1 Electric Eels News Editor: Enma Plank Contributors: Natalie Carlantonio Mikayla Fleeger Anna Plank Gabby Schwartz In this Issue Page 1: Why You Should Try a New Event Page 2: Meet Coach Cam Page 3: Swimmer of the Month Page 4: 10 Fun Facts About Swimming Page 5 : Upcoming events, Photo Gallery Corporate Sponsorship Thank You! December 2017/January 2018 Why You Should Try a New Event Natalie Carlantonio Trying a new event can be scary, but you may actually love it! If you swim the same events all the time, then how will you know if you are great, or even love another event? This season I have done 2 new events and I love them. I did the 100 butterfly and 1000 freestyle. I found out that I am pretty good at both those events, and most importantly I enjoy doing them. If you re the kind of swimmer that only swims backstroke and freestyle, try a breaststroke or butterfly event at the next meet, you might surprise yourself. Just remember, you can do anything you put your mind to!
2 Meet Coach Cam Anna Plank This month s coach interview was done on Coach Cam. This is Coach Cam s first year with the Eels. Coach Cam has 2 siblings, a younger sister and a younger brother. Coach Cam also has 4 pets, 2 cats and 2 dogs. Coach Cam s favorite stroke is freestyle. He started swimming when he was in Elementary school. When he was in his freshman year of high school his biggest goal was to improve his times and get a relay team to States. His biggest accomplishment is becoming team captain of his high school, not because of speed bust because he was very dedicated and his hard work. I asked Coach Cam what he wished more kids on our team would do and he has 2 very good answers. 1. He wishes everyone would be at the pool on time (if possible) 2. That more people would come to dryland because it is fun! Coach Cam said hat his favorite Olympians would be Nathan Adrian or Mark Gangloff. He said in his free time he likes to hang out with friends and family. Coach Cam has also played baseball, tennis, track, and ran cross country. Thanks for all you do for us Coach Cam!
3 Swimmer of the Month Mikayla Fleeger Emily Matz The Swimmer of the Month is Emily Matz! I asked Emily a series of questions about her and she gave me answers. I hope you all enjoy learning about Emily as much as I did. Emily Matz swims in the silver group. She has been swimming on the team for three months. Her favorite stroke is the breaststroke! She is in third grade at Dassa McKinney Elementary. Outside of swimming and school Emily enjoys to play games, paint her nails, play outside, and do chores! I learned many new things about Emily and I hope you all did too!
4 10 Fun Facts About Swimming Gabby Schwartz 10. Benjamin Franklin invented fins- Love them or hate them, we have Benjamin Franklin to thank for fins. Benjamin Franklin loved to swim, and invented swim fins for his hands and feet to increase his speed. Even though he achieved his goal, he decided not to use them because they made his wrists and ankles sore. Swim fins improved over time to become the item we use today. 9.Breaststroke is the oldest stroke- Breaststroke goes all the way back to the Stone Age. Paintings of breaststrokers have been discovered on cave walls. Breaststroke also paved the way for the creation of butterfly. 8. Elephants can swim up to 20 miles a day- Despite their size, elephants are excellent swimmers. They snorkel using their trunks. 7. The first goggles were made from tortoise shells- 14th century pearl divers used a turtle shell s translucent outer layer as a form of goggles. This lessened the water s affect on their eyes. Luckily for us, goggles have improved to create better eye protection. 6.The oldest concrete swimming pool- The Deep Eddy Swimming Pool is the oldest concrete swimming pool. It is located in Texas and was built in % of US citizens do not know basic swimming skills These skills include treading water for one minute, jumping into deep water and coming up for air, spinning in water and then finding a way out, getting out of a pool without a ladder, and swimming one length of a pool without resting. 4. An hour of swimming can burn up to 650 calories Swimming burns more calories than running or biking. 3. Swimmers still sweat in the pool- Even though we don t notice it, swimmers still sweat in the pool. The water doesn t prevent sweating or the need to stay hydrated. 2. The first Olympic swimming races were held in the Mediterranean Sea-It s just like a regular pool. With an average depth of 1,500 meters, salt water, and 47 different species of sharks. 1. Many competitive swimmers can flex their toes to the ground- While this doesn t seem very cool at first, it is really impressive. To try it for yourself, lay down on a flat surface and try to touch your toes to the floor.
