Presidents Report Grant A little bit of flying and a little bit of workshop time this month have at least kept the thoughts off the winter weather... well for the most part that is. I've had some long overdue maintenance to catch up on and I'm pleased to report that I now have my Cessna Ag Wagon back in the air after more than 6 months lay off, plus my Hangar 9 Mustang now has new elevator hinges and is ready to fly again. Both of these required critical maintenance that was keeping them out of the air, do make sure you check out your aircraft regularly to ensure they are of a good airworthiness standard. I've also started repairs on my 4m Blanik glider that suffered a heavy arrival back at Christmas time that punched the undercarriage up inside and broke a couple of formers. This is nearly back together again now, so all in all, not too bad a month really. We kicked off July s flying with a great day out at Lake D flying float planes, the weather forecast didn't sound to be that promising, but the day turned out to be nearly perfect. With overcast conditions and no wind nor rain until the very last part of the day, we had pretty much all had enough by 2pm... that was except for Frazer who turned up at the last minute just as we were packing up. He did manage to get one flight in before the rain set in. Sadly the rest of the month hasn't been so successful, with our themed Club biplane flying day being washed out twice. We tried over two consecutive weekends to run this event, but as 4
Murphy's Law would have it the weather was fine through the week and wet on the Sundays. We did have an impromptu get together on a Saturday, but that was just Brad and Gordon itching to fly their Bipes! So it's third time lucky...this month we are going to have another stab at Biplane day, come hell or high water. I can't have the weather beating us completely, so we will have another try at getting a big gathering of biplanes all in one place at one time on the 12th! Also this month we have two other events scheduled for the club. Firstly, another float plane day out at Lake D on the 26th of August. Warren s Cub on the way back in to shore, courtesy of Grant This will give us another chance to wash our aeroplanes in the lake. That same weekend Hobby Hangar and the Heli guys will be running a Helicopter Fun Fly event at our club field across both Saturday and Sunday (25th-26th). Club members will still be welcome to fly aircraft, however you will need to work in with the helicopter activities and share the field appropriately. Over at the Cambridge Model Aero Club, they have had a bit of a reorganization with Wayne Cartwright volunteering to take over the secretary roll. Wayne is keen to spark a bit more life into the Cambridge flying scene, so together with Hamilton we have come up with a reciprocal flying deal that will benefit both our clubs. Cambridge will host a club open day once a month, typically on the 1st Sunday of each month, this will be published in our calendar of events and on the web site calendar. All Hamilton members are invited to fly at Cambridge on those days, likewise Cambridge club members are welcome to attend our 5
own club days, float plane days and any other events we hold. This should be a great opportunity for everyone to fly at a different club site on a regular basis and it especially caters for those that are interested in a change of flying fields for a day at no extra cost. Plus it's always great to mingle with other clubs and Pilots, the first CMAC day is Sept 2nd. July s Club night saw a good turn out with a number of members answering the call to bring along their winter projects or parts thereof. Most impressive project of the night was Stan s giant Spitfire which he had the beginnings of the Fuselage at the meeting. Other projects included Jose s Dornier Floatplane which is now well under way and Frazer s large Tail planes for his latest Scale Aerobatic model. All up a very interesting evening of show and tell. Augusts Club night is going to be our Annual Quiz night. This always proves to be a fun and loud evening, so get to studying up on all things aviation and we ll see you there for an exciting evening s entertainment with Mikey Wilson coming all the way over from Tauranga to be your host and Quiz master for the night. One of our members arrived at the field mid-week a couple of weeks back to find one of the standup tables straddling the drain. We re not too sure just how it got to be there, maybe a strong gust of wind played tumble weed with it, but it definitely was strange!! Okay, well that s all I have for you this month. Hopefully I will see some of you at the quiz night or at the field and as always, remember... Safe flying is NO Accident! Grant 6
Club Captains Report Lyndon Unfortunately Lyndon was very busy this month. Excuses in the September bulletin.. 7
Seagull Models Gypsy Moth Alan Rowson I have just finished building the Seagull Models Gypsy Moth. This model has a wingspan of 66.9in and a length of 58.7in and weighs around 10.6lbs (4.8kg). I am powering it with a ASP120 FS and this motor fitted in nicely with no cutting anything from the cowl except at the bottom. The wings are fully rigged and when pulling apart there are transport frames that are placed on the inner part of the wing. This model falls into the Large Model category for flying at their events. All we need now is some fine days for the test flight. Nice job Alan, looks good. 8
Calmato Reborn Bruce Pickering A couple of months ago Rex Anderson had an unfortunate mishap with his Calmato 60. The damage was severe, wrecking the fuselage from the nose to the wing trailing edge, and tearing a large chunk out of the wing. After thinking about the work involved in repairing it, he offered the wreckage to me, since I had earlier expressed sorrow at the idea of dumping it. Upon getting it home fittingly in a black rubbish bag I tipped the contents on the floor and sorted out all the bits. Fortunately, Rex had collected everything from the crash site, so I was able to assemble parts for one side and spot glue them together with CA. Using this as a template, it was easy to cut out two new sides. The wing was straightforward; I clamped the leading edge to a straight edge and simply replaced broken and missing pieces as needed. With some artistic license I mounted the engine inverted and reshaped the nose. Fortunately, the canopy has rather square lines, so it didn t take long to make a mould 9
to pull a new one. Finally, the model was re-covered with Hobby King film and was ready to fly. What was left of the wing, ouch! I have often wondered whether repairs are strong enough. Well, a couple of days ago I performed an unintentional stress test. I was flying an inverted circuit, and as the model was slowly descending I kept telling myself, Don t pull up; don t pull up! Unfortunately, I wasn t wearing my hearing aids and all I heard was, Pull up; pull up! So I did, and performed a tight, fast half loop. Owing to the astronomical alignment of the planet at that particular moment, I was rewarded with a resounding whooomph! as the wheels connected with terra firma, 10 metres from the roadside fence. It bounced about thirty metres into the air and glided over the road to land out of sight 20 metres into the paddock across the road. 10
Fuselage Those sturdy little undercarriage legs had taken the full impact and survived well sort of. They were a little distorted and the nose wheel had remained at the impact site. Apart from that, left behind were two propeller blades and half a spark plug, replaced with a spade full of peat and cow dung. An hour s work had everything restored, ready to fly again. I am reborn! 11
Building Tip of the month: Every now and again I use a Blind Nut in my construction or as it s often known, a Tee Nut. These nuts come with sharp feet that get squeezed into the wood to hold them in place. The trouble is that sometimes wear and tear or pushing too hard on them can pop them out of place, usually into a space that s impossible to get to. Gluing them in place works sometimes, but the other day I came up with a solution that may work in some circumstances and it s so simple...just add a couple of captive wood screws and job done! 12
Congratulations, 20 years and Counting. I was cleaning out some old paper work the other day and came across a club membership list that we used to publish in the bulletin annually. Thanks to privacy acts and regulations we no-longer support this practice. Anyway, I thought it appropriate to congratulate all of those on that list that have been and still are members of HMAC. Twenty years is a long time and most of the following guy s have been with us much longer than that! Rex Anderson, Rex Bain, Graeme Bradley, Frazer Briggs, Laurie Chrystall, Ken Couling, Graeme Duncan, Grant Finlay, Ken Foster, Jack Godfrey, Alwyn Graves, Brian Howser, Ashley keeling, Gary Mitchell, Terry O Dwyre, & Mike Sutton. Thanks guy s for continuing to share your model flying experiences with the Hamilton Club. 13
