4 SCOUTING INDIANA ABOUT THE HOOSIERS Indiana (7-11-1) enters Friday s semifinal on a roll following its first two-game winning streak and first overtime victory of the season in the Big Ten quarterfinals against Michigan, 2-1. The high-powered Hoosier offense touts 33 goals, which ranks second in the conference. Ten different Hoosiers have tallied two or more goals and the offense received a boost on Friday with the return of freshman striker Tommy Thompson, who assisted on the game-winning goal scored by Dylan Mares. Nikita Kotlov and Femi Hollinger-Janzen each have five goals, while Kotlov and AJ Corrado lead the squad with 13 points. Defense hasn t been Indiana s strong suit, giving up a Big Ten high 34 goals in 19 matches. Freshman goalkeeper Colin Webb has received the last two starts, earning two victories including a shutout win over Northwestern. In those two matches, Webb has made 10 saves with one goal allowed. Penn State posted its first shutout at Armstrong Stadium in program history and first victory in Bloomington since In the 15th minute, Grant Warming toe-poked a pass Connor Maloney down the right wing. Maloney was able to race to the end line and get his cross to the top of the six-yard area as Tyler slotted it home past IU goalkeeper Michael Soderlung (three saves). The goal was Tyler s second of the season, while Warming and Maloney picked up their first and fourth assists of the season, respectively. Warming was again in the midst of Penn State s offense 10 minutes later as he sent a pass off an Indiana defender to Griffith, who one touched to his right foot and lofted an 18-yard shot into the upper right corner of the goal for a 2-0 lead. The two-assist game was the first for Warming in his career for the Blue and White. Griffith s first goal of the year provided Penn State s first two-goal game against the Hoosiers since a 2-1 win in the 2010 Big Ten Tournament at Jeffrey Field. That game also represented the last time PSU defeated Indiana as the series now stands at all-time in favor of IU. Andrew Wolverton was put to work most of the game, stopping a point-blank Patrick Doody effort in the 44th minute and a pushing aside AJ Corrado s 20-yard blast in the 69th minute. The biggest save came in the 56th minute when Wolverton was able to save Tommy Thompson s penalty kick attempt and stave off any Hoosier momentum. COMMON ENEMIES Penn State and Indiana have faced six common opponents this season, five within the Big Ten and one non-conference squad (West Virginia) PSU went in those matches, while Indiana went PSU INDIANA Michigan W, 3-1 L, 1-2 Michigan State W, 2-1 (2OT) L, 2-3 (2OT) Northwestern W, 2-1 (2OT) W, 3-0 Ohio State L, 0-1 (2OT) W, 2-0 West Virginia W, 2-1 L, 4-5 (2OT) Wisconsin W, 3-1 L, 3-4 PENN STATE FALLS AT AKRON The Nittany Lions were eight minutes from their first win over the ninth-ranked Zips since 2004, but a free kick forced overtime before another free kick tally late in the second overtime gave Akron the hard-fought 2-1 victory on Wednesday, Nov. 6. Freshman midfielder Connor Maloney finished a fabulous half-volley from 25 yards out to stake Penn State a 1-0 lead five minutes from halftime. The tally was set up by a beautiful cross from Shane Campbell. The goal was Maloney s first collegiate marker. In the second half, Akron supplied all the pressure and eventually broke through on Aodhan Quinn s 83rd-minute free kick. The Nittany Lions played the final 7:34 of regulation and all 15:24 of overtime with just 10 men following a red card. Quinn won the game in the 106th minute with another free kick goal. Andrew Wolverton matched his career high with nine saves. ONE OR NONE STREAK BROKEN During Penn State s incredible run from Sept. 13-Oct. 29, a staple of the Nittany Lions was defense. In fact, until the Akron loss on Nov. 6, Penn State had allowed more than a single goal just once all year, a rare 4-1 loss at Rutgers on Sept. 6. Penn State had kept opponents to one goal or less in 15 of 16 games prior to Akron as Penn State surged to a record. FREE SOCCER Penn State has featured in six overtime contests this year, all of them requiring two extra frames. The Nittany Lions are in overtime this season with four of the past five matches being decided by free soccer. The last two visits to Ohio have been unkind with Penn State returning to Happy Valley with overtime losses, a trend the Nittany Lions look to shake on Friday. IN THE RANKINGS On Tuesday, Oct. 15, Penn State received its