NOV 2017 News Splash Find us on: Welcome to our autumn edition of News Splash, and to a busy season of Aquatic Sports. Swimming kicked off the new season on 9th September with the 1st round of the very popular Graded Gala. The Club hosted this gala and we fielded 2 Teams, one an official team and one who were able to treat it as a time trial. Graded galas have time banded races where swimmers are entered based on their speed rather than age. This means you could have a 10 year old racing a 13 year old if they are of similar ability. If the swimmer beats the set time they are upgraded and receive 1 point more than the number of teams in the gala. If a swimmer is disqualified they get 2 points more. The lowest points win the gala. It was lovely to see so many new swimmers as well as ones who have been at the club for many years. All the kids looked like they were having a lot of fun. What also was great to see were lots of our older swimmers helping out at the gala, acting as Chaperones and program sellers. Thank you to all of them for ensuring the smooth running of the gala. Can I please take this opportunity however to stress to parents, that without the help of the older children and parents, many of whose children were not competing, this gala could not have taken place. In November we have our own Club Champs, and we will need a lot of help to enable this to run successfully. There are a lot s of jobs needing doing, not just time keepers. So even if you are not qualified, please put your name forward when asked. Also if you are interested in attending a time keeper course, please Marianna Giordani on ha.members@gmail.com and we can arrange training for you. Welcome back, and we hope you had a lovely summer and start to the new school year. The summer holiday period is usually a slowdown time for Haringey Aquatics. This year was different. So look inside this edition to see all the great things we have achieved, participated in and what is planned for the future. 5 Haringey Aquatics grabs medals in London Youth Games In early July, a dozen Haringey Aquatics swimmers and two divers represented the Borough of Haringey against other London borough swimming and diving teams. This annual event for primary and secondary schoolchildren is Europe s largest youth sports festival, and covers sports from Angling to Weightlifting. Travis Kupczyck-Akomeah grabbed gold in the Boys 50m butterfly, the first gold medal in three years (Kelton Ryland). Shakil Giordani battled to bronze in the same event. The London Mini Youth Games swim team delivered a tremendous surge from 2016, finishing 12th (of 27 teams) compared to 26th position the year prior. The Open Age boys and girls swim teams finished 6th and 22nd respectively out of 29 participating teams. Haringey Aquatics divers helped to boost the borough to 4th place (out of 18 teams), up two places from Well done to all, and contact Coach Nathan for more details on this event! Haringey Aquatics spends summer competing from Cardiff to Budapest Divers kicked off a busy summer of competition for the club Tom and Fizz attended the Swim England National Skills Finals at the London Aquatics Centre on July 23 rd. Tom & Fizz put in a great effort for the club against some of the country s top divers. The 2018 target is to at least double the number of divers participating. Water polo player/swimmer Sasha Shute had a busy summer. Fresh from helping the London Region water polo team win silver at the Inter-Regional National Water Polo Finals, she travelled to Hungary for an invitation-only training camp to further hone her skills. Haringey Aquatics slugs it out in first round of Arena League, Division 1 Haringey Aquatics swimmers and coaches headed to Lewisham on 14 October to fight for as many points as possible to the first round of Division 1 of the London Region. In total, 302 teams and 10,000 swimmers compete across 51 galas from October - December to determine the fastest swim club in the country. Gala 1 saw Haringey Aquatics pitted against perennial local London competitors such as Harrow, Anaconda, Saxon Crown and Brompton and further afield teams such as Luton, Harpenden and Dunmow. Final Round 1 results placed Haringey Aquatics finish in seventh of eight teams in its flight, and with a real fight on its hand in the two coming rounds on 11 November and 9 December. Come cheer on the team to remain in Division 1.

