Highlands Ranch Seahawks North MOUNTAIN HIGH SWIM LEAGUE SUMMER 2018

A LETTER FROM THE HRCA COACHES Welcome to the Highlands Ranch Seahawks Summer Swim Team established in 1986! You are about to become an integral member of the largest, most visible component of the Highlands Ranch Community Association s Swim Program. We strive to create an environment where our swimmers may develop into complete athletes both individually and as a team. We believe the physical, mental, and emotional challenges they overcome and the personal relationships they develop will prepare them for their lives ahead. Both the Highlands Ranch Summer Swim Teams (North and West) are members of the Mountain Hi Swim League (MHSL). MHSL consists of 24 teams divided into four divisions according to team size and strength. We compete in the most competitive: A-Division (North) and the least competitive: D-Division (West). Team scores are kept, event distances are challenging, and stroke rules are actively enforced. In our North team, relays are populated by the fastest swimmers and in the West team, all swimmers will get a chance to swim in a relay, regardless of time. There are two time-qualifying meets at the end of the season and athletes can qualify for these meets throughout the regular season. We have teams in the two divisions because this allows us to better meet the needs of a very large group of young swimmers with great diversity in their personal needs and skill levels. Both teams have many benefits to swimmers and their families. Seahawks North is a good team for swimmers who are really competitive and have been swimming for a while. Seahawks West is good for swimmers who are looking for a more laid back environment or who are newer to the sport. In any case, we prefer that the swimmers and their parents decide which team best meet their individual and family needs. The coaches will gladly provide technical insights and recommendations helpful in selecting a team. Just ask! Information about the team will come in many ways. This is our 8 th year using our Team Unify website, Please familiarize yourself with it! We must emphasize that you are responsible for information contained on this website and in the mass s distributed by your Head Coach. Please pay particular attention to the practice schedules and locations. They vary depending upon team needs, aquatics programming, and the pool facilities available. We hope all of you have a fun and successful summer experience. Whether you are at the elite level or just starting out, swimming offers some very valuable life skills. Let s all work together to make the summer 2018 great! Thank you, Your HRCA Coaches 1

HIGHLANDS RANCH SEAHAWKS PHILOSOPHY It is important to have an understanding of the foundation and philosophy of any team you join. These are the core values and ideals that define the Highlands Ranch Seahawks and are what we use to make decisions and guide us through our summer season. Please take the time to become familiar with them so that as a team (swimmers, coaches, and parents), we can ensure we are adhering to these values and in turn, are a unified and strong team. 1. There is NO substitute for hard work All swimmers must invest time and effort into this sport. Each swimmer s success comes down to how much effort and hard work THEY put into it. There are no short cuts to accomplishing goals; it s all about doing the work. 2. EVERY Athlete Counts We strongly believe that each and every athlete deserves attention and support. We must be concerned with the improvement and attitude of every team member. If we do this, we will raise the standard of our entire team, making it stronger and faster. If at any point you feel that we, as coaches, have lost sight of this value, please bring it to the Head Coach s attention immediately. 3. Our foundation is FUNDAMENTALS We keep returning to basics. Practicing poor stroke technique is not an option. This may mean that in the middle of practice you will see coaches switch gears and go back to drill work. 4. Winning is not just being #1 There are many different types of success in swimming. Getting a blue ribbon, getting a personal best time, or winning a swim meet are all great achievements. However, our main goal is to see improvement in each and every swimmer throughout the season. With everyone working hard and accomplishing their own goals, we will become a stronger team. 5. Communication is KEY We strongly believe in effective and open communication. We encourage all swimmers and parents to bring any questions, comments, or concerns to the coaches attention as soon as they arise. This way, we can take care of small issues before they become big issues. 6. Fun! Fun! Fun! We want all of our swimmers to love the sport of swimming and have a positive experience on our teams. While there is no substitute for hard work, there is also no substitute for good, oldfashioned FUN. If everyone works hard by maintaining focus and good listening skills, we will all get to play hard too! 2

