3 Objectives Western Australian Volleyball Association Inc. Annual Report The Objectives for which the Association is established are: To govern, foster and develop the game of Volleyball in Western Australia. To foster affiliation and coordination among independent bodies playing the game of Volleyball in Western Australia. To provide and assist in providing opportunities for people of all ages and of both sexes irrespective of creed, colour, class, or political belief, to enjoy Volleyball within Western Australia. To support and participate in activities of the Australian Volleyball Federation Inc. 3

4 BOARD OF MANAGEMENT REPORT At the 2011 Volleyball WA AGM, the membership of VWA voted in the following persons to the Board of Management. Trevor Williams OAM President, Damian Oldmeadow Vice President, Rob Perisic General Member and Stuart Davis General Member. During the year, the elected Board of Management appointed Emma Bedbrook and Paul Prindiville to the Board. One of the major tasks undertaken by the Board of Management in 2011 was the review of the Association s Strategic Plan and the creation of the new Strategic Plan The review of the old plan established that the Association had met all of the major goals and objectives as outlined in this plan. Two of the most significant areas identified in the plan was the high prioritization of High School Volleyball and the future financial stability of the Association. The Board believes that the future growth of Volleyball in WA is to come from the growth of High School aged students. To allow for resources to be put into this area, the Board of Management has put a lower priority on Mini (Primary School Aged) Volleyball. This strategy definitely proved to be successful with large growth numbers in the High School area. As reported in last year s annual report, after the current staff inherited a large and significant debt (through a substantial amount of unreconciled accounts receivable in the Association s financial accounts), in 2010 the Association finally achieved our goal of financial stability. During this period the staff have worked to either receive this outstanding money or to allocate profit to off set this amount of bad debts. In 2009, the Association finally reduced this amount to zero. In 2011, the Association once again recorded a profit, and coupled with the profit from 2010, the Association was able to also increase the membership s retained profits. The financial position of the Association is strong. Member s equity is in a strong position and this puts the Association in a better position to invest into new programs and initiatives. However, as good as the position is, the Association has as a major goal and strategic direction to always make a financial profit so that this money can be spent on growing the sport. We need to keep growing the sport financially so we can grow the sport in other areas. To this end, the Association s Board of Management is very keen to include a member on the Board with marketing and sponsorship knowledge. This position will provide expertise and advice in how best for the Association to maximize our sponsorship revenue opportunities and how best to increase exposure of volleyball. With the above objective achieved any future profits can be allocated by the Board of Management to be spent on new developments and resources. As outlined in last year s report, the Australian Volleyball Federation announced that they received none of the additional funding offered to sports from the Federal Government. However, after some lobbying from the AVF they were able to secure $300,000 in previously unannounced additional participation funding. Gavin Lewis and Volleyball WA put a proposal to the AVF which would see the AVF contributing some of this funding directly back to the Member States in the form of co funding a new staffing position. This proposal was accepted and VWA and the AVF are in the final stages of appointing an additional staff member for the next twelve months. The primary role of this new position will be to increase participation numbers. During the year the Board of Management monitors, reviews and sits on on a number of Volleyball WA Committees. These committees provide advice and support to the staff of the Association. In 2009, the Board of Management spent some time on stabilizing the Association s working committees by creating strong policies and guidelines for the committees to follow. The committees comprise of volunteers who are keen to give back to the sport of volleyball and they provide invaluable assistance. The Board of Management would like to thank all the VWA committees. As reported in last year s report, for the past few years the Association has struggled to maintain a stable staffing roster. This problem is not unique to volleyball and most sports have the same issues as we are positioned in a very competitive employment market in WA. However, with the slight economic downturn in Board of Management Report 4

5 WA and the hard recruiting process and staff development program, VWA have been able to maintain the same staffing roster for the past couple of years. This situation has created a more stabilized working environment and the Association can move forward in the achievement of these strategic goals. Western Australian Volleyball Association Inc. Annual Report The Board would like to take this opportunity and thank all the staff of Volleyball WA who work so diligently for the Association. The existing staff members of the Association have worked tirelessly to deliver the Association s outcomes. A very special thank you on behalf of all of the WA Volleyball community to Marta Makuch, Marielle Theberge, Rachelle Brammer, Max Wason and Gavin Lewis for their tremendous work ethic and passion for our sport. The Board of Management is aware that Mr Gavin Lewis will be thanking all contributors to Volleyball in his Executive Director s Report. The Board would sincerely like to echo his sentiments and thank all of the Association s key stakeholders, including our Patron Mr John McGrath MLA, State Government and the Department of Sport and Recreation, Healthway, all sponsors, club committees, all volunteers, members and any other supporters of WA Volleyball. 