Next it was the turn of the swimmers Swimmers Shakil Giordani and Max Hanson represented the club at the British Summer Championships in Sheffield in late July. The competition brings together the fastest swimmers in England, Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland. The event was livestreamed, and some of you watched them compete on your phones or computers. On 30 July, Rose Pepperday was in Yorkshire at the Swim England Open Water National Age Group Championships. Coach Paul cheered on Rose as she chopped 9 minutes over 3 km off her qualifying swim at London Regional Open Water Championships earlier in the month. In August, Shakil Giordani, Renat Samur and Alex Vonckx competed in the Swim England Summer National Championships with Shakil narrowly missing out on a medal. Shakil has already qualified for the Swim England Winter National Championships in December. Others headed in early August to Cardiff for the Swim Wales Summer National Championships with strong swims across the board. Max Green was crowned national champion in multiple events. Also in August, diving coaches John Ley and Rick Dear represented the club as a masters competitor and coach at the 17th FINA World Masters Diving Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Swimmer Max Green represents Middlesex County at the 2017 National Division 1 Championships in early October Max Green swam for Middlesex County in the 200 medley relay, 100m freestyle, and 100m breaststroke on 8 October. He delivered results of 1st, 4th and 5th places which helped Middlesex County to a 7th place overall finish in Division 1 (20 teams). Also representing the club was Sharon Austin who served as a team manager. The annual national competition includes 1,200 swimmers from 40 counties. Previous Haringey Aquatics swimmers in this competition include Max Hanson and Sushila Ghose-Coveney. Swimmer Gareth Davies selected by coaches for adidas swim training clinic with World Champion Ben Proud Haringey Aquatics coaches selected swimmer Gareth Davies to attend an 11 November adidas swim camp. The one-day camp will provide swimmers with teaching and tips from World Champion and Olympian Ben Proud, and more general sessions on nutrition, race preparation and goal-setting. The training camp slot was made possible by the club s team kit and gear supplier, Allens of Kingsbury; the selection decision was made solely by the swim coaches. Swimmer Max Green is called up to Swim England National talent pathway programme In August, Max Green was tapped for Swim England s National Talent Pathway programme, a national effort to prepare promising swimmers for future international competition. Outside of his regular pool sessions with Haringey Aquatics, Green is training with others from across England. Head Coach Paul Doyle stated that this was an historical moment for Haringey Aquatics: Max is the first swimmer from our club to ever be called up. He has achieved some remarkable results in 2017.

Athlete Spotlight: The Wootton sisters Studies have shown that families that exercise together are healthier. The Wootton sisters -- and their parents -- are no exception. Members of Haringey Aquatics swim programme since 2012, the Wootton sisters (Kate, Hannah, Evie) are competing in a swim lane as well as chlorine-free environments such as lakes, on road bikes or with speed laced-running shoes year-round. All three sisters are drawn to two of the fastest growing sports in the UK -- triathlon and open water swimming -- as well as their shared love for scuba diving. Their parents began competing in triathlons ten years ago so Kate, Hannah and Evie grew up thinking that putting a wet suit on and jumping in a lake was normal! Now for the questions... 1) Between the three of you, what sports do you participate in most weeks? Evie: I really just train for swimming and I run at school as well as doing netball and hockey. I have done a couple of aquathlons this year. Kate: I don t swim anymore as I am training for cycling, and have spent this year doing the national races in track and road cycling. Hannah: I train in swimming, running and cycling year round. In the winter, I focus on cross country running and swimming. In the summer, I compete in aquathlons, duathlons, triathlons, swimming and athletics. This summer, I did the London Series which I really enjoyed; it is a series of aquathlons, duathlons and triathlons in-and-around London. 2) What is it that you enjoy about open water swimming? Hannah: I really like to be able to swim outside; I find it quite refreshing. Often it can be hard to swim in a straight line so I have to practice sighting in the water to see where I am going! 3) Triathlon is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. What is it that you enjoy about the sport, and how is the swimming different than what you would experience at a gala? Hannah: The training for triathlon is more varied as you have to spread your efforts over the three sports. The swimming is different as it is hard to see where you are going and you can draft (tuck in behind somebody and benefit from swimming in their slipstream). The normal distance in a childrens triathlon is 400m, although as you get older this will keep increasing. 