SEAHAWKS NORTH GENERAL INFORMATION 1. About the Seahawks North team The Seahawks North team is our competitive swim team, designed for those swimmers who desire a more competitive experience while still developing their swimming skills. Ultimately, the choice to join the North team should be based on coaches recommendation, swimmer s desire, and family needs. Any questions on placement should be directed towards the Head Coach. 2. Minimum Requirements In order to be on the Seahawks North team, swimmers need to be able to swim a minimum 75 yards freestyle with side-breathing, 75 yards backstroke, and 25 yards of either breaststroke or butterfly with at least one legal component. All new swimmers to the team will need to try-out prior to registering unless they have been given an exempt pass. 3. Registration Fees The activity fee for the season is $300 for members and $355 for guests to HRCA. This price applies for a family with one swimmer registering. If a family has multiple swimmers, the price for each swimmer is 5% off the original price ($300/swimmer and $355/swimmer respectively). There is also a $12 league fee per swimmer, which is included in the registration cost. Full payment is due at the time of registration. Credit cards are accepted for your convenience. Refunds are handled on a case-by-case basis according to HRCA standard policies and procedure. If a full refund is warranted, a nominal service fee will be retained to cover administrative costs. 4. Communication Getting information to the families of about 250 swimmers presents quite a challenge. We will use several methods to get information to you: a. This information packet. b. The Seahawks North TeamUnify website. This website contains the team calendar, the coaches addresses, the practice group descriptions, and pool locations for our away meets. Information is updated frequently so please check it often! You should bookmark this website for quick access. c. Mass or blast s from both the Head Coach and the Parent Volunteer Coordinators. If you are not receiving these s within the first week of practice, please contact the Head Coach immediately!! This will be the most common form of communication since it is the best way to provide you with updated information quickly and frequently. Please provide us with an address that you check often! 3

IMPORTANT NAMES & CONTACT INFORMATION Head Coach Blake Rider Assistant Coaches Deb Slavec Darren Slotnick Anna Keller Ali Sensintaffar Maggie Mather Parent Volunteer Coordinator Amy Cimbura Assistant Volunteer Coordinators Jonie Friend & Heidi Town Dryland Coach Becky Black Coached Aquatics Coordinator Rachel Lyon (303) Competitive Age Groups 6 & Under & Under The swimmer s age as of June 1, 2018 will determine the age group that the swimmer competes in during the season. Please note that swimmers may be assigned to mixed-age relays. 6. Practice Requirements To be successful in swimming, athletes must put in hard work at practice to improve technique, stamina, and overall ability. Swimmers are expected to practice at least 3 times per week, unless excused by the Head Coach for an extenuating circumstance. If you fail to make 3 practices, you will not be entered into the meet that Saturday. Swimmers should arrive to their scheduled practice about 15 minutes early to get ready and take care of their personal needs (caps, goggles, etc.). This is to ensure that they are in the water on time to get a full practice. Swimmers who are 10 minutes late or more will be asked to leave practice as it is disruptive and they will not be getting the proper warm-up they require. Swimmers need to meet with the coaches DRY and ready to work hard and HAVE FUN! When practice is over, swimmers are expected to pick up and store the equipment. 7. Swim Meet Event Sign-Up Sign-up for your swimmer s events will be done on the TeamUnify website and all entries are due the Tuesday before a meet by 11:59pm. If your swimmer is not signed up by this deadline, your swimmer will not swim in the meet. NO EXCEPTIONS! This is to ensure that each swimmer is accountable for signing up on time and so that we can get the entries completed and sent to the opposing team. The event sign-up for each meet in the regular season will open 4

