4 For the first time in two years, the Lewis men s volleyball team is eligible for postseason play, and head coach Dan Friend plans to take the Flyers there. Friend, who got his first taste of NCAA postseason play after leading the Flyers women s team to an unexpected conference championship and subsequent NCAA berth last fall, has been waiting for the 2007 season since he took the men s job two seasons ago. To say I m excited for postseason play would probably be an understatement, said Friend. The key is just getting there. Once we re there, anything can happen. Getting there is a real possibility for Lewis. While still a young team, the Flyers possess experience and all-conference talent. Last year s squad went but took away more positives than negatives from the season Season Outlook Flyers Eyeing Return to Postseason Drew Pickering, an All-MIVA second-team selection, was first among freshmen fourth overall in the conference with 4.90 points per game last season. Dan Friend is in his third season as head coach of the Flyers. He entered the season 14 wins shy of 200 for his career. The 2006 Flyers earned five wins in their last 12 matches, and knocked off IPFW, which advanced to the NCAA semifinals. Two Flyers earned All-MIVA recognition, and 11 landed on the All- MIVA Academic team. We started all freshmen last year, said Friend. Most freshmen don t get that kind of playing time so early in their career. We gained tremendous experience. Walking into this season, we re not going to be intimidated by anyone. These guys believe in themselves. They have that winning attitude. The Flyers 2007 roster consists of two seniors, one junior, 11 sophomores and four freshmen. Lewis three all-conference players figure to see many starts, but the entire starting lineup is by no means set in stone. Possessing talent and depth at each position, Friend figures to have a number of players competing for starts. Outside Hitters Jared Dayton and Drew Pickering are two of Lewis all-conference players, and they will be looked to for the bulk of the team s offensive production in Dayton, a senior with junior playing eligibility after taking a redshirt last season, earned All-MIVA second-team honors and totaled 358 kills in He will serve as one of the Flyers two team captains this season. We re looking for great things from 2 Jared, said Friend. He s a smart player with final four experience from his freshmen year. His leadership is going to be a great asset to this team. Pickering, an All- MIVA second-team selection in 2006, emerged as a true star last season. He led the Flyers with 395 kills and all freshmen in the conference with 4.29 kills per game. Drew is a fantastic and exciting player to watch, said Friend. He has a great work ethic. Watch for him to take it to another level this season. He s definitely an All- America type of player. Adding depth behind Dayton and Pickering are sophomores Mykolai Zerebeckyj and Zak Krumlinde and freshmen Nathan Klaas and Jonathan Vazquez. Zerebeckyj registered 183 kills and was third on the team with 110 digs last season. Mykolai has really improved physically, said Friend. He jumps and touches higher, and he s developed into a better defensive player. Krumlinde saw action in 21 games last season. Zak is the kind of guy I can plug into just about any position on the floor and not miss a beat, said Friend. He gives us good depth in that respect. Klaas comes to Lewis with impressive high school credentials, registering a team-best 233 kills his senior season. Nathan is a local standout, said Friend. He swings at a high ball. He got some playing time in Canada in the fall and I expect he ll make a solid impact this season. Sophomore Tom Garvey and freshman Duri Balat will take redshirts this season. Middle Blockers The Flyers third all-conference player, sophomore Alex Vigansky, resides in the middle. Vigansky, an imposing middle at 6-foot-9, made the All-MIVA second

5 Alex Vigansky (right) averaged 1.10 blocks per game last season, finishing ninth overall and second among freshmen in the conference. He was selected to the All-MIVA second team. team last season. He totaled 194 kills and led the Flyers with 99 blocks. Vigansky ranked second among freshmen in the conference with his.348 hitting percentage and 1.10 blocks-per-game average. Alex provides a big presence in the middle, said Friend. He worked extremely hard in the offseason and has come back bigger and stronger. Sophomore Billy Sahagian will serve as the Flyers other captain this season. In 25 matches last season he notched 105 kills and averaged 0.88 blocks per game, making it tough for Friend to keep him off the floor. Billy has a great energetic presence, said Friend. He hits a heavy ball and plays at another level of intensity. Additional support in the middle will come from junior David Kyner and sophomore Craig Boller. David is super energetic, said Friend. He plays with a lot of heart and has the ability to fill another leadership role on this team. Boller produced quality numbers for the Flyers last season, totaling 142 kills and 42 blocks. Now completely healthy, he ll be looked upon for even more contributions this season. Craig s shoulder is healthy, said Friend. He is a phenomenal blocker. He gets his hands in the right spots. He ll certainly push for some starts in the middle this season Season Outlook Opposites Senior Sean Phillips is another player the Flyers will lean on for leadership in Like Dayton, Phillips was around for the 2004 run to the national semifinals. Sean s experience and leadership will no doubt help this team, said Friend. He s a great team guy who has made some valuable contributions to the team s success. Sophomore David Kelnhofer proved a potent offensive weapon for the Flyers last season. He finished second to Pickering in total kills (236) and averaged 0.67 blocks per game. David is an athletic guy who has continually gotten better, said Friend. I m looking for him to step up and have a big impact this season. Liberos Sophomore Nick Perakes stepped up into the starting role last season, finishing with a team-best 215 digs. His 2.56 digs-per-game average was third overall and first among freshmen in the MIVA. Nick worked extremely hard to earn the starting spot last season, said Friend. He s a great passer and does a good job of controlling the defensive flow. Behind Perakes is freshman Jake Conrad. A former Pioneer Press Player of the Year runner-up, Conrad will push for time this season. Once Jake can become adjusted to the college game, he should see some good time, said Friend. Setters The starting setter position appears to be an open competition between sophomores Jordan Vidovic and David Taylor. Vidovic handled the bulk of the load last season, finishing with 870 assists. Jordan has great hands, said Friend. He runs a great tempo offense and has good control of the offense. Taylor, a late addition to the roster last year, earned a handful of starts toward the end of the season. He finished with 319 assists, hitting a season high of 38 at Mercyhurst. David is a great physical setter and strong net player, said Friend. He s a great competitor and plays with a lot of intensity. Schedule Regular-season action begins January 11 when the Flyers head east for matches against Springfield College and Rutgers- Newark. Lewis opens its home portion of the schedule with a Wednesday night 3 match against St. Ambrose on January 17. Conference play kicks off two nights later as the Flyers host Mercyhurst on January 19. From there the Flyers are on the road for five conference matches before returning home to host Loyola Chicago on February 6. Another highlight of the 2007 schedule is a two-match swing in Hawaii on March Lewis longest homestand comes at the end of the regular season when the Flyers host five consecutive matches and push for a postseason berth. The homestand begins with a match against Ohio State on March 30 and concludes April 13 against 2006 national runner-up Penn State. Our schedule presents us with a number of tests, said Friend. We have some winnable conference matches early and good balance throughout the schedule. We have some great competition at home at the end of the season which will serve as an ideal tune-up heading into the conference tournament. We have a young, talented team which has physically gotten better, said Friend. We believe we can win, and we re going to surprise some people. A winning attitude fosters a winning environment, and that is what brings championships. Billy Sahagian (left) and Craig Boller combined for 101 blocks last season. Sahagian led the Flyers with seven solo blocks.