6 EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR S REPORT In 2010 the WA Volleyball Association celebrated its 50 th Anniversary, 2011 was definitely not a hang over year. A matter of fact, 2011 saw some of the most significant growth and gains made by the Association in a number of years. After a couple of difficult years in trying to secure quality staff (due to the WA economic situation), 2010 and 2011 saw the Association attain, and retain quality staff. Because of this stability, the Association has been able to grow the sport in WA. The stable staffing position has allowed the Association to grow established competitions and programs. It provides a level of continuity and allows staff to build on their previous good work. In saying this, I am always conscience of the very competitive employment market we are in and I am aware that staff have their own personal careers to pursue and goals to achieve. The possibility of not being able to retain staff is a constant threat that the Association faces. The current staff of Volleyball WA is Marta Makuch (Operations Manager), Max Wason (Development Officer), Rachelle Brammer (Office Administrator), Marielle Theberge (Social Competitions Officer) and myself (Executive Director). These people have been in the current positions for at least the last two years. In the past year with the Association they have once again shown themselves to be very worthy assets to the Association. The challenge for VWA is to find ways that we can retain these staff (and new staff members) on a sustainable basis. To all the staff of the Association, from our full time staff members to our coordinators and referees a big thank you for all your efforts throughout In 2011, the Board of Management completed a thorough review of the expiring Strategic Plan. This review, established that the Association had achieved most of it s outcomes from the Strategic Plan. At the end of this review the Board of Management then created the new strategic plan for the 2012 to 2016 period. This plan will be circulated to all stakeholders for comments and will then be adopted by the Association also saw for the fourth year in a row the stability on the Board of Management. The stability of the VWA Board meant that the Board could focus on establishing key plans and goals for the executive to create and follow in the long term (as opposed to focusing on one year goals). The Board has worked very well together and as indicated above have already done a lot of work in setting the future strategic direction for the Association. I would like to personally thank the Board of Management for their efforts throughout a very busy year. However, as great as this stability has been, it will come to an end in 2012, with the resignation / retirement of some Board of Management members. Mr Stuart Davis (General Member) resigned from the Board in February 2012 as he has moved to Europe. In addition, Mr Rob Perisic has decided to not re nominate for his position (General Member) due to the fact that he wants to dedicate more of his time to his new baby and family. Stuart and Rob have contributed greatly over the past few years and have been instrumental in guiding the Association strategically. Finally, the President of Volleyball WA, Mr Trevor Williams OAM has also decided to not re nominate in 2012 to the VWA Board. Trevor came back to the Board of Management in 2007 when the Association was in desperate need of a person to fill the role of President. Under previous VWA Boards and Presidents in the 2000 s, the Association did a sensational job in rebuilding from a bleak position inherited from the 1990 s, under Trevor s leadership the Association not only maintained this newly built strong position but grew to a position that is arguably the strongest position that WA Volleyball has ever been in. Trevor s foresight and belief were fundamental to the Association achieving this current level of success. On behalf of the Association, I thank Trevor, not only for his involvement for the past five years but for his involvement since Without Trevor s input, Volleyball WA would not be in the strong position we find ourselves in today. Trevor s contribution to Australian Volleyball can be summed up when you look at the following; he is the only person in Australia that is a Life Member of two State Associations and the National Association in the sport of Volleyball and has received the Order of Australia Medal for this contribution to volleyball. 7 Western Australian Volleyball Association Inc. Annual Report On a personal note, I can not thank Trevor enough. He has been an inspiration, a mentor and a sensational boss. I will miss Trevor s involvement and advice. Volleyball will sorely miss Trevor s leadership and the challenge for all of us is to work as hard and smart as we can to try and achieve the great vision set by Trevor for our wonderful sport. In addition to the staff and Board of Management, volunteers help run our sport. Volleyball WA, like any sport, depends a great deal on volunteers. In WA we are fortunate to have such keen, positive and energetic volunteers. I would like to thank all the volunteers who have donated so selflessly to the sport of volleyball. As in previous years, I acknowledge that everyone s personal lives become busier and because of this volunteers become harder to find. I would encourage all volleyball supporters to please consider volunteering some time to our sport, from Board of Management members to refereeing a junior game or two. As mentioned earlier, the VWA run programs have been very successful in The year started off with Volleyball WA s Alcohol. Think Again Beach. The volunteer based WA Beach Volleyball Committee worked extremely hard over winter and summer to help the VWA staff provide a sensationally organized and run event, which is arguably Australia s best local State Series for Beach Volleyball. In addition to the regular tournaments provided by Volleyball WA, VWA provided training opportunities and squads for Beach Volleyball athletes that wanted to further their volleyball experience by developing their skills. The Indoor Volleyball season (Perth Volleyball League PVL) was well participated in and the support of spectators and sponsors during the final series really paid tribute to all the hard work from the Association, the Clubs, the referees, the coaches and most importantly the athletes. In 2011, the competition attracted a record number of teams, and this great achievement is a direct result of all the hard work done by our volunteer club committees. In 2010, Volleyball WA spent some resources and paid for live internet broadcasting of the PVL finals. As a first year trial, this was very successful and many people from around the World who could not make the finals watched them over the internet and commented to VWA about the success of such an initiative. This live broadcast was continued in 2011 and also proved to be a great success. The above two competitions