After opening their week with a non-conference match at New Mexico State, the Lobos (11-10, 3-5 MW) are back in Johnson Center as they face the Mountain West s top two teams in second-ranked Wyoming and league-leading Colorado State. UNM faces off against the Cowgirls (11-9, 6-2 MW) at 7 p.m. Thursday and the Rams (18-2, 8-0) at 2 p.m. Saturday. This week s slate is of paramount importance for the Lobos as they enter the second half of conference play. Heading into this week s action, UNM is in a six-way tie for last place in the league. But the Lobos nonetheless finds themselves just a game out of third place. Undoubtedly a product of immense parity in the conference beyond Colorado State, the jam in the standings provides UNM an avenue to ascend the rankings. Two wins would put the Lobos at an even.500 in the Mountain West with eight league matches remaining. The key battles for the Lobos have been hitting percentage, assists, digs and blocks. In all of their 11 wins this season, the Lobos were able to win the battle in at least two of those categories. In seven of their 10 losses, they were outperformed in all four categories. Nelson eyes Win No th-year New Mexico head coach Jeff Nelson currently owns a record with the UNM volleyball team and is on the cusp of earning his 200th victory indoor with the Lobos. This week, the Lobos host Mountain West foes Colorado State and Wyoming inside Johnson Center in Albuquerque. Once he picks up one more win, Nelson will become just the second coach in program history to reach the No. 200 win milestone. Laurel Brassey Iversen ( , ) compiled a record over her 17-year career in Albuquerque. Like Brassey Iversen, Nelson has the opportunity to reach 200 career wins in his 11th season as the UNM head coach. Brassey Iversen earned win No. 200 in her 303rd match. UNM s lone senior, Ashley Kelsey, is moving up the program s top 10 for career digs; currently sits fifth. Redondo Dr. & Stanford Dr. News and notes Lobos do Love Pink New Mexico s match vs. Fresno State on October 14 served as the team s Lobos Love Pink game. The Lobos, who won 3-1, wore pink jerseys in support of cancer awareness and also held both a silent auction and a raffle to benefit the UNM Cancer Research Center. UNM collected $2,684 from both the auction and raffle, and will donate that to the UNM Foundation. The Lobos may also want to stick with the pink jerseys, considering their success in them. New Mexico has hosted a match in support of breast cancer research each of the last 10 season, going 9-1 in those matches. UNM s only loss in their pink match was to Wyoming in Digging her way up the record books Heading into the final five weeks of the season, redshirt senior Ashley Kelsey has moved into the program s top 10 in career digs. As of October 14, the Ewa Beach, Hawaii, native owns 1,329 career digs, ranking her fifth in program history. During the Lobos mid-september trip to Toledo, Ohio, for the Blue/Gold Invitational, Kelsey moved past former teammate Julia Warren (1,201 digs). Another former teammate, Miquella Lovato is next up for Kelsey on her ascent of the record book. Lovato, who played from , sits fourth all-time with 1,397 digs, just 68 ahead of Kelsey. Allison Buck, who played from , owns the program record with 1,630 career digs. Mashing Mimi Through the first month of Mountain West play, redshirt junior middle blocker Mariessa Carrasco has been a big highlight for the Lobos on offense. Heading into the fifth week of Mountain West play, Carrasco is seventh in the league in hitting percentage, converting at a.311 clip with 172 kills and 49 errors on 395 total attempts. She is the only player among the 10 players leading the MW in hitting to have over 150 kills and under 50 errors. Her career-best.571 attack percentage against Tennessee Tech ( ) is tied for the sixthbest percentage in the MW this season. Carrasco has also been putting up a solid number of kills, registering a career-best three straight matches with double-digit putaways from October Carrasco had a career-best 15 kills at San Jose State on Oct. 7 before logging 12 vs. San Diego State on Oct. 12 and 11 vs. Fresno State on Oct New Mexico volleyball 3 Sitting Twitty With four outside hitters graduated from the Lobos 2016 team, sophomore Lauren Twitty has taken over as one of the team s primary offensive weapons. The Broadlands, Virginia, native currently averages 3.72 kill/set for the Lobos, good for third in the Mountain West. She s hit 20 kills twice this season, including a masterful 25-kill showing vs. Wyoming on September 23. She also posted 20 kills vs. Tennessee Tech on September 16 and 19 kills against vs. Portland on September 8 and at Nevada on October 5. Twitty has