Northern Illinois University s victory over Ohio two weeks ago proved pivotal to the Huskies conference standings as OU lost at Miami Friday night. Kent State lost to Bowling Green later that night, putting NIU in the driver s seat for the Regular Season Championship. The Huskies are coming off their second-best hitting performance all-time Saturday night as the team hit.480 ( ) at Central Michigan. The clip was 25 points shy of NIU s single match record of.505 versus Lehigh on Sept. 1, NIU s 58 kills at CMU were the most in a three set match in the MAC this season and tied for the third-most overall by the Huskies in match in The Huskies finished 1-1 when playing at Ball State and Toledo on Oct. 2 and 3, respectively, falling to the Cardinals in straight-sets and defeating the Rockets, 3-1. NIU s season hitting percentage jumped 10 points following their weekend percentage of.387. The Huskies lead the MAC in attacking percentage at.249, pushing the team into the top-50 in the NCAA (No. 49). Jenna Radtke hit.528 last weekend, averaging 3.50 kills per set in her second week back on the court since returning from injury. Outside hitter T ara Austin is ranked in the top-35 in the country in kills per set (4.24) and points per set (4.67), pacing the Mid-American Conference in each category. In its last 25 regular season matches in Mid-American Conference play, NIU is 21-4 (.840). 1

Three HUSKIES EARN ROAD SWEEP IN MICHIGAN The NIU volleyball team recorded a sweep in Michigan last weekend, defeating both Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan in straight-sets to improve to 10-2 in Mid- American Conference play. Northern Illinois University disrupted the EMU offense in the weekend opener, allowing the Eagles to hit.055 in the match, while hitting.286. Mary Grace Kelly led the Huskies off the bench with 10 kills, hitting.529 in the contest. Though the Eagles battled, NIU won the match in three sets, 25-19, 25-18, The Huskies followed up with a slugfest at CMU as the two teams combined for 94 kills and a hitting percentage of.394. NIU hit.480 in the match with 58 kills, swinging hard and often, outlasting the Chippewas, 25-21, 25-21, T ara Austin had 15 kills, hitting.538 in the match, while Jenna Radtke had 14 kills with an attacking clip of.591. THE NIU HUSKIES - THE MAC S TOP DOG Two weeks ago, the NIU volleyball team became the first team in the MAC to defeat Ohio this season, ending the Bobcats 33-match conference unbeaten streak. NIU s two wins this past weekend proved crucial as Ohio lost at Miami, 3-0, and Kent State lost at Bowling Green, 3-2. Through the head-to-head tiebreaker, Northern Illinois University leads the MAC with a 10-2 record and controls its own destiny for the MAC Regular Season Championship with two weeks remaining in the season. The Bobcats are also 10-2 this season while the Golden Flashes are 9-3. Three of NIU s final four matches will played in the Huskies friendly confines of Victor E. Court. IN THE LAST FIVE MATCHES... Middle blockers Jenna Radtke and Lauren Zielinski have combined for a hitting percentage of.438 and 3.32 kills per set. Both are hitting above.400. Alexis Gonzalez is averaging assists per set, setting 215 of the Huskies 258 kills in that span (.833). Gonzalez has also posted 14 kills, including six at Central Michigan. Anna Brereton has posted 5.67 digs per set and is receiving opening serves with a.963 success rate, posting three perfect outings. She s also registered nine service aces. The Huskies have out-dug their opponents, , outpacing Buffalo, Ohio, Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan NIU hit.480 at CMU, the second-best hitting performance in school history behind a.505 clip versus Lehigh Sept. 1, The team has hit.270 in the last five matches. Two of Northern Illinois University s opponents, Eastern Michigan and Ohio, have hit below.100 in a match. EMU hit.055 on Oct. 30 while OU was.082 on Oct. 24. SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION Toledo will enter Friday s contest with a 5-20 overall record and a 2-10 clip in the Mid- American Conference. The Rockets are flying high after defeating Akron in straight sets last Saturday, 3-0, and rallying for a five set victory on Oct. 23 versus Bowling Green, 3-2. Rachel Vidourek has been the most-consistent cog on offense, hitting.308 with 2.40 kills per set while recording nearly a block per set. Ball State, the only team in the MAC West to defeat NIU, enters the weekend with a record and a 7-5 MAC register. Prior to its current four-match unbeaten streak, the Cardinals lost five consecutive contests. Amanda Raker, this week s MAC West Offensive Player of the Week, was very efficient last weekend, registering an attacking clip of.850 with 3.00 kills per set. Alex Fuelling leads the BSU attack with 2.54 kills per set and an attacking clip of.239. NEXT UP NIU will close the regular season next week with its final home match of the season on Thursday versus Western Michigan at 7 p.m. The Huskies will close the 2015 regular season at Bowling Green on Saturday at 6 p.m. Thursday will be Senior Night and this year s lone senior, Alexis Pookie Gonzalez, will be honored prior to the match. The Huskies and Broncos contest will also be aired on ESPN3. 4

5 ray gooden 14th Season Ohio State, ( MAC) Entering his 14th year in 2015 as head coach of the Northern Illinois Huskies, three-time Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year Ray Gooden has put his stamp on the program right in tune with NIU Athletics mission: Developing Champions in the Classroom, Competition, and Life. Ranking second all-time at in wins at NIU, the Evanston, Illinois, native has put together six 20-win campaigns, including winning 27 matches in 2010 and 28 in During the 2014 campaign, Gooden coached the Huskies to the MAC West Division title for the second time in four seasons. NIU finished the season with a record, including wins over Louisville, Tennessee and Northern Iowa, and a 14-2 mark in the MAC. Individually, four Huskies earned All-MAC honors and seven individuals garnered Academic All-MAC accolades. Gooden has earned MAC Coach of the Year honors three times (2006, 2011, 2012) and led the Huskies to their first MAC regular season title in 10 seasons in 2011, leading the team to a 28-7 record and atlarge berth into the NCAA Tournament. Academically, Gooden s Huskies have received the AVCA Team Academic Award in four of the last five seasons, while he s had three Academic All-America selections, 18 Academic All-MAC selections, an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient, an NCAA Woman of the Year nominee and two Senior CLASS Award candidates. Not only has Gooden s impact reached the Midwest, he s gone global as well. Over the past 10 years, Gooden has taken seven overseas coaching trips through USA Volleyball -- Europe (four times), Japan (twice), Argentina, Guatemala, and Brazil. He s also sent NIU players to Brazil, China, Italy, and Croatia to compete with the USA Volleyball A2 National and Bring It Promotions/USA Development teams. Additionally, Gooden has served as a court coach and evaluator for the National Team tryout in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and a coach at the National College Team tryouts in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As a player, Gooden earned two varsity volleyball letters at Ohio State and was named an All-Big Ten Conference club performer three times. An eighttime Prairie State Games competitor, he was named a three-time High School/Amateur Athletics Union Olympic All-American and the 1989 Illinois High School Player of the Year out of Evanston High School. At Ohio State University, Gooden earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics in September Gooden is married to the former Stephanie Lynn Scarpelli and they have two daughters, Gianna Ella and Zoe Lynn, and one son, Donovan Isiah.