up within the first week of the pre-season and so we encourage you to sign-up for meets you plan on attending in advance. If you would like your swimmer to be considered for relays (Medley at the beginning of the meet, Freestyle at the end), please indicate this in the comments section when signing up. We encourage every swimmer to put down that they would like to be considered for relays! We want to have as many swimmers as possible compete on a relay (these are worth the most points at meets). Relays will be made by the Head Coach with the input of the Assistant Coaches. Relays are a privilege and are constructed by taking times, attitude, and work ethic of the swimmers into account. If your swimmer is in a relay and leaves the meet early causing us to scratch the relay, they may be ineligible to swim relays for the rest of the season based on the Head Coach s discretion. 8. Job Sign-Up (for Parent Volunteers) Sign-up for your volunteering positions will now be done on the TeamUnify site just like you sign up for your swimmer s events. This sign-up will also be due the Tuesday before a meet by 11:59pm. Parents are expected to sign-up for at least 3 volunteer shifts for the summer. However, we encourage parents to sign-up for as many as they are able to! It takes about 90 volunteers to run a home meet and so we need as much help as we can get. Volunteering is a fun way to meet other swim families and to be apart of our Seahawks community. Since each meet has two shifts, you can sign-up for one shift at three separate meets, or you can work the entire meet to count for two shifts, plus one more meet. Please note that the Parent Volunteer Coordinator may ask you to sign-up for an additional shift if we need more volunteering help. More information about how to sign-up on TeamUnify will be provided via during the first week of the pre-season. 9. Scoring and Awards For individual event and for relays, swimmers score points which are added together to get a team score for the meet. The team at the end of the meet with the most points wins. Swimmers who are disqualified (DQ d) will receive no points and do not place in their event. Swimmers who swim in 6 & Under events do not get disqualified and as such receive no points for their events. The ribbons are awarded by event: 1 st 6 th place will receive ribbons. Ribbons will be placed in the swimmers folders and will be available to pick up before or after practice NO EARLIER than the Wednesday following the meet. These folders can be found in the brown bins on deck indoor pool. 10. Disciplinary Problems The steps for handling disciplinary problems are as follows: a. The coaches will discuss the problem with the swimmers involved and make every effort to resolve the problem (the Head Coach will be notified of the issue) b. The Head Coach will discuss the problem with the swimmers involved and make every effort to resolve the situation. c. If problem continues and the Head Coach deems it necessary, the swimmer's parents will be notified. d. If it becomes apparent that further disciplinary action is necessary, the coaches will implement the policies set forth by the HRCA. 5

These first two weeks are used to get back into swim shape and to assess all swimmers to determine which group they will be practicing in. During this time, the 3-practices a week rule does not apply as we understand that some swimmers are still in school. However, we highly recommend attending as many practices as they can, since that will help get the swimmers back into shape as well help the coaches better place the swimmer in the correct group. If there are any changes to the schedule (i.e. holidays, inclement weather, events, etc.) a reminder will be sent out by the Head Coach and it will also be communicated in person. During the regular season, coaches will be continuing to work on drills and technique. However, they will also begin to include sets, racing strategies, and other competitive swimming skills. Again, we highly recommend that your swimmer attend as many practices as possible. This is to maximize technique work and to increase strength and endurance as much as possible. Please keep in mind that some groups swim outdoors for practice and so make sure to apply sunscreen about 20 minutes before practice! Practice Groups Swimmers will be divided into different practice groups based on both age and ability. 12 DRY LAND PRACTICES What is Dry Land? Exercise that is performed out of the pool, intended for the purpose of improving swimming ability. Dry land is highly beneficial for swimmers because it develops a lot more strength than in the pool training. It also creates muscle balance by training muscle groups not commonly used in the repetitive movements of swimming in a pool. By training your less used muscles and creating a more balanced body, it also can help to prevent injuries. Dry Land Information Coach Becky Black will be taking over our dry land training. Both Seahawks North and Seahawks West teams can attend. Any swimmer can attend either day or time! This additional practice is not mandatory but highly recommended. This activity is at no extra cost! It is included with your registration fee. Dry land practice will be held Park (we will all meet outdoor pool and walk over to the park together) and will be Tuesday mornings from 9:30-10:30am.
