 24 Central Surf Clubs included. Unfortunately there was the Wellington Long Course Regional swim meet and a surf camp organised with the Mount Surf Club already scheduled for this same weekend. Maranui had checked with SLSNZ about having this event changed to an alternative date but this was overruled and in the end, Maranui was unable to send a full Team. Fortunately, through favourable change of circumstances and accommodation provided by a past member; Carla Russell, Che and Asha Pulepule were able to represent Maranui and compete. They were our only two competitors. The programme was a full day of competing in sunny, slight southerlies with a clean and consistent 2-2.5m swell. High tide was in the morning and so the programme started with Team events. Team Manager, Marc Pulepule had asked to allow Clubs to combine members to enter Teams (where placings will earn no medals). This was permitted by the Event Referee. Maranui paired with Worser Bay entered a Team in the U14 Women Tube Rescue and U14 Men Board Rescue events. Asha was paired with Grace Mellsop and Che with Neo-Tama Hargraves. The U14 Women gained second place in the final through a massive swim by Asha to get to the buoys fourth and then the pairing caught a monster wave on the return to propel them to second through the gates. The U14 Men Board Rescue was equally exciting where they had made the final and placed fifth. Surf conditions and the waves was picking up as the tide was going out. Individually Che (U14) and Asha (U11) gained 4 medals each. Asha only entered into water events and Che did not enter the Surf Race and placed fourth in the Men U14 Board Race after falling into a hole. It was quite a gruelling day with heats, quarters and semis in some events. Che: 2 nd Run-Swim-Run 2 nd Beach Flags 2 nd Diamond 3 rd Sprints Asha: 2 nd Diamond 2 nd Surf Race 2 nd Board Race 3 rd Run-Swim-Run Che and Asha 4 medals each As a result of their efforts, Maranui placed 6 th Overall. The overall winner was East End SLSC. There were 20 out of the 24 clubs represented. The wave of the day was during the Women U11 Board Race Wed, 13 April Meeting about Pool Champs pm at the Club House Sat, 30 April Senior Prize Giving 6.00 pm at Maranui Café August 2016 AGM October 2016 Pool Champs 2016 From now until next season starts: Swimming, Swimming and more Swimming And in case you missed it check this story out about a very sporting competitor at the New Zealand Surf Life Saving Championships, at Ohope Beach in Whakatane Sporting-save-surf-life-saving-girl-stops-to-help-fellowcompetitor-in-distress rounding the second buoy and a set was building to a whooper 2-2.5m wave. Asha and Cadence (Otaki) catching this wave were again lifted skyward by a reflection wave a further 1m, freefalling off the top of the lip to shoot down a clean face and ride it all the way to the beach. Asha was asked how she felt about being on that monster wave; her reply was I survived
