Pepperdine Men s Volleyball Wisdom and experience should help Pepperdine, picked to finish sixth in the MPSF Preseason Coaches Poll, with mostly juniors and seniors expected to begin the season in the star ng rota on. Returning starters from last season include seniors Kyle Gerrans (Los Gatos, Calif./Valley Chris an) and Ryan Plueger (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake), redshirt juniors Parker Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro HS) and Leonardo Granato (Reseda, Calif./Grover Cleveland HS/Pierce College) and juniors Ma West (Sea le, Wash./ Shorewood HS) and Josh Taylor (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School). Junior Nikola Antonijevic (Buffalo Grove, Ill./ Stevenson HS) is also back with a fair amount of star ng experience from 2012 and When asked what he felt the team s strengths were this year, veteran coach Marv Dunphy chose to remain coy, op ng to let the Waves impending match play speak for itself. Our strengths are to be determined, said Dunphy, now in his 31st season at the helm. We know what the set standards are to be successful. Standards in serving, blocking, passing and so on. Every day we evaluate ourselves based on that standard. We believe it s a championship standard. We re not mee ng a lot of those standards right now, nor should we be at this point. As always, we want to play good volleyball and focus on the process, con nued Dunphy, assisted this season by David Hunt and Jonathan Winder. Every team forms its unique iden ty. Everyone s role develops and evolves throughout the course of the year. Dunphy did go on to say that if he had to choose a strength for his 2014 squad, it would be depth. Pepperdine s roster currently includes two se ers, five outside hi ers, six middle blockers, two opposites and three liberos. Several members of the team are capable of playing outside of their primary posi on. Here s a closer look at the team, broken down by posi on. SETTERS Ma West returns as the most decorated player in the Waves lineup. He was awarded AVCA All-American first team status a er leading the NCAA with assists per set in He had a good summer (playing with USA Volleyball) and good year last year, said Dunphy of his offensive maestro. What I like about Ma is he wants to be good and he s willing to do what he needs to do to be good. By the nature of his posi on he will be in a leadership role. He s carried a pre y big load for us since day one and he does it well. In addi on to his All-American accolades, West was an All-MPSF first team pick in He s already gained a en on as the season looms, being placed on the Lloy Ball Award (best collegiate se er award) watch list and earning preseason All-American dis nc on by Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Notably, West sat out the exhibi on season recovering from a back injury. Earning valuable match experience during that me was freshman se er Soren Dion-Kindem (Agoura, Calif./Agoura HS). Soren taking the snaps in the exhibi ons has been huge, con nued Dunphy. He s been an asset to the team, and we know we are in capable hands with him out there. Dion-Kindem averaged assists per set in the four exhibi on matches against Canadian squads while collec ng 2.07 digs per set on the defensive end. OUTSIDE HITTERS Dunphy has five outside hi ers at his disposal this year, three of whom earned star ng bids in Josh Taylor resumes his post on the outside, where he has started in all but two matches since stepping foot on campus in Taylor is Pepperdine s top-returning scorer from last year, and if exhibi on play is any indica on, he should be the go-to hi er in He put down 3.08 kills per set as a sophomore. In exhibi on ac on, the 6-foot-7 junior averaged 4.75 kills to the tune of a.430 hi ng percentage. Josh had a good year and a good summer with Team USA, Dunphy said. He s going to get a lot of swings and will carry a big load for us. He already has and this year should be no different. He came to us as a true opposite, never having passed a ball, and now he s become a true outside hi er and has to play all aspects of the game. Taylor was an All-MPSF honorable men on in 2013 and made MPSF All-Freshman status in Kyle Gerrans is expected to return to his role as a star ng outside hi er. Gerrans began 2013 as the Waves starter, but saw his year cut short a er disloca ng his ankle midseason. Now healthy, the senior will be looking to make the most of his final season. Kyle is a determined young man and balances school, volleyball and family remarkably well, praised Dunphy. One of the things I like about him is that he s always about the team and compe ng with his teammates and for his teammates. He s always focused on what is upcoming in a good way. Gerrans, a solid passer on serve receive, averaged an even 2.00 kills and 1.00 digs as a junior. Sco Rhein (Pleasant View, Tenn./Aaron Academy) was elevated to starter last year in Gerrans absence, and is *Pepperdine later vacated all wins (66), NCAA Tournament loses (1), MPSF Tournament Championships (1) and NCAA Tournament appearances (1) accrued during the 2008, 09, 10 and 11 seasons due to self-reported NCAA violations. Records marked with an asterisk do not reflect this. Pepperdine s official NCAA all-time record is , while Marv Dunphy s official NCAA record at Pepperdine is overall. Pepperdine s official conference record is and its official MPSF record is Pepperdine s NCAA official home record is