are the two pinnacle programs that VWA runs for Beach and Indoor Volleyball respectively, however, most energy and resources are spent on the underpinning programs. For a full description please read the rest of the Annual Report which discusses all these programs in greater detail. One major strategic direction is for Volleyball WA to provide opportunities for all athletes aspiring to further their volleyball development with the opportunity to play in the National Events run by the AVF. For Beach Volleyball this is the Australian Beach Volleyball Tour (ABVT) and the Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Championships (AJBVC) and for Indoor Volleyball this is the Australian Volleyball League (AVL) and the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships (AJVC). For the first time in a number of years, the AVF secured a truly National Tour for the sport of Beach Volleyball. This was good news for the sport of beach volleyball around Australia, as it provides a pinnacle event for local athletes to aspire to as well as a tremendous vehicle to promote the sport of beach volleyball to the general public. The challenge facing the AVF and the sport of beach volleyball is to maintain this event in a form that can benefit the whole of the sport and not just the commercial providers. It is essential that we have a sustainable and successful Australian Beach Volleyball Tour. After the great success of the WA hosted AJBVC, where WA won the Champion State Trophy, the AJBVC did not live up to the same amazing results for WA. Instead WA finished equal 3 rd. This is still a great result for WA Beach Volleyball. Beach Volleyball is becoming more and more popular for our elite junior athletes. A big congratulations to all these teams and their coaches. VWA have continued our involvement in the men s and women s AVL season. The women s State team WA Pearls, went through the season and won WA our fifth Gold Medal in National Women s Senior Championships. This is the third year in a row that the WA Pearls have 7

8 women in Australia. Congratulations to Pauline Manser (Head Coach) and all the players and coaches for this remarkable achievement. The WA men s senior team WA Hornets could not match their medal performance of the last season and just missed out on a finals berth. The National League was run in a different format and for 2011 was actually coordinated by ACT Volleyball and called the V- League. VWA is very keen to see the National Competition return to the control of the AVF as this will ensure a much more professionally run league and will avoid some of the major issues our WA team had to deal with when we travelled over East. It is always disappointing to see when the other States do not take the same time and energy that WA take when delivering the event in WA. Our athletes always comment on the fact that the WA rounds are the best organized rounds to play in. We congratulate Head Coach Darrin Pike and all his players and assistant coach for a good season and their commitment to volleyball. At the start of the season Darrin Pike announced to VWA that 2011 would be his last year as the Coach of the WA Hornets. After Head Coaching the team for 7 years, Darrin decided that it was time he took a break and reclaimed some time for himself. Darrin has done a great job for WA Volleyball and provided a much needed boost to WA Men s Volleyball. His legacy will live on in the fact that the State League has become more professional and that our WA athletes now have a National pathway to aspire to. After many years of first playing and then assisting Darrin Pike, Mr David Van Weert decided to not re nominate for the Assistant Coach position. We would also like to give our sincere thanks to David for his many years of service to WA volleyball. In 2011, WA travelled to Adelaide to participate in the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships (AJVC). WA fell short of achieving our overall goal of attaining the President s Cup for these Championships which is awarded to the most successful State. Unfortunately, we finished 3 rd to Queensland and Victoria, but this is still the equal best result achieved by a WA Junior delegation. WA had teams playing for medals in 5 out of the 5 divisions we entered teams in. Congratulations to the U/17 Women for winning a Gold Medal, and the U/17 Men and U/21 Women for winning a bronze medal. On a National level, in terms of Australian teams participating in World Competitions, the ASC perceived lack of performances from our National Teams means that future funding could be jeopardized. The critical assessment tool is going to be Australia s qualification processes and achievements for the London 2012 Olympic Games. We wish all National Team athletes or athletes pushing for National Team selection the best of luck in this period as the qualification of these teams to the Olympics is vital for the ongoing financial support of the ASC. No new high performance funding was granted to volleyball from a Federal level and the results achieved in the next 12 months will be critical to the future sustainability of Australia s National Teams. Because of this lack of new funding and the perceived failures at International Competitions, the AVF undertook a complete review of their High Performance Programs. Volleyball WA wrote a detailed submission and attended a review meeting in Adelaide. VWA was the only State Association to write a detailed submission for the review. The ASC has applauded this review process and the findings of the review was released in As outlined in last year s report, the new Federal Government funding revolved around two key areas High Performance and Participation. As mentioned above the AVF were unsuccessful in their application to receive additional High Performance funding, however, even more concerning was the fact that as a sport we received no new participation funding. This is critical to the VWA as it would have been this funding which helped us achieve greater participation numbers. Trevor Williams OAM and Gavin Lewis have spent a considerable amount of time in writing various correspondences to the AVF and the WA DSR. The AVF lobbied the Federal Government and later in 2011, the ASC actually awarded $300,000 (from previously unallocated funding) to the AVF. Even though belated and not guaranteed to be on going funding, this additional funding is a sign the ASC is listening to the sport of volleyball and realizing some of the goals we are achieving. WA have lobbied for some of this funding to be spent directly at a State level. The AVF have accepted the proposal and in 2011 committed money to Executive Director s Report 8