logged the team high in kills on 15 different occasions through the team s first 21 matches. Twitty is also ranked third in the conference in points, averaging 4.23/set. Can you Dig it? New Mexico s lone senior, Ashley Kelsey, is currently anchoring the team s defense in the back row, collecting 3.96 digs/set this season. Her average places her sixth in the Mountain West this season. Kelsey logged 25 digs in the Lobos seasonopening sweep of Nebraska Omaha. Those 25 digs are the most by a Lobo in a three-set match since 2013, when Miquella Lovato equaled that number in a sweep of Utah State on October 4, Within the Mountain West, Kelsey s 25 digs vs. Omaha are the highest number of digs in a three-set match this season. She also posted solid numbers against Portland (21 digs), Youngstown State (20) and Toledo (20). Ride, Hailey, Ride Freshman Hailey Rubino showed her worth to the Lobos in the early goings of the season, racking up 69 kills tied for second-best on the team and 77 digs third-best through the first three weeks of action. During that opening stretch of the season, Rubino was the only Lobo with three straight matches of at least 10 kills. However, in New Mexico s 3-2 win over Portland on September 8, Rubino broke a bone in her right foot, sidelining her for four matches and relegating her to just back-row duty for another five matches. But the Leesburg, Virginia, product returned to the front row in the Lobos October 12 match vs. San Diego State and player full rotation in the following match vs. Fresno State.

In matches where Rubino tallies at least nine kills and hits over.200, the Lobos are undefeated. Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi Freshman Yasmin Tan has come into her own over the last few weeks of action, putting up solid number for the Lobos at the pins. The Melbourne, Australia, native had a strong stretch to close September and open October, either matching or setting a new career high in kills in four straight matches. Tan started with a six-kill performance in the Lobos sweep of Utah State on September 30 before setting a new PR with eight kills on October 5 at Nevada. The following match on October 7 at San Jose State, Tan equaled that mark, notching eight putaways on a then-career best.300 hitting percentage. However, Tan put up her best offensive performance against San Diego State on October 12, registering a career-high nine kills on a career-best.400 rate. Day and Night Some statistical splits make sense for a volleyball team. If you hit more than your opponent, you ll probably win most of the those games. If you win the first set, you ll probably manage to score two more for a victory. But one split for the Lobos doesn t necessarily meet expectation. Through the first eight weeks of action, New Mexico is 9-3 in day matches, while on 2-7 in night matches. During the daytime, the Lobos have only lost to North Dakota, Northern Colorado and San Jose State, while only winning against Portland and UTEP during the night. Young guns With nine freshmen on the roster, the 2017 edition of New Mexico volleyball is quite young. But how young is quite young? The Lobos nine freshmen is tied for the sixthmost in Division I volleyball, which comprises 334 teams. 12 teams have at least nine freshmen, with seven of those teams Air Force, Louisiana-Lafayette, Wake Forest, TCU, Illinois, Arkansas and UNM belonging to Power Five/Group of Five conferences. However, when UNM s entire roster composition is taken into account, the Lobos nine freshmen on a 16-player roster ranks as the fifth-highest percentage of freshmen in Division I New Mexico volleyball 4 Only Alcorn State (70 percent), Southern Utah (62 percent), Mountain West foe UNLV (62 percent) and Holy Cross (61 percent) have more than UNM s 56 percent of freshmen. Twitty Captures MW Offensive Player of the Week Honors For the second straight week, the Mountain West has named New Mexico volleyball player as MW Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week, with Lauren Twitty earning on September 25 the distinction for matches played through September 23. Twitty, a sophomore outside hitter from Broadlands, Virginia, helped guide the Lobos (9-5 overall, 1-1 MW) to a 1-1 record as the team opened conference play on the road at No. 23 Colorado State and Wyoming. Twitty posted 39 kills over six sets, with just five errors on 87 total attempts for a hitting percentage of.391. She averaged 6.50 kills per set as New Mexico defeated Wyoming and fell to Colorado State. In the Lobos road sweep of the Cowgirls on September 23, Twitty powered New Mexico s offense, logging a career-best 25 kills on a career-best.442 attack percentage ( ) She also posted 10 digs vs. Wyoming