Penn State will play a mid-week non-conference match against James Madison Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. before kicking off Big Ten play against Indiana Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. Tuesday s match against the Dukes will be featured on BTN Plus on BTN2Go, while Sunday s match against the Hoosiers will be on the Big Ten Network. NITTANY LIONS LOOKING FOR FIRST WIN OVER JMU SINCE 1998 Penn State and James Madison have met six times in the history of the two squads with the Dukes holding the advantage in the all-time series. The history between the two squads has always been fierce as last season, the Nittany Lions suffered two red card ejections and were forced to play with nine players in the field for most of the match. Regardless of the disadvantage, Penn State was able to play the Dukes to a 1-1 draw using a Connor Maloney goal in the 10thminute of the match. Despite two ties in the past three meetings, the Nittany Lions have not been able to come away victorious over the Dukes since the 1998 season when they took a 1-0 win in a neutral site match. NITTANY LIONS HELD SCORELESS AT TEMPLE For the first time in the young season, Penn State was unable to find the back of the net, falling in a 2-0 contest to the Owls of Temple University Friday, Sept. 4. Temple got out to an early lead over Penn State with a goal in the 10th-minute before extending its lead to 2-0 in the second half of the match. The Nittany Lions were unable to generate much offense throughout the 90 minutes, putting just three shots on goal. Goalkeeper Matt Bersano made five saves on the afternoon for Penn State, while Mac Curran put two shots on net. BIG TEN STANDINGS THREE PLAYERS MAKE DEBUTS AT TEMPLE Junior Christian Kashak made his first appearance of the 2015 season, while junior transfer Malik Cameron and redshirtfreshman Noah Pilato made their first-ever appearance in a Penn State uniform Friday afternoon against Temple. NO REST FOR THE BACKLINE Transfers Matt Bersano and Robby Sagel have found a place in the backline for the Nittany Lions and have yet to take a break in the 2015 season. Bersano has started all three matches in net for Penn State, posting one shut out and earning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors, while Sagel has started all three matches on defense. The two transfers are the only two Nittany Lions who have played all 290 minutes of action this season, while Dani Marks has played 284 minutes for Penn State and Brian James has played 281 minutes. A BRIEF GLANCE AT THE NUMBERS Penn State has struggled to find the back of the net as of late, scoring just one goal in the past two matches. The Nittany Lions have put nine shots on net in the first three matches, but have allowed opponents to score three goals, while they have doubled Penn State s shots on goal with 18. The Nittany Lions carry a.643 shots on goal percentage into the mid-week match, while opponents hold a.474 shots on goal percentage. FINDING GOALS LATE IN THE MATCH Penn State s two goals this season have both come in the second match. In the first two matches of the season, the Nittany Lions took a 0-0 draw into the locker room at halftime before coming out and scoring the first goals of the match. Although Penn State was unable to net a goal against Temple, two of the three shots on goal were in the second half for the Nittany Lions. Pl. Team Big Ten Pts. Pct. GF GA GD Overall Pct. 9 2015 PENN STATE BOB WARMING Head Coach Sixth Year BEREA COLLEGE 75 PENN STATE RECORD (.626) OVERALL RECORD (.655) Entering his sixth season as Penn State s 11th coach in its storied history, Bob Warming has made his impact known in his first five years. Twice named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013 by leading the Nittany Lions to back-to-back Big Ten titles, Warming has added a pair of trips to the NCAA Sweet 16 (2010, 2013), and has led the Lions to three straight postseason appearances was a banner year for Warming and his Nittany Lions as they won 13 matches for the second straight year, going overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten. They also recorded their 800th win in program history over Penn (Sept. 24), with a 6-2 win at Jeffrey Field. The team got out to a sizzling start, it s best ever and won seven straight matches for the first time since Senior goalie Andrew Wolverton continued to impress amassing nine total shutouts to set a new career record with 32. He was also given All-Big Ten Second Team honors following his final campaign. PSU was led by sophomore standout Connor Maloney who was tops in points (23) and goals (10) and was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year for his efforts. After falling to Michigan State in the B1G Tournament quarterfinals, Penn State received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and hosted Hartwick at Jeffrey Field. The Lions defeated the Hawks 2-1 to move onto the second round for the third consecutive season before succumbing to No. 9 seed Syracuse 2-1, on the road. In 2013, Warming s charges relied on stout defense, timely scoring and guile to capture its fifth