first national ranking from the NSCAA, checking at No. 17, which was the first NSCAA ranking since Sept. 25, Two weeks ago, Penn State vaulted up to 9th, but has since fallen to 16th this week. In the NCAA RPI released Oct. 28, Penn State moved up to No. 5. This week, Penn State checks in at 12th in the RPI. DEFYING THE ODDS Penn State was picked fifth in the preseason Big Ten coaches poll and went unranked and unvoted in the NSCAA preseason poll. BIG TEN NETWORK SCHEDULE Penn State is scheduled to be featured on the Big Ten Network at least three times this season. The Lions were first on national television when they traveled to preseason No. 1 Indiana on Oct. 6 and beat the defending NCAA champions, 2-0. The Blue and White returned to the national spotlight in a home match against Northwestern three weekends ago in a thrilling 2-1 victory. Penn State will appear on BTN at least once more with the Nittany Lions semifinal match on Friday, Nov. 15 shown live at Noon against the Hoosiers. Should Penn State advance to the final, Penn State will appear on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. HEARTBREAK IN COLUMBUS The No. 9 Penn State men s soccer team rattled off a season-high 27 shots, but couldn t solve the riddle that was Ohio State, falling 1-0 in double overtime to the Buckeyes on Saturday night (Nov. 2) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Of the 27 shots, Penn State put six on frame but couldn t slide any past OSU s Alex Ivanov. Nevertheless, a counter attack by Danny Jensen down the right flank beat Andrew Wolverton to the far post and Ohio State came out on top. The loss ended Penn State s quest for a perfect Big Ten season. NOT PENN DEFEATS THE QUAKERS Penn State s first trip to Rhodes Field in three years was identical to its 2010 visit -- a 2-1 win on Tuesday night (Oct. 29). Eli Dennis tallied a 64th-minute goal to put Penn State ahead before the Quakers got one back in the 73rd minute. Nevertheless, Shane Campbell bagged the game-winner with six minutes remaining as he sent home a Mason Klerks effort that was initially saved by Penn. Connor Maloney tallied his seventh assist of the year on Dennis goal, while Andrew Wolverton made five saves as Penn State for the ninth time in 10 matches. TYLER S HEROICS CLINCH BIG TEN TITLE No. 13 Penn State defeated No. 19 Northwestern, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in dramatic fashion to earn the program s fifth Big Ten championship. Jordan Tyler scored the game-tying and game-winning goal in overtime for the Nittany Lions. Maloney drew a Wildcat defender at the top of the penalty area and passed a perfectly placed ball to Tyler who sent it into the back of the net for his fifth goal of the year and fourth game-winner. The goal set off a wild celebration as Penn State celebrated its second straight Big Ten title and fifth overall. The victory clinched the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament for the second straight season as well as the Lions look to complete the perfect Big Ten season with a win next week at Ohio State, a feat only accomplished by once before in Penn State men s soccer history (2005). In a nip-and-tuck game, the Northwestern struck first in the 60th minute on a goal from super striker Joey Calistri. Cole Missimo went streaking down the left flank toward the end line and touched a ground pass to Calistri on the near post. The crafty sophomore and the Big Ten s leading scorer back heeled a clever shot into the far right side of the goal for the lead. Penn State went into desperation mode and pressed numbers forward. It took to the eighth shot of the half to capitalize in the waning minutes as Drew Klingenberg, last week s Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, beat his NSCAA RANKINGS (as of Nov. 12, 2013) Rk. TYLER EARNS BIG TEN OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR Redshirt-junior forward Jordan Tyler was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on Monday (Oct. 28) following his two-goal, conference clinching game over Northwestern. Tyler has five goals for the season with four of them coming in game-winning fashion. The redshirt-junior leads the Big Ten during conference play in goals (4), points (8) and game-winning goals (3). Tyler has won the past two games for Penn State in double-overtime following his dramatic winner at Michigan State on Oct. 20 prior to his excellent showing against Northwestern. The honor for Tyler is his first Big Ten accolade of any kind, while Penn State has hauled in six Big Ten weekly honors. 