In this pack you will find Task Cards which are linked to the VolleySLIDE resource. These cards are can be used to aid your teaching delivery, or by participants when looking to do some theory based work. Some sample answers to the questions posed in both the resource pack and these Task Cards can be found at the end of each section. These are just to be used as a guide, they are the key points for each topic but more detailed information can be found on the internet or in books relating to the questions. TASK CARDS

What are the visible differences between the two sports shown here? OLYMPIC VOLLEYBALL DIFFERENCES PARALYMPIC SITTING VOLLEYBALL

In these match situations, who would win the point? A. The Team A serves the ball and it lands untouched on their opponents back line? B. A defender from Team B returns the ball on the 1 st touch and it lands in the middle of the Team A court? C. A player from Team A spikes the ball and it hits the head of a Team B player before hitting the wall? D. A Team A player attempts to block at the net and their forearm touches the top band of the net? E. A player from Team A lifts their buttock off the floor when Blocking but doesn t touch the ball? What about these situations, who would/could win the point and why? F. G. H. I. J. POINTS

Player 1 How could the players detailed here Confident suit different skills and positions on a Powerful volleyball team? Accurate Good deception Comfortable with pressure Player 2 Good communicator Tactical/strategic Strong hand-eye coordination Good decision maker Quick mover Player 3 Determined Tough Agile Committed to the team Great reactions Player 4 Long arms Big hands Competitive Good reader of the game Player 5 Quick at short movements Powerful Aggressive High reach Good ball control A quick decision maker The possible options: PLAYERS Setter Attacker Server Defender Blocker

Differences: 1. Olympic players are standing, Paralympic players are sitting 2. Olympic court much bigger 3. Olympic net much higher 4. Athletes have a disability 5. Players are allowed to block the service 6. Olympic Referee is on a stand It is also worthwhile asking what is similar that they may not of expected? 1. Same number of players 2. Liberos (different colour shirt) 3. Court Colours 4. The ball 5. Same number of officials 6. Both have lots of space around the court Who wins the point? A. Team A wins the point as the player served an Ace. B. Team B wins the point, you don t have to use all 3 allocated touches, you can only use 1 or 2. C. Team A wins the point, because it touched Team B and then went out (hit the wall). D. Team B wins the point, Team A touched the top net band. E. Team B win the point as blocking is the one time you don t have to touch the ball to commit a fault. F. If the ball touches the team in white and then goes out the other team will win the point. G. The red 7 has lifted her buttocks when playing the ball so has committed a fault. H. If the white player tips the ball to the floor they win the point. I. If the blue 4 touches the top band of the net then the white team win the point. J. If the player serves an ace then they wins the point, her feet being over the line isn t a fault. Players Characteristics There are lots of different options, but this is a guide based on the initial intention of the author when this task was written: Player 1 Server Player 2 - Setter Player 3 - Defender Player 4 Blocker Player 5 - Attacker

A full size Court: 3m 2m 2m 3m 11.66m Other options: 11.66m 6m 4m 8m 10m 3.5m 6m Players characteristics Men Mixed Net Heights: Net height 1.15 m 1.10 m 3m 2m 4m 3m COURT Women Junior 1.05 m 1.00 m

VolleySLIDE Get all participants to spread out and sit down on the floor with everyone on one side of the net. Work through the positions shown below and instruct them to move in all directions at increasing speeds so that they can explore what is easiest/ hardest for themselves. SITTING

To help bring the words in the next two sections into life, below you will find a key that can be used to understand the layouts, positions and ball movements suggested for each activity. Full Court Head Coach/Leader Server Attacker (OrAnge) Half Court Assistant Coach/Leader Ball Ball Movement Hard Ball Medium Ball Easy Ball Setter (Silver) Passer (Pink) Blocker (Blue) Defender (Dark Red) KEY FOR ACTIVITY LAYOUT DRAWINGS Libero (Lime Green) TASK CARD F Remember: The drawings only relate to the initial set-up of the activity. Any suggestions or options to extend the activity are not shown by the diagram(s). Sometimes participants will have more than one function. This is indicated by splitting the circle in two, the colour on the left being their first job and the colour on the right being their second. For example: this participant will Set, and then Block.

