Oct 2013 DIVING or WATERPOLO News Splash Refurbishments will lead to temporary pool closures As you know, the sports and leisure organisation Fusion Lifestyle took over the management of Haringey Council s leisure centres in December Over the next year, Fusion will be overseeing a much needed and far reaching programme of refurbishment at Park Road and Tottenham Green. Inevitably, this will lead to some temporary pool closures while they do the work. We are in close consultation with Fusion about alternative arrangements during these periods and while we cannot give dates or details yet, we will strive to give you as much notice as possible. We will aim to cover most training sessions by switching between the pools as necessary, and there may be occasions when this will mean travelling to the other leisure centre (Park Road or Tottenham Green). We will explore the possibility of provision outside of the borough if alternative facilities are not available in Haringey. This will particularly affect the divers if plans go ahead to install a moveable floor in the diving pit. We appreciate that this extra travel may be easier for some of you than others. We hope that this early notice will give you plenty of time to work out ways to support each other car pooling perhaps? As soon as we have any definite dates and information, we will pass it on by and the website. Lesley Walker (Chair, Haringey Aquatics) IN THIS ISSUE Club Captains Corner L2S Hats Swimming Eating during Competitions County Development camp Swimming Gala reports Yoga Lateness Thank you Diving Dates for your diary Volunteering Team Galas Thank you Our summer holiday programme did it work for you? Our coaches aim to provide you with plenty of access to training sessions throughout the summer holidays. As many people are away for some of the time, it doesn t make sense to run a full programme at both pools and our staff need a break Last year we tried running sessions at each pool on alternate weeks and that worked well. This year at the request of our pool providers, we tried a split week with normal sessions at Tottenham on Sunday afternoon to Wednesday and at Park Road from Thursday to Sunday morning. It would be helpful to get your feedback on how well this worked for you. Please send responses by 31 October to the Chair of the club at lesleyw_ha@hotmail.co.uk Parents/swimmers please be aware that gala entries should not be left to the last minute. The deadline is the point at which entries closing and NOT, for when they should to start come in. The consequences can be serious We missed a couple of galas last year because they were already full by the time we submitted. HA Diving Club Championships will be held on Fri Nov 8th at Park Rd Pool at 7pm Diving We wish to send our best wishes to former swimmer Lauren Redman & her partner Marc on the birth of their daughter Lacey. Lauren is the daughter of Haringey Aquatics Chairperson Lesley Walker and sister to Louise Redman who is one of our teachers, Marc s family were also members of the club in the past.

Stage 7 5pm Club Captains Corner Hi, here is a short report on my 1st attempt at taking part in a triathlon. Inspired by the Brownlee brothers Alfie Lucas decided he would like to have a go at doing a triathlon, which is how he found himself on a sweltering Sunday in July at Eton Dorney (where they held the Olympic rowing) along with children from all over the country aged from 8 upwards to take part in the Super Tri. For Alfie s group (aged 11-12) it was a fun triathlon, comprising 200m swim in the lake, followed by a 5.3 km bike ride around the lake and originally a 2km run (reduced to 1.5km because of the 30 degree heat). He was one of 145 boys who all took to the water the same time - it was quite a scrum- and Alfie soon discovered that open water swimming is a very different experience to the discipline of a pool with lanes! Although it was a fun event, most competitors were from triathlon clubs and Alfie came a respectable 70th in a time of (and 113th out of 236 boys and girls). Despite getting a mighty bruise from a kick in the face during the swim Alfie is planning to do it again in 2014.

Swimming Eating during Competitions Swimmers are regularly turning up to competitions with foods that will not help them when in competition so here are a few tips on the best things to eat & bring along with you. When preparing to compete a swimmer needs to pay careful attention to what they eat. The Day Before a Competition Drink fluids little and often, this helps to keep you hydrated Eat little and often, this will help keep sugar levels steady and fuel your muscles ready for your event Avoid big meals or over-eating Morning of the Competition NEVER swim on empty, stick to easily digested foods - cereal, banana & yoghurt, toast or fruit smoothies Snacks during Competition Try to eat as soon as possible after your event, to give yourself as long as possible to recover before your next event Water, diluted fruit juice or sports drinks should be drunk throughout the competition Stick to complex carbohydrates - pasta, rice & bread Dried fruit, nuts, rice cakes or crackers are also good for snacking Two of our swimmers were lucky enough to attend the County Development Day along with Joe. Here are their views on the day. Last Sunday was quite a special day for me. I felt very proud to wear my yellow shirt and cap to represent Haringey Aquatics at Middlesex Development Camp. It was a day of intense training with 2 two hours swimming sessions and a lot of interesting talks regarding different aspects of stretching, nutrition and laws of the sport. My favourite part of the day was the land training. It was really fun and well taught and made me realise that in order to Improve my swimming, I need to concentrate more on land training to further strengthen my upper body. I also learnt how to do more challenging press-ups like the diamond one. It was a very hard day, but worth every second of it! By Shakil I really enjoyed going to the Middlesex Development camp I learned many things at the camp but these are the best ones to know. It is best to stretch 45 minutes before a training session, so you can get your muscles warmed up. If you try your hardest and don't give up, you can get to wherever you want to be. To eat an hour and a half before a race or training session and to always eat some carbohydrates. I had so much fun at the camp because... The layout of the swimming [sessions] were great. It was fun to learn more exciting stretches to do before swimming. And I made some great new friends. I hope that you have learned some new facts and that one day you will be fortunate to go to this camp as well. I am really glad I went! I would like to thank all the coaches and volunteers who made it happen. Kelton Ryland