6 has made a career on clean sheets, posting 20 shutouts in 42 career starts. Wolverton set the Penn State single-season record for shutouts as a freshman (12), and is currently fifth on the PSU career shutout list. PENN STATE S COMEBACK VICTORY AT MICHIGAN STATE Down a goal at half, No. 17 Penn State men s soccer came back to defeat No. 14 Michigan State, 2-1, in double overtime Sunday afternoon at DeMartin Stadium. Redshirt-junior striker Jordan Tyler tallied the game winner in the second overtime. Drew Klingenberg notched the equalizer early in the second half, his first collegiate goal. Junior goalkeeper Andrew Wolverton saved a career-high nine shots in the game as Penn State opened up a six-point lead in the Big Ten standings after four matches. The winning moment came 53 seconds into the second overtime when Mike Robinson collected a pass back from Klingenberg on the left wing and swung in a perfectly placed ball to a running Tyler as the Michigan native poked the ball home. The helper was Robinson s second of the season and both assists have come in Big Ten play. LIONS SWEEP BIG TEN WEEKLY AWARDS For the first time since 2006, two Nittany Lions took home Big Ten weekly honors in the same cycle as sophomore midfielder Drew Klingenberg and junior goalkeeper Andrew Wolverton were named Big Ten Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, on Monday afternoon (Oct. 21). Klingenberg tallied three points in the win over Michigan State, while Wolverton made a career-high nine saves. Klingenberg was also named Philly Soccer News Player of the Week, while Wolverton was put on the College Soccer News Team of the Week. David Gray and Conrad Taylor took home offensive and defensive honors on Oct. 23, 2006, but Gray shared his accolade wtih Greg Janicki of MSU. The last time PSU made a complete sweep of the weekly honors was Sept. 15, 2003 when Chad Severs (offensive) and Matt Novchich (defensive) pulled the feat. ROBINSON HONORED BY TDS Junior transfer Mike Robinson, a forward by nature and an accomplished one at that, was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com s Team of the Week on Tuesday (Oct. 22). Robinson logged 101 minutes, tallied an assist on the game-winner by Jordan Tyler and was effective in limiting the dynamic Spartan offense. NITTANY LIONS TRUMP WOLVERINES On a chilly, wet Friday evening (Oct. 11), the Nittany Lions downed Michigan 3-1 and improving its Big Ten record to for the first time since Penn State s three goals matched its season high, a 3-1 win vs. Wisconsin in the Big Ten opener. Martin Seiler opened the scoring by converting a penalty kick, while Grant Warming and Owen Griffith each added a goal apiece in the second half to secure the win. Seiler s spot kick conversion came following a Wolverine hand ball in the 10th minute, while Griffith scored his second of the year on a Connor Maloney offering in the 48th minute. Warming sealed the deal with an 80th minute tally against the run of play off a feed from Drew Klingenberg. Warming s goal was the first of his career and his fourth point in the past two matches. Andrew Wolverton made three saves for Penn State. SEILER WINS BIG TEN WEEKLY HONOR Redshirt-senior defender Martin Seiler was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon (Oct. 14). The first-place Nittany Lions got off on the right foot against the Wolverines as Seiler put away a 10th-minute penalty kick for an early lead. From there, Seiler s excellent defending kept Michigan at bay for most of the match. It wasn t until the final seven minutes, and with Penn State holding a 3-0 lead, did Michigan tally a goal. For Seiler, the award is his first recognition by the league office. WOLVERTON NAMED BIG TEN DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Following Sunday s historic shutout of defending NCAA champion Indiana, junior goalkeeper Andrew Wolverton was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. Wolverton made five saves in the 2-0 win over Indiana including a critical penalty-kick stop of Tommy Thompson in the second half. Wolverton also made a point-blank save near the conclusion of the first half and another sprawling save with 20 minutes remaining on a long-range Hoosier effort. The shutout was Penn State s first at Armstrong Stadium and the first win at Indiana since For Wolverton, it was his fifth clean sheet and 20th career shutout in blue and white. Wolverton