Key teaching points: Two handed simultaneous finger contact Rebounds off the finger tips and thumbs Create a window (triangle) above the forehead Bring the ball in using predominantly the thumb, index and middle fingers and release quickly to a peak Key to getting this right is being in the right position. (if you remove your hands it should hit your forehead) REMEMBER the Angles of Ease Suggested activities are: One on One In pairs opposite each other, they work together to keep the ball off the floor. VOLLEY Return to Sender A designated feeder throws a ball to a sitting participant who returns the ball using the appropriate skill (Volley or Dig)

Key teaching points: Ensure thumbs are level. Two options for this are: [1] make a fist with the writing hand and wrap the other hand around. Do not interlink fingers. [2] With one hand on top of the other hand cross the fingers diagonally. Then fold so thumbs are together. Ball rebounds off the lower arm (not the hands/wrists) Use minimal elbow movement, guide the ball to the target. [1] [2] REMEMBER the Angles of Ease Suggested activities are: One on One In pairs opposite each other, they work together to keep the ball off the floor. DIG Return to Sender A designated feeder throws a ball to a sitting participant who returns the ball using the appropriate skill (Volley or Dig)

Key teaching points: Sit in a position where you can cover a large percentage of the court. Note: It is easier to push backwards so start forward! Read the player and ball to help anticipation Relax on the contact to take speed off the ball (if hit with power) Get the ball up. High. Ideally on your side of the net Keeping it alive is needed, technique to do so is a benefit. Suggested activities are: The Pit alone or with some teammates, defenders get fed continuous balls and are challenged with getting them up/to a target. Solo A stable feed to a setter who sets an Attacker, depending on the outcome players switch positions. Multi-Spike One player continuously attacks towards a team of Blockers and Defenders. DEFENDING Attack vs D A team receives a ball and has to create an attack, the rally is then played out.

Key teaching points: Make sure you can see the ball and the Server Know where you identified target is (your Setter ) Have your hands on the floor when they toss the ball Communicate with the others trying to block/pass the serve Angle your body towards where you want the ball to go Pass the ball high, off the net towards the target Suggested activities are: Pass Pass One Server serving towards one passer who passes the ball to a target. Pass Attack Using half the court a Server serves towards two Passers who Pass and then Attack back. Wash Drills Set up in a game like scenario where teams have to win a certain number of points in succession. PASSING Play a Set Decide on the points target and who serves first and off you go.

Key teaching points: Be ready to move in any direction until you know who is attacking Don t be positioned behind any Blocker Move so you are in front of where the attacker will contact the ball Reach up as high as possible (without lifting) Try and get your open hands on top/over the net Use hands to direct the ball back into court Suggested activities are: Monster Block Looking at the movement, position and timing a Block. Multi-Spike One player continuously attacks towards a team of Blockers and Defenders. Wipe off A structured attack where the Attacker attempts to hit off the Blockers to win the point. Solo A stable feed to a Setter who sets an Attacker, depending on the outcome players switch positions. BLOCKING Wash Drills Set up in a Game like scenario where teams have to win a certain number of points in succession.

Key teaching points: Assume you will be set every time To prepare, move off the net to make space then slide forwards towards the line of the ball to attack Hit the ball as high as possible (without lifting) Use an open hand, cupped around the ball Try and direct the ball into a space Suggested Activities are: Multi-Spike One player continuously attacks towards a team of Blockers and Defenders. Pass Attack Using half the court, a Server serves towards two Passers who Pass and then Attack back. Wipe off A structured attack where the Attacker attempts to hit off the Blockers to win the point. ATTACKING Solo - A stable feed to a Setter who sets an Attacker, depending on the outcome players switch positions. Wash Drills Set up in a game like scenario where teams have to win a certain number of points in succession.

Key teaching points: EITHER Try to redirect the ball away from your opponent before it reaches them. OR If this is not possible, try to touch the ball second (slightly after your opponent) using as much strength as you have and push at an angle away from their centre. As this is where they have the most strength. Ensure that players don t lift their buttocks while Jousting, this will obviously loose them the point. When players compete at the net, another difference between [standing] Volleyball and Sitting Volleyball is that, as there is no jump neither player will fall away before the other. Therefore there is the potential for the ball to become trapped between two players from opposing teams. When this happens and the ball stops moving a let is played, where neither team wins a point and it is replayed. JOUSTING To win these battles, before it gets to the stage of needing a let to be played players need to think quick and act cleverly.