for her sixth double-double of the season. Against No. 23 Colorado State, Twitty finished with 14 kills on a.314 hitting percentage ( ). On the week, she totaled 44.0 points (39 kills, 1 service ace, 4 total blocks) to average 7.33 points per set. She finished with the game high in points in both of UNM s matches, notching 17 vs. CSU (14k, 1sa, 2tb) and 27 vs. Wyoming (25k, 2tb). This is Twitty s first career MW player of the week honor and the team s second straight offensive honor after Mariessa Carrasco earned the selection last week. Twitty s and Carrasco s honors are just the second time in program history two players earned a weekly honor from the MW in back-toback weeks. In the final two weeks of the 2015 season, Hannah Johnson and Skye Gullatt were named Offensive and Defensive players of the week, respectively. Carrasco Earns MW Offensive Player of the Week Honors New Mexico volleyball player Mariessa Carrasco was named the Mountain West Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week on September 18 for matches played through September 16. Carrasco, a redshirt junior middle blocker from San Angelo, Texas, led the Lobos offensively as they closed out the tournament portion of their non-conference schedule with a 2-1 record at the Blue/Gold Invitational in Toledo, Ohio. Carrasco posted 30 kills in Toledo, hitting.456 over the team s three matches with just four errors on 57 total attempts. She averaged 2.73 kills/set as UNM beat Youngstown State and Tennessee Tech. In the Lobos 3-1 win over Tennessee Tech, Carrasco tallied a career high-tying 12 kills, hitting a career-best.571 ( ). That match was her first errorless match since November 3, 2016 at Wyoming (5-0-11) and the first errorless match in her career with at least 10 kills. Her.571 success rate is also the fourth-best in the Mountain West this season, and the only errorless statline among the league s top 10 performances. She scored the set-winning kills in both sets three and four as UNM won both sets Against Youngstown State, she added 10 kills on another.571 ( ) hitting percentage. For her efforts on the week, she named to the Blue/Gold Invitational All-Tournament Team, the first such honor of her career. This is Carrasco s first career MW player of the week honor and the team s first since Devanne 2017 New Mexico volleyball 5 Sours was selected on Oct. 31, Carrasco is the first Lobo middle blocker to earn Offensive Player of the Week since the MW changed the system in 2015 to honor both an offensive and defensive player. Skye Gullatt was Defensive Player of the Week in 2015, while Ashley Rhoades earned what was then just Player of the Week honors in Lobos go 2-1 at Blue/Gold Invite, Carrasco and Twitty All-Tourney New Mexico capped the tournament portion of its non-conference schedule with a 2-1 showing at the Blue/Gold Invitational in Toledo, Ohio from September It was the Lobos fourth 2-1 weekend to open the season. To open the weekend, UNM faced off against Youngstown State for the second time in as many weeks. Winning 25-21, 25-19, 25-18, the Lobos virtually duplicated their performance from two weeks prior when they swept YSU to open the Glory Road Invitational in El Paso, Texas. Mariessa Carrasco led the way with 10 kills. However, New Mexico struggled in its following match, dropping a four-set match to Toledo 21-25, 25-23, 22-25, Despite a double-double from Lauren Twitty and three players registering double-digit digs, the Lobos struggled to find sustained consistency with starting freshman outside hitter Hailey Rubino sidelined due to injury UNM did end the tournament on a positive, capturing a four-set win over Tennessee Tech behind strong play from Twitty (20 kills), Carrasco (12) and Carly Beddingfield (10). The Lobos won 25-15, 24-26, 25-17, For their efforts, Carrasco and Twitty were both named to the Blue/Gold Invitational All- Tournament Team. Carrasco finished with 30 kills on a.453 hitting percentage, while Twitty logged 43 kills on a.238 hitting percentage. It was Carrasco s first such honor in her career and the second overall and in a row for Twitty. Nelson in Mountain West Openers New Mexico head coach Jeff Nelson has played 10 Mountain West openers in his career in Albuquerque, compiling a 4-6 record. However, Nelson has gone 4-1 in league openers since 2012 after opening 0-5 during his first five season with the Lobos. UNM has won its last two conference openers on the road, but the Lobos haven t kicked off league play away from Johnson Center since With New Mexico heading to Colorado State to open the 2017 MW campaign, it s the first time that Nelson and company have ventured to Fort Collins for their league opener since 2007, Nelson s first year at UNM.