Annual Report each State to fund a new staff position on the condition that the position is co funded and the major KPI will be to increase participation. This is an exciting venture in our opinion as it demonstrates top down funding, which is essential to achieve National outcomes in the sport. The Association once again celebrated a tremendous year for Volleyball with the Annual Awards Dinner. The dinner was held at the Rendezvous Hotel in Scarborough and was extremely well attended. In 2011, we broke all records for previous attendance at the dinner and we believe that this event will keep growing and maintain its title as the pinnacle celebration of Volleyball in WA. In the past year Volleyball WA maintained extremely good relationships with the Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR). The DSR supports Volleyball WA through a number of vehicles, including various working seminars and meetings, distribution of various resources and the provision of a financial grant. In 2011/2012, Volleyball WA maintained our level of funding from previous years. The relationship with the DSR is an essential part of Volleyball WA and without their assistance the association would not be able to function. I would like to thank the whole department for their support; financially, ethically, and resource wise. Mr Ron Alexander (Executive General) and Ms Robyn Kuhl (Consultant) have supported us greatly. In 2011, Robyn Kuhl became VWA s DSR Consultant. In the short period of time working with Robyn, I am extremely confident that Robyn will be a sensational asset to Volleyball and I am looking forward to working with her in the future. The Association looks forward to the continued support of the Department of Sport and Recreation WA also saw the continuation of the sponsorship relationship with Healthway. Healthway has been a major sponsor of the Associations for a number of years. The support we receive from Healthway has resulted in Volleyball WA being able to provide a number of services to the general public as well as our members, including but not limited to the Alcohol. Think Again Beach Volleyball State Series and various development programs. There are a number of other sponsors who have had long standing relationships with Volleyball WA and an equal number of sponsors who have new relationships with the Association. Volleyball WA entered into our third year sponsorship arrangement with radio station is one of Perth s most listened to radio stations and the exposure our sport gets on the radio is tremendous. As this report is being written, VWA is renegotiating the sponsorship arrangement with VWA would like to thank all our sponsors and partners for their continued support of volleyball in WA. Please see the back of this report for a complete list of all sponsors that have assisted Volleyball WA in The past year has been a very successful year for VWA at a State level. We have achieved at all levels of the sport from elite to participation. Thank you to the whole volleyball community in WA for your support. We look forward to your continued support. 11 Programs Spikezone Primary School Beach Volleyball Cup In 2011 Volleyball WA was proud to introduce the first ever Spikezone Primary School Beach Volleyball Cup, it was held on the 9th of March 2011 at the Royal Park Beach Volleyball courts. It was a very successful day with some very competitive Beach Volleyball being played and the enthusiasm of all the children created an incredible atmosphere for the tournament to be played. ther than just a referee, to deliver some coaching tips and feedback rather than just being an official. As most children were new to the sport this was very successful as it allowed the children to receive information on their progress rather than not knowing why a decision was made. The referees were a huge part of the success of the tournament and will hopefully continue to be involved in future tournaments. Western Australian Volleyball Association Inc. Annual Report The tournament saw almost 140 children competing out on the sand and the standard of beach volleyball and sportsmanship illustrated the fabulous work that teachers and students have done in preparing for the tournament. The games were all played in the right spirit and gave a number of children their first opportunity to be involved in an interschool volleyball tournament. All students had lots of fun and the tournament was a success. Referees for the day were 4 students from Rossmoyne Senior High School. Rossmoyne have been great supporters of Volleyball WA and having them involved once again in such a tournament was great. They were used in more of a facilitating role ra The biggest success to come out of the tournament however was the potential for growth; there were a lot of schools who were not able to compete in the Term 1 competition due to the fact that their term 1 curriculum had already been finalised. After seeing the success of the tournament a large number of schools have shown interest in being involved in future VWA tournaments. Thanks to all the schools for their participation and we look forward to their continued involvement. 12 Alcohol. Think Again High School Beach Volleyball Championships The 2011 Alcohol. Think Again WA Beach Volleyball School Championships was held on 10 th of March 2011 at City Beach in what was a very successful day all round with some very competitive Beach Volleyball being played. RESULTS Men Women Pairs Greenwood 12-3 Penrhos Blue A Grade Greenwood 10-1 Mercedes White B Grade Greenwood 9-5 Mercedes Red High School Indoor Competition The teachers and students work so hard to prepare for a tournament such as this and this was illustrated by the sportsmanship, standard of play and the overall feel of the day. Thank you to all the teams for showing up for their duty shifts, and to teachers for making sure that everything ran to schedule. With the junior and senior competitions combined it created one intense, fun day of beach volleyball with teams competing on the 10 th March on the sands of City Beach. The Town of Cambridge has been supporting VWA and this competition for many years now and City Beach is the preferred venue for all High School beach volleyball competitions. This event would not have been possible without the great help and support from our major sponsors, Healthway Alcohol. Think Again, Perth s Hit Music Station, Water Corporation and The Great Escape. Giveaways, competitions and promotions created a great atmosphere on the day which only added to the festivities of the day. Thanks