Hello Fellow Coaches, I am honored to address you as the new President of the SD Division. I am excited about the future, and look forward to working with an outstanding Board in the next year. One of my goals is to do more things for our members, and I am looking forward to reaching out to ALL of you for ideas, so I can know what direction the Division wants to go. What do YOU want? Just reflect on the Division: What is working well? What can be improved? Please me your thoughts. Although we received some good input through a survey last year, let s see if we can collect some more interesting ideas from these two questions. Whether you are a new member or have been a member for many years, the USPTA San Diego Division is here for you, so please bring your talents to the table, so we can all be better. If you are interested in joining any of the committees, please let me or any of the Board members know. The committees are listed on Page 3 of this newsletter. I invite any of our members to submit a tennis tip or a tennis article for our newsletter, or anything of interest to the membership. We also have quite a few members that still like to compete; let s try to make a circuit for our better singles and doubles players. I see how the Division is growing and trying to excel by providing more to the members. In the last year, we added an Executive Director to have a better-organized Division, and improve communications with our membership and USPTA headquarters in Houston. In early 2011 we will co-host a Divisional convention in January, offer new educational opportunities and specialty courses, and much more. Please see all the calendar of events in this newsletter for the details. I am also very pleased to announce that the Coachella Valley has a new representative, Tom Fey, who has continued on next page

3 President's Message continued from previous page joined the Board, and he is eager to energize the division with great ideas and events. I also would like to see our Division to integrate more with the other tennis organizations. After all, we do not want to be an island. Try to promote our national and local USPTA initiatives in all your tennis events. I think our Division has the potential to make a big impact across the tennis landscape, and I really want to hear if you have something to say, because we can always try different things and see what happens. The Board welcomes suggestions, comments, or concerns on how to make our Division more productive. Better yet, take a look at the committees and see if you would be interested to serve on one of them. Want to be part of the Board? Please let us know - we already have some interested members and would be happy to add you to the list, too. I look forward to meeting with each and every one of you in the future. I am very proud to have been a USPTA member since 1999, and am excited to work with you to make our Division even better. 7 No Man s Land: TENNIS TIP by Jeff Dollins The largest box on a tennis court or back court is often referred to as no-man s-land. I always thought it was named this because players should not be caught standing in this area. But the term actually comes from war times. In trench warfare, the space between trenches (where you most likely can be shot) is referred to as no-man s land. I agree that standing in this area is dangerous, but why? Well in my opinion it s because the average ball bounces in this area more than anywhere else. This is more important to understand than worrying about standing in this specific box. Standing right where the ball bounces makes hitting the ball difficult. Hitting the ball close to the bounce is hard to time and requires hitting the ball up to get it over the net. So trying to hit a ball that you will more likely miss and can set your opponent up with a floater is the real danger. That being said I would argue that no-man s-land should be anywhere the ball is bouncing whether or not it is in that back box. For example, if someone has a weak second serve and you know it has to bounce in the service box standing in the back box may actually be the best place to position yourself. Or if you hit a surprisingly deep shot and your opponent hits a weak or short reply, moving up into the back box (or no-man s land) would allow you to take the next ball well after the bounce and hit a more aggressive approach shot. Even standing on the baseline when the ball lands on or near the baseline is asking for trouble. You should be a lot further back than just barely behind the back box or you can move into the back box and take it out of the air before the bounce. In all of these cases, you re trying to stay away from where the ball bounces which may or may not be in the back box. Experienced players are usually better at keeping the ball deep which means getting caught standing in the back box will get you in trouble. But there are a lot of players out there that don t get their shots to land deep in the court and you can be more effective with your shots if you move up into the back court to strike the ball. I still don t recommend getting comfortable standing in this area because odds are your opponent will hit in that area and you ll be stuck near the bounce. Basically, I want players to be aware of staying either behind or in front of the bounce rather than to worry about standing in the back box. No-man s-land or the danger place to stand is anywhere the ball is bouncing regardless of where that is. USPTA Day at the BNP Paribas Open The BNP Paribas Open will be held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on March 7 20, Once again, they are generously offering one complimentary lodge ticket for Monday, March 14, 2011 to all current USPTA members of the San Diego and California Divisions. Additionally, certified USPTA pros that assist with Kids Day may be eligible to receive a grounds pass for the tournament. Further information regarding the tickets and grounds passes will be sent out in an e-blast to all members. For information, contact Tom Fey at or him at tfey@iwtg.net. 7