For their efforts, two Lobos earned superlative awards at the tournament, with sophomore outside hitter Lauren Twitty earning MVP honors and senior libero Ashley Kelsey claiming Outstanding Libero honors. Twitty posted a team-best 40 kills on the week, averaging 3.64 kills per set. She tallied a thencareer best of 19 kills in the Lobos five-set win over Portland, adding a career-best 17 digs for her third double-double of the season. She logged her fourth double-double of the year vs. Northern Colorado, posting 13 kills with 11 digs. It was the first all-tournament selection in her career. She added a second the following week at the Blue/Gold Invitational in Toledo, Ohio. For Kelsey, she earned her second alltournament nod of the season and fourth of her career after logging a team-best 43 digs (3.91 digs/set) on the week. She posted 21 digs in the Lobos five-set win vs Portland, and added 12 digs vs. UT Arlington and 10 vs. Northern Colorado. Kelsey finished with just one reception error all weekend, logging a reception percentage of.980 (1 error on 50 total attempts). And we meet again New Mexico plays a single opponent twice a year a bunch of times every season. That s part of conference play in the Mountain West home-and-home series every season. However, when the Lobos faced Youngstown State on September 15, it was the second time this season that the two squads squared off. On September 1 at the Glory Road Invitational in El Paso, Texas, UNM opened the tournament vs. the Penguins. Two weeks later at the Blue/ Gold Invitational in Toledo, Ohio, the Lobos again opened a tournament against YSU. It s the first time since 2012 that New Mexico has played a non-conference foe twice in a season. As it were, the Lobos did it three times that season, playing Duquesne and Southern twice each at the Lobo Classic before playing a home-and-home series vs. CSU Bakersfield. New Mexico will play another non-conference foe twice this season, as well. UNM will host UTEP in November, having already played the Miners at the Glory Road Invitational. Five for fighting After seven straight three-set matches to open the season, the Lobos finally played a five-set match when they defeated Portland 3-2 at the Lobo Classic. With the Portland match being UNM s eighth of 2017 New Mexico volleyball 6 the season, it s the latest the team has played to five sets since That year, New Mexico went 11 matches before playing a five-setter vs. SMU in its 12th match of the season. The win vs. Portland also marked the first time the Lobos won their first five-set match of the season since 2009, when they beat (coincidentally) Portland State in Albuquerque. Lobos Take two of three at Glory Road Invitational New Mexico won a pair of matches at the Glory Road Invitational in El Paso, Texas, last weekend, topping Youngstown State and tournament host UTEP. The Lobos also dropped a three-set match to North Dakota, an NCAA Tournament team from Against Youngstown State, UNM swept by the Penguins 25-19, 25-20, behind a careerhigh 13 kills from freshman Hailey Rubino. Also helping vs. Youngstown State were middle blocker Mariessa Carrasco, who tallied nine kills on a.471 hitting percentage, and Lauren Twitty and Victoria Spragg, who both finished with seven kills. New Mexico kept up the momentum vs. tournament host UTEP, moving its all-time record against the Miners to 35-8 after logging the win in straight sets, 25-22, 25-18, Again, Rubino led the way with 12 kills, while Spragg had nine errorless kills on 10 attempts and Twitty posted her second double-double of the season. However, the Lobos dropped their finale in El Paso, falling 25-23, 25-15, Rubino posted double-digit kills for the third straight match, finishing with 10 vs. the Fighting Hawks. Rubino, Heilborn named to Glory Road Invite all-tourney Team Freshman outside hitter Hailey Rubino and junior setter Carson Heilborn both earned a spot on the Glory Road Invitational All- Tournament Team after guiding the Lobos to a 2-1 performance at the event. Rubino, hailing from Leesburg, Virginia, finished with a team-best 35 kills on the week, averaging 3.89 kills/set on a.244 hitting percentage. She tallied a career-best 13 kills vs. Youngstown State and finished with double-digit kills all three matches on the week This is the first all-tournament team selection of her career. Heilborn, a native of Auburn, Washington, also posted a strong performance for New Mexico, logging 98 assists over the weekend for an average of assists/set. She finished with at least 30 assists all three matches in El Paso, including two matches with 34 one off her season high.