to all the schools for their participation and we look forward to their continued involvement saw the growth of the Alcohol. Think Again High School Indoor Term 1 Competition, after a successful introduction in The tournament was moved back to April to avoid any cross over with the High School Beach Volleyball Championships. The event was run on the 9 & 10th April at Lords Sports Club in Subiaco. We received over 50 team nominations, with schools such as St Hilda s, Wesley, Trinity, Aquinas, Rossmoyne and Greenwood returning and the introduction of teams from St Mary s, Servite, Hale and Perth Modern. This tournament always has a great atmosphere as it is at the end of the private school volleyball season and the start of the indoor volleyball season for most public schools. This creates a situation where some schools are at the peak of their program and other schools can try new structures without the pressures of qualification for National Schools Cup. Volleyball WA would like to thank all teachers and students for continuing to grow this new exciting competition and we are looking forward to next year s event where we hope to have even more teams and schools involved. Programs Once again, we would like to thank The Town of Cambridge as well as City of Perth Surf Life Saving Club for their support and provision of the First Aid Facilities. 13 Western Australian Volleyball Association Inc. Annual Report Western Australian Schools Cup The Alcohol. Think Again WA Volleyball Schools Cup continues to grow with just under 170 school teams from all around the state playing during four days of competition to decide who was going to be crowned the Champion School for The constant increase in the number of schools participating in the tournament can be attributed to the growth of returning schools such as Servite College and the introduction of new schools looking to strengthen their volleyball program such as Great Southern Grammar School and Kalamunda Senior High School hopefully with their volleyball program flourishing and the participation in this event and the sport at school level will continue to grow. Expansion in the number of divisions allowed more athletes of all abilities to get involved, this made the tournament fun and enjoyable for everyone involved. The introduction of a rule allowing only one Open Honours division nomination per school created even more prestige and encouraged high level volleyball from these teams. This adaptation was accepted and will be used in this competition for future years. After trialing a three day format in 2010 to avoid issues many of the private schools have with getting out of classes during the school week, it was altered back to a four day competition in 2011 where we did a lot of work on the fixtures to accommodate all schools over the duration of the tournament. The Loftus Recreation Centre & Lords Sports Club were once again the venues used for the competition. Using two venues allowed for more games to be played and allowed for a more action packed tournament. In 2012 we will use Lords Sports Club for a longer period of time to allow for the expansion of the competition. Rossmoyne SHS once again set a bench mark with the number of teams nominated as well as providing upper school students as referees for the junior divisions and they did a very consistent and professional job. It was an unprecedented 20th year in a row that Rossmoyne Senior High School won the title of Champion School, the Program Coordinator changed in 2011 to Andrew Stephens and this achievement highlighted the strength of the volleyball program at the school to continue to grow after the retirement of previous coordinator Robyn Fittock. Country schools from Mandurah Baptist College and Albany Senior High School continue to return to the tournament each year and 2011 also saw the introduction of Great Southern Grammar School and Bunbury Catholic College. We hope to see even more country and rural teams involved in the 2012 WA Volleyball Schools Cup. 14 State Invitational RESULTS Volleyball WA hosts the Annual WA State Championships for indoor volleyball each Foundation day long weekend where the best country and city teams congregate to play for the state title. The 2011 event was held at Loftus Recreation Centre in Leederville on the 4 th & 5 th of June and was a great event for all involved. The Perth Volleyball League has a general bye which allows club, state and volleyball associations to compete against the country teams. As has been seen for many years, country associations such as Busselton, Albany, Mandurah and Collie Volleyball Associations entered a number of teams and 2011 saw the introduction of teams from Karratha. The Punjabi Cultural and Sports Club returned again this year increasing their participation to 2 teams in the B Men s division and once again performed well. We are hoping they will continue to grow and be a part of this competition for many years to come. WA State Junior teams use the WA State Championships as part of their preparation process leading up to the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships, which this year was held in Adelaide on the 10 th to 16 th of July The U21 Women won the Women s A grade by defeating the U19 Women. The U19 Men Black team would have competed against the U17 Men Black team in the final but instead the U17 team stepped aside to allow the final to be contested between the U19 Men Black team and a Country All Star team in the true spirit of the competition. Women s B Grade was won by the U17 Gold team also meaning that the WA state teams won a gold medal in every division they competed in. All state teams performed incredibly across the weekend and we wish them all the best for the tournament in July. School Sport WA entered their State U16 teams into the event for the first time and performed well above expectations with the U16 Men winning the Men s B Grade. Karratha completed the amazing feat of winning both B grade Country Champion titles in their first year, unfortunately this was not enough to hang on to the overall Country Champion Perpetual Shield which for the second year in a row was won by the Albany VA. VWA received nominations from 25 teams for the Summer League competition. Players who rested over the summer were keen to get back into action and the standard of competition was high across all divisions. Summer League continues to provide a great lead-in to the main winter season the Perth Volleyball League. This competition also allows people to play in a non club based team which means they get to play with their friends they do not usually play with. It also provides state coaches with an opportunity to see junior players in a game and tournament environment helping them with making selections for the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships held in Perth later this year. 15 Perth Volleyball League The 2011 Perth Volleyball League was a great season. 