3a) What is a typical week when training for a triathlon and also including Haringey Aquatics practices? Hannah: I usually train for running and cycling after school, just before swimming. I run 4 times a week, cycle 3 times a week and I swim 4 times a week. Sometimes it s difficult to swim just after training for a different sport because I will be tired or I won t get my best times. But I always try to push myself as hard as I can and not let excuses get in my way. 4) All three of you love scuba diving. Tell me how you got started and why you enjoy it so much. Hannah: I have quite outgoing, adventurous parents who inspired me to scuba dive. I started when I was ten and I have loved it ever since. It is so interesting to see all the wildlife and nature; it s a completely different world under the water. 5) Any tips for our swimmers, divers and water polo players who might want to give triathlons a try? Hannah: Hampstead ponds are a good place to get open water swimming experience, although you share it with the ducks and there has been the odd rat spotted so not for the faint-hearted! Dorney Lake is a great place for extending your open water swimming. The water is more clear and there are lots of organised events ranging from different lengths open water swimming to triathlons. Unfortunately, there aren t any local triathlon clubs for children in Haringey but there are some adult training sessions for triathlon at Park Road and other local gyms. For adults, the sprint triathlons are a good starting point (typical distance 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run) although there are longer ones ranging from Olympic length to the Ironman series. For adults, the Blenheim Palace Triathlon is a popular event at a stunning venue. There is a maze, train and adventure playground so a great family day out! For children, triathlon distances are shorter. For example, someone aged 14 years can expect a 400m swim, 10km bike and 3km run. Supertri and the Human Race are great triathlon series. The Dorney Lake (Eton) events, the childrens triathlons at Hever Castle (people wandering around dressed up as Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn) and Woburn are recommended. Thanks to the Wootton family for sharing, and ask them poolside for any tips and tricks!

Gala Advice part one HOW TO KNOW WHEN THERE IS A COMPETITION Check the website regularly, competitions are advertised there first s are sent re competitions deadlines, complete with links on the website, flag the s you will need Follow Twitter, reminders about competitions are there too Download our new App and switch on the notifications Follow the link in the /twitter/app TO APPLY FOR A GALA Once on the specific gala s website page, read all the info. ALL DOCUMENTS WITH ALL INFO NEEDED REGARDING THE GALA ARE THERE. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY before ing the Club asking for info. Where is the gala: how do I get there Things to check: Programme: how many sessions in a day, how many events per session, which events are for boys or for girls, how many and which events you would like to apply for Age for competition: on day of gala or at 31 st December? Is the gala SHORT COURSE SC (25m pool) or LONG COURSE LC (50m pool) Are there Qualifying Times (QTs)? Are they short course times or long course times? Can converted times be used? UPPER LIMIT - need to be slower than those times LOWER Qualifying Times - need to be faster than those times How much is the entry fee PER RACE, when is payment due? When is the deadline for applying? Date AND time. Late entries are not accepted. Fill in the google form ticking the events you want to apply for. Important: take note of what events you are applying for (take a screen shot or use pen and paper) when (date, session, time if already confirmed) how much to pay CLICK SUBMIT on the google form Make the payment via your bank as money is not taken out of your account when submitting the form Submitted and paid for entries does not mean they are accepted. Accepted entries with confirmed sessions times will be posted on the website and may be ed few days after the closing date and as soon as received from the gala promoter. DO CHECK EVERYTHING AND TAKE NOTE OF CONFIRMED SESSIONS TIMES. Officials the club needs you! When we enter a gala, the host club sets various conditions that we have to honour. A very common condition is that we must supply officials to cover each session. We've been struggling to meet this requirement over the past year. One reason is the small number of parents who are regularly available to officiate. We have only five qualified officials who are parents of current swimmers. Ultimately, if we carry on failing to meet requirements, the gala promoters will not accept our entries and our kids will miss out on these meets. So firstly we really need those of you who are trained officials to commit to officiating at a few more galas if you can. And if you have embarked on training, we need you to turn up to galas and meets to complete your qualification. And because we know that it can be a struggle to make time in our busy lives for officiating, we need more parents to come forward to train up and qualify as an official. More of us doing just a little bit more would be a great way to tackle the problem and spread the load. It's also a great way to join in the fun and contribute to the sport of swimming. Hope you can help - if we all want the club's kids to have the opportunity to compete in galas, we need you to participate as well. If you would like to become a volunteer or a qualified official please ha.members@gmail.com