Time for some home cooking Over the course of Jeff Nelson s decade of coaching at New Mexico, the Lobos have enjoyed success hosting non-conference tournaments at home. Including the 2017 season, Nelson s teams have posted a record (.780) during non-conference home tournaments since his arrival in 2007, with winning records at those tournaments all 11 years. The Lobos most successful slate of home tournaments was in 2013, when they went 6-0. The past two seasons, UNM registered 4-2 records, while New Mexico went 2-1 this season. Home at last The Lobos finally got to play in Albuquerque as they hosted the Lobo Classic in Johnson Center on September 8-9. That was the latest UNM has played its home opener since That season, the Lobos played at three straight road tournaments before finally playing at home on September 20 as they hosted the UNM Invitational. For what it s worth, New Mexico went undefeated at its home-opening tournament in 2002, beating SMU, Temple and Auburn. But Don t get too Comfy As noted above, the Lobos finally got to play at home on September 8-9 after back-to-back weeks on the road to open the season. However, the Lobo Classic is the only time New Mexico will be at home before conference play kicks off, giving the team just one weekend at home over the first month of the season. After the Lobo Classic, UNM doesn t return back to the friendly confines of Johnson Center until September 28 as they host Boise State. It s the fewest number of matches the Lobos have played at home over the beginning of the season since That season, New Mexico played three matches at the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic to open the season before playing on the road for four straight weeks (three road tournaments and the opening week of Mountain West play). UNM didn t play at home a second time during the 2008 season until October 2. Lobos go 2-1 at Iowa State to Open 2017 Campaign The Lobos opened their 2016 season with a strong showing at the Cyclone Invitational in 2017 New Mexico volleyball 7 Ames, Iowa, winning two of their three matches on the weekend. New Mexico started with a sweep of Nebraska Omaha, relying on strong defense from Ashley Kelsey and veteran leadership en route to a straight-set sweep. It was the 11th-straight season-opening win for the Lobos. UNM continued to shine in its second contest of the season, riding a strong offensive attack to sweep Kent State. Five players had at least seven kills, with sophomore Lauren Twitty leading the youthful Lobos with a career hightying 14 putaways. However, the youthful Lobos suffered their first loss of the season in the finale of the Cyclone Invite, falling in straight sets to tournament host Iowa State. Kelsey, Spragg named to Cyclone Invite All-Tourney Team Ashley Kelsey and Victoria Spragg both earned a spot on the Cyclone Invitational All- Tournament Team after guiding the Lobos to a 2-1 performance at the event. Kelsey, a redshirt senior from Ewa Beach, Hawaii, helmed the Lobos defense in Ames, Iowa, logging 45 digs over three matches for an average of 5.00 digs/set. She had 25 in UNM s season-opening sweep of Nebraska Omaha, the most by a Lobo in a three-set match since This selection was the third such for Kelsey in her career. She was also named to the UNM Invitational and USF Invitational All-Tournament teams last season. Spragg, a redshirt junior from Belen, N.M., also had a strong showing, hitting a team-best.385 with 21 kills and six errors on 39 attempts. She had nine kills vs. Kent State and posted seven putaways vs. Iowa State. She also added six blocks on the week to earn her second-career all-tournament team selection. She was named to the UT Arlington Invitational All-Tournament Team in On the Road Again For the second week of the 2017 season, the Lobos found themselves back on the road for a second straight weekend. To open the season, New Mexico was at the Cyclone Invitational in Ames, Iowa, while week two saw the team travel to El Paso for the Glory Road Invitational. And while that may seem like business as usual for a collegiate sports team, back-to-back road trips to start a season is rare for the Lobos. It s just the first time since 2002 that New Mexico volleyball has opened its season with two straight road trips. That year, the Lobos kicked off their campaign with a tournament at Wichita State before playing at Arizona the following week.