9 USPTA and the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation team up in the fight against obesity The United States Professional Tennis Association and Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation commit to working together in 2011 to reduce childhood obesity. The USPTA s Tennis for the health of it! initiative, which started in 2008, promotes the great health benefits of playing tennis, and fits well with the goals of the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation to provide resources to encourage energy balance and reduce obesity, especially childhood obesity. The sport of tennis and its tremendous health benefits (both physical and psychological) make it a key activity to help youth (and all age groups) achieve energy balance. While the gym and fitness classes are great for the gym enthusiasts, for those who prefer an outdoor activity/sport instead, tennis can serve that purpose as fun, easy exercise. Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation also joins an artillery of heavy hitters already on board and committed to supporting USPTA in its efforts to promote Tennis for the health of it! through Tennis Across America, which is the original grassroots lessons program in its 22nd year. The program is celebrated in May, which is also National Fitness Month. There is no doubt that tennis is one of the best activities when it comes to burning calories, enhancing brain development and improving one s mental and physical health, and there is strong scientific evidence/studies behind it, said Jack Groppel, USPTA Master Professional and vice president, and co-founder of Human Performance Institute. We feel that by keeping Tennis for the health of it! and tennis front and center, we can really help promote energy balance and make a difference in the battle against obesity in general and specifically childhood obesity. The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, a CEO-led organization, is a national, multi-year effort designed to help reduce obesity especially childhood obesity by It s a first-of-its kind coalition that brings together more than 130 retailers, food and beverage manufacturers, restaurants, sporting goods and insurance companies, trade associations and NGOs, and professional sports organizations. The Foundation promotes ways to help people achieve a healthy weight through energy balance calories in and calories out. It focuses on three critical areas the marketplace, the workplace and schools. For more information, visit org. The main goals of USPTA s Tennis for the health of it! initiative are to make the general public aware of the tremendous health, fitness and psychological benefits of tennis and encourage people to get out and play the sport as a part of their regular fitness regimen. An activity such as tennis that is also social and fun can serve as a great alternative to gym workouts or as an additional activity in a fitness regimen. In addition, the USPTA and its members are the delivery force through which the public can receive these benefits through lessons and other tennis activities. For more information visit 9

12 USPTA announces new member credential -- New Accredited Professional Coach classification includes mandatory continuing education -- The United States Professional Tennis Association has announced the launch of its Accredited Professional Coach classification, a new membership classification that includes mandatory education. The new classification became effective January 1, It is open to Professional 1, 2 and 3 members and Master Professionals. USPTA Professional members are required to take continuing education in order to earn and maintain APC status. The benefits of APC designation include opportunities for career enhancement through a commitment to tennis and tennis education and demonstration of expertise, and building the image of tennis-teaching professionals and tennis as a profession overall. The APC is earned by accumulating 20 APC continuing education credits within a two-year period. The designation is maintained by continuing to earn 20 APC credits over every two-year period. APC credits can be earned in a variety of ways including attending the USPTA World Conference, USPTA division conventions, USPTA specialty courses, USTA High Performance education, viewing DVD seminars, and more. Two hours of qualifying education will constitute one CEU. The opportunity to earn credits at USPTA World Conferences and division conventions will require members to fill out a form for credit at the beginning of the seminar or specialty course (that is collected at the end of the seminar), in order to verify attendance for credit. For more details regarding qualifying credits, visit uspta.com, click on the education tag and click on "more" after Accredited Professional coach in the Enhancing Your Career Section. Once members achieve this distinction, they will be issued a special certificate with an expiration date and the designation will be added after their professional rating. The certificate will be available online to print from the member management area of where members can log in with name and member number. While the APC classification did not become effective until January of this year, those members who attended specialty courses at the World Conference in September and completed the forms for credit will have those credits count toward the APC classification. To apply for this new membership classification, in addition to being certified at the USPTA professional level, members must also take the Professional Tennis Coaches Academy I and pass a competency exam at the 80 th percentile or higher. Those who have already taken the PTCA I and scored 80 percent or higher do not need to retake it. 12