Gala Advice part two ON THE DAY OF THE GALA Check you have packed all needed: swimming costume for warm up and racing trunks/suit, hat, goggles, towels. Have a spare hat and googles all the times. Don t forget your Club T-shirt. Check WARM UP TIME, swimmers should be ready on poolside at least 15 minutes BEFORE warm up time. Check how to get to the venue before setting off: Are there roadworks or events that could have an impact on traffic public transport Allow extra time for traffic, parking, delays on public transport Bring a 1 coin (and a 20p coin) for the lockers. There might be a fee for spectators and to buy the programme. Make sure you bring food, snacks and plenty of water to drink, it is hot on poolside! Swimmers, check if you need to SIGN IN and do so or you will not be allowed to swim, let the coach know once you have arrived and let the coach know when you leave! IMPORTANT INFO DO NOT BE LATE FOR WARM UP: gala rules are very strict and you might not be allowed to swim at all If for unforeseen circumstances/emergencies you know you will be late DO TEXT/WHATSAPP/CALL as soon as possible If for any reason you need to withdraw from one or more events DO ha.members@gmail.com OR TEXT/WHATSAPP/CALL as soon as possible There are fines for not withdrawing swimmers at galas as empty lanes are a waste of resources and detrimental to the races. For TEAM GALAS (Graded Galas, M11, Arena League) please take into consideration the effect your last minute absence can and will have on the TEAM in general and on relays. REMEMBER WE ARE A COMPETITIVE CLUB. AFTER THE GALA Praise your child for their achievements and celebrate progress!! Remember it can happen to everyone (even to Olympians!!!) to get disqualified or to have a not so good day. Make sure you still praise your child as they certainly did their best!!! Results will be posted on the website and on the app as soon as they are available. Have a special swimming book or a spreadsheet where to log galas with dates, races and times achieved, medals, ribbons, rosettes and make sure you highlight every PB (personal best). Times achieved at licensed galas can be found on just type in your swimmer surname. Start again the whole process of applying for next gala, after all, COMPETITIVE SWIMMING IS GREAT! Tips for Avoiding Disqualifications At the start of the race:- Once the starter has said 'take your marks' the swimmers have to remain still. Any movement after this point will result in disqualification. Backstroke 1. When executing a tumble turn, the swimmer should not turn onto their front until close enough to the wall, so that they do not have to glide in to the wall. 2. Once the swimmer has turned, some part of the body must touch the wall-usually the feet. 3. At the end of the race, the swimmer must remain on their back until they have touched the wall. Breaststroke 1. The leg kick must be simultaneous-otherwise it is seen to be a flutter kick which is not allowed. They also have to be on the same horizontal plane. 2. The hands are not allowed to pull back past the hips except for at the start and during the turn. 3. The swimmer must touch with two hands at the same time at the turn and finish of the race. Butterfly 1. The arms have to be simultaneous and on the same horizontal plane. They must clear the water for every stroke. 2. The legs have to go up and down together -otherwise it is seen to be a flutter kick. Breast stroke legs are not allowed. 3. The swimmer must touch with two hands at the same time for turns and finish of the race. Freestyle 1. If the swimmer tumbles, some part of the body must touch the wall - usually the feet

Waterpolo Water Polo has been steadily growing. We now have four training sessions on a Tuesday evening and are recruiting new players from year 6 & 7 to join the 6pm slot. Please encourage any strong swimmers in that age group to come along for a trial. The first two are free. Bring a friend! This is the first year we have entered a team in the London League. Our U15s did very well to get their first win in September beating Otter 3-2. This was quite an achievement considering we lost 18-0 when we played our first London League Game back in May. The U15s also played three games in a friendly tournament and showed great team spirit to turn around a 5-1 deficit at half time, to beat Barnet 7-6. We have an U14 team competing soon in the London Winter League and next year will be entering both U15 and U13 teams in the London League. We would encourage our more ambitious players to try the training at one of our two local Beacon Centres, Watford and Crystal Palace. This is a great way to get more training time with some excellent players and is the route to playing representative water polo for the regional teams. More details available from Justin.