Nevada News and notes Nelson in season openers The Lobos have never lost a season opener during head coach Jeff Nelson s 11 seasons in Albuquerque. In fact, New Mexico has lost a total of two sets in the 11 season openers Nelson has coached (2007 vs. Florida Atlantic and 2011 vs. South Florida). This season, the Lobos opened their 2017 season with a sweep of Nebraska Omaha,. That straight-sets win extended UNM s streak of season-opening sweeps to six years in a row. Season-opening tournaments have also been successes during Nelson s tenure. Every year, including 2017, the Lobos have won at least a majority of their matches. This year, New Mexico went 2-1 in its seasonopening road trip, sweeping Omaha and Kent State before falling to Iowa State. However, despite its success, UNM has posted at least one loss during its season-opening swing each of the last eight season (from ) after opening the Nelson era with three undefeated opening weekends (from ). Road Warriors Over the 11 seasons with head coach Jeff Nelson at the helm, the Lobos have opened their season on the road just three times. This year was one of those times, as New Mexico ventured to Ames, Iowa, to play at Iowa State for their season debut. However, as of late, Nelson has alternated the Lobos pattern of opening at home and on the road. In 2013, 2015 and now 2017, UNM has opened on the road, while 2014 and 2016 saw the Lobos opening in Johnson Center. Nelson scheduled his season opener at home for his first six years in Albuquerque. We Are New Mexico Out of the 16 players on New Mexico s 2017 roster, four hail from the Land of Enchantment. Three of those Lobos are from Albuquerque, with junior defensive specialist Mercedes Pacheco, junior outside hitter Carly Beddingfield and freshmen middle blocker Abbey Willison. Redshirt junior middle blocker Victoria Spragg hails from Belen, N.M. But we ll take players from Arizona, too The state that tied New Mexico for the most Lobo volleyballers is Arizona, yielding four players on the 2017 roster. All four are freshmen, with Nicolette Clark (Chandler), Kayla Long (Tucson), Danica Rowan (Thatcher) and Morgan Schreckler (Phoenix). Lobo head coach Jeff Nelson coached at Arizona State during the mid-90s. Who s back Although New Mexico loses a majority of its letterwinners from its 2016 roster, it does bring back a solid nucleus of players. Seven letterwinners return for head coach Jeff Nelson and the Lobos, including three starters and their libero. Ashley Kelsey, who ranks 11th in program history in digs, returns in the back row, where she ll be joined by the team s top defender off the bench, Mercedes Pacheco. Starter setter Carson Heilborn is also back after a strong sophomore campaign, while redshirt junior middle blockers Mariessa Carrasco and Victoria Spragg return to the front row. Rising sophomore outside hitter Lauren Twitty is also back after starting a handful of matches during Who s New On a roster where there are significantly more new faces than familiar faces, it seems like everyone is new. But, the Lobos welcome in a strong class of nine new players, including Long Beach State transfer and Albuquerque native Carly Beddingfield. Beddingfield. She started 22 matches during her freshmen year with the Beach, and reached double-digits in kills nine times. Additionally, New Mexico brings in a bevy of true freshmen. Hailey Rubino claimed some spectacular accolades during her high school career in Virginia, including PrepVolleyball.com All- American and Under Armour All-American. Morgan Schreckler and Nicolette Clark were both named to the AVCA Phenom List while during their high school careers in Arizona. Danica Rowan, another Arizona freshman, was named All-Conference Player of the Year her senior year at Thatcher HS. Yasmin Tan, out of Australia, played with the Australian Junior Women s Team. Additionally, the Lobos add setter Sarah Lobo from Miami (three-time All Miami-Dade), along with libero Kayla Long from Tucson (fourtime All-State Honorable Mention) and middle blocker Abbey Willison from Sandia High School in Albuquerque. Lobos Picked Ninth in MW preseason coaches poll The Lobos were selected to finish ninth in the Mountain West this season, as voted by the league s 11 coaches in the MW Preseason Coaches Poll released August New Mexico volleyball 8

