Medication Guidelines Before your doctor writes out your prescription, let him know if you are on any other medication, even birth control pills and vitamins otherwise any chemical reaction may affect the efficacy of the drugs or worse, cause an allergic reaction. Let the doctor know if you are pregnant or nursing. Make a point to know the name of the medication, the purpose, dosage and how it is to be taken, frequency before or after food. Also ask if there are any side-effects to look out for. If you are given antibiotics, be sure to finish the course. If your condition does not improve after three days, check with the doctor before continuing the medication. Stop taking medication if there is any allergic reaction such as severe diarrhoea or rashes. Go back and see your doctor again as soon as possible. Throw away medicines which are past expiry dates as they are no more effective. Do not keep any medicines for more than six months. Check with the pharmacist when taking over-the-counter medicines. Do not doctor-hop. Try to see the same doctor or go to the same clinic, so that all your medical records are available. Better be safe than sorry and when in doubt, ask! 6 National Healthcare Group Polyclinics Adding years of Healthy Life to the people of Singapore
Every Tuesday afternoon, a group of homemakers trade their aprons for dancing shoes and go for belly dancing lessons at Toa Payoh Central Community Club. Gyrating to Egyptian sounding music, the ladies in their 30s to 60s are in the intermediate belly dancing class led by instructress Susanna Lawren. According to Ms Susan Loh, who is in her 50s, belly dancing is fun and she enjoys learning the steps and movements. Dance instructress Ms Lawren, who is in her 30s, got hooked on belly dancing after she took the first lesson in After learning for about two years, she started teaching others in various community centres/clubs around Singapore. I like the dance and the music. And I decided to teach others who share my interest, she said. She conducted her first lesson at Toa Payoh Central Community Club about two years ago. Besides teaching her students to dance, Ms Lawren also looks out for opportunities for them to perform, such as in the recent Gala Raqs Sharqi performance at the Victoria Theatre on April 29. Several of her students took part in the event, which featured Melina, a modern day bohemian Renaissance woman and second generation belly dancer. I believe in giving my students the opportunity to show what they can do. However, the performance is voluntary and involves only those who want to. And I am not too concerned about their skill level. Whoever wants to take part will be chosen, she said. Since she embarked on this new career, she has not looked back. Belly dancing is for everybody. If I can do it, you can too, said Ms Lawren, who counts three men among her students. HOW TO JOIN When : Every Tuesday Time : 1.30pm pm Where : Toa Payoh Central Community Club Fees : $80 (for PA members) $85 (for non- members) Contact : Toa Payoh Central Community Club at
DENGUE KNOW YOUR THREAT Prevention begins with knowing Fight the dengue war by equipping yourselves with some facts about the deadly killer Aedes Mosquito. Allowing breeding of mosquitoes encourages the danger of dengue fever. It is therefore vital to always be vigilant to destroy breeding sites. In the first 18 weeks of this year, Singapore has seen 1,734 dengue cases about 36 per cent more than last year. (Published in The Straits Times, 6 May 2008) Unless the trend of infections is halted, the number of dengue cases will continue to rise. Know your enemy today hunt them down now! Turn pails and watering cans over and store them under shelter Remove e water in plant pot plates. Cover rarely used gully traps. Replace Clean and scrub the plate thoroughly the gully trap with non-perforated to remove mosquito eggs. Avoid the ones and install anti-mosquito valves. use of plant pot plates, if possible. 8
Fast Facts about the Mosquito Only the female aedes mosquito bites as it needs the protein in blood to develop its eggs. The mosquito becomes infective approximately 7 days after it has bitten a person carrying the virus. This is the extrinsic incubation period, during which time the virus replicates in the mosquito and reaches the salivary glands. Peak biting is at dawn and dusk. The average lifespan of an Aedes mosquito in nature is 2 weeks. The mosquito can lay eggs about 3 times in its lifetime, and about 100 eggs are produced each time. An Aedes mosquito larva in water The eggs can lie dormant in dry conditions for up to about 9 months, after which they can hatch if exposed to favourable conditions, i.e. water and food. Visit to find out more about how you can help to stop the breeding. Cover bamboo pole holders after use. Rainwater can potentially accumulate in these bamboo pole holders if they are uncovered and create a habitat. Change water in flower vases. Clean and scrub the inner sides of vases.wash roots of flowers and plants thoroughly as mosquito eggs can stick to them easily. Information adapted from National Environment Agency 9
A pleasant surprise for residents! The Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC MPs, led by DPM Wong Kan Seng, dropped in to say hi and spent time socialising with the residents. Below is a pictorial spread of their visit. 10
Flower power The couple has six children, 20 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Their youngest son stays with them in the Toa Payoh Lorong 7 flat. Step into Madam Hanifah binte Abdul Latiff s home and the first thing that greets you is the whiff of flowers wafting across the living room. The sight is just as appealing as the smell, as the entire room is filled with lovely flower arrangements done by the 60-year-old great-grandmother. There are flowers in Chinese vases, a fish bowl and baskets. Madam Hanifah and her husband Mohd Azmi bin Abdullah enjoy being immersed in this floral experience. I feel very happy when I see and smell the flowers. It makes me feel very relaxed, said Mr Mohd Azmi, who works as a security officer. Started young Madam Hanifah learnt flower arrangement from her grandparents when she lived with them in a kampong during her childhood days. We would pluck the flowers from our kampong and arrange them beautifully to decorate our house, she recalled. A cleaner by profession, she has two hobbies cleaning her house and flower arrangement. When it comes to choice of flowers, Madam Hanifah is very discerning, preferring those from Taiwan and Hong Kong because they are more colourful and lasting. Her sister, who travels overseas regularly, helps her to buy these flowers. Her favourite flowers are orchids, roses and tiger lilies. It takes time Each arrangement takes about a week to complete but can last up to five years. Flower arrangement is an art. I have to spend time exploring different combinations and viewing the arrangement from different angles before deciding on the final product, she said. According to her, the secret to preserving the lifespan of the flower arrangement is to keep the front door close so that dust and wind will not spoil it. Flower arrangement is just a hobby to her and Madam Hanifah has no intention of turning it into a business. So far, she has shared her skills with one daughter, two daughters-in-law and two grand daughters. 11