6 Head Coach Dan Friend Dan Friend is in his third season at the helm of the Lewis University men s volleyball program. In his 10th season as a head coach, Friend began the 2007 season with a overall record. Last season, Friend guided the Flyer men to a mark, upping his win-loss total to with Lewis. Presiding over a team of all freshmen starters in 2006, Friend led the young squad to several successes. The Flyers won five of their last 12 and went 3-3 during their final six home matches. Lewis also claimed a 3-1 win over eventual MIVA champion and NCAA tournament qualifier IPFW. Friend had two players named to the all-conference team, and he saw 11 players land on the conference s all-academic list. In his first season with the Lewis men, Friend guided a veteran club with four allconference players to a overall record and a 10-6 mark in the MIVA. Friend s first taste of NCAA postseason play came last fall when he took over as interim head coach of the Lewis women s team and led the Flyers to their first conference championship in 14 years. The women s team went 17-3 under Friend, finishing with a 25-6 overall record and a trip to the NCAA tournament. Before arriving at Lewis, Friend served as the men s and women s volleyball head coach at Newman University. Friend started the men s volleyball program at Newman in 2002 and led the team to the NAIA national championship match in its third year. He coached the Jets to a 20-win season in 2003 and was named NAIA National Coach of the Year after leading the 2004 squad to a mark and national runner-up finish. As Newman s women s head volleyball coach, Friend guided the program to 22 or more wins in each of his three seasons at the helm. He coached 15 all-conference, eight all-region and two All-America players. In 2003, the Jets posted a 32-8 overall record and 14-2 league mark. Friend s combined record in the two positions, was (.637), including a (.623) record with the men s team. Before coaching at Newman, Friend spent three seasons as an assistant women s volleyball coach at Washburn University. Prior to that, Friend was a student assistant at Washburn for four years. Friend also coached and played for a college-age men s team called USA Athletes on three different summer tours. That team took first at the 2004 Aruba Invitational and the 2002 Down Under Games (Australia). In 2003 the team finished third in the DKV Invitational (Netherlands). Friend is a native of Topeka, Kan., and a graduate of Washburn University. He earned a bachelor s degree in athletic training and exercise physiology at Washburn before completing a master s degree in sports administration at the University of Kansas. Friend is a certified athletic trainer who has worked in a rehabilitation clinic and at the University of Kansas. Friend is a member of the AVCA and the United States Volleyball Association. He also competes in the summer months on the EVP and AVP. Friend is just the second head coach in the 14-year history of the Lewis program, which has become a national power. The Flyers have made three NCAA Championship appearances, making trips to the NCAA semifinals in 1996, 1998 and The Friend File Women s Record Year School Record 2001 Newman (.579) 2002 Newman (.564) 2003 Newman 32-8 (.800) 2006 Lewis 17-3 (.850) Women s Total (.679) Men s Record Year School Record 2002 Newman (.500) 2003 Newman (.625) 2004 Newman (.725) 2005 Lewis (.548) 2006 Lewis (.357) Men s Total (.564) Overall Record (.616) MIVA Record Year School Record 2005 Lewis 10-6 (.625) 2006 Lewis 3-9 (.250) MIVA Total (.464)

7 Assistant Coaching Staff Assistant Coach Cody Chamberlain Cody Chamberlain is in his third season as an assistant coach at Lewis University. In addition, he was chosen as the team s Most Valuable Player three times and was an All-MIVA Academic team selection. Schools constituting the membership were: Ball State Teachers College, Detroit Institute of Technology, Earlham College, George Williams College, Michigan State University, Ohio State University and Wittenberg College. The purpose of the Association as stated in its constitution was to promote volleyball in colleges and regulate by wise and prudent measures the college competition in the area. The MIVA was the first college group to organize collegiate volleyball competition. More than 30 institutions have been involved since the founding of the Association.
