How did your program do against your expectations and that of the listed statistics? Congratulations to the swimmers and coaches selected to represent the EAST Team right after the 2014 Canadian Age Group Championships in Winnipeg. Thirty-six Ontario swimmers will join forces with twelve Quebec and Nova Scotia swimmers to take on the WEST Team from Manitoba through to British Columbia. 3 Snapshot of Program Development & Schedule Updates : Swim Canada s (and Swim Ontario) schedule and future programming is not 100% finalized as of yet. please expect some change to dates and programming structure as we move forward through the next months. New long course programming initiative to fall in line with Swimming Canada s HP Director s request for a long course competitions strategy after December across the country. Shaping the *Senior Competitive Season High Performance Director John Atkinson has stated the following as a method to shape the behaviour for improved Performance Outcomes. September to December SCM racing LCM racing January to August. Training Focus No resting/no Taper/No Shaving during the season Two Tapers per season but you can multiple race on one taper (summer) A world-class focus must be developed and systemically rehearsed over several preparation cycles The rationale for a focused LCM racing strategy is based on research from Europe and the USA regarding the number of LC competitions needed to give athlete the best chance for success. European Swimming has a shorter SCM season and a much longer LCM season. Australia has a LCM focus year round with some SCM racing during their winter season. In my opinion LCM racing is critical to successful LCM outcomes more so than LCM training. I have believed this for the majority of my coaching career. LCM training is beneficial however not to the extent of LCM racing. I believe a minimum of three LCM competitions but a reliable number of six to nine Quality Racing Opportunities (swim Meets) to have a reliable performance outcome. Thank you to Andrew Craven pointing me to an article by USA swimming who have a SCY focus September-December (November Grand Prix SCY and the December National Championships SCY) and then a LCM Focus January-August featuring LCM Grand Prix, Speedo Series and Trials/Championships. (Excerpt from USA Swimming HP Consultant Dan McCarthy) Many programs across the USA have regularly placed athletes on the National Team and Jr National Teams despite having little or no access to long course training however a study during In 10 of 12 Olympic events, the athlete who swam the most LCM races finished in the top four of the finals. - In 8 of the 12 events, the athlete who swam the fewest races finished in the bottom four spots of the finals. - In 10 of the 12 events, the athlete who swam the most races earned a spot on the US Olympic Team.
4 - In 3 of the 12 events, the athlete that swam the fewest races earned a spot on the US Olympic Team (note- the swimmers who swam the fewest number of races that made the US Olympic Team were very experienced National Team Members) In March, the Swim Ontario Performance Coaches Committee, a sub-committee of the Sport Development Committee (Don Burton; Sean Baker; Kevin Thorburn; Murray Drudge; Ben Titley and Darin Muma- Chair Dean Boles) met to discuss a Competition Strategy for improved Long Course Metre performances. The outcome of the meeting was in a direction to resurrect the Eastern Cup concept with Quebec and Ontario forming an LCM competition strategy. Beginning in January Quebec will host the first Eastern Cup at Claude Robiliard Centre in Montreal with the reciprocal competition in Toronto January This strategy will kick off Quality Long Course Racing (LC Heats and Finals). Swim Canada have just made fundamental adjustments to the Eastern/Western Canadians with LCM racing as a focus in February, while Canadian Sport Institutions (CIS Swimming) have a proposal on the table to have Long Course racing at the CIS Championships to commence the season. Ontario Swimming Academy (OSA) is a camp deliverable program using the CSI O, HPC Ontario personnel in a set camp curriculum designed to deliver two separate 3-day camps, Monday- Saturday each week in designated weeks. Identification and selection of athletes yet to be determined. For more information contact Dean Boles.