Swimming Gala Reports Here is the result of the Eric Eady Gala which is a warm up meet for the Arena League at Southbury Rd. ESS A 368 Haringey 267 Potters Bar 255 Anaconda ESS B 218 Hackney 178 Bethnal Green Ware 87 Special mentions to: Alex Mackay, Momo Taylor, Josh Philpott and Shakil Giordani for finishing races in 1st place and the rest of the team which helped get 11 2nd place finishes. Bishops Stortford Gala 22 Swimmers competed in 149 events and gained 89 PB s Graded Gala hosted by Hillingdon we gained a 4th place Arena League result Bishops Stortford 323, Harrow 273, Potters Bar 233, Anaconda 229, Saxon Crown 211, Haringey Aquatics 192, Halstead, 167 Big thanks to The Mall, Wood Green for providing the banner for the most important team in Haringey Lateness Since the last newsletter there has been an improvement on swimmers attending their sessions on time, but as you will be aware stretching is also a very important part to your warm up so please try to get on poolside 10 minutes before your session to allow for this. Gentle on the joints, forgiving of injuries and other physical limitations, and deeply relaxing, swimming and yoga, when practiced together, unite their strengths, making for a more balanced athlete. So arrangements have been made for the performance squad swimmers to have weekly yoga sessions to take place on a Sunday evenings at Tottenham Green at 5pm. These sessions will be taken by Petra Coveney (Sushila's mum) who is a trained Yoga teacher and working with Joe, Petra has developed a swimming specific yoga programme that we think will be of huge benefit to the swimmers. Etiquette for Galas Swimmers/Parents/Carers please be aware that for galas and competitions to take place there are certain things that will help them run quickly and smoothly. When a race is about to start there must be SILENCE. This is to allow all swimmers a fair start. All people on poolside must be still at the start of a race, especially those swimmers standing behind the blocks. This is so there are no distractions for the swimmers. Swimmers are to be courteous and mindful of their manners at all times. (All Officials at Galas are volunteers who give up of their personal time to enable galas to happen. Simple thank you s are all that are needed to make the Officials feel appreciated.)

Remember TEAM means: Together Everyone Achieves More! Team Galas When the Club invites you - usually by - to attend a gala, PLEASE RESPOND ASAP!! It takes time to carefully select swimmers for each gala. Some gala organisers specify fastest and slowest qualifying times, others, such as Leagues, mean that we want to field the best possible team to represent the Club. Late replies mean that new swimmers have to be selected, often at very short notice. Volunteer. awards Last month Pam Crofts and I were surprised and honoured to hear that we had won regional volunteer of the year Aquaforce awards from the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA). In my case the award was for work at club level and while I was embarrassed to be nominated by colleagues who do so much themselves, I was chuffed to bits to win an award. In Pam s case, the award recognises her massive contribution as a member of the Middlesex county s executive, her generosity in refereeing galas and meets all over the region on an almost weekly basis and her role in helping to train up the next generation of officials - many of you will have attended one of her courses on route to becoming an official yourself. If our coaching and teaching programme is the heart of the club, then the work of our volunteers is undoubtedly the life blood of Haringey Aquatics. Whatever it may be - attending committee meetings, officiating at galas or running the stall, managing a team, overseeing the club s business or child welfare, fundraising, record keeping, editing our web content and newsletter or unpaid coaching the club could not function without the support of its many volunteers. Why do we do it? There are many rewards, the most obvious being the sense of achievement, opportunities and friendships that the club opens up for our children. And there is the (enjoyable) challenge of working with others to achieve something tangible. Pam has been a volunteer for the past 27 years and often tells this story when asked what motivates her. She was time keeping at a masters gala many years ago when an 82 year old woman swimming breast stroke in her lane was delighted to finish first. The woman explained that she had been competing against the swimmer in lane 1 since they were aged 15 and had just beaten her for the first time! Please do get in touch if you would like to volunteer for the club. Lesley Thank you! The club would like to thank Renata Bailey (fundraising), Donna Bullen (welfare) and Rachel Herring (web editor) for their valuable contributions to the club. All three have had to stand down from their elected roles. We are fortunate in having two new volunteers join the committee: Margaid Gosschalk has taken on the role of fundraiser and Marianna Giordani is our new welfare officer. But there is plenty to do so if you are interested in any of the roles below get in touch. *Davy Trophy - organise teams and team managers *Volunteer Co- ordinator - to help source volunteers for our club galas and time trials *Personal Best and Club Records - To keep them up to date *Poolside Chaperones