Key teaching points: Key features of a serve: Both buttocks are behind the base line of the court You must make the opposition play the ball Hit the ball with one hand, using the heel of the hand for power along with with open fingers for control It is the only time you control the ball completely Consistently tossing the ball to the right place is critical Can be underarm as well as overarm Have the an intention (e.g. put the ball into a space) Move onto court to your base position after serving Avoid/go over the Blockers Suggested Activities are: Target Practice Players work individually on serving to predetermined targets or spaces. SERVING Gone Fishing Teams serve against each other towards their own team mates.

Sitting Volleyball is a great sport for use in schools whether it is a wet weather lesson or an inclusive sports day. The sport is very flexible and a variety of forms can be played with players either being sat on the floor or in a wheelchair. BUM BALL - A GAME FOR ALL! Use a badminton court for the court markings. Set the badminton net either at 1m if sat on the floor or at normal badminton height if sat in wheelchairs. Have even teams, preferably 6v6 but can be any number. Each team has up to 3 catches to return the ball over the net. A rally is started with a Serve from behind the back service line, which is initially a two handed throw. If the team who serves wins the point, the same person serves again. Players rotate around clockwise taking it in turns to serve, however, the maximum a player can serve in a row before the team is forced to rotate is 3. The ball is allowed to bounce once during the teams 3 touches, at any point. Play to a total of 25 points or use time to control the length of matches. The aim is then to progress this very basic version of the game towards more conventional Sitting Volleyball as you feel is appropriate. Some ways of doing this are: 1. Replace the throw to start the rally with a traditional Volleyball serve. (A one-handed strike from a tossed ball.) 2. Replace the middle contact (the second one) with a volleyball shot where the ball needs to rebound off the body. 3. Enforce that the last of the contacts needs to be a hit/spike. BUMBALL

Level of Participants No of points in a set Beginners 11 1 Mildly experienced Intermediates Experienced 15 in all 3 (changing ends when the first team gets to 8 in the 3 rd set) 25 in the first 2, then 15 in the 3 rd (changing ends at 8 in the 3 rd ) 25 in the first 4, then 15 in the 5 th (changing ends at 8 points) No of sets in a match When organising a match or set, make sure all are aware of what total you are playing to before you start and nominate someone who is not playing to keep the score. Scoresheets are provided later within these Task Cards, or you can use other scoring devices like one shown below: VolleySLIDE Other options for scoring between two teams are: Teams must win a certain number of points in a row to rotate. Teams win a double point if they win a certain type of point (e.g. a block or ace serve.) SCORING Teams must win a rally then win an additional free ball point where an easy thrown ball is given to the winning team which they must win as well. One player needs to do a certain action for the team to rotate.

If you have spare participants, why not get them to Referee, or Line Judge? Each game can have 1 or 2 Referees (hand signals are shown on Task Card R). Together they control the game by authorising the Service, calling up any faults that they see and managing the Scorers and Line Judges. Line Judge Referee Referee They are positioned at either end of the net with the Line Judges in the corners. When you only have 2 Line Judges they are positioned as shown above, but if you can have 4 then they all just watch 1 line each. Line Judge The ready position. The Line Judges are there to predominantly watch the ball and inform the Referee whether the ball landed in, out or was touched by a player before going out. The game of Sitting Volleyball is fast, so they need to be ready as the ball can come their way at any second. LINE JUDGEING In. Out. Touched, then Out.

This team to serve. That ball was in. That ball was out. That ball was touched. VolleySLIDE REFEREEING Net touch. (on the top band) Lifted Bottom. (when touching the ball) Two touches. (by the same player)

Watch some game play on You Tube and imagine you are one of the coaches. Stop the video and describe what you would tell your team if the other coach called a time out at that moment. 17. What safety considerations do you need if you were to design a set of cheap and easy to move sitting volleyball posts and net. 18. If you wanted to play in European tournaments, which competitions could you look to attend. THEORY HOMEWORK 19. You are a teams opposition scout. What could they need to know, how best could this be recorded? 20. Plan a sequence of activities to develop a teams Spiking. Or allow them to pick their own part of the game.