added a save in Wednesday s match against Saint Francis as well. For the week, Wovlerton posted a 0.47 goalsagainst average with an.857 save percentage in two games. RED FLASH COME OUT ON TOP The Nittany Lion men s soccer team was unable to take advantage of its offensive opportunities and dropped a hard-fought 1-0 doubleovertime match to Saint Francis on Wednesday night (Oct. 2) at Jeffrey Field. Despite holding a 17-7 edge in shots and finding twice as many shots on net as the Red Flash, Penn State was unable to find the game-winner. Ultimately, a long ball on a counter attack from SFU led to a misplay back to the goalkeeper, allowing SFU s Ryan Byers to tap home the winner and earn the Red Flash s first win over Penn State in 11 tries. The match nearly ended with five minutes to go in regulation when Penn State s Owen Griffith had an open look in front of net, but his header didn t have enough juice and SFU goalkeeper Daniel Valcicak made the diving save. With the game deadlocked at one through 77 minutes, Shane Campbell beat his defender down the right wing and passed a ball to the near post to a running Jordan Tyler. The crafty redshirt-junior beat his defender and crossed a ball in front of the net that was knocked in by the Wisconsin defense for an own goal and a 2-1 Penn State lead. Five minutes later Penn State salted the game away as Randy Falk sent a beautiful cross to a running Dennis on the left side of the penalty area for the final 3-1 score line. The goal was Dennis second of the year and Falk s first assist. Connor Maloney set the play up as Falk made an overlapping run on the right wing. LIONS COMPLETE COMEBACK WIN Penn State went down a goal to West Virginia in the opening five minutes, but recovered behind goals from Shane Campbell and Jordan Tyler in a 2-1 victory on Wednesday night (Sept. 25). Campbell tallied his first collegiate goal in the 12th minute, while Tyler supplied the heroics in the 71st, his first goal since Sept. 9, Grant Warming, Mason Klerks and Connor Maloney provided assists from the midfield. Andrew Wolverton made four saves as the Nittany Lions earned their third straight victory and are unbeaten in the last four. WADID DOES IT AGAIN A second-half goal from Mark Wadid propelled Penn State past Duquesne, 1-0, on Sunday, Sept. 22 at Jeffrey Field. Eli Dennis dished his second assist of the season on a through ball to the running Wadid as the freshman phenom coolly finished the shot. Andrew Wolverton made two saves for his fourth shutout of the season and move up to fifth all-time at Penn State in the category with 19 clean sheets. WADID PICKS UP TRIO OF HONORS For his two finishes and a perfect team record, Mark Wadid was named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week. Additionally, he was tabbed on the College Soccer News National Team of the Week as well as TopDrawerSoccer.com s Team of the Week. LIONS SHUT DOWN RMU Penn State controlled the pace of play and most of the possession throughout Tuesday night s match (Sept. 17), a 1-0 victory over Robert Morris, at Jeffrey Field. Mark Wadid scored his second goal of the year in the 34th minute for the game-winner. Penn State s early pressure paid off when Mason Klerks played a great through ball from the midfield to Wadid, who shielded his defender well at the top of the penalty area. Wadid took a touch to the right and blasted a shot past a diving Joseph Kuta (two saves) for a 1-0 lead. Penn State held a decisive 17-6 edge in shots with a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Fouls were to Penn State. Andrew Wolverton made two saves to record his 18th career shutout. GUTSY TIE WITH NO. 5 CAL Penn State fought to a 1-1 draw against No. 5 California Friday night (Sept. 13) at Jeffrey Field as it celebrated the life and legacy of Mack Brady in front of an announced crowd of 3,032. Kyle MacDonald sent the Penn State faithful into a frenzy after squaring the game with his first career collegiate goal in the 77th minute. Teammate Owen Griffith laid off a beautiful pass to MacDonald, who struck the ball into the top shelf from 10 yards away. California bagged the opening goal in the 20th minute through Steve Birnbaum s header. Cal held a edge in shots and a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal. Andrew Wolverton pushed away four California attempts on net. MACK BRADY MEMORIAL GAME Penn State men s soccer and the surrounding community celebrated the life and legacy of Mack Brady on Friday