1 RED DEER MARLINS SUMMER SWIM CLUB April 2015 Newsletter Volume 26; Issue 1 website: reddeermarlins@outlook.com President`s Message 2014 ASSA Provincial Champions Welcome back to another season of summer swimming! For those of you that are new to the club, I look forward to meeting you, and answering any questions you may have about the club. For those that are returning for another season, I can t wait to visit with you, and work along side you at the various swim meets this summer. The RDMSC enjoyed their most successful season ever by winning the 2014 ASSA Provincial Championship! This was a tremendous achievement, and was made possible through the commitment and dedication by the swimmers, coaches, and parents. A large part of our success over the last few years has been our coaching staff. This years staff is another strong group of committed coaches that will make swimming both fun and challenging. The coaches for the various groups will be introduced in May at the first two swims, and also at our Spring AGM. Once you know which coach your swimmer will be working with, please take the time to introduce yourself, and get to know the coach. Here are some early important dates for May & June: May 1 st First swim for returning swimmers May 3 rd Introductory Swim Sessions for all swimmers May 13 th Spring AGM & Information Session for New Parents June 5&6 Red Deer Swim Meet *Please go to our website ( for a complete list of swim meets & social events for Our club wouldn t be possible without the many volunteers needed at our social events and swim meets. Please volunteer your time when you can, and consider becoming an official. It is a great way to learn more about the sport, and get involved. Fundraising is also a key component to our clubs survival. Please visit our website to view the many fundraising opportunities for this summer looks to be another great year of swimming from our 100 swimmers! New skills will be learned, and new friends will be made while hanging out at the pool. I look forward to seeing all of you at the pool this summer, and making your Marlins experience a fun one! 2 Coaching Committee - Programming Welcome to the 2015 summer season for the Red Deer Marlins. With our new cap of 100 swimmers and our preregistration process, we offered to our returning membership, has set us off to a great start this season. There will be an initial assessment day on May 3 at the Michener Center from 12-3pm. Please see the website for your swimmers assessment time. There is a continued assessment period from May 4 - May 15. This is the time that the coaches will be assessing the athletes to which squad they belong with. There can be progression throughout the season to another group however we try to place the athletes so they progress with squad mates so this isn't a necessity. The main assessment will be with the 12 and unders. These groups will be placed to like ability and age if at all possible. It is imperative that the athletes ability dictates the placings for athlete development and progression for the season. We are unable to accommodate family convenience to keep the quality of the program intact. The athletes are placed into preliminary groupings based on last year s abilities or assumed ability. All groups will likely change thru the assessment period. The preliminary groupings have been posted on the website. It is best if you have any concerns about the preliminary placings that you allow the assessment period to progress and the coaches to do their jobs and place your child thru the process. Before the season begins any coaching or program concerns should be brought to the coaching committee and not the coaches listed on our website. We have a young, energetic group of coaches this season. We anticipate a fun and successful season. We are excited to have our very experienced coaches return for a part of our program. Hayley has offered her coaching skills to cover for Coach Shanyn from May 1- May 22 for her Mission to Mexico and to cover for Coach Aiden during his Grade 12 trip May AJ is going to continue to mentor our coaches for 2 coach in-service sessions and 4 different Tech Days with our athletes in Squad 2 and above. We are so very grateful to both of these coaches for offering their expertise and sharing their passion for this club and sport to transition our club into our next set of great coaching staffs. Thanks, Amanda Halford Coaches Corner Erin - Head Coach and Groups 1A, 2B and 4B Hey guys! My name is Erin Williams and I am so excited for the season to start! This will be my fourteenth year I have been involved with summer swimming. I swam with the Lacombe Dolphins for ten years before I became a Marlin for my final year. I then transitioned to coaching and this will be my third summer with the Marlins, but first as head coach! I am looking forward to seeing everyone back at the pool and what the summer has to offer! I am currently pursuing a degree in Kinesiology at the University of Lethbridge with the hope of eventually working somewhere in the health care field. I just finished my second year but I am excited to be back in central Alberta for the summer. I would like to welcome the new Marlin families I look forward to meeting you, as well as seeing the many returning families at the pool! I am eager to see what this season has in store and am sure it will be another fun filled summer! If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. See you at the pool! 2