20 rounds with seven Clubs nominating over 85 teams into 11 divisions in both men and women. Annual Report The Northern Stars Volleyball Club entered a number of teams across all divisions and is no longer just a Junior Volleyball Club. We recorded growth across all divisions and it is crucial for the further development and sustainability of our sport to attract as many young players as possible. The growth in numbers shows the hard work Clubs are doing. Rossmoyne once again battled it out in the Men s Super League Grand Final. This year taking on the Northern Stars team winning in three straight sets. The Women s Super League Grand Final saw two teams that have not been in the Grand Finals in years Balcatta won against the Perth Coastal team in 4 exciting sets. Once again, we were extremely lucky to have Mrs Robyn Fittock taking on the role of the PVL coordinator this season and we would like to thank her for her efforts and exceptional work she has done. 16 WA State Senior Teams AVL & V-League The 2011 AVL season was a very successful season for the WA Pearls. The Womens season ran from May to July, the WA team travelled to Melbourne and Adelaide before hosting the Grand Final in Perth. Having won the AVL title in the previous two years put a lot of pressure on the girls to perform as well as in the previous years when they have not dropped a game. The team did lose a game however they came out in front of their home crowd in the AVL Grand Final and won against SA in a very spectacular game. WA Pearls made history by winning its 3rd title in a row of the Australian Volleyball League. Due to not enough entries, the Men s AVL did not go ahead in In place of the AVL, another competition (V League) was formed. This was a 7 team competition in a home and away format. The WA Hornets went away to Melbourne once and hosted two rounds in front of their home crowd. This was great for the team and for WA fans as we have not hosted a Men s Senior competition in Perth for many years. The WA Hornets came 5th just missing out on the Finals. 17 Volleyball WA Awards The Volleyball WA Annual Awards Dinner was held on Friday 25th November at Rendezvous City Hotel in Scarborough. There was a record attendance of 162 people. The room was colourfully decorated in balloons in the shape of volleyball players, and made a wonderful souvenir for a lucky few at the end of the night. Guests were given time to mingle amongst friends, with speeches kept short, but the traditional slide show was shown at the end of the night, and again enjoyed by all. 18 Australian Junior Volleyball Championships Adelaide 2011 The 2011 Australian Junior Volleyball Championships were held in Adelaide in South Australia. Held from the 10th to 16th of July, the event saw 52 teams from all states competing for the President s Trophy in the U17, U19 and U21 age groups. Volleyball WA entered 8 teams, including development teams in the women s and men s U17 divisions as well as in the U19 men s division. The Men s U21 team had to withdraw from the competition due to a number of injuries. Mr Damian Oldmeadow (Physiotherapy Solutions) offered a sponsorship to VWA in the form of his services during the competition. Damian paid for all travel expenses and was available throughout the whole competition to all WA athletes which was great. Across the board, this was a highly successful campaign with 2 Bronze and 1 Gold medals being won. Additionally, seven WA players have been selected in the All Star 7s. The WA contingent of referees again delivered a stellar performance, with excellent feedback received from other states and tournament organizers. 20 State Senior & Junior Beach Program The beach squads run by Volleyball WA in 2011 took on roughly the same format as Elite athletes received 6 months of training under the tutelage of Mandy Combes and Cameron Edwards in the ACE Squads. Trainings were primarily held at the Royal Park beach volleyball courts two times a week, and athletes also received the benefit of having the coaches available for the entire Alcohol. Think Again WA Beach Volleyball Tour to help with their game. There are also a lot of other coaches coaching Beach Volleyball athletes, including the Perth Beach Volleyball School. We would like to thank all the Beach Volleyball coaches in the sport. In the VWA s squads; development men and women were combined into one squad and trained by Ben McRobb and Michael Snart. This is the 1 st time that these two men have coached for VWA, and all the athletes commented on how they enjoyed learning from two elite athletes. Sessions started in mid- October and most were held at Royal Park beach volleyball courts as that guaranteed significantly more stable weather then sessions at the beach. Sessions were offered in the drop-in format, or a pay as you train format, and this offered more flexibility to those unable to commit for the entire 5 months. VWA also ran a junior beach program in 2011 to coincide with the AJBVC being held in Queensland. Trials were held in October, with selected athletes being required to play in the WA Junior Beach Championships to gain a ranking for the national event. 21 Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Championships Queensland 2011 Western Australian Volleyball Association Inc. Annual Report A large group of junior athletes involved in the VWA Beach Volleyball Squads put their training into practice this season, competing in the Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Championships at Surfer s Paradise on the Gold Coast, from the 16 th 18 th January. The tournament was interrupted by heavy rain on the 2 nd day, with most competitors wondering if they were really at a beach event. Some games were rescheduled to another beach 20min away to make up for lost time. This was the 1 st year VWA was responsible for the entire travelling delegation. We had 16 teams attending the tournament, just shy of last year s 20, with many teams taking advantage of state and national tour events being held on the weekends either side of juniors. All WA s Women s U17 teams met in Semi Finals and then the Grand Final, with Clare Wheeler and Alexis Elphick defeating Simona Koncarevic and Maleini Panikoula. Shelby Maher and Emma Lauriston claimed the bronze medal over Victoria. WA finished in 3 rd place overall on a count back, with 8 points, with the home state QLD claiming the Andy Burdin Shield. Beth Williamson and Michael Snart were selected as State captains. 