night. Brady passed away on Dec. 31, 2012 due to an unexpected blood infection at the age of eight. To honor his life and love for soccer (specifically goalkeeping), Mack s parents, Christian and Elizabeth Brady, created the Mack Brady Memorial Soccer Fund. The fund is an endowment for Penn State goalkeepers to help in recruiting, equipment, scholarships and other needs. RED STORM DEFEAT LIONS Penn State fell to No. 23 St. John s, 1-0, in Queens, N.Y. Sunday night as the Red Storm scored the game-winner in the 43rd minute. The Nittany Lions looked strong in the opening frame, but could not break the St. John s defense. The Red Storm goal just before the halftime break gave the hosts a momentum boost into the second half as it continued to generate opportunities. The Blue & White had a chance to square the game in the 88th minute, but Jordan Tyler s header was saved. DENNIS DOWNS BLUE DEVILS After firing 19 shots through the first 80 minutes of action, Penn State finally broke through against Central Connecticut on the 20th as junior Eli Dennis nodded the game-winner into the back of the net. It was the first career goal at Jeffrey Field for Dennis, who received the ball on a perfect cross from freshman Connor Maloney. The Blue Devils managed just one shot on goal in the match. WADID DELIVERS Freshman Mark Wadid became the first Penn State rookie to score in a season-opener since Aug. 31, 2001 (Chad Severs) when he drilled a shot inside the near post against Radford. The 69th minute strike proved to be the gamewinner, as the Nittany Lions held on for the victory. Goalkeeper Andrew Wolverton made five saves in the game. FRESHMEN SHINE Desperate to fill an offensive void after the loss of 10 seniors, Penn State has welcomed the strong play of rookies Mark Wadid, Connor Maloney and Mason Klerks. Wadid has been a major factor at the forward position, while Maloney has been a revelation at right wing. Klerks, meanwhile, has had featured in central midfield for most of the season. COACHING CLOUT Among the elite coaches in the sports for the last three decades, head coach Bob Warming is back for his fourth season at Penn State. Warming has an incredible coaching pedigree, including 417 career Division I victories -- fifth all-time among active DI coaches. He was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2012 after leading PSU to the league title. B1G DISTINGUISHED SCHOLARS Current Penn State players, Kyle MacDonald and Danny Sheerin, were named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars on July 10. The distinction is an incredible honor, as studentathletes are required to have a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher for the academic year. NITTANY LION ATHLETICS GoPSUsports.com 7

10 Head Coach Bob WARMING Fourth Year at Penn State Berea College 75 CAREER RECORD: PSU Record: Appointed the 11th head coach in the history of the Penn State men s soccer program on May 24, 2010, Bob Warming has made an immediate impact in his first three seasons at the helm of the Nittany Lions. The veteran coach guided the team to the Big Ten Tournament championship game in 2010 and 2011, before winning a share of the regular season conference championship in 2012 and earning Big Ten Coach of the Year honors for his efforts. Following a pair of strong seasons to begin his career at PSU, Warming s 2012 squad accumulated a conference record to capture the team s first Big Ten regular season championship in seven years. The Nittany Lions held opponents to just over one goal per game during the season, as they went unbeaten in their final four regular season conference contests. The 2011 campaign presented a major milestone for Warming as he became the 31st NCAA Division I men s soccer head coach to capture 400 career victories after the Nittany Lions downed Florida International, 1-0, in the team s fourth game of the season on Sept. 4. Penn State struggled through the Big Ten regular season, but hit its stride in the conference tournament, earning the distinction of being the first No. 7 seed to reach the title game. The Nittany Lions switched roles from a high-powered offense in 2010 to a shutdown defense in The team allowed just 14 goals, the fewest since the 1977 squad surrended 12 scores. Rookie goalkeeper Andrew Wolverton set school records for the most shutouts in a season (12) and led the Big Ten in GAA (0.60) and save percentage (.821). Warming led the Lions to 14 wins in 2011, the most by a PSU team since 