9 Colorado State narrowly claimed the top spot in the coaches poll over Boise State, earning eight of the 11 first-place votes and 98 total points to Boise State s haul of three first-place votes and 93 total points. San Diego State notched 79 total points for third in the poll, ahead of fourth-place Wyoming s 67-point tally. Nevada (57 points) and Utah State (51) finished fifth and sixth in the poll. Finishing seventh to 11th respectively were UNLV (42), San José State (38), New Mexico (37), Fresno State (29) and Air Force (14). On the 2017 schedule The Lobos, who posted a record in 2016, have put together a challenging schedule for the 2017 season that provides a number of opportunities to help develop a roster that will include eight newcomers. New Mexico will take on a schedule that includes seven matches against teams that made the 2016 NCAA Tournament and features three competitive non-conference road tournaments to go with the annual Lobo Classic in Albuquerque. The schedule is highlighted by its matches against postseason teams, as the Lobos face Iowa State and North Dakota during nonconference play and Boise State, Colorado State and UNLV during Mountain West play. New Mexico opens the season at the Cyclone Invitational, playing Nebraska Omaha, Kent State and the Cyclones in Ames, Iowa, on August The Lobos will remain on the road the following weekend as they play Youngstown State, North Dakota and UTEP in El Paso, Texas, on September 1-2. Nelson and company return to Albuquerque as they host the Lobo Classic at Johnson Center on September 8-9. New Mexico will take on a strong slate of teams in Portland, Northern Colorado and UT Arlington. UNM closes out tournament play at the Blue/ Gold Invitational in Toledo, Ohio, as the Lobos play Toledo, Tennessee Tech and Youngstown State again. New Mexico rounds out its non-conference schedule with a road match at Rio Grande Rival New Mexico State on October 16 and a return trip from UTEP on November 12 in Albuquerque. Mountain West play will start on September 21 when New Mexico travels to Colorado State. As per the conference s unbalanced scheduling arrangement, the Lobos will play twice against eight league opponents and just once against UNLV (November 13 in Albuquerque) and Air Force (November 16 in Colorado Springs). Aces in the classroom New Mexico shined academically in 2016 as Lobo volleyball collected a number of national- News and notes and conference-level awards. The AVCA announced that 145 Division I indoor volleyball teams earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the season and New Mexico earned a spot on the list. The Lobos finished with a 3.39 team GPA during the Fall 2016 semester and a 3.55 team GPA during the Spring 2017 semester. It s the 11th straight semester and the 29th semester in the last 30 that the team posted at least a 3.0 GPA. Overall, New Mexico has earned the honor nine times, previously being recognized by the AVCA in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2015 and Six Lobos also made their way onto the Mountain West Scholar-Athlete list, including current student-athletes Carson Heilborn and Lauren Twitty. New Mexico also placed nine players on the Mountain West All-Academic team, with Mariessa Carrasco, Victoria Spragg Heilborn and Twitty earning a spot. Lobos Hold Successful Cherry vs. Silver Exhibition New Mexico hosted a successful intrasquad exhibition Saturday, August 19, at Johnson Center as the Cherry squad swept by the Silver team 25-17, 25-20, With just six days until New Mexico s regularseason opener at the Cyclone Invitational in Ames, Iowa, the youthful Lobos were aiming to pick up some experience in their first game action of the young 2017 campaign. Fielding a roster that features nine freshmen and 10 newcomers overall, the Lobos entered Saturday needing some build up their game experience and chemistry. The Cherry team, largely composed of the team s projected starters, were able to get some time playing together, while the team s freshmen saw the court for some of their first collegiate game action. Statistically, Lauren Twitty posted the match high in kills for the Cherry squad, logging 16 putaways and two errors on 28 attempts. The only player on both sides to reach doubledigit kills, Twitty finished with a.500 hitting percentage, the highest in the match. However, Cherry teammate Victoria Spragg hit.467 out of the middle, with nine kills and five total blocks. Mariessa Carrasco (seven kills), Carly Beddingfield (four) and freshmen Hailey Rubino (four) also contributed offensively for the Cherry team. Carson