22 Alcohol. Think Again WA Beach Volleyball Tour The 2011/2012 Beach Volleyball season has once again been a very busy one. VWA held 12 events this summer starting in November with the Royal Park Opens and finishing off with the WA State Open on the weekend of the 10th & 11th of March. This was the second year with the Alcohol. Think Again message. The message itself seems appropriate and we have had Council members commend us on promoting it. Unfortunately, the budget for the branded merchandise we were allocated was smaller comparing to the ones from previous years and as such, we had a limited number of give aways which makes it harder to promote the message and the competition. With the Bunbury Volleyball Association committee change and new President on board, Mr Jim Medew, we had a State Series round at Koombana Bay at the end of January. Perth players love going down south and playing in Bunbury as the beach there allows for a compact and visual tournament. As always, thanks to the great endeavours of Joan Strikwerda-Brown, Stuart Luff and all at the Busselton Volleyball Association, the Busselton beach tournament went ahead as scheduled, and once again proved to be a very successful event. Once again, the VWA Beach Volleyball Committee has given great support to VWA and the Tour. This group has been voluntarily meeting with VWA s Staff several times throughout the season constantly reviewing the Tour. One of the recommendations was to trial a few new formats for AAA Women division to provide more quality games to top ranked teams so they gain more experience for the National Beach Volleyball Series games. The final format will be decided on at the conclusion of this season. The WA State Open was held at Scarborough Beach over the weekend of the 10th and 11th of March and was a great success for VWA. The weekend proved to be challenging for some with almost 40 degree temperatures. West Australians had a chance to see some of the best WA players. Pauline Manser paired up with Jenny Day and took the Grand Final against Melissa Johnson and Taleah Atthowe. In the Men s AAA Grand Final we saw some great volleyball in 3 very exciting and close sets where Brett Lewington and Rhodri Simmonds claimed the title against Michael Snart and Cole Durant. 24 Social Competitions The WA Volleyball Social Volleyball program offered structured Indoor and Beach Volleyball competitions in These leagues are based on independent teams (non-club), with VWA supplying coordinators and referees. The Social Indoor Volleyball Leagues were located at two venues across the metropolitan area. Indoor venues Forrestfield Warwick Evening Tuesday Tuesday Forrestfield and Warwick ran at full team capacity, in both social competitions there are regular teams who have been coming back season after season for many years. In general, we see one or two teams every season not returning but we have new teams entering. ularity of the 2 a-side competition continued to increase, with a resultant drop in the number of teams nominating for the 4-a-side competitions. The Summer season is the most popular season when it comes to the 4-a-side competitions. Winter season 2011 has been more popular then previous winter seasons. We had a record of 16 teams for 4 a-side and 21 teams for 2 a-side, these are good numbers for the cold period. We have had a better response from players with the combination of 2 a-side and 4 a-side teams playing on the same night in the winter season. Most of the teams playing in winter are the regular teams all year round. Programs In 2011, we introduced (in conjunction with ECU Chequers VC) the 1st Annual Country of Origin social volleyball tournament. It was played as a one day competition at Lords Sports Club. In total, we had 16 teams representing their own country by wearing their national colour and carrying their country flag. Following the players feedback, the event was very successful and will be one to remember. The Social Beach Volleyball Competitions were based at Volleyball WA s Royal Park Beach Volleyball courts. Summer and Spring seasons ran at maximum capacity of teams for 2 a side social competition on Monday evenings. Many teams played only for the social aspect and other teams joined the 2 a-side social competition as part of extra training for the State Series season. In the Spring season, the pop- 24

25 Development Officer s Report Western Australian Volleyball Association Inc. Annual Report Coaching The Volleyball WA run Level 1 Coaching Courses saw twelve (12) coaches receiving National Accreditation in Volleyball WA is still exploring the options of offering a Level 2 Volleyball Coaching course to our members in the near future to further increase the coaching expertise of State Coaches as well as continue to develop coaches who have completed their Level 1 Coaching Accreditations. The only reason Volleyball WA are yet to run a level two course is the associated costs with getting a presenter but with expressions of interest for such a course very high, hopefully with the help of the Australian Volleyball Federation a Level 2 course will be in place in Congratulations must go to the joint winners of the Volleyball WA Coach of the year, Pauline Manser & Martin Suan as well as the Rookie Coach of the Year for 2011, Mark McDowell. Each coach has put in countless hours of hard work into coaching many teams in different environments on a volunteer basis for most programs and these awards are recognition of their dedication and passion for the sport. In 2011, Pauline had yet another incredible year coaching the WA Pearls Senior State Women s team to an unprecedented third consecutive Australian Volleyball League title and the Australian National Women s Team on 4 tours with great success. Marty had an amazing year of coaching, leading 3 teams to medals at the Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Championships with Gold medals in the U17 & U19 Male divisions and a Silver in U23 Men. On top of state coaching Marty also is the head coach of the Perth Beach Volleyball School who have strong junior and senior participation on State and National Beach Volleyball Tours. Mark McDowell put in a spectacular performance in his first year as a state coach with the U17 Men Black team claiming the bronze medal at the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships. Clinics A number of different coaches ran clinics for Volleyball WA in 2011 due to an increase of