2002, a Big Ten Tournament title game appearance and to the program s first NCAA postseason victory in five years. Penn State boasted one of the nation s most prolific offenses in 2010, totaling 144 points (45 goals, 54 assists) in 23 games. Corey Hertzog posted the most productive season by a Nittany Lion in 55 years, recording an NCAA-leading 20 goals and 46 points. Matheus Braga led the nation and shattered the Big Ten single season record in assists, registering 17. Both players earned NSCAA second team All-American honors. Also successful in the classroom, Penn State received the NSCAA Team Academic Achievement Award in 2010, earning the honor with a 3.07 team GPA. Warming s three-plus decades as a head coach have been signified by distinction, achievement and success. The six-time finalist for National Coach of the Year holds a lofty place in the NCAA record book, ranking sixth among active Division I head coaches and 15th in Division I history with 406 victories. Warming is also one of only two active coaches in Division I to take two different programs to the College Cup. Warming, whose distinguished career spans 35 years, came to Happy Valley from Creighton University, where he took over a previously dormant program and developed it into a conference and regional power and national title contender. In 14 total years in Omaha, served in two different stints ( , ), Warming, the winningest coach in program history, led the Bluejays to 190 victories, seven Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament championships, 11 NCAA Championship appearances, and the 2002 College Cup. His teams proved nearly unbeatable at home, compiling a record in Omaha. In recognition of his dominance in league play, Warming, a three-time Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year honoree, was named the MVC All-Centennial Team Coach in An ardent believer in giving back through charitable works, Warming s 2009 Creighton squad won the community service award for performing over 1,500 hours of volunteer activities, including working on Habitat for Humanity projects, reading to elementary school students, and helping out at hospitals. Warming has also served as the honorary chairman of the Boy Scouts of America for Nebraska and as the honorary chairman of the Omaha Children s Crisis Center annual fund raiser. Warming has not only built successful teams on the field, but also assisted with the design, fundraising, and construction management of three collegiate soccer stadiums, including, most recently, the $13 million, 6,000-seat, state-of-the-art Michael G. Morrison, S.J., Stadium at Creighton. He and his winning teams helped fill the stands at Morrison Stadium, as Creighton led the MVC and ranked in the NCAA top 10 in attendance each of the past seven seasons. In honor of significant contributions made to the athletic program at the university, Warming was inducted into the Creighton Athletics Hall of Fame in April 2011, becoming just the seventh head coach to earn the honor in its 43-year history. In between his tenures at Creighton, Warming served as head coach at Saint Louis University, where he guided it to four Conference USA championships, three NCAA Championship berths and the 1997 College Cup. His Billiken teams also finished ranked in the top 20 in all four seasons. Warming also previously held head coaching positions at Old Dominion (1996), Charlotte ( ), Berry College ( ), and Transylvania University (1976). His career coaching record stands at an impressive (.655). Warming has also produced numerous professional prospects, as at least one of his players has been selected in every MLS SuperDraft or supplemental draft. He has seen a total of 28 of his players drafted since the league s inception in Most recently, John Gallagher was selected with the 30th pick in the second round of the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft. In 2011, Corey Hertzog was selected by the New York Red Bulls with the No. 13 pick in the first round of the SuperDraft, while Drew Cost was a supplemental draft choice of Real Salt Lake. A 1975 graduate of Berea College (Ky.), Warming was a four-sport varsity letterwinner, starring on the golf, swimming, tennis, and soccer teams. As a starting goalkeeper, he posted a record. Warming also holds a master s of science degree in sport administration from Eastern Kentucky University. Warming and his wife, Cindy, have four children Emily, Bess, and twins Grant and the late Audrey.