3 capable of delivering. He had a breakout performance against UC San Diego when the 6-foot-4 outside hi er tagged down 13 kills on 16 errorless swings to help lead Pepperdine to the win. His final hi ng percentage of.812 went down as the program s fi h-best single-match clip, and the best amongst outside hi ers. He s been playing real well in prac ce and has improved his hi ng and passing, commented Dunphy. I m sure we will be calling on him several mes as the season progresses. Two freshmen join the ranks of the outside hi ers, including Max States (Honolulu, Hawaii/Solimar Academy) and James Gehrels (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic HS). Max sees the game well and plays really, really hard, con nued Dunphy, His ability to make good volleyball plays is contagious. James is also another important asset to this team and is improving every day. OPPOSITES Parker Kalmbach, the Waves resident u lity player, is expected to start on the right side, replacing All-American Maurice Torres. Kalmbach came to Malibu as an outside hi er before star ng every match of 2013 as a middle blocker. The transi on was a smooth one and Kalmbach picked up All-MPSF honorable men on acclaim. He ranked fi h in the MPSF with a blocks average of At opposite, we have to make up for a lot of aces, blocks and kills, said Dunphy, referring to Torres impressive impact during his four years at Pepperdine. Torres led the Waves in kills and aces in each of his four years in Malibu and ranks sixth all- me in program history with 1,634 career kills. We start replacing those number by commi ee, star ng with Parker Kalmbach. Parker isn t just an outside hi er, middle blocker or opposite. He is a volleyball player in the complete sense of the term. That helps us. He sees the game well and plays well. Also playing on the right side, although capable of playing in the middle as well, is Evan Dean (Corona del Mar, Calif./Corona del Mar HS). Evan is an energizer bunny, always ready to go, said Dunphy. He s always ready and eager to do anything the team needs. MIDDLE BLOCKERS Six middle blockers will be vying for the star ng roll this season, including J.J. Mosolf (Saugus, Calif./Hart HS/Hawaii), Nikola Antonijevic, Leonard Granato, Ma Taran no (Van Nuys, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS), Kyle Suppes (Union City, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) and Mitchell Penning (Peoria, Ill./Westminster Chris an Academy). Mosolf, a reserve opposite in 2013, started every exhibi on match as a middle blocker. Antonijevic and Granato shared star ng du es last season, while Taran no ended his freshman campaign in 2012 as the Waves starter. He was forced to redshirt last year while rehabilita ng an injury. Mosolf averaged 1.21 kills and 1.00 blocks during the exhibi on season, while Antonijevic led the team against Alberta and Bri sh Columbia with 12 blocks in just eight sets of work. J.J. is a versa le volleyball player, said Dunphy. He can hit quick and he could s ll play opposite and maybe even outside. Nik is steady and we are looking for him to make a jump in his play, Dunphy went on. I don t think he was sa sfied with his play overall at Pepperdine these past two years and he is hungry to be a be er hi er, blocker and server. Granato was a key reserve for the Waves last year, and started the final five matches of the season. Leo s worked hard in the weight room and hopefully that works pays off for him and the team, said Dunphy of the Waves tallest player at 6-foot-9. Taran no is back and healthy. As a freshman, he was an MPSF All-Freshman team selec on and averaged 1.51 kills per set. Pepperdine s depth in the middle con nues with Suppes and Penning. Suppes, a sophomore, saw limited me as a rookie, but according to Dunphy is one of the most improved players in the program right now. Dunphy also sees a lot of promise in Penning, a AVCA Boys High School Senior All-American: He swings with a heavy arm. Good arms are hard to teach and he certainly has one. 4 LIBEROS A strong crop of liberos will be pressed with keeping the Waves serve receive and