interest from both primary and high schools for volleyball programs. Clinics were once again delivered by Max Wason (Development Officer) and Stephen Page, with Nick McKenzie also taking a number of sessions. The increase in Primary School clinics as a way to build towards tournaments such as the Spikezone Primary School Beach Volleyball Cup and Spikezone Primary School Volleyball Championships has increased awareness of the sport for many schools and hopefully will lead to the growth of all programs in High School Volleyball Programs & Clinics in 2010 were conducted by all coaches, with schools developing volleyball programs in conjunction with their TEE Physical Education Studies programs. Feedback from schools has indicated that they were run in a very professional manner and the students developed above expectations over the course of the programs, this has also lead to some TEE classes being involved in other Volleyball WA tournament. Once again Volleyball WA hosted clinics as a curtain raiser for the WA District High School Country Week which allowed students from all around WA the opportunity to receive high level coaching at the beginning of the week long tournament that they otherwise do not receive. Refereeing The Western Australian Referees Committee in 2011 as always has done a great job with the development and education of WA s officials. A large pool of referees have worked hard through WA s School & Club Volleyball competitions to improve their standard of refereeing, so they can progress further in this field. The goal of many is to be selected as part of the WA Referee Contingent for the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships (AJVC). The Volleyball WA Referee Coaching program continued to flourish in 2011 with group of officials in the Perth Volleyball League educating and developing young referees with many progressing and receiving qualification upgrades. This mentoring program assists new referees to develop their confidence, and provides weekly opportunities for Referee assessments and upgrades. 25

26 Congratulations to all referees selected to attend the 2011 AJVC in Adelaide. The success of the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships is due in part to all the hard work and professionalism of the officials and they must be commended for the standard of officiating seen throughout the tournament. Congratulations to Tal Berman, Sarah Cole Bowen & Frances McKenna who were all upgraded to a National A qualification. VWA would like to congratulate all referees and wish them all the best in their future endeavours was a great year for Referee Courses with 12 courses being conducted in Perth and regional centres by the VWA Referee Commission (Ms Danielle Francis, Mr Derek Scales, Mr Brendan Buckley and Mr Stephen Page), with almost 200 newly appointed District Referees (nearly double that of 2010). The majority of the VWA referee course participants are from high schools which are required to receive their qualifications for the Australian Volleyball Schools Championships which increases the level of officiating at all High School competitions as well as at club level. Awards 2011 Junior Referee of the Year Renae Harvey 2011 Rookie Referee of the Year Tal Berman 2011 Referee of the Year Brendan Buckley Australian Volleyball Schools Cup The Australian Volleyball Schools Cup (AVSC) is held each year in Melbourne during early December with schools from all over Australia competing to be crowned the best volleyball school in the country and is considered to be the largest single-sport school event in the nation. The 2011 event was held between the 4th and 9th of December and broke numerous participation records in the process. The 2011 event was the largest AVSC since the event began in 1984 with 465 teams from 139 schools across Australia, New Zealand and Japan competing over the week long competition. The AVSC is a great opportunity for players, coaches and referees to develop their skills and upgrade qualifications, but most of all is a great volleyball experience. Danni Francis continued in her role as Chief Referee overseeing the officials involved in the tournament. Mr. Derek Scales was a referee supervisor and a number of WA volunteers attended the event: Max Wason, Laura Porter, Zorana Bozic and Jovana Bozic. The Challenge was set by Volleyball WA to all WA schools to go to this tournament and experience the incomparable atmosphere and the opportunity to play against the best teams in the country. This challenge was accepted with 55 school teams from WA representing Rossmoyne SHS, Aquinas College, Greenwood SHS, Wesley College, Santa Maria College, and Trinity College. There were also a number of WA schools attending the tournament which did not attend in 2010 or were attending their first AVSC such as Penrhos, St Marys, Hale, Servite, Mercedes, IONA, Mandurah & Mount Lawley. Spikezone The Spikezone Volleyball and the Spikezone Beach Volleyball programs flourished in 2011 with growth seen across all courses. There was an average of thirty (32) kids per course between the ages of 8 and 13 learning how to play volleyball in a fun game related program. These sessions were run by Development Officer Max Wason on Monday afternoons after school at Lords Sports Club and Royal Park Beach Volleyball courts and will hopefully continue to grow in Max Wason (VWA Development Officer) with a group of students from Singapore Development Officer s Report

27 Country/Regional Areas Country visits are important to Volleyball WA to increase the awareness of the sport as well as develop the ability and qualifications of people outside the metropolitan area. The Karratha Volleyball Association was very proactive in 2011 and we saw them coming to Perth strong to play against metro and other regional teams in the 2011 WA State Championships. Western Australian Volleyball Association Inc. Annual Report The Bunbury Volleyball Assosciation saw a change of personnel and welcomed Mr Jim Medew to the Presidents position. Jim has been away from volleyball for a while but it is great to see him back so passionate about developing our sport. Thanks to Jim, VWA was able to secure a round of the Alcohol. Think Again WA Beach Volleyball Tour played in Bunbury. VWA will continue to work with the regional area clubs and associations to support the tremendous work that volunteers have already put in to ensure the continued development of volleyball programs in these areas. Volleyball WA strives to provide all West Australians with opportunities to play, officiate and coach the sport of Volleyball at all levels of the game.
