29 Coastal Carolina President David DeCenzo and his wife Terri showed their support by attending the match. Shallu Mehta, a cancer survivor and employee of First Citizens Bank in Conway, took part in the first serve ceremony. During the month of October, the Coastal Carolina volleyball team participated in the DIG PINK Breast Cancer Awareness Rally to raise money for breast cancer research. The Chanticleers played their annual DIG PINK match on Oct. 23, 2009 against Liberty in front of over 550 fans. The match featured plenty of giveaways and lots of pink, including the first 400 fans received a free pink t-shirt. The team also wore pink warm-ups and pink socks. Other things the team did to raise money for the cause, included receiving monetary donations for every dig in the match, as well as collecting change in DIG PINK banks that were provided by First Citizens Bank. Also at the match, the team hosted a silent auction, which included items such as a signed volleyball, gift certificates and golf packages. The month-long event raised over $5,000 with all the proceeds being donated to The Side-Out Foundation and a local breast cancer organization in the Myrtle Beach/Conway area. The team will take part in the event again this year in their home match against Winthrop on Tuesday, October 26 at 6 p.m.. Before the match, the Coastal Carolina volleyball team asked all the breast cancer survivors in attendance to join them on the court to be recognized. Agatha O Brien-Gayes, the Director of Academic Advising at Coastal and cancer survivor, served the honorary first serve. Fans show off their pink at the match. Dig Pink 2009 The silent auction featured golf packages and gift certificates to local businesses. 27

Coastal battled through some losses, but at the start of conference play, the team registered a then-school record 10-game win streak which was broken up by a 3-2 loss at UNC Greensboro. The UNC Greensboro match was the only loss for the Chants for the remainder of the season until the NCAA Tournament. Coastal posted a 13-1 record in league action, the best in the Big South. In the Big South Tournament, the squad recorded 3-0 shutout victories against Charleston Southern and Liberty to advance to the championship game. 36 2009 NCAA Appearance As the old adage goes, It s not how you start the season, but how you finish it, and that could not be more true for the 2009 squad. The Chanticleers had a tough road, going 7-7 out of conference and 10-6 in the Big South to finish fourth in the league. However, the turning point in the season came on Senior Night after the team lost a disappointing match to Presbyterian. At the conclusion of the match, the team went into the locker room and talked about what needed to be changed and where they were going to go from there. After a lot of tears and frustration, the squad emerged as a new team with one goal--to win the Big South Tournament and go to the NCAA Tournament. Looking like a new team, Coastal faced its first test in the opening round of the Big South Tournament as it beat High Point 3-2 in a tough five-set match. The Chants played spoiler for the third time of the season, defeating regular season champion UNC Asheville in all three meetings of the season, including a 3-0 win in the Big South semifinals to advance to the tournament finals. In a rematch of the 2008 championship match, the squad defeated Liberty 3-1 to earn the school s third Big South Tournament championship. Junior Chelsy Kimes was named Big South Tournament MVP after registering 50 kills in three matches, including 12 kills in one set against UNC Asheville. Kimes was also selected to the All-Tournament team along with junior Megan Bickford. Freshman Sierra Livesay was named Big South Freshman of the Year and senior Jill Nyhof earned Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row as well as being selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Second Team. Coastal Carolina was sent to Nebraska to play the Cornhuskers in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, falling 3-0.