Heilborn dished out a match-high 34 assists, while Ashley Kelsey (18 digs), Rubino (nine) and Heilborn (seven) paced the Cherry team s floor defense. On the Silver s side which featured all freshmen plus volunteer assistant Ricardo Sanchez Nicolette Clark led the way 2017 New Mexico volleyball 9 with seven kills, with Yasmin Tan (five kills) and Abbey Willison (three) also producing offensively. Sarah Lobo tallied 17 assists for the Silver team, while Sanchez and Tan each notched eight digs. Kayla Long also chipped in six digs. Beddingfield Plays for Mountain West All-Stars Junior outside hitter Carly Beddingfield competed with the 2017 Mountain West All-Star Women s Volleyball Team over the summer. The team competed in the 2017 European Global Challenge in Pula, Croatia, from July 10-15, facing off against junior national and club teams from throughout Europe. It was the fourth straight year the Lobos have been represented on the team. Last season, juniors Victoria Spragg and Carson Heilborn competed with the team, while recent UNM graduates Julia Warren and Devanne Sours participated in 2015 with head coach Jeff Nelson coaching the team. In 2014, Warren, Cassie House and assistant coach JJ Glavan made the trip. Beddingfield, originally from Albuquerque, enters her first indoor volleyball season at New Mexico after three semesters at Long Beach State. The 6-foot-2 outside hitter had a productive beach volleyball season for the Lobos during the spring, posting a 6-2 record from the No. 4 position en route to a 7-9 record overall. At Long Beach State, Beddingfield started 22 matches during her freshman year, with nine double-digit kill performances. During her sophomore campaign, she played in 10 matches. The 12 Mountain West student-athletes that on the team traveled to Maribor, Slovenia, for several days of training sessions and friendly matches against national teams from the region.

In fact, the Cowgirls have posted four sweeps in that span, moving all the way up to second in the MW behind CSU. This comes on the heels of a 6-9 start to the season, including a 5-7 non-conference record. On the season, junior outside hitter Emily Lewis leads the team with 216 kills, good for an average of 3.00/set. Tara Traphagan is second on the team with 188 kills (2.58/set), while Halie McArdle (162 kills, 2.25/set) and Reed Copeland (132, 2.06) are the only other Cowgirls averaging over two kills/set. Freshmen Marissa Harmon sets up Wyoming s offense, logging 8.75 assists/set. As a team, Wyoming ranks second in the league in hitting percentage (.228), opponent percentage (.169) and blocks/set (2.81). UW s 2.81 blocks/set rank 18th in the NCAA. Defensively, three regulars average over a block/set, with Copeland (89 blocks, 1.89/set), Jackie McBride (85, 1.16/set) and Traphagan (79, 1.08/set) leading Wyoming at the net. Madi Fields has collected a team-high 294 digs, averaging 4.03/set. Lily Austin (153 digs, 2.28/set), Harmon (134, 1.84/set) and McArdle (125, 1.74/set) also contribute. Series vs. Wyoming The Lobos and the Cowgirls share a long history, having played 78 matches since the series started in It s the most matches UNM has played against a single opponent in program history. Wyoming leads the overall series 44-34, winning 10 of the last 14 matches between the two teams. No. 20 Colorado State, the preseason pick to win the 2017 MW title, has won eight straight (all within the league), with seven sweeps during that time. CSU s only losses this season came in five sets to Power Five teams Duke and Colorado. CSU has also captured a pair of win vs. top-25 teams, sweeping then-no. 15 Florida State in Tallahassee and then-no. 16 Michigan in Fort Collins. Breana Runnels (3.10 kills/set) and Jasmin Hanna (3.01) lead Colorado State s offensive attack, which ranks tops in the league in hitting percentage (.308) and second in assists (13.09/set) and kills (13.81/set). Kirstie Hillyer (2.91 kills/set) and Sanja Cizmic (2.64) also contribute. Sophomore setter Katie Oleksak dishes out assist/set to key the team s offense as she leads the Mountain West in assists/set. Defensively, Amanda Young averages 3.73 digs/set, while Hillyer (1.47 blocks/set) and Paulina Hougaard-Jensen (1.31) patrol the net. The duo ranks 1-3 in the league in blocks/set, helping Colorado State to an average of 2.87 blocks/set best in the MW and 14th in the NCAA. Colorado State is also one of the better serving teams in the MW, averaging 1.46 aces/set.
