4 Coaches always stress the importance of taking things one day at a time. But you will have to forgive head coach Dan Friend if he doesn t take a step back and identify the 2009 season as the final pages in the next chapter of the Lewis men s volleyball program. As unanimous favorites in the preseason coaches poll to win the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, the expectations are high for Friend s Flyers. His original six member recruiting class of Drew Pickering, Billy Sahagian, Alex Vigansky, Nick Perakes, David Kelnhofer and Jordan Vidovic are seniors. The senior group is a big part of our rebuilding process the last four years, Friend said. They ve worked extremely hard to re-establish this program as a top 15 club as well as an annual contender in the MIVA. Last season the seniors helped the Flyers win a MIVA Tournament match and finish in the AVCA Top 15 for the first time since This year they start the season tied for 10th in the preseason poll. They aren t satisfied any more than I am, Friend said. In the fall season I think we ve proven we want to get back to the final four. Granted, staying healthy and peaking at the right time is important, but I believe we have the pieces of that puzzle, and it s a matter of getting them on the floor at the right time. The question, then, is what are Friend s goals for the 2009 Flyers? We won t put things out there in writing, Friend said. But hosting the MIVA Tournament, getting to the MIVA final and making the national tournament are all steps that need to be taken if we think we can win a national championship. Leading the way will be Sahagian. The middle hitter struggled with a knee injury last season but rallied to make his second straight All-MIVA second team selection. He finished 2008 with 229 kills (2.41) and 110 blocks (1.16). As a cocaptain, his importance to the club goes beyond his numbers in the box score. Billy is a good role model for the team. He works hard and plays with a high level of energy, Friend said. I can t say enough good things about him. Sahagian will team up with middle blocker Vigansky to control the net for the Flyers. Last season Vigansky earned All-MIVA honors, ranking second in the conference in blocks per set (1.29) and second on the team in hitting percentage (.396). Vigansky has shown the ability to have big matches both offensively and defensively. Last season against Ball State Vigansky recorded 13 kills and 12 blocks Season Outlook Flyers Start the 2009 Season as MIVA Favorites Senior Billy Sahagian will go for his third straight All-MIVA selection in He has proven he can dominate at the net, Friend said. Look for him to push the envelope this year and play like an all-conference first team player. Outside hitter Pickering is the go-to guy with the graduation of Jared Dayton. Pickering is a two-time all-conference performer and took home a MIVA Player of the Week award last year. He s also one of the best servers in Lewis history. He is 42 aces short of breaking the career record. He would need another season like his sophomore year when he set a rally scoring season record with 54. Drew worked extremely hard in the off-season, Friend said. His goal is to play the entire season at the level he played during the final month of last year. Perakes holds down the libero position for the fourth straight season. Perakes is on pace to set the all-time career digs mark. Entering the year with 705 he is 188 short of Victor Rivera s ( ) total of 893. Perakes was selected to the preseason MIVA All-Conference team by a vote of opposing coaches. Nick runs the team, Friend said. He s a great leader and serve/receives well. He s in the best shape of his life and is poised to have a great year. Rounding out the senior class are outside hitter Kelnhofer and setter Vidovic. Both have moved on to reserve roles but possess significant experience and make the Flyers one of the deepest teams in the MIVA. Kelnhofer has more than 600 kills in his career, including notching 200 last year. David has had a great attitude towards accepting his role change, Friend said. He s one the most athletically gifted guys on the team and we ve been throwing him at middle a bit during practice. He s the type of player who can come in at anytime and make an impact. Vidovic enters the season just 73 assists short 2,000. He brings three years of running the offense to the position and, along with redshirt junior Andy Frontz, provides impressive depth at the setter spot. Jordan has a great mind for the game, Friend said. His experience is great to have and I m not worried when he s on the court. Sophomore Brian Muesenfechter and junior Mike Iandolo have stepped into the opposite and setter positions, respectively. Muesenfechter will begin the season as the starter at opposite after earning the top spot midway through Last year he totaled 145 kills, including 22 at Loyola and 15 against Ball State in the MIVA Semifinals. Muesenfechter might have the best volleyball IQ on the team, Friend said. He sees opportunities not everyone sees and makes things happens. His experience last season puts him in a great position. Iandolo wasted no time making his mark at Lewis. He earned all-conference honors after averaging assists per set and ranking fourth in the nation in aces per set (0.52) last season. Mike is more comfortable with the guys and just being at Lewis this year, Friend said. I think his experience combined with his strong work ethic will only improve his performance. The Flyers expect contributions from beyond the starters. Among the reserves who will see important time on the floor is junior middle blocker Craig Boller. He redshirted last season due to a shoulder injury but is ready to go. During his first two years he played in 55 matches with 29 starts, recording 246 kills and 99 blocks. Despite coming off the injury, I think Craig is in his best shape ever, Friend said. He is one of our best blockers and is excited about the opportunity to get significant reps. Like Boller, junior outside hitter Nathan Klaas is another Flyer looking to take his game to the next level this year. The graduation of Jared Dayton opens up a spot for Klaas to make his mark at Lewis. Klaas is no stranger to the court, playing in 43 matches over his first two seasons. He has averaged just over two and a half kills per set during his time at Lewis.

