3 Swimming pool owners know that pools are great for relaxation, quality family time, and health and fitness. But did you know that the history of swimming pools dates back thousands of years with many interesting facts? Here are 10 fun swimming pool facts that you may be surprised to learn. Ancient drawings and paintings found in Egypt depict people swimming dating back to 2500 BCE. The first heated swimming pool was built by Gaius Maecenas of Rome, a friend to Caesar Augustus, the first emperor of Rome. The first swimming club was the Maidstone Swimming Club, established in Kent, England in response to people drowning in the River Medway. The Titanic was the first ocean liner to have a swimming pool. Open Water Swim Busselton 12 th November The Swimming WA Open Water Swimming (OWS) Series is the largest series of OWS events in Australia. The OWS Series has become an icon of the Western Australian sporting calendar, attracting amateur and professional swimmers from age nine to ninety-nine. Now in its 10th year, the series includes 14 events conducted across Perth and regional WA from October to March. Register now for the Busselton Open Water Swim and choose from 500m, 1.25km, 2.5km or 5km swims. Bunnings Sausage Sizzle Sunday 12 th November (Same day as the Open Water Swim) We have been given the opportunity to fundraise at Bunnings. 4 Swimming has been part of the Olympics since The world s largest pool, according to the Guinness World Records, was built in Algarrobo, Chile in December The Alfonso del Mar Seawater Pool is 1013 metres long. Adventure World Friday 15 th December We have a Coach booked to take swimmers for a fantastic day at Adventure World. Departing at 7.00am from Georgiana Molloy Anglican School Joseph Drive Yalyalup. In Brussels, Belgium, the Nemo 33 is the deepest indoor pool in the world with a depth of 34 metres. It s kept at a very comfortable 30 degrees celsius so divers do not need wet suits to protect them from hypothermia. The turbo pump on space shuttle s main engines are so powerful they could drain an average swimming pool in 25 seconds. Australia builds more domestic swimming pools (per capita) than any other country in the world. Swimming is what Australian s do best. We have won more Olympic medals from Swimmering that any other sport: Ian Thorpe with 9 medals and Leisel Jones with 9 medals. We have secured a group area to ensure a nice shady spot. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult on the day (for those parents who can t attend this may mean that you ask another parent to be guardian of your child for the day.) The cost of this excursion is $60.00 per person and includes return coach travel and park entry. Children are asked to bring their own food and drinks for the day or money to purchase from the various on-site food outlets. Please see the Adventure World website if you would like to find out about the Aqua Cash wristband which is a safe and convenient way to load money onto a wristband and avoid having to carry cash around. If your child or children would like to be a part of this day please Julie: c.p@ by FRIDAY 17 th November and we will then send an invoice that can be paid online. In the past we have been able to take siblings with us and depending on numbers we are hoping that we will be able to offer this to you again this year. Once we have all our numbers in and confirmed (please note that monies need to be paid to be a confirmed attendee) then we will advise regarding siblings. Coach will depart Adventure World at 4pm with arrival in Busselton estimated to be 7.30pm.

Busselton Freight Rising Sport Star Awards Busselton Freight is the major sponsor for the Busselton Freight Rising Sports Star. This started in July 2008 when the Company wanted a project where they could put back into the community. Each month sporting clubs and individuals can nominate a person they consider to have the ability to enhance their sporting achievements. A selection committee of 8 well known sporting identities in the community select a monthly winner who are then presented with a monthly award. The monthly winner receives $200 from BFS. At the end of the 12 month period at a gala presentation an overall Rising Star is awarded a $2000 scholarship donated by Busselton Freight. We are very proud of our Diamond Squad swimmers Hannah Greenfield and Tessa Viljoen who were named Rising Sport Stars for February and June and attended the annual presentation dinner in August.

11 TIPS FOR A TOP NOTCH TURN: 1.Remember to keep fast hand speed into the wall on your turn Officials Group Short Course Pentathlon 11 th June After that leading hand hits the wall, your whole body follows into a tight tuck 3. Using the momentum from that turn try to get fast feet onto the wall For the Pentathlon, competitors are required to swim in 5 events: Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, Freestyle and an Individual Medley. 400m & 800m events are optional additions. A great meet for Tiahni Baggetta, Ben Garcia, Madison Stephens, Cara Viljoen, Tessa Viljoen, Chelsea White and Taye Wright. Fifteen PB s for the day. Time Trial 29 th May Use the wall to snap into a tight streamline From: Sports Scientist Jess Cornoes It has been a while since our last time trial. We have had difficulty getting a day on the calendar that does not clash with other events. Our next time trial is on Sunday 10 th December.

12 Follow us on Facebook: Fitness Squad GMAS Swimming Club Thank you for your patience while the indoor pool has been closed. Our Fitness Squads will resume next week on Monday 6 th November and Tuesday 7 th November. If you know anyone interested, there are spaces available in these squads. Backstroke Clinic 29 th October 2017 Six GMAS Swimming Club swimmers were invited to attend a Backstroke clinic held at the Murray Leisure Centre in Pinjarra on Sunday 29 th October. Isabelle Triffitt, Cameron Blakers, Ben Simpson, Zane Kelly, Maddison Stephens and Chelsea White all came with enthusiasm and eagerness to learn. The clinic was led by Ryan Evernden from Formidable Strength and Conditioning Ryan is a Multiple Open National finalist, has coached athletes to Open Nationals (Pool & Open Water), Coached Multiple Rottnest Channel Swim athletes, and has 8 Years of Swimming Coaching Experience. Ryan was assisted by Mike Warnock also a hugely successful and experienced coach from Golden West Dolphins Swim Club. Other coaches from GMAS (Kate), Pinjarra, Bridgetown and Golden West Dolphins attended to help out on the day, and learn from Ryan and Mike. During the two hour clinic we broke down backstroke into its important components and slowly put it back together, resulting in an improved technique by all swimmers. The swimmers all had a great time, learned a lot and met some new friends from other clubs around the South West. A huge thank you to Ryan, Mike, Pinjarra Swim Club and the South West Region for organising the clinic and for our six dedicated swimmers who attended. Kate also learned a lot and consolidated her backstroke knowledge which we are already putting into practice at training for all our squads.