defense en point in Ryan Plueger averaged 1.49 digs as a junior, second behind Torres. Pepperdine also added Brennan Anderson (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar HS/Ohio State) to its roster. Anderson was a Volleyball Magazine All-American third team pick last year for the Buckeyes. He set Ohio States single-season record with a digs average of Freshman Chad McCallister (Hun ngton Beach, Calif./Marina HS) provides addi onal depth at the posi on. Ryan had a great fall, for sure he s be er now than what he was last year at this me, said Dunphy of his senior. He will be one of the leaders of this team. There is not a be er human being than Ryan Plueger. Dunphy con nued with his transfer: Brennan is a volleyball rat, just constantly surrounds himself with the game. Because of that, he consistently makes the right play. He s also capable of se ng which is valuable. Chad has made some big changes in how he passes and plays defense, and he gives us invaluable depth at that posi on, concluded Dunphy. 7 HEAD COACH MARV DUNPHY 31st Season at Pepperdine Career/School Record: * ( MPSF) Widely recognized as one of the game s premier coaches, Dr. Marv Dunphy has directed Pepperdine to four NCAA men s volleyball tles and is heading into his 31st season as the Waves head coach in Dunphy, who holds a career record of (.694)*, is noted for his highly technical approach to the game and diligent training methods. He was the 2005 Na onal Coach of the Year and is a three- me MPSF Coach of the Year. As a result of his training, 20 different Waves have earned 35 All-American first team accolades. Pepperdine players have been named All-Americans 54 mes under Dunphy s direc on. Nine different athletes have gone on to earn either AVCA or Volleyball Magazine Na onal Player of the Year honors in Bob Ctvrtlik (1985), George Roumain (1998, 1999), Brad Keenan (2002, 2003), Sean Rooney (2004, 2005), Jonathan Winder (2007) and Paul Carroll (2009). With six AVCA Player of the Year selec ons, no other men s program has had more POTY recipients than Pepperdine since the organiza on began issuing the awards in Dunphy has had a long, successful coaching tenure with the U.S. Na onal Team. The American squad maintained a No. 1 world ranking and compiled an impressive overall record of (.864) during his me as coach. Addi onally, the team won every major interna onal tournament: the 1985 World Cup, the 1986 World Championships, the 1987 Pan American Games and, most importantly, the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea. Since then, he has been an assistant coach for the men s team at the 2000 Olympics and a consultant coach at the 1996, 2004 and 2008 Olympics. In 2012, Dunphy served as a consultant coach in London for the silver medal winning women s squad. In the spring of 2011, Dunphy was awarded the U.S. Olympic Achievement Award for his part in helping the U.S. Na onal Team capture gold in Beijing. Nineteen of his Pepperdine volleyball players have represented the U.S. Na onal Team, with 10 taking part in the Olympics. In 1994, Dunphy was formally recognized for his immense contribu on to the sport, as he was inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame in Holyoke, Mass. His 1988 Olympic Team was inducted in the fall of He was also put into the AVCA Hall of Fame in December Among his honors from the FIVB (the Interna onal Volleyball Federa on) are the 1987 Coach of the Year and the 1999 All-Time Great Coaches Award (contemporary division). Also in 1999, he was a finalist for the FIVB s Greatest Coach of the Century Award. Under Dunphy s guidance, the program has received NCAA public recogni on awards for its outstanding APR scores five mes ( , , , and ). A na ve of nearby Topanga Canyon, Dunphy was a middle blocker at Pepperdine during the sport s forma ve years at the intercollegiate level and earned a bachelor s degree in kinesiology from the university in A er comple ng his athle cs eligibility, Dunphy con nued his affilia on with the Pepperdine program, serving as an assistant coach to both Harlan Cohen and Burt DeGroot before assuming the head coaching du es in The following season, Dunphy led Pepperdine to its first-ever NCAA team championship, as the Waves upended UCLA in five games in Columbus, Ohio, to win the na onal crown. Dunphy, who earned a master s degree in physical educa on from USC in 1978, le Pepperdine following the 1978 championship season to obtain his doctorate degree in the same subject area at Brigham Young University. Dunphy completed work for his doctorate in 1981, and then returned to Pepperdine that fall to quickly elevate the program back to na onal tle conten on. Pepperdine advanced to the NCAA tle match in 1983 and 1984, but the Waves were beaten on both occasions by crosstown