3 Red Deer Marlins Newsletter Shanyn - Pre-Competitive and Groups1A, 2A, 4A Hello swimmers and parents! I am very excited to be back with the Marlins this season. As I am writing this, I am currently in Mexico doing missions work so I will unfortunately be missing 3 weeks of coaching, but I am excited to come back and start at the end of May. I am looking forward to seeing some new faces and of course, the returning ones as well! For those of you who don't know me, I am 19 years old and have just finished my second year of college at Millar College of the Bible in Saskatchewan. I am excited to be back home for the summer and be working at the pool. I was involved in competitive swimming for 11 years and just couldn't get enough of the pool so last summer I got my coaching certificate and spent my summer coaching and lifeguarding and am happy to be doing that again this summer. When I return I will be coaching the Pre-Comp group, groups 1A and 2A, and also assisting group 4A for the months of July and August. Looking forward to this season! Tyler - Groups 1A and 2B Hi I'm Tyler Driesen, I'm 16 years old and have swam with the Marlins swim club for 8 years. This is my first year coaching Marlins. I coached special Olympics this past year and I really enjoyed it. I have just completed my coaching 101. I have 3 younger siblings. Ages 13, 5, and 3. I have good experience with younger children. I currently attend Lindsay Thurber High School. I am in grade 10. I stay athletic by playing high school and Kings club volleyball and continue swimming. I am really excited to meet all of the great kids and seeing them improve. I'm looking forward to having a great swim season! Go Marlins! Aiden - Group 3 Hello Marlins Nation, My name is Aiden Kooyman, and I am very excited for this swim season! I will be coaching Group 3. This will be my second season coaching the Marlins, but I have also coached Special Olympics for the past two winters. Before coaching, I swam for Lacombe Dolphins for seven seasons and then the Marlins for three. I am currently in grade twelve and will graduate in June. Next year, I plan go to Red Deer College for engineering. But first, it is time for a fantastic summer of swimming! After a highlight season last year, I am excited to be back for another great year. I look forward to seeing all of you at the crack of dawn starting Friday, May 1. See you on deck! Sarah Group 4A Hi my name is Sarah Broen! This is my first year coaching with the Red Deer Marlins. I swam for 8 fantastic years with the Red Deer Catalina Swim Club and for the past two years I have swam for the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns where I will return in the Fall. I have swam at Nationals, Westerns and Canada West Swimming Championships during my swimming career. When I am not in the pool I can be found studying. I am working on my Bachelor of Science in Lethbridge. I love to travel, along with seeing a lot of Canada I have been to London, Germany, France, Belgium, Switzerland and many places in the U.S. My family is the most important thing in my life and I love being home with them. Passing on my love for this sport and helping YOU achieve your goals for this season has me excited to embark on this journey with you! 3 43rd Season, Summer 2015

4 Red Deer Marlins Newsletter Brock - Group 4A (assisting mornings) For those of you who do not know me, my name is Brock Lintern. Last year was the first year coaching with the Marlins and I am incredibly happy to be back. I was a competitive swimmer for the Collingwood Clippers in Ontario for 7 years where my specialties were butterfly as well as distance events. I then became a coach with the Clippers for the next 5 years as well as completing swim lessons as a lifeguard for 2 years. I have worked with multiple age groups from 5-16 year old swimmers. This includes everything from basic stroke development to coaching provincial level athletes. I am very excited to get the swim year started and get our athletes working again! AJ - Tech days and Coaching Inservices Hi everyone! My name is AJ Mahoney. Some of you may remember me from previous years as one of the coaches for the "older" swimmers. This year I will be in a very modified role as more of a helper, running a few tech sessions for both swimmers and coaches over May and June and potentially subbing in for a coach here and there if they can't make it to practice. Definitely not a full time role. I am certified NCCP Level 2 and have been coaching swimming in some capacity for 10 years, most recently as the Technical Director and Squad IV coach for our Provincial Champion team last summer. I am glad to be staying involved with the club as I transition into other avenues, swimming is still a big part of who I am and going "cold turkey" might have been too big of a shock for my system. Looking forward to seeing you at the pool and if you have any questions let me know! Thanks! Amy Coach Helper/Support Hello parents and swimmers! My name is Amy, I'm 16 years old and in grade 11 at Koinonia Christian School here is Red Deer. I'm super excited for this upcoming swim season. This will be my second year as a Marlin but my 13th year in competitive swimming, and I'm excited to be swimming as well as coaching this year! I hope to be able to share a little bit of what I know with all of the swimmers! I'm looking forward to seeing improvements in all the swimmers and goals being met!i hope this will be another successful year for the Marlins! Officials Info 1. Officials Clinic Opportunity The Lacombe Dolphins are hosting an officials clinic on May 23 at the Lacombe Kinsmen Aquatic Centre. Parent participation in a clinic can be used as volunteer hours, and will enable you to volunteer as an official at swim meets throughout the season. It's a great way to get involved and to learn more about the sport! Clinic Times are as follows: 1) Level 1 (timer) am 2) Stroke & Turn. 11:30-1:30 ( last 1/2 hr to see the strokes, must have level one) 3) Starter. 2-4:00. Pm ( must have stroke & turn) If you are interested in attending, please contact Jen Walton (Marlins' Officials Chair) at jtwalton@telus.net before May Swim Alberta is adopting a new officials' dress code. This summer, officials will wear black shorts/skirt/pants and a white shirt. All on-deck officials are asked to adhere to the dress code. White Marlins' officials shirts will be available for purchase for interested parents. (The fitting was April 30 at RDC for sizing.