Big Ten regular-season title in outright fashion. Ultimately, the Nittany Lions won NCAA Tournament games against St. Francis Brooklyn and 10th-seeded UC Santa Barbara to reach the Sweet 16. The Lions finished with a record and a mark in Big Ten play. Following a pair of strong seasons to begin his career at PSU, Warming s 2012 squad accumulated a conference record to capture the team s first Big Ten regular season championship in seven years. The Nittany Lions held opponents to just over one goal-per-game during the season, as they went unbeaten in their final four regular season conference contests. The 2011 campaign presented a major milestone for Warming as he became the 31st NCAA Division I men s soccer head coach to capture 400 career victories after the Nittany Lions downed Florida International, 1-0, in the team s fourth game of the season. Penn State struggled through the Big Ten regular season, but hit its stride in the conference tournament, earning the distinction of being the first No. 7 seed to reach the title game. The Nittany Lions switched roles from a high-powered offense in 2010 to a shutdown defense in The team allowed just 14 goals, the fewest since the 1977 squad surrended 12 scores. Rookie goalkeeper Andrew Wolverton set school records for the most shutouts in a season (12) and led the Big Ten in GAA (0.60) and save percentage (.821). Warming led the Lions to 14 wins in 2011, the most by a PSU team since 2002, a Big Ten Tournament title game appearance, and the program s first NCAA postseason victory in five years. Penn State boasted one of the nation s most prolific offenses in 2010, totaling 144 points (45 goals, 54 assists) in 23 games. Junior forwardcorey Hertzog posted the most productive season by a Nittany Lion in 55 years, recording an NCAA-leading 20 goals and 46 points. Senior midfielder Matheus Braga led the nation and shattered the Big Ten single season record in assists, registering 17. Both players earned NSCAA Second Team All-America honors. Also successful in the classroom, Penn State received the NSCAA Team Academic Achievement Award in 2010, earning the honor with a 3.07 team GPA. Warming s three-plus decades as a head coach have been marked by distinction, achievement, and success. The six-time finalist for national coach of the year and 2008 winner of the award (according to FieldTurf Tarkett) holds a lofty place in the NCAA record book, ranking third among active Division I head coaches and ninth in Division I history with 428 victories. Warming is also one of only two active coaches in Division I to take two different programs to the College Cup. Warming, whose distinguished career spans 35 years, came to Happy Valley from Creighton University, where he took over a previously dormant program and developed it into a conference and regional power and national title contender. In 14 total years in Omaha, served in two different stints ( , ), Warming, the winningest coach in program history, led the Bluejays to 190 victories, seven Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament championships, 11 NCAA Championship appearances, and the 2002 College Cup. His teams proved nearly unbeatable at home, compiling a record in Omaha. In recognition of his dominance in league play, Warming, a three-time Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year honoree, was named the MVC All-Centennial Team Coach in An ardent believer in giving back through charitable works, Warming s 2009 Creighton squad won the community service award for performing over 1500 hours of volunteer activities, including working on Habitat for Humanity projects, reading to elementary school students, and helping out at hospitals. Warming has also served as the honorary chairman of the Boy Scouts of America for Nebraska and as the honorary chairman of the Omaha Children s Crisis Center annual fund raiser. Warming has not only built successful teams on the field, but also assisted with the design, fundraising, and construction management of three collegiate soccer stadiums, including, most recently, the $13 million, 6,000-seat, state-of-the-art Michael G. Morrison, S.J., Stadium at Creighton. He and his winning teams helped fill the stands at Morrison Stadium, CAREER HIGHLIGHTS SIX-time finalist for NCAA Division I National Coach of the Year (1991, 1992, 1993, 2002, 2005, 2008) 2012 & 2013 Big Ten Coach of the Year Ranks THIRD among active Division I Coaches in Victories (441) Ranks NINTH all-time in victories by a Division I Coach Missouri Valley Conference All-Centennial Team Coach (2006) THREE-time MVC Coach of the Year (1992, 1993, 2008) SEVEN MVC regular season championships (1992, 1993, 1994, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008) 18 NCAA Tournament appearances ( , , 2010, 2013, 2014) Led Saint Louis (1997) and Creighton (2002) to College Cup (One of two active coaches to take two different teams to the College Cup) 1993 Soccer News National Coach of the Year 2008 FieldTurf Tarkett National Coach of the Year 2009 Omaha Sports Hall of Fame Inductee 2011 Creighton Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee 31 Winning Seasons