foe UCLA. However, the de turned for the fabled Malibu Roofing Company in 1985, as Pepperdine rolled to an impressive 25-2 record s ll ed as the best single-season mark in school history and defeated USC in four games at Pauley Pavilion to capture the NCAA tle. The victory proved to be a perfect farewell gi to Dunphy, who took a leave of absence following the 1985 season to immediately begin working with the U.S. Na onal Team at its San Diego base. Under Dunphy s watchful eye, the American squad gained interna onal a en on, and the 12-man roster (which included former Pepperdine standouts Craig Buck, Bob Ctvrtlik, Jeff Stork and Troy Tanner, three of whom were starters) won the gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea. Pepperdine captured its third NCAA championship in 1986 without him, but Dunphy returned to the head coaching posi on in November Upon returning to Malibu, he hit the recrui ng trail and once again rebuilt the program. The Waves reached the pinnacle in 1992, as the team upset Long Beach State to win the MPSF Tournament and then captured its fourth NCAA crown with an impressive three-game sweep of top-ranked Stanford in Muncie, Ind. In 1998, Pepperdine compiled an impressive 23-5 mark and won the MPSF Tournament with a four-game victory over UCLA at Pauley Pavilion. Unfortunately, UCLA gained its revenge in the NCAA tle match, defea ng Pepperdine in three games. During the 1999 campaign the Waves notched a solid 20-5 mark and senior outside hi er George Roumain was tabbed the AVCA Na onal Player of the Year for the second consecu ve season. Roumain was a member of the 2000 Olympic Team along with former Pepperdine players Kevin Barne and Chip McCaw. Dunphy took another 17-month sabba cal in order to serve as an assistant coach with the U.S. Na onal Team at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. He returned to Pepperdine in October In 2003, Pepperdine went 24-6 overall, including 19-3 in the MPSF, advanced to the tle game of the MPSF Tournament and reached the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. There, the Waves suffered a hard-fought five game setback to eventual na onal champion Lewis, which later vacated the tle. In May of 2003, Dunphy was honored as one of four coaches named to the U.S. Volleyball Associa on s Men s All-Era Team. Dunphy served the U.S. Na onal Team in a scou ng and advisory role during the 2003 World Cup in Japan. Pepperdine earned its fi h NCAA tle in the program s history in Pepperdine swept Ohio State in the na onal semifinals before rallying back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat UCLA, 3-2, in the championship match at Pauley Pavilion, capping off its 25-2 season. That year Dunphy was selected as Na onal Coach of the Year for the first me in his career. He also earned MPSF Coach of the Year honors for the second me a er previously picking up the honor in In 2006, Volleyball Magazine selected Dunphy as one of the 30 Most Recognizable Names in Volleyball. Dunphy earned MPSF Coach of the Year honors again in 2007 as the Waves went 26-3 overall, won both the MPSF regular-season and tournament tles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 14th me in school history. During fall 2007, Dunphy rejoined the U.S. Na onal Team for the World Cup in Japan, where he served as team leader. The 2008 Waves made one of their most unexpected runs to the na onal championship match, as they began the postseason as the #5 seed in the MPSF Tournament, but won the event with three straight wins away from home. Pepperdine knocked off Long Beach State in the NCAA semifinals before falling to Penn State in the championship. The Waves finished with a record of and a #2 na onal ranking*. Dunphy was a member of the coaching staff for the 2008 U.S. Olympic squad, which made a remarkable run to the gold medal. One of his former All-Americans, Sean Rooney, was a player on the team. He returned to the London Olympics in 2012, and served as a consultant coach to the silver-medal winning women s team. A popular instructor for Pepperdine University s sports medicine department, Dunphy resides in the Decker Canyon area of Malibu with his wife Su. The couple has two daughters, Karen and Alexandra, and one son, Dijon. Alexandra won a na onal championship as a member of the USC women s volleyball team and is currently serving as an assistant coach at the University of Miami (FL). Marv and Su also have three grandchildren, Hunter, Shay and Trent. *Pepperdine later vacated all wins (66), NCAA Tournament loses (1), Mountain Pacific Sports Federa on tournament tles (1) and NCAA Tournament appearances (1) accrued during the 2008, 09, 10 and 11 seasons due to self-reported NCAA viola ons. Records marked with an asterisk do not reflect this.