5 2009 Season Outlook We ve groomed Nathan to take over that outside spot, and just in the preseason he has proved he is ready, Friend said. He is stronger and has improved his arm swing, but he s also a better passer and better defensively. That versatility along with his consistent energy will enable him to make an impact. With so many seniors, grooming players for specific spots down the line is no stranger to Friend. Adding depth this season and possibly competing for the libero spot next year are newcomers Steve Soucy and Rikki Garma. Soucy is returning after taking last year off, but a preseason injury will keep him out. It s a tough break for Steve, Friend said. But I love the energy he brings and the whole team is glad to have him back. Garma is a transfer from El Camino College where he became the school s career digs leader. Rikki has great foot speed and is aggressive on defense, Friend said. I look for him to make an impact down the road. Sophomore Brian Schmidt and redshirt freshman Gustavo Cintron will provide depth at the outside and opposite hitter spots. It s great to have one guy like Brian who can provide depth at two positions, Friend said. His overall skill has improved across the board. He brings great length and size to the court. Gustavo used his redshirt year to work and improve his skills. Friend continued. His fantastic foot speed gives him the opportunity to be a great defensive player for us. Middle blocker Aaron Flick redshirted last season but made an impact on the rest of the team to be named a co-captain without ever playing a match as a Flyer. He has a great amount of respect from his teammates, Friend said. Being voted a captain tells you something about his leadership abilities. He has a great work ethic and will help us add depth at middle blocker. Sophomore middle blocker Matt Gallik will redshirt this year. Matt does a wonderful job of pushing guys in practice, Friend said. Look for great things from him in years to come. The Flyers entire freshman class will join Gallik in redshirting and preparing for the 2010 season. The work ethic of the freshmen has been fantastic, Friend said. As a group they ve come in and done things the right way. Their time will come in future seasons and they are already working for those moments. But for the rest of the Flyers roster, their time is now. The 2009 schedule features match-ups with seven of the AVCA preseason top 15 teams. Highlighting the slate is a home contest with UCLA on Feb. 13. Contests at defending national champion Penn State, 2007 national champion BYU and Stanford make for challenging campaign. The schedule will allow us to see how we measure up across the nation. Friend said. It s going to be tough no matter where you are at, but I m excited about playing East Coast schools like George Mason and St. Francis. Friend knows plenty has already been accomplished but there is still work left to do. I think we ve re-established ourselves, and opposing coaches know they have to scout well and be at their best to beat us, Friend said. Respect from the opposition is an important quality to have, but now it is time to do more, and I think the squad we have can do that. 6 Head Coach Dan Friend Dan Friend is in his fifth season at the helm of the Lewis University men s volleyball program. In his 12th season as a head coach, Friend began the season with a overall record and record with the Lewis men. The Flyers finished the 2008 season ranked No. 14 in the nation. Friend earned his first 20 win season and postseason victory as Lewis head coach. Four Flyers were named to the All-MIVA team and 10 earned all-academic honors. In 2007, Friend led the Flyers to a overall record. Lewis reached the postseason for the first time under Friend, falling to Ball State in the opening round of the conference tournament. Three Flyers earned All-MIVA recognition following the season and nine made the all-academic list. In 2006, Friend guided the Flyer men to a mark, presiding over a team of all freshmen starters. That team took first at the 2007 Scottish Opoen, 2004 Aruba Invitational and the 2002 Down Under Games (Australia). In 2003 the team finished third in the DKV Invitational (Netherlands). Friend is a native of Topeka, Kan., and a graduate of Washburn University. He earned a bachelor s degree in athletic training and exercise physiology at Washburn before completing a master s degree in sports administration at the University of Kansas. Friend was a certified athletic trainer who has worked in a rehabilitation clinic and at the University of Kansas. Friend is a member of the AVCA and the United States Volleyball Association. He also competes in the summer months on the EVP and AVP. Friend is just the second head coach in the 16- year history of the Lewis program, which has become a national power. Schools constituting the membership were: Ball State Teachers College, Detroit Institute of Technology, Earlham College, George Williams College, Michigan State University, Ohio State University and Wittenberg College. The purpose of the Association as stated in its constitution was to promote volleyball in colleges and regulate by wise and prudent measures the college competition in the area. The MIVA was the first college group to organize collegiate volleyball competition. More than 30 institutions have been involved since the founding of the Association.
